The controversial Klong Dan wastewater treatment project has made headlines at regular intervals over the past three decades. News reports initially described the plant as a solution to water pollution, then the “mother of all corruption cases”, and now an expensive lesson. The government has poured more than 20 billion baht into the Klong Dan project – which has never gone into operation – and will now be required to pay nearly 30 billion baht more to constructor NVPSKG in what has been described as a “stupidity fee”. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Senior political-office holders and civil servants have been convicted of wrongdoing in relation to the project, as have NVPSKG executives. Long and murky history After Samut Prakan was declared a pollution-control zone in 1994, Suwat Liptapanlop – then the science, technology and environment minister – pushed hard to launch a large wastewater treatment project in the riverside province. But before his initiative could win approval, the House was dissolved for a general election. Thailand does the math: Two are dying per hour on the Thai roads Thai PBS had a report about the appalling state of the Thai Roads. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1254746-thailand-does-the-math-two-are-dying-per-hour-on-the-thai-roads/ -
Thai PBS had a report about the appalling state of the Thai Roads. And they did the math with the help of a safety expert about the sheer numbers of people dying from all age groups in Thai society. Withaya Chartbanchachai said that 17,831 people died in 2020. 49 a day. Two an hour. 24/7, seven days a week, 52 weeks a year etc.... Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe The feature story also contained details of how the victims of the carnage on the Thai roads are getting older. In the past it has always been that the younger people were more susceptible to death on the roads but now there has been a massive increase in older working people and retirees dying. So much so that numbers in the different age groups are now similar. From 2020 to 2021 there were 34,788 road fatalities. These figures do not contain the first three months of this year. It was observed in the report that encouraging Thais to wear face masks has been easy - getting them to wear helmets is quite another matter. Analysts Warn Regulation Could Affect SCB Bitkub Deal by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - Analysts have warned that the Siam Commercial Bank’s investment deal in Bitkub Online might be affected by the recent regulation proposed by the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to limit investment by commercial banks in digital asset businesses. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1254739-analysts-warn-regulation-could-affect-scb-bitkub-deal/ -
by Krajangwit Johjit BANGKOK (NNT) - Analysts have warned that the Siam Commercial Bank’s investment deal in Bitkub Online might be affected by the recent regulation proposed by the Bank of Thailand (BoT) to limit investment by commercial banks in digital asset businesses. The central bank is considering new rules governing subsidiaries of commercial banks’ investments in digital assets, including allowing them to invest up to 3% of their capital in such businesses. With this new rule, the recent 17.85-billion-baht investment deal by SCB in Bitkub might be affected since 3% of SCB’s capital would be about 12.6 billion baht. Keep up to date with all things Thailand - Join our daily ASEAN NOW Thailand Newsletter - Click to subscribe Analysts at Asia Plus Securities (ASPS) said the new regulation’s possible calculation methods could compel SCB to negotiate a lower price with Bitkub or postpone the deal, with other investors following suit to comply with the criteria. The ASPS analysts are, however, optimistic that the transaction can still be accomplished, similar to how the central bank allows SCB to invest 7% of its capital in fintech. They noted that the central bank may consider pushing or revoking the limit if local digital asset businesses meet corporate governance and market conduct standards. BoT said the new regulation, which could go into effect in the middle of 2022, allows for greater business flexibility while also upgrading supervision to keep up with changing risks. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-03-26 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
