  1. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) will be asked to investigate the conduct of the Election Commission (EC) over its rejection of Srisuwan Janya’s petition, seeking a ruling from the Constitutional Court over the term in office of Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha. Political activist Srisuwan Janya said today (Tuesday) that he does not understand why the EC dragged its feet, taking 15 days to make its decision and only doing so after a similar petition was submitted to House Speaker Chuan Leekpai by the opposition parties. The EC claimed that, since the opposition had submitted a similar petition to the House Speaker, there was no need for it to consider Srisuwan’s. 7. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported that rumors that Thailand's poster boy cop Lt-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakparn was in town led to a whole load of lottery sellers selling tickets at rip-off prices shutting up shop. Ten vendors at a downtown market had closed after the rumors circulated. They had been selling tickets well above the 80 baht face value. Trat's biggest seller said they were not daring to sell tickets for 95 baht. One seller said that Surachate had been busting a Ponzi scheme in Surat Thani, so he couldn't have been in Trat. The police themselves confirmed that the Lt-Gen had not been in town. Only a group of police training school teachers from Region 2 had visited. They would have been told if he'd been visiting. ASEAN NOW notes that the ability for Big Joke to be in two places at once - like particles in quantum physics - is yet to be confirmed as one of his many talents. Though he is known to be able to make lightning visits to bust crime at the drop of a policeman's hat.... -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Siam Rath Siam Rath reported that a contingent of officers from the Economic Crime Division arrested Permsak, 48, on a Nonthaburi court warrant issued in November 2008 on a charge of causing grievous bodily harm. He was arrested in Nong Bua sub-district of Samut Sakhon in central Thailand. Back in 2017 the suspect had a violent argument with another man causing a grievous injury then later attacked him again with a beer bottle after which a report was filed with the Rattanathibet, Nonthaburi police. The arrest was notable because the suspect was arrested just one day before the statute of limitations on the offence ran out. The ECD took him into custody. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. ASEAN NOW caption: Thai red plate parking! Sanook reported on a TikTok post by chakit_j who posted a short video of some appalling parking at a department store lot. The white car had a red plate meaning it was brand new and perhaps indicating that the driver was a novice. The car's rear end was sticking out making it hard for other drivers to get past while the front occupied just part of the allotted space. Netizens commented in droves with many thinking that the new driver had abandoned their car until later having no clue how to extricate it from that position next to a pillar. Others just wondered out loud if the driver had ever passed a Thai driving test. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Picture: Daily News The post appeared to have been made by a person determined to expose teachers having a jolly good time when students get very little, notes ASEAN NOW. The post on a site that translates as "Watchdog Operation" might have been made by a parent. The trip started with a stay in a hotel in Bangkok then a couple of lightning visits to schools in Bang Sue in the Thai capital then one in Phetchabun. Picture: Daily News Then the "staff development" really began with pictures at a beauty spot, chilling at a coffee shop, a visit to a temple to make merit, time in Chiang Khan in Loei to see the "sea of fog" followed by relaxation at a "walking street club" at a resort on the banks of the Mekong. Picture: Daily News Then came a trip to the "sky walk" where the teachers posted that they preferred mountains to beaches anytime. There was till time for some clubbing in Lopburi, a visit to a dam then some more dancing. The first comment summed up the drama. Weerayuth, 26, a Grab rider on the way to see his daughter, was chased by two men on another bike from the Suan Somdej intersection to the end of Soi Tiwanon- Pak Kret 24. The men responsible were Natheethorn, 24, the rider and Nampetch, 19, who was wielding a 30 cm long weapon. Picture: Daily News Weerayuth said that he had been stopped at the lights and thereafter the two men had pulled alongside him and looked at him and he had looked at them thinking he might know them. 23. The Student Loan Fund (SLF) is dismissing calls for it to write off 337 billion baht of loans taken by students to fund their education. Over the past few weeks, thousands of people have been pushing for their student debt to be forgiven. The campaign, run under the hashtag #SLFdebtforgiveness, claims that canceling their debt would combat social inequality and support people’s efforts to improve their lives. However, not everyone is convinced by this argument. “Forgiving loans will not improve people’s access to education,” SLF manager Chainarong Katchapanan said. “On the contrary, it will deprive the younger generation of opportunities that SLF can provide.” Full story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/to-write-off-or-not-to-write-off-two-sides-of-student-loan-repayment-battle/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2022-08-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
