  1. Picture: Thai Rath Petchkasem police in Bangkok got a call that a man had fallen to his death down a drain at a gas station in Bang Khae yesterday evening. Police captain Ekkachai Innimit went to the Caltex near the Indy Market as rescue teams were informed. Down a 50 cm x one meter drain with no cover surrounded by old tires was 64 year old Suwan Phromnork from Korat. He was in a seated position down the drain with water up to his chest. La-euay Meuanjai, 67, his wife, arrived at the scene and said that her husband had left their place in Bang Khae at midday to visit a repair garage by the gas station where his taxi was in for a service. Picture: Thai Rath He'd been drinking with friends there while waiting for the repair. By evening it still wasn't complete so he decided to come home, reported Thai Rath. On the way he stopped to relieve himself and it looks like he stumbled and fell down the hole, said his wife who would not press charges. Police are investigating. 3. Picture: Thai Rath Spokesman for the prosecutors' office Prayuth Petchrakhun told Thai Rath yesterday that the decision on whether to prosecute the lance corporal involved in the death of an opthalmologist in Bangkok would be announced today. Dr Kratai was killed on the crossing in Phayathai district earlier this month. It sparked outrage and has led to scrutiny of how motorists behave at crossings and the involvement of the police. Dr Kratai was hit by a Ducati ridden by Norawich Buadok. Phayathai police have charged him with nine offences including what amounts to vehicular homicide that could see him jailed for ten years. Some think he will walk, however, and the decision of prosecutors at 9.30 am today will be followed with much interest in the Thai press. 5. A washing machine repairman was not overly concerned about the theft of his wallet except for one thing. Inside was the only picture Aphichit Charoensuk, 50, had of his son who went missing 20 years ago. "I feel like now I'll never see him again," lamented Aphichit to Siam Rath as he showed CCTV from a car care company. Aphichit had been repairing a coin-op washing machine at the facility and had put his wallet containing many documents on a coin machine. When he had finished his work behind a PTT gas station in Bang Lamung, Pattaya he discovered the theft and looked at the CCTV. This revealed a man in t-shirt and Bermuda shorts who slipped the wallet into a bag before he left the scene in an Isuzu pick-up that had been in for cleaning. "I want my picture back," declared the distraught dad who felt this was his last chance of ever seeing his missing son again. He appealed to the thief to send it to him. Huay Yai police are investigating. However, the government said the system will not be canceled, but other restrictions could be eased in March. “The Thailand Pass system cannot be lifted because it’s a data center for important information on tourists which can be used to trace them when they travel in Thailand,” Tourism and Sports Minister Pipat Ratchakitprakarn was quoted by Krungthep Turakij on Monday. Thailand Pass is a state registration system where all visitors planning to enter the country must register before entering the country. The system was put in place in July 2021. 23. Why do so many expats fall off their balconies in Thailand? It is becoming almost the norm to read in the papers or online that another expat has tragically died falling from a balcony. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1251075-why-do-so-many-expats-fall-off-their-balconies-in-thailand/
  24. It is becoming almost the norm to read in the papers or online that another expat has tragically died falling from a balcony. This week alone there have been a further two incidents in Pattaya where people have met their death falling off a balcony. There seems to be more than a bit of a trend going on here, in what is one of the other most popular tourist areas in Thailand. It seems hardly a month goes by without yet another balcony-related death. This sadly is not entirely a new phenomenon as we reported as far back as 2016 that a Finn was found dead, ten floors below a Jomtien Beach condo. The UK Foreign & Commonwealth office, alone with ABTA has often urged British nationals to take care on balconies and this even prompted the FCO and ABTA to launch a campaign warning of the dangers. It was reported that three thousand British people fall off balconies each year while abroad. Spain has a similar problem Spain is one of the most popular holiday destinations for Britons, but recent deaths and accidents after Britons have fallen from balconies have forced the FCO to update their travel advice for the country. Spain has been a top holiday spot for years, but a spate of deaths and serious accidents in the country has forced the Foreign and Commonwealth Office to issue new travel advice. Could it be the low construction heights? Apparently, most balconies in Thailand have barriers that are about 700 or 800 mm high - for the shorter Thai people - and there is little or no policing of building regulations. Whereas in Australia there is a one-meter minimum for example on building balconies over there. Therefore, if a tall Expat (over 5.10) stands next to a 700 mm railing, it only reaches their thighs. Now take an old man drinking and losing balance a bit and over they go. It happens – there are many incidences of accidental falls. Sadly some of course are not and can be linked to concerns over many issues including finances and depression. But maybe the time has come to at least force the Thai developers to raise the height of balconies in the future. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2022-02-22 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
