  6. By Thai PBS World’s Political Desk A bribery scandal involving Thailand’s national airline and British jet engine manufacturer Rolls-Royce is back in the media spotlight after the Thai anti-graft agency concluded that their engine procurement deal three decades ago was “unlawful”. The National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) found that two top executives of Thai Airways International (THAI) at that time violated a 1959 law against corruption in state organizations and agencies when the national flag carrier purchased Rolls-Royce engines in a deal worth well over 14 billion baht. The NACC on July 18 resolved to indict former finance minister Thanong Bidaya, who oversaw the deal as THAI board chairman, and Kaweepan Ruengpaka, who was the airline’s vice president for finances at the time. They are among 11 former senior officials of the airline investigated in connection with the bribery scandal. Only Thanong and Kaweepan are facing legal action, while the others have been subject to disciplinary action or seen their charges dropped. One of the accused has passed away. 8. By Thai PBS World’s Regional Desk The US State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP) has been as much a statement of Thailand’s efforts to combat modern slavery as it has been a testament of the country’s relations with Washington. This year, the TIP report elevated Thailand to Tier 2 from Tier 2 Watchlist last year, recognizing the Thai government’s increasing efforts to combat human trafficking over the past year. The efforts included the increasing number of trafficking investigations, finalizing a national referral mechanism, finalizing the implementation of guidelines on forced labor in the human trafficking law, and initiating investigations into 17 alleged complicit officials last year, according to the report. Aroon Laiphongpaew, parliament’s security chief, was alerted yesterday (Friday) by Watchara Petthong and Somboon Thongburan, two former Democrat MPs, about the presence of the plants, in pots or planted in the ground around several big trees in the front courtyard of parliament. The plants were neatly arranged in a circle around each of the trees. 15. file photo ANALYSIS | by Michael Bridge With the current soaring fuel costs coupled with chaotic airports, maybe it is worth looking at the region’s trains as an alternative means of getting around. OK, it may take longer but it will be more of an adventure and will most likely save you a lot of cash too. Thailand has been taking delivery of new rolling stock and has been upgrading its rail systems and train travel is an effective way of getting around. With new equipment, it's comfortable, safe, cheap, environmentally friendly, and unlike flying it's a genuine Thai experience. The train is the best way from Bangkok to Chiang Mai and train+ferry or train+bus is the best way from Bangkok to Ko Samui, Phuket , or Krabi. International travel You can now also travel internationally from Bangkok-Vientiane, Bangkok-Cambodia or Bangkok-Penang-Kuala Lumpur-Singapore by train, too. The only direct train service from Bangkok to Singapore is the Eastern & Oriental Express which is a fantastic service but awfully expensive and the trains run infrequently. Single fares are around US$6,000. The 1,233-mile journey to Singapore takes 48 hours using regular Thai and Malaysian train services, and costs around $80/£55 including a sleeper. To travel by rail from Bangkok to Singapore using regular services then you need to catch five different trains. It is possible to buy tickets online and the best website to use is www.seat61.com https://www.seat61.com/Malaysia.htm#Padang_Besar_station_information Here you can see videos of the carriages, the sleeper beds and all the timetables. A few years ago, I travelled back to Bangkok from Butterworth after getting a visa in Penang. I took the sleeper, and the carriages were excellent. You can also take the Johor Bahru-Gua Musang-Tumpat overnight train which also has modern 2nd class sleepers, marketed as Standard Night. However, if you don’t wish to spend a couple of days watching the countryside go by on the trains, then you can head to the queues at the airports. At today’s rates a return flight from Bangkok to Singapore will set you back approx. THB10,500. That flight leaves at 17.45hrs and returns at 10.45hrs so you don’t get much time there. You could save THB3,000 if you are prepared to depart at 07.00 but you would fly via Phuket on the way to Singapore arriving at 12.45hrs and your return also departs at 07.00hrs via a stop in KL. Doesn’t sound very relaxing to me So going to Singapore from Bangkok by train with a return ticket is THB6,630 cheaper. And remember you sleep one or even two nights night on the train and not in an expensive Singapore hotel. Important COVID-19 update: Trains are running within both Malaysia & Thailand. Cross-border trains between Padang Besar & Hat Yai have been suspended but resume as from 15 July 2022. The Padang Besar-Bangkok International Express may also resume shortly, to be confirmed. JB Sentral-Woodland’s cross-border shuttle was suspended but resumed 19 June 2022. Due to electrification work trains to/from JB Sentral were temporarily suspended but resumed from 19 June 2022. Masks must be worn. Restrictions may apply on foreigners entering Malaysia. Restrictions may apply to crossing the Thai/Malay and Singapore/Malay border, please check. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-25 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. by Lubomir Tassev The company that owns Thailand’s Siam Commercial Bank has postponed a deal to acquire a majority stake in Bitkub, the country’s largest cryptocurrency exchange. The decision comes amid tightening crypto regulations that limit growth in domestic crypto trading. SCB Postpones Acquisition of Thai Crypto Exchange Bitkub The parent company of Siam Commercial Bank, SCB X, has delayed a 17.85-billion-baht ($487 million) bid to acquire 51% of the largest crypto exchange in Thailand, Bitkub. The bank, which is the kingdom’s oldest lender, postponed the deal indefinitely as Thai regulations continue to inhibit growth of crypto trading, Nikkei Asia reported, quoting the financial group. “We have made it clear in our statement to the Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) that the deal is still undergoing due diligence,” an unnamed senior official at the SCB X has been quoted as stating. “We don’t know when the deal will be sealed,” he added. Earlier in July, the company notified the SET that the matter is still being discussed with regulatory bodies and that its completion period had been extended.
