Picture: Siam Rath Things went well until last night when Saksit's new cab exploded while he was taking a female passenger home from Bang Phai station to the Sucha housing estate in Bang Bua Thong, Nonthaburi. "I quickly told the lady to get out," said Saksit. "And thankfully we were both unhurt. 14. (Left) On Monday, the Secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) confirmed that the deteriorating world economic environment was being monitored by the Ministry of Finance, his agency and the Bank of Thailand. It comes after last week’s warning from the former Minister at the Prime Minister’s Office Dr Kobsak Pootrakool (right) by Joseph O' Connor Plans announced by the Bank of Thailand to issue guidance to financial institutions in the opening quarter of 2023 on reining in excessive consumer lending for foreign holidays and expensive smartphones to tackle Thailand’s ฿15 trillion in household debt, 35% of which is credit card borrowing. A former minister who last week warned Thai economic policy chiefs to prioritise the conservation of the kingdom’s foreign exchange reserves ahead of a deteriorating world economy in 2023 has questioned recent official Thai economic data in relation to export growth and domestic consumption. On Monday, the Secretary-general of the National Economic and Social Development Council (NESDC) Danucha Pichayanan described the prospects for next year as ‘quite worrisome’ but said that Thailand’s key economic agencies were monitoring the situation. Meanwhile, the Bank of Thailand, while maintaining its more dovish monetary policy, thought to be driving funds out of Thailand, has announced plans to issue guidance to financial institutions and lenders in the first quarter of 2023 to rein in consumer borrowing for such things as expensive smartphones and foreign holidays as it underlines the need for action in reducing the country’s level of household debt which was recorded at ฿15 trillion at the end of June this year. 19. Interior ministry and police force declare war on drugs Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - In response to the prime minister ordering a sweeping anti-narcotics effort by all agencies, the interior ministry and the police force have declared a war on drugs. 20. Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - In response to the prime minister ordering a sweeping anti-narcotics effort by all agencies, the interior ministry and the police force have declared a war on drugs. The two organizations have set a target for a list of drug users and sellers nationwide to be produced by October’s end. The information will be used to facilitate narcotics suppression and rehabilitation of users. The interior ministry and the national police held a joint meeting to discuss solving the narcotics problem. Interior Ministry Permanent Secretary Sutthipong Juljarern and Royal Thai Police Commissioner Damrongsak Kittipraphat chaired the meeting. Representatives from the Narcotics Control Board, the Ministry of Public Health, and other public agencies were also in attendance. Talks at the meeting involved the prevention, suppression, and rehabilitation aspects of the fight against narcotics. The interior ministry permanent secretary said an October 31 deadline has bee set for preliminary information on drug users and sellers to be produced. The information will be used among partner agencies, including the police and the military, to tackle the narcotics problem. The relevant agencies will exchange information with one another and also screen information at the local level. Provincial governors and district chiefs will take charge of searches for individuals involved with narcotics. These searches will cover all subdistricts and villages nationwide. According to Mr. Sutthipong, a drug user will have to spend at least one week inside a rehabilitation center. The suppression effort will be conducted alongside the rehabilitation effort, with information on even one pill of an illicit drug to be considered. Local administrative organizations will also be asked to provide material support in the form of equipment to screen for drugs. The permanent secretary said narcotics is a national agenda that necessitated a declaration of a “war on drugs”. All public sector employees are now subject to random screening for drugs. Meanwhile, the national police chief said a large number of drug users have not been entered into rehab. A number of these individuals have gone on to develop mental conditions and have attacked people. He added chiefs of police stations nationwide will be making frequent community visits to nurture relations with locals and foster public confidence in the police. 22. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - The improvement in the pandemic situation is enabling tourism activities and businesses to regain traction. More than 5.6 million foreign tourists have entered Thailand so far this year and generated about 200 billion baht in economic value. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is now making plans to support local tourism development efforts aimed at nurturing sustainable tourism. TAT Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business Apichai Chatchalermkit said tourism has been continually recovering. Aware of this development, Thailand Privilege Card Co., Ltd. is implementing a sustainable tourism tactic under the concept “The Network of Inclusive Growth and Sustainable Society”. Thailand Privilege Card is the firm offering “Thailand Elite” benefits to select foreigners, which include 5 to 20 years visa options. Mr. Apichai explained Thailand Privilege Card will help sustainably develop tourism activities that place importance on the environment, in keeping with the government’s BCG model. Profits from the sale of Thailand Privilege membership will be used in support of tourism and social development. Examples include the “Kla Di” program by Hug Muang Nan Foundation and the mobile medical units sponsorship by Operation Smile Thailand. The former program promotes environmental conscience among young people and the latter provides reconstructive facial surgeries for underprivileged persons. Mr. Apichai said the World Tourism Organization has produced a ranking of tourism recovery among the nations of the world. Thailand currently stands at number 1 in terms of room bookings and number 2 in the aspect of tourist confidence. According to the deputy governor, there are about 20,000 Thailand Privilege Card holders at present. The member body generally consists of foreigners with high spending power and foreign investors. 24. by Namo Vananupong BANGKOK (NNT) - Cabinet meeting endorsed a ministerial regulation specifying the characteristics of 20-baht coins that will commemorate the 29th APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting. No more than one million of the coins will be produced. In addition to serving as memorabilia for APEC events in 2022, the coins will reflect the Thai public’s loyalty to His Majesty the King. The Office of the Council of State will now consider the ministerial regulation before the minister of finance gives his signature. The minting of the coins will then be announced in the Government Gazette, after which the Treasury Department will produce and distribute the coins. Cabinet meeting also endorsed the stance Thailand will be taking at the 6th Singapore-Thailand Enhanced Economic Relationship (STEER) meeting.
