  1. By Arun Saronchai Thailand finally released its long anticipated response to the ongoing Ukrainian crisis this week in an address to the plenary at the United Nations. Here is what we said to the diplomats gathered at the United Nations General Assembly. We might as well recall our UN ambassador and shut down the diplomatic corps. The fact that our Ministry of Foreign Affairs takes itself so seriously is a joke propped up by delusions of grandeur. 3. Providing skills-based volunteering to help local businesses preparing to welcome tourists back into Thailand’s bustling capital. TAT Newsroom Bangkok, 01 March, 2022 – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is applauding digital travel platform Agoda, through its network of volunteers, for their tourism-related initiative aimed at helping local tourism businesses in Bangkok’s Talat Noi community to prepare to welcome back tourists. Mr. Siripakorn Cheawsamut, TAT Deputy Governor for Marketing Communications, said, “Community-based tourism is an important element of the various Thailand tourism experiences on offer to visiting travellers, and TAT is delighted that Agoda is involved in further enhancing the promotion of tourism in the Talat Noi community.” Through a partnership with TAT and HiveSters, a social enterprise that aims to preserve and help Thai culture flourish by empowering local masters, Agoda brought volunteers from its Bangkok office to Talat Noi on Tuesday, 22 February and Friday, 25 February. Over the two days, the volunteers shared their technology, photography, marketing, and design skills with the local community. Mr. Greg Wong, Agoda Managing Director, said, “Through this initiative, Agoda’s team in Bangkok offered a diverse range of skills, backgrounds, and experiences and provided guidance, support, and ideas to help these small to mid-sized enterprises in Talat Noi to flourish.” Situated along the famed Chao Phraya River between Yaowarat (Bangkok’s Chinatown) and Bang Rak, Talat Noi – meaning ‘little market’ – is a charming neighbourhood of quaint shophouses and tiny winding streets with a character all of its own. Talat Noi is known for its food vendors and cultural activities, while street art is beginning to make an appearance in the area along with more hostels that are popping up. The Talat Noi volunteer days followed similar outings where Agoda volunteers helped plant trees in Chiang Mai, and cleaned Bangkok’s Khlong Lat Phrao and Phuket beaches as part of the series of #MyPledge clean events. Similar activities have also been held in Hong Kong, Singapore, and Indonesia. 10. By Serichon Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24 was met with global outrage and disbelief. 77 years after the end of World War II, it is incredible to find Europe, once again, at war. With the global economy already heavily suffering from the Covid-19 pandemic, this war is not only threatening the sovereignty of Ukraine, but the world’s political and economic stability in all continents. Thailand’s (and ASEAN’s) stance on this matter has been ambiguous and half-hearted at best. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ ridiculous two bullet-point statement appealing for peace through dialog clearly illustrates the government’s unwillingness to get involved in the matter. He went to his beer league hockey game and “everybody was talking about it” trying to figure out who it was. The next day, Joseph saw a Postmedia report mentioning that accused killer Gene Lahrkamp was a dog breeder and it clicked: The younger guy he had many casual conversations with was alleged by police to be an international hitman. “It’s shocking because it’s out of the ordinary,” Joseph told Postmedia News. “Never would have known he was a hitman.” Since moving to the top of Lookout Mountain just over four years ago, Lahrkamp had friendly interactions with the neighbours he passed on his daily walk with one of his Belgian Malinois dogs. 19. Frenchman’s rescue in Chiang Mai highlights Thailand as a caring alternative to nursing homes by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor A 72 year old French national was found alive and well by a team of police officers, volunteers and local officials on Friday last after he was reported missing by his Thai wife. A UK man who moved to Thailand when his wife was first diagnosed with oncoming Alzheimer’s, speaks positively about the kingdom which still offers a life ‘in paradise’ to many elderly foreigners with income who seek to retire in stark comparison to life in a nursing home where many residents spend 23 hours locked in a room on a daily basis. 20. A 72 year old French national was found alive and well by a team of police officers, volunteers and local officials on Friday last after he was reported missing by his Thai wife. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor A UK man who moved to Thailand when his wife was first diagnosed with oncoming Alzheimer’s, speaks positively about the kingdom which still offers a life ‘in paradise’ to many elderly foreigners with income who seek to retire in stark comparison to life in a nursing home where many residents spend 23 hours locked in a room on a daily basis. An elderly French man was rescued by local volunteers and the Royal Thai Police last Friday after he had gone missing for over 24 hours. The foreign retiree, living in Thailand, it was revealed, suffers from Alzheimer’s which played a part in his misadventure. The story is not unusual. It highlights the growing number of western retirees living in Thailand with dementia and how the kingdom has become a hub for western nationals and their families seeking an alternative to the nursing home care sector in western countries where many residents receive a paucity of care in drab and overcrowded conditions. 72-year-old Jacques Moriceau is reunited with his Thai wife in the Doi Tao district of Chiang Mai on Friday after emerging from a local hospital where he was subjected to a checkup. The elderly expat, who suffers from Alzheimer’s, had set off on Thursday morning to visit the consulate in the centre of Chiang Mai. Police say he became disoriented on his way home in the Hang Dong district and was found the next day at a deserted hilltop temple in Doi Tao, over 100 km away. 21. Why do we continue to receive smaller pensions than European expats? by Michael Bridge An old chestnut maybe, but I feel I am being penalised for deciding to move to Thailand to retire. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1251824-why-do-we-continue-to-receive-smaller-pensions-than-european-expats/
  22. by Michael Bridge An old chestnut maybe, but I feel I am being penalised for deciding to move to Thailand to retire. As a British taxpayer for most of my life, the UK awarded me the top bracket for my pension when I reached 65 years old. That was seven years ago, and they gave me GBP177.50 a week. OK to start with that meant they transferred THB36,400 a month to my Thai bank account. Now at the current exchange rate that has dropped to THB31,237 a month. However, as this is not indexed linked, I still get GBP177.50 today because OAPs in Asia are not entitled to have their payments indexed linked at all. If, however, I had decided to retire to say Spain, today they would be sending me GBP185.00 a week, which would equate at today’s exchange rate to THB35,417 a month. That said an extra THB4,180 a month would go a long way in buying my monthly food bill. I left England back in 2004 after divorcing my wife and therefore canceled all my UK bank accounts as I moved to the UAE and then Thailand. Now I am sure several of you who still retain an address in the UK, could get around the system by having their pension paid into a UK bank and then sent over here. However, you do need a permanent UK address, which I do not have. Unfair retiring in Thailand I still find it hard to take on board that if I paid my taxes and National insurance why can I not choose where I want to live? What difference to the UK Pension office is it, if they transfer my pension to Spain or Thailand? It is about time all of us UK expats got a fair deal. Let us know if you are also becoming the poor relation in expat pension transfers or is it just our bad luck. Could we do anything about it? YES....Here is the latest petition to the British government.
