  1. Only Thai's can differentiate in a split-second, whether it's a "push button, traditionally required smile", or the "real one". Farangs can't.

    Cheers.

The idea that farangs can't decipher Thai smiles is silly. Looking in a person's eyes can usually resolve any ambiguity which might exist.

Yes, even the inscrutable Asians smile with their eyes if it is real.

  2. Gotta be muslim to enter Scandinavian. Orthodox Christian Ruskies, back to Russia. What's wrong with this picture?

From the article: "...all those transported had either a valid Russian visa or other residence permit. ..."

    So, not "Ruskies".

I did not find anything in the article that stated what country or countries those deported were from.

  3. In some parts Hua Hin there are always problems due to a lack of water as the province receives such little rainfall.

But this week we were told our communal pool is out of action due to a lack of water.

I dont want to think how bad it will be come April when it starts to get really hot.

What about when it's Songkran and they start with the water fights?

I hope the authorities, up to and including HRH Rama IX, ask people to curtail the water wastage associated with Songkran, in light of the ongoing drought.

    Will that happen? Who knows...

  4. Do like the US education system and youth sports in American has had to do over the years...give everyone a free pass in education and a trophe in sports...because the liberals do not want the minorities to feel bad...

So give all these actors and actress that did not win an Oscar...give them an Oscar...cheapen the experience...make the Oscars irrelevant...

Everyone is a crybaby in the US these days...there is no striving for excellence...the US is striving for equality...or should we say...mediocrity...IMHO

That is my home country, and we are complete agreement.

Rather than teach our children that they have to strive to succeed, instead we give them all trophies so their little feelings do not get hurt.

All that teaches them is that they can slack off and get the same as someone who tries hard. And reinforces that sense of entitlement that so many of our young folk seem to have now.

  5. yep... got aN email few days ago re offshore client rep role.. as requested, submitted my day/rate (being generous i put in what i was actually making 8 years ago)

... came back and asked would I accept 20% less due to current climate etc.... I said, ok, ... came back and asked would i go lower as client may want to negotiate (bear in mind this is one of the oil majors)...... Replied, that I was not interested in negotiations and suggested that they look for someone less qualified /experienced if they wanted to save money..

I think I would have done the same.

For them to come back and ask you to take 20% less is fine, that in negotiation.

But when you accepted that, then they came back and asked if you would go lower, that is chickenshit.

  6. All politicians lie.

All administrations juggle numbers to support their agenda.

Does anyone remember this gem from early in Obama's first term? "Jobs created or saved"

There is another meme floating around that has figures which show the opposite, that things are "worse" now than they were "however many" years ago...and the numbers probably have a basis in fact....depends on the facts used and how they are interpreted.

  7. No problem with the supply in Chokchai.

But my pond is almost dry and the catfish are diggin in!

We did have a substantial thunder storm with a lot of rain yesterday and another a week ago,

but that's all for the past couple of months.

In our moobaan (near the Chok Chai hospital), our water volume ("government water") is not so good...but it has been that way for a while.

We are the last house on a dead-end soi, all rain water drains past our place. I hear water running in the drain all the time; I believe there is a water line cracked somewhere "upstream".

I need to do a bit of investigating and try to localize the break...then see if I can get the "government" out here to fix it....yeah, I know...good luck with that.

  8. It would be the retirement visa. I believe the US embassy has you swear you can meet the requirement then issues the affidavit. I've read some have been asked to show proof when completing visa or checking in for the 90 day. I want no problems and plan on covering all the bases.

The US embassy does not have you "swear that you can meet the requirement".

You fill out the Income Statement form, which is personal information and an amount of income per month. By signing per the wording on the form you are attesting that the information is correct. The embassy is witnessing your signature.

I was asked by the U.S. Embassy lady - if I knew the ramifications of a false statement and was what I entered on the form true... a bit different than just witnessing a signature...

What you attest to on the paper by signing and what the Notary Public asks you to attest to are the same thing.

You are correct, they do ask you "you attest that what is on the form is true" (paraphrasing, I forget the exact verbiage).

The section where the Notary Public (Consular Associate) signs and dates has the verbiage "Subscribed and sworn to before me this" then has the space for the date and the Consular Associate signature.

That person is doing nothing to confirm what you said is true, only that you said it is true. The same as your signature on that form does.

  9. It's good for Trump to beat Cruz. For democrats no big surprise. Palin won't be on the ticket. Trump is too smart to do that.

    Yes.

Whatever one's opinion of Donald Trump, he is not a stupid man.

So when he says some things that appear to be "stupid", it makes me wonder what his game is; is he a serious candidate?

He is not my choice for President, but if it comes down to Donald or Hillary, he will get my vote.

An alternative would be to just not vote

Sometimes that is a tempting approach, but one I cannot quite bring myself to take.

It would be nice to vote for a candidate I like, rather than voting for the one I dislike the least.

  11. The only thing a Hummer is good for is making the driver look like a total bellend. Even worse than the crap Jeep puts out.

I am curious about how many of aforementioned vehicles you have owned.

It seems you have pretty strong opinions about them; I am wondering if they are based on experience.

    In the interests of disclosure:

    My current fleet in USA:

    - 2013 Ford F150 Supercab 4x4 - My daily driver when I am in USA. I bought this at the end of year 2013. So far I count it among the best vehicles I have owned.

    - 2004 Chev SIlverado 1500 4x4 - This is another good one. It was my daily driver for two years until I bought the F150. Now my son has this one at University. 160xxx miles and running strong.

    - 1992 Jeep Wrangler - This was my daily driver from 1995 until the end of 2012 when I bought the above mentioned Silverado. I got old tired of driving this one on fairly frequent trips between Dallas, TX and South Dakota (870 miles each way). For its age it has held up very well; it has taken nothing but maintenance items to keep this one running.

In Thailand I have the requisite Toyota Prerunner 4 door (2008 model), and also a 2005 Hilux Vigo "dumb cab". I have no complaints about either of these.

Previous vehicles since 1977 have included a mix of Chevrolets and Fords, and a very beat up well used Jeep CJ5 that got me through University. As well, my family was (still is, actually) in the new and used automobile business, so I had opportunities to drive just about everything, either in new or used form.

I have not owned a Jeep newer than the one I have, and have very limited experience driving anything newer, other than a test drive in a 2010 Wrangler Unlimited. It was a nice enough vehicle, but I did not buy it (I ended up with the F150 instead).

I can say that family and friends that have the newer Wranglers (JK models) really like them. I have no reason to think they are being less than truthful.

Hummer - I cannot disagree with your view. Pops had one at the dealership for a bit; we all got to try it out. I was not impressed.

edited - cleaned up some ugly formatting

  12. I find that marinated liver does the trick. you can easily take out care of the entire soi dog population with a few kg of lovingly prepared liver. I got bitten at the last place I lived, so did a preemptive strike before I moved to this place

    Yeah,sure you did.

    No really, he did.

Then, right after he posted this, I went over to his house and killed him for killing my dog.

Louse: I have two preferred brands of marinate, one a weedkiller and the other a rat poison. Interested? By the way, I've done another cull since, and will continue to do them whenever the need arises

Jackson: This post suggests you got the wrong man. Try again, I'm in Phitsanulok if you want to try it away from the keyboard

Not my soi, not my janwaat, not my story.

If it were, we would surely have a face-to-face about it.

How would that come out? I have no idea.

Would anyone end up hurt, or dead, over a dog? I doubt it.

  13. I dont mind spending money on good beef. For me marbeling can be a sign of good beef and if grilled or broiled correctly it's great .the marbeling dissolves and helps with flavor. What I dont like is having to trim excess off and to have to chew through it. That's why I have to see the meat before I buy it. Seems in this country they leave as much as possible on as they can. Just look at the brocholi stalks here.........

Well, more is better, right? At least that seems to be the perception here...

Water bottles filled to the brim, so one is almost certain to spill some.

I guess it is non-comprehension of "net contents".

  14. The sales staff might offer you the option of "original" Windows or "copy" Windows.

When I bought a laptop for my wife a few years ago those two options were offered. I went with "original" and was handed a Windows disc, genuine, still in the original packaging, for my approval. After my approval they went ahead and installed the Windows on the machine.

    You make the choice.

  15. Here is my dog restraint setup, for two mutts:

    post-32253-0-34152200-1453273243_thumb.j

This lets me make the leads long enough each dog can get his snout over the side to look around, but not enough to where the dog can get his body over the edge of the truck bed.

If the dogs need to be further apart, I can move the snaplinks outward and shorten up the leads.

If one dog, I can move the lead to the center and make it longer, or attach the leads from both sides to restrict movement as needed.

  16. I will be interesting to see what form this business takes.

From the article, the only thing I see for sure is that Switch has set up a subsidiary (SuperNAP Thailand) to "build and operate the data center"...that does not necessarily imply ownership, although it very well could.

Also, the fact that Switch is based in Las Vegas does not mean that this data center foreshadows a casino (or casinos) popping up The Kingdom.

Switch provides data services to many Fortune 500 companies, such as eBay, Sony, and Google.

It looks to me like this is Switch's foray into the internationally-sited data center arena, with Kasikorn Bank and Siam Commercial Bank as customers from the start.
