  5. Entertainment Complexes Recommended To Allow Legal Casinos By Editor A panel of lawmakers submitted a report on Wednesday to Parliament, recommending the government issue a decree allowing “entertainment complexes” that include legal casinos to be built in key cities across the country. 6. By Editor A panel of lawmakers submitted a report on Wednesday to Parliament, recommending the government issue a decree allowing “entertainment complexes” that include legal casinos to be built in key cities across the country. “We’re focused on attracting foreigners to step up tourism and draw more money out of their pockets,” said Pichet Chuamuangphan, a lawmaker from the Pheu Thai Party, who is a vice chairman of the panel. “This will also stem the outflow of money from Thai gamblers and help the government collect hefty taxes for our economic security.” Greater Bangkok would be ideal for the initial casino, followed by facilities in seaside southern provinces such as Phuket, Krabi or Phang Nga, Pichet said. His reported comments made no mention of possible locations in either Phetchaburi or Prachuap Khiri Khan provinces, however it is hoped that a visit to Hua Hin by committee member Dr Saernsak Siriphanich on Friday (29th July) may shed some light on that tourism prospect. The proposal comes as Thailand seeks to revive the all-important tourism industry, a key to rebooting the economy. The blueprint, if adopted, could help the country generate billions of dollars from foreign investors, travellers and Thai gamblers — who would otherwise spend gaming money in neighbouring countries, according to the panel. At least 400 billion baht in additional tax revenue would be collected annually once several facilities are operating, he said. The panel’s recommendations are built upon Thailand’s Gambling Act of 1935, which prohibits most types of betting but contains a provision that gives the government powers to issue decrees or licences that green-light certain gaming activities and venues. Public-private partnerships with domestic or foreign companies could be set up or the operating licences may be issued directly to private firms. Either way, complexes must include facilities such as hotels, amusement parks and retail outlets, Mr Pichet said. Providing multiple activities will avoid the creation of gambling dens and broaden the appeal of the tourism industry, he said. Thais who are at least 20 and have a minimum 500,000 baht in bank accounts would be allowed to gamble, according to the proposal, which stipulates a minimum 30% tax on casino operators’ revenue. With the blueprint’s submission Wednesday, lawmakers will next deliberate on whether to act on the recommendations, which could be concluded before a parliamentary recess in September, Mr Pichet said. 8. Blueberry. Blueberry background photo created by dashu83 – www.freepik.com by Gregers Møller Record number of Thai berry pickers are once again expected in Finland this summer, reports YLE.fi Two years ago, a new law was passed protecting the berry pickers and this seems to work in providing confidence for the Thais to apply for the jobs. This year, Thai authorities have allowed more than 4,000 berry pickers to work in Finland, which is 500 more than in previous years, the report says. On the Finnish side, the North Ostrobothnia TE employment office coordinates the arrival of the berry pickers. Among the large berry firms, Polarica Berries and Fruits will bring 1100 berry pickers to Finland, and Marja Bothnia Berries will welcome 900 migrant workers. 9. To sell or not to sell, that is the question for Thai Expats OPINION | by Michael Bridge file photo Gone were the heady days when one could arrive at Dom Muang airport and get THB75 to the pound and feel like a millionaire. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1267348-to-sell-or-not-to-sell-that-is-the-question-for-thai-expats/
  10. file photo OPINION | by Michael Bridge Gone were the heady days when one could arrive at Don Muang airport and get THB75 to the pound and feel like a millionaire. In fact, in the late 1990s, one pound actually reached THB92 for a brief period. Oh happy days. The pound's recent lowest point was THB 36.6 in August 2019, and we know how miserable that felt. Currently, the pound was worthTHB44.6 on July 28th certainly going up since THB42.07 was recorded in June. Those getting funds from the States have seen the dollar climb from THB32.11 on February 18th to THB36.67 on July 28th, 2022. So many of us are at least getting more Baht for our bucks or quids at the moment. Trying to understand why is a tricky business for sure. One would have thought that with Thailand’s travel industry demise, rising inflation, and uncertainty within the government, that the baht would be even weaker. Hedging ones bet OK when things get tougher in the old day’s people would hedge their bets by buying gold, however that has not been the case this past six months. Back on January 27, 2022, a gram of gold was going for $57.84 and on July 26th it was down to $55.23 a gram. Even when Russia invaded Ukraine back in March gold only went up to $66.42 a gram for a short spell. Meanwhile those clever investors who sold their bitcoins some time ago made a pretty penny or ten thousand, I am sure. However how many have now been caught with expensive real estate investments based on a buoyant crypto market, only to wake up to a huge mortgage and little in crypto value to support it left. Seems the Dollar is offering a safer route at the moment, as in uncertain periods such as we are experiencing today, people have tended to support the world’s largest economy. If you are lucky to still have a bundle of pounds or a wad of dollars, should you hold onto them or go to a reliable currency exchange and buy Thai Baht? Who knows? With the world’s economy in trouble and the cost of living rising will that mean the promised high season in Thailand is unlikely to materialize. If China which has its own issues with a slow economy and coping with the Pandemic affecting its output, then decides to slow down on importing Thai goods and it stops investing in High-speed railway projects here, that will certainly hurt the economy. Meanwhile, they may have gotten rid of Boris but is the possible new Prime Minister, the current Foreign Secretary Liz Truss, going to lift the UK economy with her planned tax cutting programmes? OAP Biden seems to blunder from one crisis to another without really achieving much. Trump is breathing down his neck as well and is waiting to return in triumph. And do we really want a mogul who does not pay his taxes back in the headmaster’s seat again? I suppose the future is so uncertain that it may be better to take up playing golf and then join the LIV Golf tour and get some serious cash. Good luck. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. Daily News Thai Caption: Who was in the wrong! Daily News posed the question as to who was in the wrong after a pizza delivery went pear shaped. Pitchaya went on Facebook to leave a bad review after she ordered four large pizzas and gave her address. The call center confirmed the order and online payment. But after one hour the food had not arrived. When she checked her phone there was a message from the rider. He said that he had been unable to contact her and so he had eaten the pizzas and handed them out to people in the area. Sorry, but there was nothing else I could do. The lady said that he only needed to come down the soi and ring the bell. It should have been simple but now it had turned into a drama. Elsewhere a delivery rider went to get some mates and attack a man after an argument over delivery. Following the pandemic people in Thailand continue to use delivery services for many meals, with the inevitable consequence when this goes wrong being reported by the Thai press, notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 21. Daily News Thai Caption: Attack by delivery men Daily News reported on an alarming incident in Thailand yesterday after a woman ordered papaya salad and BBQ chicken from her usual stall and had it delivered by a delivery rider. Thongkham,48, a dealer in second hand goods, was at his desk when the rider arrived to deliver the food to his wife Siriporn. An argument developed in which the rider said he had had his time wasted because the address was not correct. Siriporn said she ordered from the shop regularly and always got her food delivered with no problems. The rider left and came back with four men who were not in the dress of the delivery company. They approached and threatened Thongkham who drew a gun. They left picking up a tonic bottle as they did and throwing it at his car. The scary incident is being reported to police with CCTV footage as evidence. The wife said that she wouldn't be getting any more deliveries - she'd be walking to the som tam stall herself next time. The incident happened in Bang Pa-in, Ayutthaya province, central Thailand. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-07-28 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
