It's all relative. Some people take a cab to where they can get by bus. Some spend 500b on meals when they can fill up street food at a fifth of the cost.
There's lots of people for whom 100,000b/year to kiss IO hassles goodbye is peanuts for a good cause.

Lazada refund happy experience (though not COD):
Ordered with some amount of trepidation a Samsung S10+ from a Lazada seller for 22k charged to my Visa card. Sure enough the unit arrives already set up, clearly used.
Filled out the return form, dropped the phone off at a Kerry center and today see that the refund has been approved. Total turn around time 3 days.

Appearance matters in Asia. Not that nice clothes will offset incomplete paperwork or lack of funds.
Conservative attire complemented with a politely deferential but not subservient manner with authority is the way to go.

I cannot face that nightmare of being denied at both places again, so I am looking for some help.
Get an agent. Done.

3-5% return/month almost certainly means a Ponzi scheme. The chance of getting back money from such a setup which likely involves highly-connected Thais running it is between zero and nil.
In any case the whole set up stinks. Hate to say it but are you sure which side your GF is on? She and/or her friend has already got millions from you. And now they are asking for more to save her house if I understand correctly.
Make sure you are not being played. You being in the UK and she in Thailand isn't a good start.

Just because the OP is 71 and eligible for OA/retirement doesn't mean he should not even consider the Elite.
The 1 mil. 20-year Elite would probably carry him through to his final days (I'll pray he outlives it but longevity charts are what they are) without ever having to worry about renewal and agents and such in Thailand. Which might be a good thing as one gets older and less competent.
All depends on his finances. If he's wealthy enough a 20-year EV might be just the ticket.

I on the other hand, make my son happy and we get several days worth of chicken meals from the bucket I order.
Your kid deserves better.

Jeez, 880b. of KFC. Heck, if I worked there and some birdbrain called in this much I would try to stall him out of the goodness of my heart. And try to help by giving the OP 10 days to learn to fry a chicken.

As the OP points out it's a (glorified) tourist visa. So to be treated like the millions coming in each year. Which means major insurance requirements are unlikely.
