Nobody is forcing anyone to buy anything. There are always choices. For example should you wish to purchase a 12 month Non Immigrant class OA visa then there are conditions attached one of which may be insurance. Whether you decide to purchase said Non OA visa is a matter of personal choice.

That is a great response. You are right, one always has choices. For example if you do not like what the govt is doing you could just off yourself (that is me demonstrating how ridiculous your statements is btw).

Or wait here is another one that is less dark. No matter how bad govt legislation is, it does not matter right? You always have choices, like moving to Russia.

    Your argument is unsound.

Agree!  Being able to prove you can cover your cost of care and not be a burden on the State is what matters, not being forced to buy insurance from a Thai-based insurance company.  Something very fishy about this IMO.

Rest assured, 100%, not even up for discussion, any time the govt compels you to buy a product from the private sector, it is wrong.

People that support this type of thing need to wake the <deleted> up.

Mind you, insurances is not bad people, governments forcing you to buy insurance IS however.

Cutting through all the rubbish posts on here it should be mandatory for all expats living

    in the country.

In Sweden any visa issued for 2 months or more need to have a health  insurance policy

    before it is approved.

There was talk of a policy underwritten by a health insurance company (that has since been sold ) that was 47,000 Bht a year or thereabouts which qualified for long stay visas.

Visitors to NZ now (even short stay) have to sign a declaration that in the event of sickness

they will be responsible for their own care.

The screaming & yelling about having to have 800,000 Bht in the bank & guys who get agents to fuzz it should not really be living here.

You just started a rubbish post with "cutting through all the rubbish posts...".

I do not have a problem requiring visitors to have health insurance; it is simply a good idea.

However, the quote above leaves me speechless. Are there any valid figures to show a lack of repayment? Especially by long-stayers? Generally all I hear about are tourists, not long-term stayers, who don't have insurance and end up with a 'Go fund me' page.

Add a few Baht tax to all plane tickets/landings, use the money to aid foreigners hurt in the Kingdom, and problem solved.

It doesn't need to occur like this, and thus makes me wonder what else is at play...

What you have said essentially you do not have a problem with a government forcing people to buy products from private companies.

Insurance can be summed up as a middleman collecting fees and overhead to make your healthcare more expensive. All they do is bloat health costs and reap profits.

You may not have a problem with it. Hell, you may not have a problem with denying free speech and freedom of religion. But, it does not matter, some people do have a problem with it.

  5. I think the hardest thing is it gets taught improperly. Evidence being how few people can speak after semesters of college classes. This is not exclusive to Thai of course. People waste time learning ridiculous words they will never use, like engineer, and of course they will forget them. Reading and writing is taught way way to early in the process. There is so much bias in that regard because of course a Thai teacher cannot tell students not to learn to read and write, even though that is the way we should be taught initially. The list could go on and on.

Only if he wants do something at a immigration office. That is really the only way it can be enforced. They do not go out looking for people that have not done the reports.

A few people have been caught up when immigration raided some condos and such looking for illegals and owners not doing the reports in Bangkok. Most were fined for not reporting a change of address.

Have there been any reports of people being asked for tm30 out in the sticks, at the common military like id/passport checkpoints as you get near borders? I take it no considering your answer.

  7. I was looking for something like this too. THe problem is, it is not very useful.

What I started doing was writing down the words I needed by carrying a pen with me: I need to say X and can't. Write it down.

After a few days you have a list you wont be wasting your time by studying.

I found a list on thaipod101 though. 2000 words and you can export it as a pdf. You need a pay account to keep access to the priveledge. They sent me a 65% off deal yesterday. I still did not take them up on it. I was digging thaipod101 for a while and got to a point where I was seriously considering purchasing it but then I started their second section and a white guy was speaking some white Thai. I am sure it is ok for beginner instructional material but if you are going to make a horrible choice like that I have a hard time supporting it. One white guy ruined the entire website for me, everything was good I thought.

Because it would be so much easier if there were spaces between the words along with all those rules - and exceptions.

It would be easier if we spelled "phone" as fone too.

I will tell you what, when we set up a system to make our language much easier to learn, get back us here and maybe the Thais will consider it at that point.
