  1. Two Thai weightlifters, Theerapong Silachai and Surodchana Khambao, delivered stunning performances at the Paris Olympics, clinching silver and bronze medals respectively last night. Theerapong Silachai, a 21-year-old athlete, earned the silver medal in the Men’s 61 kg weightlifting category, making history as the first Thai male to capture an Olympic silver in weightlifting. Silachai, despite being the sixth-ranked qualifier, was the only competitor to successfully complete all six of his attempts. He recorded a total lift of 132 kg in the snatch and 171 kg in the clean and jerk, amounting to an impressive 303 kg. His final tally surpassed the 300 kg mark for the very first time, falling just 7 kg short of the gold medalist, China’s Li Fabin. In the Women's 49 kg event, Surodchana Khambao secured a bronze medal with an overall lift of 200 kg. Khambao, already an esteemed athlete with a commendable history, has previously won three gold medals in the Women's 53 kg category at the 2018 Junior World Weightlifting Championships in Tashkent. She also claimed a bronze in the same weight class at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and narrowly missed out on a podium finish at the 2023 World Weightlifting Championships in Riyadh by finishing fourth. Thailand's success in weightlifting at the Paris Olympics underscores the nation’s strength in the sport, especially considering the intense competition. These remarkable achievements by Silachai and Khambao have not only brought pride to their country but also inspire budding athletes in Thailand and beyond. With their impressive performances, the future for Thai weightlifting looks brighter than ever, setting the stage for Thailand to potentially dominate in future international competitions. 3. In a peculiar and tense situation, a Belgian man found himself trapped inside his car after the battery drained, rendering the doors inoperable. The incident unfolded at a gas station in Kamphaeng Phet Province, where the man had taken a short nap after a long drive. Around 2:00 a.m. on August 7, 2024, officers from the Kamphaeng Phet News Image Rescue Foundation received an urgent call from a concerned convenience store employee. The employee had noticed the man trapped inside a locked red BMW and promptly sought assistance. The rescue team swiftly arrived at the scene to find the car doors unresponsive due to an entirely drained battery. Inside, the 40-year-old Belgian tourist was visibly distressed and weakened. Rescue officers repeatedly tried to instruct the man to press the unlock button, but their efforts proved futile without a functional electrical system. As time ticked on and the man’s condition visibly worsened due to stifling heat and plummeting oxygen levels, the rescuers made the tough decision to break the car window. Smashing the glass was the only viable option to prevent any further danger to the man’s health. Thankfully, the quick intervention worked, and the foreigner emerged from the vehicle, albeit feeble and faint from the ordeal. The Belgian tourist, who had journeyed from Chiang Rai to Chonburi, explained that he had parked at the gas station to rest, allowing the fan to run while he slept. Unfortunately, the fan’s continuous operation drained the car’s battery completely. Feeling trapped, he struggled to escape until the convenience store employee noticed his plight and alerted the authorities. The entire operation lasted nearly two hours, but thanks to the diligent efforts of the rescuers, the man was ultimately guided to safety. After receiving immediate assistance, including provisions from the tourist police, he was able to continue his journey, much relieved and wiser. 5. U.S. DEPARTMENT OF STATE Office of the Spokesperson For Immediate Release STATEMENT BY MATTHEW MILLER, SPOKESPERSON August 7, 2024 On the Dissolution of Move Forward Party in Thailand The United States is deeply concerned by Thailand’s Constitutional Court ruling today ordering the dissolution of the Move Forward Party and the banning of 11 of its leaders from politics. This decision disenfranchises the more than 14 million Thais who voted for the Move Forward Party in the May 2023 election and raises questions about their representation within Thailand’s electoral system. The Constitutional Court’s decision also jeopardizes Thailand’s democratic progress and runs counter to the aspirations of the Thai people for a strong, democratic future. Inclusive political participation strengthens social cohesion and is a critical component of resilient national institutions. The United States does not take a position in support of any political party, but as a close ally and friend with deep and enduring ties, we urge Thailand to take actions to ensure fully inclusive political participation, and to protect democracy and the freedoms of association and expression. 13. Pita Limjaroenrat. Foreig diplomats. File photo courtesy: Facebook/ทุกคนคะ-จากกรณีคุณพิธา-ลงภาพคู่ท่านทูตและเจ้าหน้าที่จากประเทศในยุโรปเข้ามาพูด Thailand's Constitutional Court has today called for respect from all quarters, including academics, politicians, and foreign diplomats, following its decision to dissolve the Move Forward Party. The Court's ruling, grounded in severe violations of political party laws, marks a significant moment in the nation's political landscape. In its verdict, the Court emphasised the importance of respecting judicial decisions and adhering to international diplomatic protocols. According to the Court, the dissolution was necessary to uphold political laws that apply equally to all parties. The verdict stated, “Each country has its own constitution and internal legislation, which differ from other countries’. Therefore, any expression of opinion should be conducted according to international and diplomatic standards.” This statement underscores the Court's expectation for diplomatic entities to approach the issue with respect for the nation’s legal framework. The Court also noted that the Move Forward Party's actions posed a threat to the country's democracy under a constitutional monarchy. By dissolving the party and barring its executives from politics for ten years, the Court aims to safeguard the democratic process and uphold the rule of law. The ruling has not only stirred local political circles but has also drawn international attention. Prior to the decision, a group of European Union diplomats met with Move Forward Party's former leader, Pita Limjaroenrat, in a move interpreted as support for the party and an attempt to influence the Court’s decision. Additionally, some ASEAN parliamentarians have publicly opposed the dissolution. This case highlights the delicate balance between domestic law and international diplomatic relations. As the dust settles, the call for respect and adherence to mutual protocols will test the international community's response to internal judicial processes. -- 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 15. A supporter of the Move Forward Party reacts at the party headquarters after the Constitutional Court ordered the dissolution of the party in Bangkok, Thailand, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Amnesty International has strongly criticised the dissolution of Thailand's main opposition party, Move Forward, calling it a grave blow to human rights in the country. The condemnation comes after Thailand’s Constitutional Court decided to dissolve the party for proposing reforms, sparking concerns over freedom of expression and political repression. Amnesty International’s Senior Director, Deprose Muchena, voiced dismay at the court’s ruling, stating, "Dissolving the party, merely for advocating for reform, constitutes a serious violation of the rights to freedom of expression and association of lawmakers, who were simply performing their duty of proposing laws." Muchena added, "The authorities’ relentless harassment of the political opposition starkly contradicts Thailand's public commitment to human rights, especially as it seeks a seat on the UN Human Rights Council." The Move Forward party, which had garnered significant public support in recent years, was seen as a vital voice advocating for democratic reforms in Thailand. The court’s decision to dissolve the party has led to widespread outrage among its supporters. Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin called for calm, urging all sides to accept the court’s decision. "I believe the Move Forward party has a plan and means to continue its political activities," the Prime Minister remarked, attempting to quell rising tensions. Meanwhile, student groups across Thailand have announced plans for rallies to protest against the court’s decision. The Department of Humanitarian and Human Rights Affairs of the Chulalongkorn University Student’s Club has organised a gathering at Pathumwan skywalk in Bangkok, set for 6 pm this evening. Additionally, law faculties at Thammasat and Chiang Mai Universities will hold rallies on their campuses, while students at Maha Sarakham University have planned a separate demonstration. As Thailand grapples with this political upheaval, the international community watches closely, concerned about the implications for democracy and human rights in the country. -- 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 17. Former leader of Move Forward Party Pita Limjaroenrat talks to reporter with lawmakers from Move Forward Party during press conference at Move Forward Party headquarter in Bangkok, Thailand, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Just hours after the Move Forward Party was dissolved by Thailand's Constitutional Court, its former key members announced that they will unveil a new party this Friday to continue their political efforts. Sirikanya Tansakun, deputy leader of the now-disbanded Move Forward, hinted that the new party might continue to address the controversial Article 112 of the Criminal Code, which led to Move Forward’s dissolution. She stressed that the court ruling does not explicitly ban amendments to the article. “Everyone believes that the article is problematic. But we need to discuss it in more detail when we move to our new home,” she said during a news conference following the court’s decision. Sirikanya is speculated to lead a backup political party, strategically prepared for such an eventuality. “We will move on and will not abandon the mission assigned to us by the people as long as they support us,” she stated. Before its dissolution, Move Forward had 148 MPs. Five, who were part of its executive committee, lost their MP status due to the court ruling. The future alignment of the remaining MPs remains uncertain, with some expected to join parties in the coalition government. Former party leader Chaithawat Tulathon, speaking at the press conference, described the court’s judgement as “setting a dangerous precedent for constitutional interpretation and laws.” He warned that the verdict might undermine the democratic system under the monarchy by transforming it. Chaithawat, along with 11 executive members, faces a 10-year political ban, including the party’s chief advisor, Pita Limjaroenrat. Despite his ban, Pita affirmed his commitment to political activism as a private citizen. “We may grieve today, but tomorrow we will channel our anger and energy into every polling booth,” he encouraged supporters who had gathered at the party’s headquarters. Many Move Forward supporters expressed their disappointment and anger at the court's decision. Pita reassured them, asserting, “We did nothing aimed at overthrowing or being hostile toward the democratic system as ruled by the court.” -- 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. 18. Thailand Parliament rejects pornography and sex toy legalisation by Petch Petpailin Photo via Manager Online Parliament today rejected the Move Forward Party’s (MFP) proposal to legalise professions related to pornography and the sex toy industry. 19. Parliament today rejected the Move Forward Party’s (MFP) proposal to legalise professions related to pornography and the sex toy industry. The decision was based on concerns about explicit advertising and potential violations of Muslim religious principles. MFP MP Taopiphop Limjittakorn submitted a draft to revise Section 287 of the Criminal Law to legalise professions related to pornography and the sex toy industries. Section 287 states that anyone who produces, possesses, imports, exports, or distributes indecent documents, paintings, publications, pictures, advertisements, photos, films, voice records, or other materials must face imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both. Taopiphop’s draft aimed to allow people to produce, possess, import, export, or distribute indecent documents, paintings, publications, pictures, advertisements, photos, films, voice records, or other materials legally, provided the content is not related to children or people under 20 years old. During the discussion, MFP MPs supported the revision of the law, arguing that the ban on professions related to pornography and the sex toy industries violates the rights and freedoms of residents, which contradicts the Thai Constitution. MFP MPs also stated that sex toys have benefits, such as reducing the number of sex crimes, stress, and problems among couples. Coalition parties MPs from the coalition government parties expressed their opposition to the revision. Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party MP Duangrit Benjathikoon stated that the revision had more negative effects than positive ones. Duangrit stated that pornography could lead to domestic issues, sexual assault, and sexual violence, as people might imitate behaviour shown in porn. Pheu Thai Party MP Cherdchai Tantisirin expressed concerns over explicit advertisements for pornography and sex toys. He did not agree to legalise professions in porn production but acknowledged that sex toys might have benefits. Cherdchai urged the MFP to draft a separate law on sex toys. Pheu Thai Party MP Teerachai Saenkaew also opposed the legalisation of sex content creators, saying it violates Thai culture and tradition. He urged consideration for the majority of people who disagreed with it. “Thai people, both men and women, are shy. Only some are shameless.” Teerachai added that the legalisation of these professions would not make Thailand more modern and that Thailand did not have to be the same as other Western countries. Prachachart Party MP Worravit Baru expressed his opinion as a representative of Muslim people in Thailand. “Muslim people can have sex and access sex education. However, prostitution and pornography production violate religious rules.” During the vote, the draft revision to Section 287 of the Criminal Law was rejected, with 284 MPs and senators voting no and only 145 Parliament members approving it. MFP MP Aitarnik Chitwiset later shared her thoughts on her X (Twitter) account. “Failure the first time does not mean hopeless the next time.” The MP promised to work with people who would be affected by this revision to gain approval in the next proposition. ORIGINAL STORY: Thai MP aims to ‘stimulate’ economy with sex industry legalisation A Move Forward Party (MFP) MP today announced plans on social media to legalise professions related to the pornography and sex toy industries in Thailand by revising the Criminal Law of Thailand. The revision draft is expected to be proposed during Parliament today, July 10. The MFP MP, Taopiphop Limjittrakorn, shared his plan to legalise professions related to porn and sex toys on his Twitter account today. “Today, the bill #UnlockPornSexToy will be proposed in the Parliament session. Please watch to see if it will be passed or not. Let’s see if Thailand stops being bullsh*t in the Parliament.” Many Thai Twitter users expressed their opinions under the post. Some agreed and cheered Taopiphop on while others opposed his idea, saying it would damage Thailand’s beautiful culture and traditions. Others agreed with Taopiphop but doubted the bill would ever be approved in Thailand. Taopiphop included the entire draft of the bill in his post, allowing his followers to see more details. According to the document, Taopiphop and his team aim to amend Section 287 of the Criminal Law, which states that producing, possessing, importing, exporting, or distributing indecent documents, paintings, publications, pictures, advertisements, photos, films, voice records, or other materials can result in imprisonment of up to three years, a fine of up to 60,000 baht, or both. This revision would allow Thai sex content creators to work in the industries legally. However, those working in the pornography industry must be at least 20 years old and must not include violent actions in their content. The document suggests that banning people from working in this industry violates their rights and freedom to choose a profession or type of work, according to Section 40 of the Thai Constitution. The proposed amendment is also expected to benefit the Thai economy. In addition to the pornography legalisation, another MFP MP, Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, will also propose the draft of the Fiscal Discipline Act in the parliamentary session, aiming mainly to make military spending more transparent. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Manager Online Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-08 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. National park rangers were alerted to the flash flood on the evening of Tuesday, August 6, by a Thai tour guide. The guide believed the flash flood occurred due to heavy rain over the previous two days. The guide explained that rainwater surged down from the mountain forest and into the cave while he and another guide were leading the foreign tourists out. He and all the tourists managed to escape the flood but one guide was swept away. The ranger and rescue team rushed to the scene and took the tour guide and 22 foreigners to a nearby floating accommodation to rest. Two tourists, a 23 year old Dutch-English woman and a 19 year old Dutch woman, were injured in the incident. One had a knee wound, while the other had a sprained ankle. They were taken to Ban Ta Khun Hospital by boat. The rest of the tourists stayed overnight at the accommodation. Officers then launched a search for the missing tour guide, later identified as 37 year old Pongyot. They located him in the cave at approximately 3.20am on Wednesday , August 7, but he had tragically drowned. It took officers over two hours to transport Pongyot’s body to Ban Takhun Hospital for an autopsy. Matichon reported a similar incident on October 13, 2007, when eight Thai and foreign tourists died in a comparable flash flood. Due to the past tragedy, the national park closes the Nam Talu Cave during the rainy season, between June and November. Tour guides and tourists are advised to plan their trips carefully and check weather conditions before entering the cave, even outside the rainy season. There is no report explaining how or why the Thai tour guides and tourists entered the cave despite the national park’s annual closure during the rainy season. 25. A 72 year old American man, travelled across the globe to reunite with his Thai daughter after being separated for 48 years. With assistance from a friend with a Thai wife and a renowned hotel owner in Nang Rong, Buriram, the father and daughter finally met, embracing each other with tears of joy. Terry Howley, a 72 year old American man, and 49 year old Kanjana Milkewicz, from Yai Yam Watthana, Chaloem Phra Kiat district, Buriram, had been separated for nearly five decades. Despite the long separation, both father and daughter never gave up hope of finding each other. Modern technology and help from a friend with a Thai wife and a well-known hotel owner in Nang Rong enabled this emotional reunion. Upon meeting, both father and daughter were overwhelmed with emotions, crying and hugging each other tightly. Kanjana presented Terry with red roses and a garland of marigolds to express her love for her father. Kanjana shared that Terry, a former American GI, was stationed in Nakhon Phanom, Thailand, 50 years ago during the Vietnam War. At that time, he met Kanjana’s mother, Supaporn, now 73 years old, who was pregnant by another American soldier who refused to acknowledge the child. Terry, however, took care of Supaporn during her pregnancy and continued to support her and Kanjana until she was one year old. Terry then returned to his home country, and Kanjana and her mother lost contact with him. As Kanjana grew older, she made numerous attempts to locate Terry, posting on social media to find him. She learned that Terry had also been searching for her and her mother. Daughter reunion In 2019, they finally reconnected through social media and kept in touch via Facebook. Terry had planned to visit Kanjana and her mother in Thailand in 2019, but the Covid-19 pandemic hindered his travel plans. He promised to visit once the situation improved. On July 31, Terry arrived in Thailand, intending to surprise Kanjana and her mother. He landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport and contacted his friend with a Thai wife to pick him up but they missed each other. Terry then took a bus to Buriram and a taxi to Nang Rong. However, he had difficulty communicating with the taxi driver, who eventually dropped him off at the Nang Rong Hotel to rest. The hotel staff helped Terry locate Kanjana by searching her name on Facebook, where they found her posts seeking her father. The hotel contacted Kanjana, who immediately rushed to the hotel to meet her father. Overwhelmed with joy, she expressed her disbelief at reuniting with Terry after 48 years. Although Terry is not her biological father, he has cared for her since birth, creating a strong bond between them. Terry plans to stay in Thailand until August 21 and will visit Kanjana’s mother at their home. If the opportunity arises, Kanjana hopes to visit Terry in the United States in the future. Tan Worachak, a staff member at Nang Rong Hotel, recounted that on August 4, a taxi brought a guest to the hotel who stayed for one night. The guest tried to communicate that he was searching for someone. Tan contacted the hotel owner, who spoke with the guest and learnt that he had travelled from the United States to find his long-lost daughter, reported Sanook. Tan expressed happiness in being part of the reunion, helping a father and daughter reconnect after so many years. by Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Sanook Source: The Thaiger2024-08-07 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million.
