Thailand’s best-known Muay Thai boxer, Buakaw Banchamek, was defeated by Bulgarian Stoyan Koprivlenski in a three-round bout at the K-1 World MAX Championship, held in the Yoyoi 2nd gymnasium in Tokyo on Sunday night. Last night’s fight was Buakaw’s attempt, at the age of 42, to return to K-1 World MAX, in the under 70kg weight category, since he won the championship in 2004 and 2006. Last night’s bout was in the first round of the eight fighters’ marathon tournament. The winners of the first round proceed to the semi-final, after which the two finalists meet to decide the championship. The rules forbid the use of elbow and knee jabs while pulling the body of the opponent. During the second round, Buakaw took a kick to his chin, forcing him to pause momentarily. This prompted the referee to give an eight count. Full story: Thai PBS 2024-07-09 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Police are searching for a Chinese couple after they were caught having sex in public in a university car park in the city centre of the northern province of Chiang Mai. Photos of the naked Chinese couple were shared in a local Facebook group in Chiang Mai yesterday, July 7. The photos showed two Thai police officers intervening in the foreign couple’s sexual activity. Officers reportedly asked them to put on their clothes and then took them to the hospital on Thursday, July 4. A female vendor selling food near the scene gave an interview to Channel 7 about the incident, stating that it took place at about 5pm. The couple ordered food from her restaurant and ate together under a tree in the car park. The vendor said she did not know what had happened but the Chinese woman began to take off the man’s clothes, leaving only his shorts. Then, she asked the Chinese man to lie on the ground before climbing on top of him. People and motorists were shocked by their actions and called the police to the scene. The Investigative Inspector of the Tourist Police Sub-Division 2, Police Lieutenant Colonel Awirut Sookyam, told the media that the Chinese couple confessed to using cannabis before drinking beer together. Police suspected that the combination of alcohol and ganja affected them. According to Awirut, the two were admitted to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. They have since left the hospital but have not yet returned to their home country. Officers are searching for the couple for further legal proceedings regarding their explicit acts. The university boarding management team did not take any legal action against the Chinese couple but police officers are determined to legally punish them for public obscenity. In a similar incident, a Thai homeless couple was arrested for public sex in the Isaan province of Khon Kaen in May. The homeless man admitted to the act and emphasised that being homeless, he had no choice but to have sex in public. Another foreign couple was charged with engaging in sexual activity in the sea at Patong Beach in Phuket in April. No legal charges were issued against them or other foreign couples involved in previous incidents in Phuket. by Petch Petpailin Photo via Facebook/ เชียงมั๊ย เชียงใหม่ Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

A Thai student has gained international recognition by winning a design competition for the Red Bull Racing Formula One car to be used in the British Grand Prix. The Public Relations Department Region 3 in Chiang Mai posted on Facebook celebrating the achievement of Chonlath Suwannik, a 16 year old student from The Prince Royal’s College in Chiang Mai. Chonlath, a Year 11 student, designed a special livery called “Stallion Red,” which will be featured on the Red Bull Racing car at the British Grand Prix in England. Chonlath shared that his inspiration came from the Flow-Vis paint used to test aerodynamics. “I used red in the car’s design to represent the spirit and strength embodied in the Red Bull logo. The Flow-Vis paint inspired me because of its application in aerodynamic testing.” On July 3, the @redbulletin account on platform X unveiled the special livery that will be used in the British Grand Prix as part of the REBL CUSTMS project for 2024. The young designer’s achievement has been widely celebrated, with many praising his creativity and talent. The design competition is part of Red Bull Racing’s initiative to engage with young talents and allow them to showcase their skills on a global platform. Winning such a prestigious competition at a young age is a significant milestone for Chonlath and highlights the potential of young Thai talents in the global arena. Picture of Chonlath Suwannik’s design courtesy of Sanook The Flow-Vis paint, which inspired Chonlath’s design, is commonly used in F1 to visualize airflow over various parts of the car. This paint allows engineers to analyze how air moves over the vehicle, helping them optimize the car’s aerodynamic performance. By incorporating this element into his design, Chonlath has demonstrated a deep understanding of the technical aspects of F1 racing, which undoubtedly contributed to his success in the competition. “The Flow-Vis paint’s role in aerodynamic testing fascinated me, and I wanted to incorporate that element into my design to highlight the technical precision of the Red Bull Racing team.” This win not only brings pride to Chonlath and his school but also brings attention to the potential and creativity of Thai students on the international stage. It serves as an inspiration for other young designers and students who aspire to make their mark in fields traditionally dominated by professionals with more experience. Red Bull Racing’s REBL CUSTMS project aims to foster innovation and creativity among the younger generation, and Chonlath’s success is a testament to the project’s impact. By providing a platform for young designers to present their work, the initiative helps bridge the gap between aspiring artists and the professional world. As the British Grand Prix approaches, anticipation builds to see Chonlath’s design in action on the race track. This collaboration between a young Thai student and a world-renowned F1 team is a remarkable story of talent, creativity, and opportunity, showcasing how the world of motorsport can inspire and elevate young minds globally. by Bob Scott Picture of Chonlath Suwannik courtesy of Sanook Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

The Finance Ministry is poised to introduce measures to support businesses impacted by the recent increase in the minimum wage. The ministry confirmed that the wage hike must be paired with tax measures to lessen the burden on businesses, following precedents set by past wage increases. Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat stated that the goal of the minimum wage increase is to reduce social inequality and strengthen societal foundations, ensuring steady economic progress. However, he acknowledged that implementing a wage hike affects the private sector, necessitating government intervention to mitigate the impact. In 2018, the minimum wage was raised after the 19th Wage Committee Meeting, resulting in an average increase of 15.97 baht across seven levels: 308, 310, 315, 318, 320, 325, and 330 baht. The lowest wage was set at 308 baht per day in the three southernmost border provinces, while the highest wage reached 330 baht per day in Phuket, Chon Buri, and Rayong. In Bangkok and its surrounding areas, the wage was set at 325 baht per day. Former Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s administration introduced tax measures in 2018 to ease the impact of the minimum wage increase. These measures allowed companies or legal partnerships with total revenue from sales and services not exceeding 100 million baht and employing no more than 200 workers to deduct daily wage expenses paid to employees at 1.15 times the actual daily wage amount. The Pheu Thai Party, leading the coalition government, announced plans to gradually increase the minimum wage to 600 baht per day by 2027. The initial target is to raise the wage to 400 baht per day by October 1 this year, reported Bangkok Post. In other news, the Finance Ministry appears unlikely to extend the jet fuel excise tax reduction, which was initially introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic, stated Deputy Finance Minister Julapun Amornvivat. Julapun addressed a recent proposal by a group of budget airlines seeking further reductions in the jet fuel excise tax. He remarked that such requests are not of immediate importance. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of Solidarity Center Source: The Thaiger 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

In a recent clarification, the Thai Navy has refuted circulating rumors about a change in the delivery of a new submarine from China to Indonesia, confirming the vessel is still destined for Thailand. Assistant Navy Chief Adm Chonlathit Navanukroh spoke to press this weekend, ensuring the S26T Yuan-class submarine under construction by China’s Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. (CSOC) remains on course for delivery to Thailand. The discussions surfaced amid online speculation suggesting a potential diversion of the delivery to Indonesia. However, Adm Chonlathit emphasized that no such change was contemplated by China, and the original deal with Thailand stands firm. One significant shift in the deal, however, involves the submarine's engine. Originally slated to include a German-made MTU396 engine, due to trade embargoes imposed by Germany and the EU against China, the submarine will now be fitted with a Chinese-made CHD620 engine. Despite concerns, this engine has been inspected and evaluated by Thai navy officials, who are satisfied with its performance metrics, comparing favorably to the initial German engine. The ongoing construction of the submarine stands at 64% completion, with expectations to finalize and ferry the submarine to Sattahip Naval Base by early 2028, factoring in a 1,217-day extension to the original timeline. The cost of the submarine remains at a steep 12.4 billion baht, a figure that has stirred some debate within Thai governmental circles. Adm Chonlathit is optimistic that the current Pheu Thai-led government will soon approve extended schedules for both construction and delivery, along with the engine overhaul. This assurance, however, is met with cautious observation from Navy Chief Adm Adung Pan-iam, who anticipates potential delays or challenges in receiving final approvals from the government, commenting on the precarious timing with his impending retirement at the end of September. The agreement continues to hold as a testament to the ongoing defense collaborations between China and Thailand, rowing against the undercurrent of online rumors and speculations. Severe Weather Alert: Heavy Rain to Strike 45 Thai Provinces
webfact posted a topic in Thailand News
The Meteorological Department of Thailand (TMD) has issued a severe weather warning for an approaching storm that is set to bring thunderstorms and heavy rain across 45 provinces, including Bangkok. The forecast anticipates significant rainfall, potentially leading to disruptions and flooding in affected areas. The TMD highlighted that a strong southwest monsoon is now active over the Andaman Sea, the entirety of Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. This robust weather pattern is expected to result in marked thunderstorms and intense rain spanning multiple parts of the country, which might extend from today into the coming days. In response, the TMD has urged residents in the forecasted areas to brace themselves for possible emergency situations such as flash floods and landslides. They have especially warned small boats to refrain from going to sea during the storm, as the conditions are predicted to heighten sea turbulence significantly. Key affected regions include the northern provinces of Mae Hong Son, Phrae, and Nan, which may see up to 70% of their area experiencing thunderstorms and heavy rains. Likewise, the northeastern parts like Loei and Nong Bua Lamphu, and the central provinces such as Uthai Thani and Kanchanaburi, are also expected to face similar weather conditions. Bangkok and its surrounding vicinities are particularly warned of heavy rains that could significantly affect daily activities and cause travel disruptions. Temperatures might fluctuate between 24°C during the dawn and escalate to around 35°C as the day progresses. Citizens are advised to stay up-to-date with the latest weather reports and follow local authority directives to safeguard against the potential adversities caused by this severe weather condition. Thailand to reclassify cannabis as Illegal by 1 January, 2025 Picture courtesy: Facebook เขียนอนาคตกัญชาไทย In an unexpected pivot, Thailand's Ministry of Public Health has announced plans to reclassify cannabis and hemp as illegal narcotics starting January 1, 2025. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1331767-thailand-to-reclassify-cannabis-as-illegal-by-1-january-2025/

In an unexpected pivot, Thailand's Ministry of Public Health has announced plans to reclassify cannabis and hemp as illegal narcotics starting January 1, 2025. The move will see cannabis flowers and extracts containing more than 0.2% THC being categorised alongside other banned drugs, while branches, stems, roots, leaves, and seeds will remain exempt from this classification. This decision marks a significant reversal from the country's earlier stance that saw a push towards decriminalization and controlled use, particularly for medical and research purposes. Dr. Surachoke Tangwiwat from the ministry pointed out the intention to curb recreational use, which has been a growing concern among health officials and the general public. The draft regulation, which has garnered approval from a majority at the recent Narcotics Control Board meeting, will now be forwarded to Health Minister Somsak Thepsuthin, before being presented to the Cabinet for final endorsement. Opponents of the move, such as the Shaping the Future of Thai Cannabis network, voiced their dissatisfaction, claiming the change favours corporate interests over the public good. The network, led by activist Prasitchai Nunual, has called for public demonstrations to protest the reclassification. They have scheduled a gathering on July 8 outside Government House, urging supporters to voice their dissent in what they describe as "a final fight" to keep cannabis accessible to the populace. Despite these controversies, proponents of the bill argue that the reclassification is necessary to prevent misuse and protect public health, ensuring that the plant's benefits are utilized responsibly and safely. As the debate continues, the coming months are set to be critical in shaping the future of cannabis regulation in Thailand. Picture courtesy: Facebook Phuket Intl. Airport In an ambitious stride toward redefining Thailand's airspace, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has pledged to overhaul the nation’s airports, aiming to meet global standards and establish Thailand as a top regional aviation hub. The plan, spearheaded by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Transport Suriya Juangroongruangkit, targets enhancements in aviation safety, customer service, and operational efficacy. The upgrade is not just about refurbishment but a strategic move to improve Thailand's aviation credentials on the world stage. The government has pinpointed several critical areas for development, with a key focus on meeting the rigorous standards set by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) of the United States. This adjustment is pivotal for expanding Thailand’s flight connectivity to the U.S. and potentially other international destinations. Core improvements will be seen at Bangkok's two main airports—Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang. Suvarnabhumi Airport, already a focal point of Thailand's air traffic, is set to expand its passenger accommodation space by adding 81,000 square meters and a third runway by September 2024, which is expected to boost its capacity from 68 to 94 flights per hour. In terms of global rankings, efforts seem to be paying off as Suvarnabhumi leapt 10 places up, securing a spot in the top 58 global airports for 2024. On the other hand, Don Mueang continues to excel as one of the world’s leading low-cost airline terminals. The overarching goal for the Thai aviation sector is to feature among the top 20 global airports by 2029, with the ability to handle around 170 million passengers and 1 million flights annually. By 2034, these figures are expected to soar even higher to 210 million passengers and 1.2 million flights. These efforts are part of Thailand's broader economic vision to leverage its geographic location and available resources to become a leader in the aviation sector, enhancing overall connectivity and boosting tourism and trade. -- 2024-07-08 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

200 Senators Poised for Ratification Within a Week Picture courtesy: Thai Rath In an important announcement today, former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn revealed that the ratification of all 200 senators-designate is expected within the next week. In an important announcement today, former election commissioner Somchai Srisutthiyakorn revealed that the ratification of all 200 senators-designate is expected within the next week. This statement came amidst delays attributed to numerous formal electoral complaints about potential irregularities, which has prompted a careful review by the Election Commission. Somchai expressed urgency in completing the ratification process and emphasized the constitutional requirement for senators to maintain neutrality, free from political affiliations. However, he voiced concerns regarding the independence of the elected senators, hinting at undisclosed meetings that suggest possible alliances with political parties. The ratification delay, initially put off last Wednesday, was mainly to allow time for these allegations to be evaluated. Now, with a promised timeframe for resolution, the focus shifts to how these representatives will uphold their mandate to act impartially amidst the swirling rumours of political engagements.
