Daily News Thai Caption: Drugs crackdown Daily News reported that the authorities in Surat Thani in southern Thailand were starting a crackdown that they called a "War on Drugs". This followed calls from senior politicians and the RTP chief for crackdowns on drugs and weapons among the public and the police force in the aftermath of the NE pre-school massacre reported elsewhere on ASEAN NOW. The media reported that the governor of Surat Thani Wichawut Jinto and the head of Region 8 of the Narcotics Control Board Pheera Kanchanapong had agreed to work together on the issue of drugs. It was noted that the June 9th liberalization of marijuana in the country had provided an entry point for many young people into drug culture. Pheera said that tests on 10,000 school children and young people (under the legal age of 20) in the province had revealed 0.9 had THC in their system. A number of these were even primary school children. Wichawut said that urine tests on police and many more children would take place. Picture: Daily News Two CNN reporters who violated the pre-school crime scene in Uthai Sawan district where a former cop shot and stabbed dozens of people including many children last Thursday have been fined. Daily News had a picture of the reporters - named earlier as Anna Coren, 47 from Australia and Daniel Hodge, 34 from Britain - talking to RTP chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat and his deputy Pol Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakpan. Surachate said that he was satisfied that the reporters did not intentionally violate the crime scene and that they had asked "Can I come in?" They had been shown inside where they started filming and were later seen going over a fence after crime scene tape was put in place. This had followed a wreath laying ceremony. Surachate said it might have been a case of "miscommunication". What was established was that the reporters had flown into Thailand from Hong Kong following the massacre. After the incursion into the crime scene they had not fled Thailand but gone to stay in Udon Thani. Their actions were not intentional. They had tourist visas and were not allowed to work so both were fined 5,000 baht and escorted to the airport to leave by police. They said they both wanted to leave as soon as possible anyway. CNN was embarrassed by the incident that called into question press ethics. Damrongsak said that the case would not result in the pair being blacklisted but that the RTP had asked for their footage to be deleted. ASEAN NOW notes that pictures of a red carpet being unfurled were widely shared on social media along with a ceremony with many people in uniform. A wreath was being laid for an important person. Daily News Thai Caption: Crackdown to end it once and for all The tragedy in Nong Bua Lamphu in north eastern Thailand last week has resulted in a crackdown on drugs and gun crime, reported Daily News. And that includes illegality within the Royal Thai Police itself. It has been ordered by Thai prime minister Prayuth Chan-ocha who heads the Police Commission. The Royal Thai Police chief Pol gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat yesterday spoke to the media at RTP HQ about what this means. He said there would be an initial wave of a crackdown followed by continual action. It'll be a crackdown with teeth this time. Damrongsak promised action in all areas of drug crime including going after the big players. When it comes to guns there will be a big drive to make sure that guns are only in the hands of sensible people. Investigations will be made to weed out people who own guns who exhibit inappropriate behavior. Producers of guns and sellers online as well as importers and exports can expect a knock on the door. Nowhere will be out of reach of the RTP be it land and sea borders or traditional places where guns are made, moved and traded. There will be more checkpoints to stem the flow of guns and drugs. Not content to solve the drug and gun menace in wider society Damrongsak also announced that there will be a program called "Tamruat See Khao" - White Police. White being the color of transparency and Innocence. This will involve making sure that no police are mixed up in drugs either directly or obliquely. Every officer will be required to take a urine test to check for drugs. If they are taking drugs or mixed up in the business then criminal and disciplinary measures will be taken. The public can help with all this by calling 191 or 1599 for which they will receive rewards on conviction of criminals. Damrongsak has recently taken over as chief of the Thai police in the annual reshuffle, notes ASEAN NOW. Last week's shooting and stabbing incident that claimed the lives of two dozen children and 38 people in total comes early on his watch. The incident has heaped attention on the RTP themselves including from international news media. The RTP - known in Thailand as little more than a mafia organization in uniform - has never been under such scrutiny as the fallout from the Nong Bua Lamphu massacre continues. The crime was committed by a former police sergeant who was sacked for being involved in meth. Bastrykin said he had opened a criminal case into an act of terrorism. Bastrykin said Ukrainian special services and citizens of Russia and other countries took part in the act. “We have already established the route of the truck” that Russian authorities have said set off a bomb and explosion on the bridge, he said. Red flags are being flown in Chai Nat province to warn people living along the Chao Phraya River to prepare evacuation, as the water level in the river exceeded the height of its banks by 83cm this morning (Sunday). Overflows from the river have already flooded many areas in Muang, Wat Sing and Manorom districts, which are located upstream of the Chao Phraya Dam. Runoff from the northern region is flowing into the reservoir at a rate of 3,094m3/sec, compared to a discharge rate of 3,058m3/sec through the dam. Irrigation officials said that it is necessary to increase the rate of the discharge to maintain a safe volume of water in the reservoir. Sawang Boriboon rescue services and Pattaya police rushed to a railway near Pattaya City 7 School in the Nongprue subdistrict of Banglamung, Chonburi, after being notified of a fatal road accident at 3 PM Friday, October 7th. Many onlookers were present at the scene where the train Number 284 Phlu Ta Luang-Bangkok was parked. The victim, identified as Mrs. Thongmoh Chanbang, 60, was found dead in the tall grass beside the railway, sustaining multiple severe injuries. Her pink crushed Honda Scoopy motorbike was discovered nearby.
