High Speed Rail coming to Thailand but critics cite Low Speed decision making Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded reported on the latest developments in the building of Thailand's High Speed Train network that will link the country by rail to China via Laos. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1266762-high-speed-rail-coming-to-thailand-but-critics-cite-low-speed-decision-making/ -
Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded reported on the latest developments in the building of Thailand's High Speed Train network that will link the country by rail to China via Laos. The Department of Rail Transport has put some dates out when the public can be expected to use the various lines. There is some delay yet as critics see how Laos and China did it in tandem but how the Thais are struggling to meet deadlines. Picture: 77kaoded The joint collaboration that was the Laos-China connection to Vientiane was completed in double quick time and is operational. The Thai section from Nong Khai to Bangkok has met delay after delay especially over land acquisition disputes and contractual issues. Picture: 77kaoded Pre-pandemic in 2019 the transport minister Saksayam Chidchob put his full weight behind the High Speed plans, despite the fact it's all a different guage and style to the already completed tracks across the border. The DRT said that the Laos-China train had investment of 30% from Laos and 70% from China. There was far more input from Chinese tech angles. The Thai project that has racked up 179 billion baht in spending so far is all Thai investment. China is helping out with some technical issues but mostly it is Thailand's baby, with the aim to increase the ability of local organisations and firms in handling a modern rail network. Picture: 77kaoded The department went further in claiming that the Thai side of the railway will go faster than the Laos side and is much cheaper to build per kilometer. They said the Thai side would cost 358 million/km and the Laos side was 480 m/km. So what are the latest dates for opening of the High Speed 250 kmph rail in Thailand? For the Bangkok to Nakhon Ratchasima or Korat stretch currently under construction it is scheduled to open to the public in 2026. The Korat to Nong Khai section won't be open until at least 2028. Picture: 77kaoded Many matters concerning how the Thai and Laotian lines meet have yet to be ironed out despite many high level meetings. It all means that border transfers will be a feature of the line rather than any seamless transition from one country to the next. That may disappoint some purists of train travel. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 77kaoded Thai Caption: Shut up and all quiet, not yet open for business 77kaoded reported from Samut Prakan that the once popular Crocodile Farm and Zoo in the area remained shut as it has been for two years of the pandemic. An official vets' task force was sent to the facility after a person called Chayanan complained about cruelty to elephants being kept at the zoo while it's shut. He described what he called "horrendous cruelty" as elephants were chained up all day long developing wounds on their legs. Picture: 77kaoded He called it the most serious case of animal abuse in Thailand. But the vets who went to investigate found that simply changing the chains relieved any problems. The elephants were in good mental shape too, was their assessment that largely dismissed Chaiyanan's claims as unsubstantiated. Picture: 77kaoded 77kaoded said they had tried and failed to contact the farm and zoo owner Uthen Yanpraphakorn without success. The facility was shut and he wasn't picking up. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Daily News Thai Caption: Let's get ripped! Some before and after pictures are wowing the Thai social media scene, reported Daily News. And suggesting that we might head for the gym rather than fatty food. They show a slimming page on Facebook that is "All About Beauties." In the first picture the five gents and two ladies are...er....carrying a bit of excess baggage. But after some workouts - it was not specified how long and over what time frame - they are all sporting abbs aplenty and muscles where they previously didn't know they had muscles. The post said: "Whether you're fat or slim depends on whether your friends take you to the gym or the moo katha (pork BBQ)". The internet was suitably wowed with posters commenting on the discipline of the slimmers and making a mental note to do something about their own paunches. Right after having something to eat, that is. Moo katha or dumbbell's ASEAN NOW asks. Paying to see the rock stars in Thailand could be risky OPINION | by Michael Bridge file photo As major tours begin rolling out across the world again, many are worried it maybe too soon and that the ongoing Covid-19 breakouts could force shows or even entire tours to be postponed or canceled. file photo OPINION | by Michael Bridge As major tours begin rolling out across the world again, many are worried it maybe too soon and that the ongoing Covid-19 breakouts could force shows or even entire tours to be postponed or canceled. Already the likes of Maroon 5, Justin Bieber, Guns N Roses and Billie Ellish are due in Bangkok in 2022 at the National Stadium or Impact Arena. Tours now are big business for these bands, who make more money touring than selling records these days. Maroon 5 are charging up to THB12,000 a ticket to stand in a football stadium, which is known for its dreadful transport links. But still, people are willing to pay that much to see their heroes. Older Rock Stars Now although the above-mentioned concerts in Thailand are being performed by relatively young performers, another reason shows are canceled is because of the artist’s health. Guns N' Roses who are due to play in both Bangkok and Singapore in November, recently had to postpone their Glasgow show due to "illness and medical advice". The band – with icons Axl Rose, Slash and Duff McKagan, return to Asia for a couple a one-night-only concerts in stadiums. They will also head to Japan for shows in November ahead of their Singapore concert and then onto Australia. Quite a heavy schedule for these old rockers. Meanwhile, Carlos Santana, the virtuoso guitarist who turned 75 years old this month, had to postpone his next six shows in the States to recover after collapsing on stage earlier this month. “Doctors have recommended that Mr. Santana gets rest to recuperate fully.” But money talks and many legends are putting away their rocking chairs and zimmer frames to go out on the road to entertain us. It seems that there is a huge appetite to see these legends who are not only attracting their older fans but a whole new generation as well. Who wouldn’t want to get up to Bangkok to see the Rolling Stones before they eventually stop touring? Some think it is a miracle Keith Richards can actually still play a full set!!! Same for the Who, Bruce Springsteen, Queen, and Sir Paul McCartney, all who can sell out in minutes wherever they go. However, as you pay for your tickets, sometimes up to months in advance, just remember to check with their doctors to see if they will allow them to fly to SE Asia. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. file photo for reference only By Thai Newsroom Reporters PRIME MINISTER PRAYUT Chan-o-cha was today (July 22) held accountable for a “foolish waste” of the taxpayer’s money amounting to 21 billion baht involving the navy’s planned purchase of a Chinese-built submarine without engine. During the last day of a four-day censure debate, Pheu Thai MP Yutthapong Charatsathian alleged that Prayut who concurrently acts as defence minister had failed to save as much as 21.7 billion baht in down payment which the navy had already paid to China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co. for its Yuan-class S26T submarine. Yutthapong commented that the enormous loss had practically resulted from the “foolishly wasteful” deal which included a 12.4 billion baht price of its first Chinese boat whilst the people’s economic woes have not yet been solved by the Prayut government. Possible crisis brewing over electoral reform bills as Minister says July 6th change cannot work by Joseph O' Connor Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul responded on Thursday to questions about the voting process for the next General Election raised by Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsutin (inset) who says the change to the proposed bills made on July 6th in a surprise move in parliament is not viable. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Public Health Anutin Charnvirakul responded on Thursday to questions about the voting process for the next General Election raised by Minister of Justice Somsak Thepsutin (inset) who says the change to the proposed bills made on July 6th in a surprise move in parliament is not viable. by Joseph O' Connor On Thursday, in response to Minister Somsak’s warning about the viability of electoral reforms being put into practice, the Bhumjaithai Party leader Anutin Charnvirakul did not dismiss the concerns raised but suggested that he would win his seat as a constituency MP and that his party would work with whatever electoral system is being used. Mr Somsak had said that Mr Anutin’s party may be critical in finding a resolution to the present conundrum which has the potential to derail forthcoming elections if not clarified. As the Thai government enters into its final months in office with an election due to be called in the next 6 months in any event, the basis for calculating the result of that poll has been thrown into doubt as electoral reform bills have yet to be finalised and enacted by parliament. It is a situation that could lead to a constitutional crisis. On Thursday, a senior cabinet minister raised questions about the vote in parliament on July 6th to change the formula for the allocation of party list seats in the forthcoming General Election. Minister of Justice, Somsak Thepsutin, said that the only solution may be to revert to the original proposal as agreed before the surprise vote and use a forum based on the number of party-list seats at 100 or to scrap the electoral reform process altogether.
