  1. Thailand is definitely not a safe place to tourists.  The general traffic rules do not apply and there should be large signs at the departure gates in the airports "Welcome to paradise, good luck."

I'm not sure if there is a pedestrian crossing, the video looked too grainy to tell, but from CH3 this morning the couple said they were crossing a pedestrian crossing.  If so, the "big bike" is in trouble.

If there was no pedestrian crossing, then I don't understand why the "big bike" left the scene, such an a-hole.  If there was no pedestrian crossing, I don't think he did anything wrong and in fact the blame can be put to the parents.

I once crossed a street with a pram with my wife... my wife was in front while I pushed the pram... I knew motorcycles just wouldn't give a rats ass about anything.

  2. Nice try Doc, next time try to blame on something concrete so the system can be corrected.  It's the school system in Thailand that preys on parents.  The end game for most parents is to have their children finish from a highly reputable university so they can be accepted at the top 10 companies in Thailand.  It's the idea of getting out of the farm and to work in the office for an "easier" life.  So, it is common knowledge to have kids go to school very young and plan out their schools, from pre-school, middle school, high school, then university.  It's a link or a common link that leads to the top 10 companies here in Thailand.

Of the limitless possibilities that a child or person can achieve, we in Thailand only focus on the top 10 companies.  We are shaping our children not to be smart, but to be robots to cater for these top 10 companies.  This line of thinking is actually very common in the South East Asian Nations, very especially with the Chinese.

In this part of the world, we do not raise our children to become innovators, that is still USA, UK, and parts of Europe's best qualities, we in this region raise children to become robots.

It is acceptable, because it is the adults/parents that created this environment.

  3. I dumped True for their high prices.  I live in a condo and aside from AIS Fibre, there are also Sinet FTTx, and Loxinfo.  Sinet FTTx only provide service to condo's, though I'm not sure about Loxinfo.  I'm currently on Sinet and very happy with their speeds and prices.  I'm paying 899 for 70/30 mbps.

  4. I was told of a rumor a long time ago, of a dark-tinted black Fortuner and Camry roaming the streets of Bangkok for these bikers. When they found the bikers, the Fortuner and Camry would roll down their windows and shoot at these bikers, not all, just a few. I don't know how true these rumors are.

But that was back when the police couldn't do anything.

  5. No way that should have happened. The structures must have been grossly over loaded. And there was zero engineering. Hard to believe ...

Even in (developed) western countries, concrete poles alongside the roadway are not buried into the ground. The are set atop a platform base, from which the actual pole is bolted down onto. The base of course, is buried deep into the ground.

If a vehicle should strike the pole, it will not fully stop the vehicle, thus minimizing injury to the vehicle passenger(s), and the vehicle itself. The bolts holding the pole erect are specifically designed to break (at a certain force), so as to minimize the impact of any collision. As the pole falls, it may pull with it the cables between it and the next pole.

The tensile strength of the cable, and the fastener that binds it to the pole (and the next pole), determine whether the next pole will stand erect or also fall.

In life, dudu happens... in this accident, the cables could have broken away, but they did not; perhaps by intelligent design. Hence why all of the poles came down.

If the cables were power cables, then perhaps it was for the best that the cables did not snap and cause other damage (such as an electrical fire or an electrocution).

I think it was supposed to "break away" on the first poll failure, but as with all the polls in Bangkok, I think the "other" cables did not provide the needed "break away". In short, those internet cable are probably what brought down the polls.

  6. Who pays for this when most insurance is caped at 10 mil Baht? More than 10m baht damage there.

Suppose the owner or their insurance company could argue that hitting one pole should not bring down another 46 and whoever put them up was negligent with the foundations or the amount of cables/load they subsequently allowed to be put on them.

Obviously the company that owns the truck will pay for the damages, but usually they will put a minimum capital on the company so that if they every get sued they can declare bankruptcy. Similar thing happen on Rama 3 road, a truck pulling a crane accidentally rolled down a slope pulling down polls and damaging property.... company paid the first million then declared bankruptcy. Once the company is bankrupt, it's everyone to themselves.

  7. I want to blame the truck driver..... yet I also want to blame the rider..... But it's useless because the root of the problem is in the behavior in us all.

I do blame the people that is supposed to govern the country, keeping it civilized and safe.

It's easy to blame the rider,... but how do you suppose she takes her kids to school? walk? sit on a bus for 3 or 4 hours? It doesn't take a genius to figure that a scooter will be more efficient. I have tried to play "PM" in my head many times and it's not easy. It's not easy because this country has so much problems that's it's almost impossible to know where to start to get the problems fixed. The PM has a tough job, the people in the country isn't making it easier for him.

But I do want to kick the truck driver in the arse for being and idiot and not being more careful.

  8. so sad that the cyclists died.

No country can completely eliminate drunk drivers or drink-drive-drivers or DUI, but this country has far more serious problems than these drunk drivers or drivers under the influence.

    For example:

Kids riding on scooters... a family riding on scooter with no helmets.... more than 2 on a scooter... scooters going down a one way road... scooters riding on sidewalk (a.k.a foot paths).

...drum roll please.... LIFETIME drivers licenses. If you knew that airplane pilots had lifetime licenses, would you get on a plane?
