  1. by Ben Blaschke Survey shows more than 80% of Thais in support of legal casinos Industry experts agree that a legalized Thailand casino industry now looks likely to become a reality, but have cast doubts on its ability to implement a regulatory framework strong enough to attract the world’s largest operators. Despite the likes of Las Vegas Sands and MGM Resorts having expressed interest in the Thai market, Spectrum Gaming Group’s Senior VP Asia, Paul Bromberg, said Wednesday that recent attempts to legislate for medical marijuana – which instead wound up legalizing marijuana use nationwide – showed that government lacked the will to do the hard yards when it came to developing an internationally respectable regulatory system. “The simple answer is no,” Bromberg told an audience of industry peers at the G2E Asia: Singapore conference when asked whether the Thai government had the will or ability to put in place the sort of regulatory system required for international investment. 12. Five great Asian dishes you can try across Thailand As expats we are spoilt for choice living in SE Asia. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1269941-five-great-asian-dishes-you-can-try-across-thailand/
  13. As expats we are spoilt for choice living in SE Asia. You can still get your Western style hamburgers or roast beef dinners however Asian food is hard to resist. If you live in one of the major Asian cities like Bangkok, you can try a variety of Asian dishes whether from a street cart or a fancy air-conditioned restaurant. If you are new in the region here are five favorites that you might like to try when ordering your next Asian meal in Thailand. 1. Som Tam — Green Papaya Salad — Thailand Photo: Takeaway, Creative Commons The Thais are dedicated to exploring all the components of flavor in each dish, and they don’t skimp when it comes to their salads. This salad also isn’t your typical lettuce-based “rabbit food” The base of som tam is shredded unripe papaya. Despite this fruity base, the papaya really acts as a stand-in for lettuce — it’s not packing a load of flavor. What is packing in that flavor? The dressing — what else? Fish sauce and shrimp paste are giving you briny savory flavors, chili brings the heat, lime loads up tartness, and a little palm sugar tempers all of it with some sweetness. In Thailand, you can request a spice level that you’re comfortable with, so go big or go home. 2. Chili Crab — Whole Crab in Chili-Tomato Sauce — Singapore Photo: megawatts86, Creative Commons Despite its name, this Singaporean dish isn’t usually packing intense heat. The base of the sauce is tomato and chili, but just how much fire you’ll be getting depends on the restaurant and how you order. No matter where you go, one thing is certain: It’s going to get messy. Chili crab is whole mud crab (read: uncracked) drenched in a tomato-ginger-garlic-chili concoction so generous it’s almost like soup. You’ll reach in, crack your crab, and end up with fingers covered in the stuff. Fortunately, this sauce is so good that it’s served with loads of steamed Chinese buns to soak it all up. Note: It is perfectly acceptable to lick your fingers when the buns run out. 3. Crispy Pata — Deep-Fried Pork Knuckle — The Philippines If there is one Asian country that really knows how to cook a pig, it’s the Philippines. Another characteristic of Filipino food? They waste nothing. Every part of an animal is used, from its innards to its blood — just Google the street food Betamax. Fortunately, crispy pata is one of the more tantalizing variations of this resourcefulness: a deep-fried pork knuckle. It’s buttery goodness and crackly skin is complemented with an uber-Filipino soy-vinegar dip that sends the whole concoction rocketing into the stratosphere of deliciousness. 4. Bahn Mi — Pork and Paté Sandwich — Vietnam This beautiful mashup of French and Vietnamese cuisines results in nothing but wins for your tastebuds. Start with a pillowy, fresh-baked baguette, cut in half. Slather some rich, buttery paté generously on one side of the bread. Pile on plenty of juicy, smoky barbecued pork. Top this with fresh julienned carrots, daikon, cucumber, and cilantro. Then pop on a healthy amount of diced red chilies, sandwich it together, and get ready to get your mind blown. There are several variations of this throughout Vietnam, with chicken, egg, cheese, and more. But sometimes you just can’t beat the original. The best part? They’re cheap as chips — perfect for a budget traveler! 5. Beef Rendang — Caramelized Dry Beef Curry — Indonesia or Malaysia Photo: su-lin, Creative Commons The ingredients list for Rendang is half a mile long, and it shows in the complex all-star Indonesian curry. The inclusion of exotic spices like cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon really bring a new level of depth to Indonesian all-stars like ginger, garlic, chili, and lemongrass. Ever-present coconut milk is generously heaped in with the spice paste. All these flavors are stewed down until they are completely absorbed by the beef – a process that takes hours. After the liquid evaporates, the exterior of the beef is caramelized, bringing the perfect smoky back note to the dish. You will never be happier to be a carnivore than when you take a bite of this one. OK this is just a brief list, and we are sure many of you will wish to add your personal favourite Asian dish too. Enjoy. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 15. Daily News Thai Caption: Arrested in saffron robes! Daily News reported that Satuek police station chief Pol Col Wachirawit Wanthanee sent in subordinate officers after reports that several monks at a temple in Tha Muang sub-district were dealing drugs to youth in the area. Acting suspiciously was 27 year old Phra Rattachai who was found in possession of 129 pills of the amphetamine laced with caffeine. Picture: Daily News Soon also arrested at the temple were Phra Surakrai, 37, and Phra Thapthimsayam, 43. These two both admitted using Ya Ba. Rattachai said the drugs found in his possession were for personal use. Officers dismissed this as Buddhist baloney. All three monks said in unison that the reason they took drugs was because out of nine monks at the temple they were the only ones young enough to do the back breaking work. This included cutting the grass, cutting trees and sweeping up. Picture: Daily News What with all the other duties of a monk how else were they to get through the day without the help of some uppers? So they claimed they bought the drugs for 50 baht a pill using temple donations. All three were defrocked and taken away for prosecution. Satuek district is in Buriram, NE Thailand. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 17. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath went to investigate after a man found an orange "Melo Pearl" in shellfish called "hoi wan". His friends suggested he could be a baht millionaire if he sold it. Sittidech Chaiwan, 26, in Ang Thong sub-district of Phayao said he had bought a whole load of pork and seafood at the market for his wife Katip's birthday "moo katha" dinner on August 11th. Picture: Thai Rath He'd bitten into the shellfish and thought it was a stone at first until he saw the shape and color. Chiang Mai gem testing lab confirmed a week later that it was indeed a melo pearl that was about 2.63 millimeter round and 0.151 of a carat. Picture: Thai Rath He reckoned he had done internet research and melo pearls go for $US6,000 to $US17,000 a carat. ASEAN NOW have had many stories about melo pearls over the years and most are much bigger than this specimen and indeed worth a lot of money. Picture: Thai Rath At a sixth of a carat or thereabouts we suggest that Sittidech might like to lower his assessment of the gem's worth! Anyone interested in buying it can contact him on Facebook on the page "Pound in'Dy". You can bargain the price, said the lucky owner. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. Daily News Thai Caption: Lomsak Pool Villa! A man in the north east of Thailand took to his Facebook page to take several large swipes at authorities in his area who have failed to address constant flooding. It was a beautifully ironic video as Somkeat Kom-aem wallowed in water up to his chest in his front room. He said: "We're now open it's the Lomsak Pool Villa na khrap, the only one of its kind in Phetchaburi. "In 3-4 days we'll have a special promotion - free mud spa treatment. "Don't worry about food we have it all." He produced a fishing rod commenting that if there are no fish not to worry, there are more than enough centipedes and snakes for the discerning diner. "Water? There's plenty of it," he said as he grabbed the filthy brown liquid all around him. "You can filter it yourself". Picture: Daily News He then had a more serious dig at the authorities; it was a post that got much interest from netizens and inspired Daily News to make a visit to the downtown area of Lomsak, NE Thailand. The water had receded and it was now just muddy and dirty and Somkeat, 50, related how it was the same for every year in the 30 years he'd been there. The wealthy could raise their houses, the poor just had to suck it up. He said there was flooding at his house 4-5 times a year and the worst was in the year of the great flood - 2011 - when he was inundated nine times. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 22. Oil Fuel Fund keeps diesel price at 35 baht per liter by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Oil Fuel Fund has decided to maintain the current retail price of diesel at 35 baht per liter, in an attempt to help mitigate the high living cost amidst global oil price fluctuations. 23. by Tanakorn Sangiam BANGKOK (NNT) - Thailand’s Oil Fuel Fund has decided to maintain the current retail price of diesel at 35 baht per liter, in an attempt to help mitigate the high living cost amidst global oil price fluctuations. According to Oil Fuel Fund Office (OFFO) director Wisak Watanasap, the global diesel price on 22 August was 137.52 U.S. dollars per barrel, which was 6.56 dollars higher than that of the previous week at 130.96 dollars. This price increase is driven by the increasing petroleum demand in the United States, as its economy shows recovery; coupled with the European Union’s ban on Russian oil. The Thai government is now providing a partial subsidy for diesel prices exceeding the 35 baht per liter ceiling, to which the government covers 50% of the excessive amount. This measure has been in effect since July, and will continue through September this year. OFFO’s financial balance as of 21 August was at negative 118.01 billion baht - 76.74 billion baht in red for the oil fund and 41.27 billion baht in red for the LPG fund. 24. Thai teen with HIV needs help to get to uni: Despite constant bullying and stigma Nong Jaa fights on Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on the case of a 17 year old Thai schoolgirl in Chainat in central Thailand who has had HIV since she was in her mother's womb. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1269926-thai-teen-with-hiv-needs-help-to-get-to-uni-despite-constant-bullying-and-stigma-nong-jaa-fights-on/
  25. Picture: Thai Rath Thai Rath reported on the case of a 17 year old Thai schoolgirl in Chainat in central Thailand who has had HIV since she was in her mother's womb. Now despite constant bullying and stigma about the disease she is on the verge of fulfilling a dream and getting to university. But she needs money to do so. ASEAN NOW is hoping our readers can help Natchaneecha Tumhorm who is known by her nickname of Jaa. Jaa's life has been one of struggle from the moment she was born. Her mother died and her father was sent to prison. She lives with her 79 year old paternal grandfather called Rin who earns a meager income of 1,000 baht spraying rice. What with 500 baht in benefits for Jaa and 1,000 baht in elderly benefits for Rin their total income is less than 3,000 baht a month. She is a conscientious student who works hard at school where she receives a free Thai government education. But she wants to go to university so that she can get a good job and help her grandfather in his very old age. Jaa explained about people living with HIV and how people contract the disease. She said she had no choice in the matter being infected by her mother in the womb. Other ways are through unprotected sex with an infected person, sharing needles, blood transfusions from infected sources and babies taking mother's milk, she explained. She said she also has asthma and had a particularly bad episode a few years ago when she had a seizure. Thai Rath did not report on her anti-viral HIV regimen though a visit from local officials yesterday showed meds that are used to suppress the virus. Thanks to medicine widely available in Thailand, most HIV-ers these days can live relatively normal lives, as long as anyone else, providing they know about their condition and take medication daily. In Thailand this is provided free of charge. Jaa asked for people to look at HIV-ers in a new way and stop the stigma. This caused bullying for her at school since she was very little and though she has got used to it now she is older she wants that to stop. Yesterday Yuthana Raekkheun, Sankhaburi, Chainat district chief and the director of her school - Phadej Suphanthana of Khuruprachasan school - and other officials took rice and a bursary as an initial help. Thai Rath didn't explain why this was happening now. The help is appreciated but she needs more for that uni dream and a brighter future. Money can be transferred to an account in her name at the Government Savings Bank #020181166842. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-08-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
