Picture: Thai Rath Police in Khon Kaen are so worried about the menace from drugs like Ya Ba that they are arming the population. They have started a project that translates as One Prod Per Sub-District. These are prods and poles designed to subdue people high on amphetamines or booze who are creating a public nuisance. Picture: Thai Rath The police were on hand to train 180 participants in how to do their job...before they arrive on the scene that is. Thai Rath called it new tech but it seemed low tech but effective according to locals who gave the thumbs up to the initiative. Picture: Thai Rath People noted that there has been an explosion in drug and mental health related cases meaning that kamnans and phu yai ban (local leaders) are often left with no recourse but to take matters into their own hands before the RTP can turn up. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Sanook Thai Caption: "Makheua" numbers under a coffin Thailand is almost at fever pitch as another lottery draw is coming tomorrow, Friday. Experts are looking for ways to get the all important numbers like the last three digits. The latest craze is passing makheua or small Thai green aubergines under the coffins of dead people, then cutting them up to divine the numbers, reported Sanook. This worked for a drawing in August with many winning on the number 358 following a guy's TikTok post about his departed gran. Now the same person's aunt has shuffled off her mortal coil too and this time the numbers are different. In a viral video viewed two million times people were being told to back 868 or 550 on the back of aunty's demise. It seems Thais will go anywhere for an edge in winning the lottery, notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath published lots of pictures of farmers forlornly pointing at what is loosely referred to as their road. It's a mass of tire tracks and rivulets and they can't get their produce through to market. Some one hundred complainants from five villages across two sub-districts gathered to tell the media their version of road rage. Picture: Siam Rath Phajon, 59, said they were fed up with it all. Sanook Thai Caption: (School) golf course plowed up The director of a school in the north east who turned his kid's football pitch into a mini golf course has been forced into a quick about turn. Following a volley of complaints the director has plowed up his golf course and returned the football pitch to its previous condition. Picture: Sanook Residents were furious smelling a frivolous personal fancy at the expense of their football loving children. But the director continued to maintain in a Sanook report yesterday that he had used all his own money "for the good and the future of the children" under his care. He called the golf course a "pilot" project in afternoon activities. The drama played out in the Nong Yan Sin sub-district of Nakhon Phanom, NE Thailand. Thai Rath reported on the aftermath of an accident in Nonthaburi on the Bang Kruay - Sai Noi Road in which a 12 year old boy was hit by a motorcyclist while using a Zebra Crossing. Both are in a grievous condition in hospital and have been unable to give evidence as yet. The boy is in Phra Nang Klao Hospital with a brain hemorrhage, fractured collarbone and damage to his central nervous system. The biker Theerin, 25, has severe facial injuries in Bang Bua Thong Hospital. The boy's mother Orn, 39, spoke of problems for insurance for her son. The hospital told her because it was an accident she needs to front up money first despite the fact she has the universal health coverage (bat thong). Her son is a M1 pupil at Bang Bua Thong School. Police said they are waiting on reports of the severity of the injuries and the recovery of the motorcyclist and the pedestrian before proceeding in the matter. A resident at the scene said they need a pedestrian overpass; there have been many accidents there and drivers rarely stop at the Zebra. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. TNR Staff CARETAKER Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwan inspected Khlong Saen Saep floodgate in Minburi to monitor the flooding in the capital with Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt being on hand to brief him on the situation, Naewna newspaper said this afternoon (Sept. 14). Chadchart told Prawit, who was accompanied by Deputy Defence Minister Gen. Chaicharn Changmongkol and two Palang Pracharat Party MPs, that Bangkok has been lashed by torrential rain for days now and he is going to propose to the Office of the National Water Resources that a water expressway be built to drain floodwater. This water expressway would not go through the Phra Khanong area, he added. By Editor The most frequently asked question at the Be Well Medical Center is about Covid-19 vaccination boosts; to boost or not to boost. Should we get them? When? Which one? Dr Paemika Pidchayathanakorn, family doctor and partner at the Be Well Medical Center Dr. Paemika, general practitioner and family doctor, has some answers to these questions; her opinion follows. Dr Paemika Pidchayathanakorn, family doctor and partner at the Be Well Medical Center After consulting with colleagues in various countries, I must conclude that expert opinions and government directives on this matter globally differ; however, some conclusions are shared by many. Vaccinations have been crucial in containing Covid-19. Researchers are to be complimented for the speed in developing effective vaccines. While the immunization effect of the vaccines provides only limited protection for contracting and spreading of the virus, the real gain is that the risk of serious illness or death is significantly reduced; up to 10 times lower compared to unvaccinated persons as studies have shown. While all World Health Organization (WHO) approved vaccines have proven to be effective, many studies across multiple populations have shown that mRNA vaccines (e.g. Pfizer, Moderna) create a higher level of efficacy than vector vaccines (e.g. Astra, Sinovac). Consequently, many governments (including Thailand) and health professionals have suggested prioritizing mRNA vaccines, despite the higher costs. However, there are also studies showing good results of people using combinations of mRNA and vector jabs. Immunity wears off and the speed at which this decline takes place depends on the virus, the vaccine, and the person. It occurs quicker in older individuals. As Covid-19 and all of its future mutations are likely to stay around for a long time, there is a need to keep the immunization level at an optimum level. That is where boosters come in. The science is still developing, but for now, it seems that 6 months after the last inoculation a booster is due. This holds true first of all for the elderly population and for those with multiple underlying health conditions. Hence my advice to high-risk persons is to get a booster after six months. But also for anyone else wishing to reduce the chance of serious illness, including pregnant women (as recently recommended by The Royal Thai College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists), regular booster shots are to be considered. As far as children is concerned, we closely follow the government’s latest directions. The Royal College of Paediatricians of Thailand announced this week it will issue guidelines recommending mRNA- Covid-19 vaccine be given to children aged six months to five years. We now await confirmation of the Ministry of Public Health if this recommendation will be implemented. The U.S. FDA determined COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective for kids 6 months and older. Surely many of you heard about the new shots from Pfizer and Moderna which are bivalent, meaning that they target both the original Covid strain and omicron’s BA.5 subvariant. These new vaccines, which are expected to show higher effectiveness, are already approved in other countries, including the EU, and we trust they will soon become available in Thailand as well. For some people this may be a reason to wait for the (next) booster, but I recommend high-risk persons not to delay and use the currently available vaccines. Billions of vaccinations have shown that the risks are greatly outweighed by the benefits. In case you have hesitations or questions about COVID vaccines, boosters, or side effects I propose that you consult your doctor. At the time of writing, boosters are available free of charge at both Hua Hin Hospital and the Hua Hin Red Cross. Hua Hin Hospital: Every Tuesday 9.00am to 11.30am Hua Hin Red Cross: Pfizer for above 12 years old; Monday to Friday 8.00am to 3.30pm -- © Copyright Royal Coast Review 2022-09-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Sanook Thai Caption: Who's right, who's wrong? Sanook reported that social media was abuzz with comment in a story about a woman who went to the police after some of her designer wardrobe was damaged. Ploy told the Muang Khon Kaen police in Thailand's north east that she had a couple of Chanel tops in for washing and ironing. They were worth 300,000 baht. But she was aghast to see that their pristine white color had changed when she went to pick up her load from the launderette. She explained that she has tons of designer stuff, what with being in real estate, and it was only two items but the shop should fess up to what they'd done. Meanwhile the shop at the center of the controversy - fast becoming laundrygate - denied that the items were now a different shade. They refuted evidence provided by Ploy that showed before and after pictures of the tops. Muang police are trying to get to the bottom of this drama. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet approved two measures to help mitigate the energy crisis, covering diesel and electricity, targeting primarily lower-income earners. The Cabinet in a weekly meeting approved a set of mitigating measures for the energy crisis, including special electricity rates and an extension of the special excise tax rate for diesel. Proposed by the Ministry of Energy, a special electricity rate scheme will be offered to households based on their electricity consumption. Households consuming up to 300 electricity units per month will be eligible for a 0.92 baht per unit discount. Households with higher electricity consumption of up to 500 units per month will receive discounts for the Ft tariff based on their consumption rate, namely a 75% or 0.515 baht per unit discount for households consuming 301-350 units per month, a 45% or 0.309 baht discount for households consuming 351-400 units per month, and a 15% or 0.103 baht per unit discount for households consuming 401-500 units per month. These reduced electricity rates will be provided for 4 months from September to December this year. Some 9.13 billion baht of government funding is expected to be used to help around 21.46 million people. Other campaigns approved by the Cabinet include the 2-month extension for the current 5 baht diesel oil excise tax, now valid until 20 November, and a 6-month excise tax waiver for B0 diesel for electricity generation, valid until 15 March 2023. These campaigns are expected to help mitigate the impacts faced by the general public and businesses amidst the energy crisis. The excise tax schemes alone are expected to cost the Excise Department a 20 billion baht revenue loss. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The acting prime minister has viewed an exhibit on Guiness World Records’ granting of the world’s longest piece of petrified wood title to a specimen in Tak province. Hopes are now pinned on the specimen enabling Tak to become a world-class geological tourism destination. Ahead Cabinet meeting, acting prime minister Gen. Prawit Wongsuwon viewed an exhibit on the world’s longest petrified wood specimen. The specimen was discovered in the area that will soon become Doi Soi Malai-Mai Klai Pen Hin National Park in Tak province. At 69.7 meters, it is the longest petrified wood specimen in the world, as certified by Guiness World Records (GWR). The environment ministry and the Geological Society of Thailand held a ceremony to acknowledge the new world record on July 8. The agencies now aim to elevate the petrified wood site to a world-class geological tourism destination. On this occasion, Gen. Prawit inquired about the discovery of the specimen and the process involved in wood petrification. He also urged everybody to help conserve this geological heritage site and treat it as a national treasure. Doing so would keep the site intact so the public and Thailand’s youths can keep learning from it. The previous world record for petrified wood belonged to a specimen discovered in Xinjiang, China. That specimen is a 38-meter-long piece of petrified wood. Thailand’s specimen is almost 70 meters long and has been certified by Guinness World Records as the world’s longest piece of petrified wood. Picture: 77kaoded A 63 year old motorcycle taxi rider called Subin Waitook got far less than he bargained for after agreeing to take a farang to Central Bang Na. The agreed fee was 300 baht but when they got there the foreigner changed the goalposts and said they wanted to be taken back to Bearing BTS. Expecting to be paid a newly agreed 450 baht Subin held out his hand. Instead of Thai money the foreigner handed him what he thought was a 20 Euro coin. That would more than cover the journey, thought Subin as the foreigner hurriedly went up the BTS staircase and out of sight. Picture: 77kaoded Subin went back to the rank as proud as Punch only to get the sucker punch when he inquired of a buddy how much the coin was really worth. He was informed that he had been a bit of a plonker. The coin was a 20 cent coin making his windfall worth not 700+ baht but precisely 7.36 baht at yesterday's rates. Not surprisingly the "win" advised people to only accept fares in baht: "How are we to know what foreign money is worth?", he lamented. Picture: 77kaoded Before relating another tale of woe as to how a separate farang had asked him to take her to Robinson's from her hotel, didn't pay, asked to be taken back, then only paid 70 baht rather than double for the round trip, reported 77kaoded. Now he has the picture of a 20 cent Euro coin on his phone for posterity. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-09-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. While flooding has affected tourism on Koh Chang, some foreign tourists are still making the trip there. Photos: Naewna TNR Staff HIT by heavy rain, floods and landslides the tourist island Koh Chang is now focusing on reviving tourism at yearend by launching sports and entertainment activities as a draw-card, Naewna newspaper said today (Sept. 13).
