  1. Believe me there is.

I had the same problem. I tried to uninstall but not all components were removed.

Now I cannot do anything. Can't remove the rest. Can't reinstall.

I have used AVG as long as I can remember and never had problems until now.

I am thinking of doing a clean install of Windows 10 , but apart from AVG I don't have any other problems.

Humm... never had anything like this, maybe running Windows 10 plays a role here.

Have you tried AVG's own remover? http://www.avg.com/ww-en/utilities

  2. Nothing complicated in uninstalling all AVG parts and reinstalling the free version, really.

Just don't forget to restart computer between the two phases.

And if you're unhappy with his (I can understand you'd be) just install another free a/v, there are many: Avast, Avira...

  3. Sorry about the confusion, I wrote fix meaning "correction" indeed and later realized that is was misleading.

I'm quite familiar with all these concepts, thanks (having possessed several Mediatek-based smartphones)

Some lousy firmwares also don't include a working geolocalisation either. The kind that provides imprecise and static positioning using wifi or GSM antennas, although I've seen this only on tablets so far. On these devices either Google Maps can't get a position at all, or it shows you somewhere in the southern Atlantic (0/0 degrees coordinates).

Oh, by the way, on one of my former Mediatek-based no-name smartphones sold here by a local rebrander (Wiko), tightening the screens of the phone's frame at the back did wonders. A typical case of GPS antenna to mainboard loose connector.

Android forums are full of topics from people desperately trying to find a software or hardware solution for these lousy GPS. Some people are very creative: scratching paint covering the GPS antenna, attaching a folded aluminium film to it, soldering a wire... the most technically advanced people cut out a GPS antenna of the right dimensions (based on wavelength etc.) in a piece of copper foil and solder a connector to the mainboard somehow. I've read very few proven success stories, though.

  4. Having used the the i-Mobile IQ II for seven weeks now I agree that it's GPS function is close to useless.

Unfortunately that's a common trait of many cheap Mediatek-based devices.

The Mediatek chip isn't the brightest kid on the block when it comes to GPS, and lousy build quality, poor GPS antenna and/or poor connection to said antenna on the motherboard does the rest.

    No software "fix" does miracles.

Sometimes, pushing on the right spot (usually one of the top corners) at the back of the phone does wonders because this, at least, helps the poor connection.

  5. Talking about banks and different rules... I usually come to Thailand with a load of Euros to deposit to my TFB account (former expat here, stayed in Thailand quite a few years, I still have my account with conditions only people with a work permit can get).

Every TFB branch I've tried enforces more or less the same complete nonsense:

    - only perfectly pristine banknotes are accepted, many notes get rejected with defects I sometimes can't even see without my glasses on: microscopic stains or tears, some hand-written mark...

    - they don't accept more than 3K€ in one operation, so I have to do it more than once

    - they insist on photocopying every note and make me sign the copies (this by itself takes almost one hour!)

AFAIK only TFB does this. Usually, right after I'm done with them, I take all the rejected notes to the nearest SCB, TMB branch and exchange them for Thai cash in minutes: quick glance at my passport, a form to sign and I'm done. I then deposit the cash back to my TFB account (and keep some).

My account at TFB is 15+ years old, credit almost never gets below 50K. It's been up to 6 figures+ when I was working in Thailand. You'd think this would make me a good customer they want to keep? nah... I once complained a bit more than usual in the "home" branch for my account because they just had rejected almost 1/4 of my Euro notes, telling them (with a yim siam on of course... been in Thailand long enough, I know the rules) that no other bank does this and suggesting that I would move my account elsewhere. "Well yes, why don't you do so if it's more convenient to you?" is the reply I've received, more or less loosely translated. Go figure.

  6. I really thought I was going to see Zlatan Ibrahimovic in this vidéo tongue.png

Just anyone in France would immediately think of him when mentioning a Swede who's an immigrant from the Balkans!

As for the French elections, well, the NF might well win in the eastern region. The socialist head of list has refused to give up (and therefore got the party's investiture withdrawn from him) so the three main lists are still there for the second round. Adding to the fact that this region has a long history of "hard" right-wing voters, I'm afraid that the FN stands a real chance there.

Maybe we need this so that people realize the FN has no magic wand, that they won't do better than the others to solve the country's main problems such as unemployment and will certainly bring a lot of new trouble.

EDIT : @Thorgal : not quite right. If we're talking about parties really having gained control over something bigger than a small to medium-small city in the country's, we do have a dual party landscape. Things might actually change on sunday.

  7. I certainly have no problem packing 30kg of stuff into my suitcase to take advantage of the allowance on EK (my usual carrier).

My main problems are to not going too much over this and carrying the bloody thing in public transports to the airport here in France.

Not an issue at Suwa because I rent a car.

My son & wife flew EK (Emirates) this summer, and were allowed two bags hold-luggage each and 30kgs per person, so no need to cram it all into just one.

Indeed, but I only have two hands to carry my stuff on the streets and in public transportation corridors:

    - one for the big suitcase on wheels

    - one for the cabin baggage on wheels + computer bag attached to its extendable handle

  8. Much wealthier than any other country in this list (or at least wealth much better distributed) seems like a good reason to me: much better access to preventive healthcare and treatment. Japan's healthcare system is really good.

I think that they might have healthier food as well, but that's just a wild guess.

  9. Eva Air only require to see your credit card at checkin for certain countries. For example Thailand to Uk not required.

I always wonder why airlines dont use paypal as this option is so easy. I have not found any airline using paypal.

I have paid my upcoming trip with Paypal (Emirates flight).

  10. Unfortunately, this is becoming more and more common in cheap chinese brand phones (I prefer using chinese brand more than "from China" because basically all smartphones come from China, even those from the most expensive brands).

I've bought an Elephone lately and it did come with adware at least. Didn't need any detection program to find out, I had random shortcuts to game or "hot videos" sites appearing on the launcher's screen. Fortunately that wasn't a system app, just something that got preinstalled so getting rid of it was pretty straightforward.

it's now well known and extensively demonstrated that many of the cheapest no-name tablets come with spyware deeply embedded in the system, much more difficult to get rid of because it resides in the system UI and framework APKs. The www.techknow.me forum has an extensive (quite technical) section about this.

As advised above, better sticking to first or second tier brands if you want to avoid this or you're not knowledgeable enough to clean up by yourself. The Thai importer can't help obviously, as the phone come preinstalled and the factory image they have obviously is infected as well.

  11. Do what Thais do, just let it go ......

And thats the reason service is so bad. They dont/are afraid to complain. This face thing causes thais to put up with all kinds of problems instead of complaining.

    Constructive criticism is unheard of.

Err, no. Not all of them.

I once participated in an academic workshop in a luxury hotel near Cha Am. We were only a couple of westerners invited, all others mostly Thais and a few other Asians. The dinner was supposed to the festive event and indeed, it wasn't bad. Well, sure, they were a few glitches: food not prepared as well as expected or being served a bit late, incorrect drinks brought etc. Both us "farangs" were quite ready to put up with this given the relaxed atmosphere. However, much to my surprise the organizer of the workshop, a Thai lady professor in the university, started complaining very loudly, calling the waiters and telling them things that I could not catch but that made them instantly sweat, turn red faced and flee walking backwards, bent and mumbling apologies. After a while a manager of the hotel came and he was almost insulted in front of us.

Quite an embarrassment. Probably not typical thai reaction I concur, but in several occasions in restaurants I've seen Thais being very aggressive to waiters when things aren't up to their expectations.

  12. With, as strange as it seems when I look around me, according to OECD average income per capita in Thailand was between 14,000 and 21,000 bahts/month in 2012 (source: http://www.oecd.org/site/seao/Thailand.pdf) and per household at 18,300 bahts in 2007 (same).

So I'd assume that based on these figures, nowadays average income per household should be significantly over 20,000 bahts/month.

This would make the southern region below average.

If someone finds better stats, please share.

  13. Why do so many foreigners sound gleeful at the prospect of Thailand's economy falling into recession?

    It's weird

Well, I was not making up what I wrote above and no, that doesn't make me especially happy because it means that there are people close to me who'll increasingly depend on my financial support for their living ermm.gif

I guess that I'm not the only one in this situation.

  14. Hardly really off the beaten tracks, but I still find Hua-Hin a good compromise between the facilities and amount of tourists, especially if you move out of downtown towards Khao Takiap and beyond. If you wish to go further south along the same coast, there are nice and quieter places like Bang Saphan.

As already suggested, the Kho Chang island in Tradt province. Haven't been there in quite a while, though. Probably has changed a lot.

The waterfall parks in the Kamphaeng Phet province (Klong Lan, Klong Namlai) probably aren't worth the trip, but certainly worth the detour on your way to/from the northern provinces from/to BKK. So is the historical park in KP, much, much smaller but so much quieter than Sukhothai's.

    Just random thoughts...

  15. Well, absolutely no doubt that you have a cracked version of Windows.

And a poor one too... the well-cracked ones allow you to use Windows Update :)

Let us know how it goes. I think that they'll tell you that it's a Windows-less product and that they've done this install as a complimentary service to you.

Heck, I can remember being offered this kind of free bonus while I was just watching a desktop sold with the once famous "thaified Linux" in a Big C supermarket, out of curiosity.
