  1. Daily News caption: "He wants to sleep in the traffic" Thai netizens had a comment-fest after pictures of a motorcyclist in an orange jacket lying down on his bike were posted on Facebook. While Daily News said he was showing his skill most posters said showing his stupidity, more like. Picture: Daily News The poster said, with a slathering of delicious irony, that it was good that he was wearing a helmet - it'll be useful for easily gathering his brains when he has an accident. Always assuming, notes ASEAN NOW, that his brains were in his head and not his toes that were somewhere nearer the handlebars! One poster suggested he was just trying to sleep, give him a break, while another said it would all end in a "big wai" and be noted that he was "the main breadwinner of the family" who "love him dearly". Thai netizens would give ASEAN NOW posters a run for their money it seems! Others just thought that the police should act fast and book him as an example to other idiots. Daily News found out from the poster that the incident happened on the Saraburi - Lomsak road in Phetchaburi province in the north east of Thailand. 5. Picture: Siam Rath ASEAN NOW notes that Thai media seem to be falling over themselves to get stories of people being hit on Zebra crossings. This follows a high profile case in which a female doctor called Kratai was killed on a crossing in Phayathai, Bangkok. It would be foolish to believe there is a sudden spate of this kind of accident - the media are just on a roll for something that happens all the time, we suggest. In this incident reported by Siam Rath Hua Mark police were called to Soi 24 behind Ramkhamhaeng University, Bangkok, after a Grab biker on a Honda Click called Direk collided with Phimchaya and Nopparat who suffered minor injuries and were taken to hospital after first aid was administered. Police plan to meet the rider and victims today. Also meeting will be high level police and other authorities after an order by DPM Prawit Wongsuwon to get tough on motorists ignoring pedestrians at Zebra Crossings in the wake of Dr Kratai's death last week. 11. Hua Hin Immigration office. File Photo By Online Reporter Prachuap Khiri Khan Immigration on Thursday (Jan 27) confirmed that eligible foreigners have until March 25 to apply for a so-called COVID visa extension. Eligible foreigners are those who were granted special permission to remain in Thailand due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and were given a so-called ‘COVID visa’. The scheme to give leeway to tourists was originally implemented as countries around the world began to close borders and airlines suspend flights. For some, this meant that travel home or out of Thailand was impossible. 16. China’s Belt and Road now knocks on Thailand’s door to the north but is the kingdom on board? by Joseph O' Connor In mid-January, the Thai cabinet gave the go-ahead for an expanded rail service into Laos and the construction of a new bridge from Nong Khai across the Mekong River. It comes after the State Railway of Thailand announced plans, last September, to upgrade its rail depot and facilities at the border station. All of this is happening as Thai traders grumble about restricted access to China for Thai fruit and produce while Chinese imports flood into markets in northern Thailand. At the same time, Bangkok must run the gauntlet between efforts to successfully exploit better rail connectivity with China, the huge cost of high-speed rail links and making sure the effects of the increased links with the expanding Chinese economy are positive in the longer term for the kingdom. The high-speed rail link for which a contract was signed between the State Railway of Thailand and four Chinese firms on March 29th 2021 is understood to be proceeding at a slow pace with only 4% of the project as yet complete extending from Nakhon Ratchasima. At the same time, Bangkok must run the gauntlet between efforts to successfully exploit better rail connectivity with China, the huge cost of high-speed rail links and making sure the effects of the increased links with the expanding Chinese economy are positive in the longer term for the kingdom. by Joseph O' Connor The high-speed rail link for which a contract was signed between the State Railway of Thailand and four Chinese firms on March 29th 2021 is understood to be proceeding at a slow pace with only 4% of the project as yet complete extending from Nakhon Ratchasima. There had been uncertainty about the second phase of the proposed high-speed rail link being pushed by China linking Nakhon Ratchasima with Nong Khai although Thai planners are now reported to have prepared their own blueprint. In December, Thai Minister of Transport, Saksayam Chidchob reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to the Thai Chinese high-speed rail link and promised that the second line, linking Bangkok with Nong Khai by hi-speed rail, would be operational by 2028. Thailand already operates an existing rail service to Nong Khai which is linked to Bangkok. After years of rhetoric, negotiations and the signing of accords, the Chinese Belt and Road initiative came knocking on Thailand’s door last December with the opening of the Boten to Vientiane high-speed rail link which has suddenly opened up northern Thailand to China’s southern provinces. While Thai authorities are working to embrace the opportunity the initiative has to offer, there are already signs that the reality on the ground will, at the same time, present challenges for Thailand. China’s Belt and Road initiative came to life in northeastern Thailand last December when the rail link from Boten in Laos near its border with Yunnan in China and the capital Vientiane was inaugurated on the 3rd December 2021. 19. Sanook caption: Caught in the act The director of a school in the north east of Thailand was caught peeping at a female teacher in the shower at accommodation for staff. When confronted about it he admitted it and laughed it off "like someone with mental problems", according to a post made on Jay Moi V Plus. The female victim has been unable to work since and has reported the matter to the school and area educational authority but nothing has happened. Since the incident last Thursday, January 20th, the director has been working as if nothing happened. He was caught on CCTV dressed in just a towel. He was pretending to be doing some watering of vegetables - this at 8 pm. The teacher went on a chat group and got two male colleague to hurry and investigate and they saw the director. When confronted he said there was no need to view CCTV - he admitted it and told them to get over it. But now parents and students at the school in Porncharoen district of Beung Kan province have held a large gathering to demand the director's removal. A video showed a number of placards and a banner being unfurled as an adult announced over the loudspeaker that students should make their feelings known. The teacher concerned told Sanook that she was stressed, unable to work and would go to the police if action is not taken. Hawker stalls, mom and pop shops, and small businesses that once fought for space along the pavement and sidewalks were no more. Those that have been to some of Thailand’s busiest streets whether in Pattaya, Patong, Hua Hin, Patpong, Khaosan will all see similar, depressing sights. More than the jobs and economic prospects lost, the Covid-19 pandemic has also taken away loved ones and colleagues, friends and families. Thousands have perished to the disease, thousands more are affected by the void they leave behind. 23. Anti Human Trafficking police arrested a 27 year old man called Jirayuth - nickname Kij - in Beung Kham Phroy sub-district of Lam Lukka, Pathum Thani yesterday, reported Daily News. The suspect has been charged with profiting by the sale and distribution of child pornography. Electrical equipment was taken into evidence. He got customers to be members of a secret Line group after attracting them through VK - Russia's version of Facebook. Users paid 100-150 baht to be members to view the sick material. Kij promised pedophiles "cheap prices, enough content for all day viewing and updates every day". Police said that he noticed a business opportunity by getting already available content from free sites and charging for it on a Line group. He had 500 members and had earned 100,000 baht over the last year. Now he will face a very long time in jail, notes ASEAN NOW. Thailand is stepping up its action against pedophiles and those who profit by the selling of pornography of children in recent months. The appointment of top cop Lt-Gen Surachate "Big Joke" Hakpan to front efforts can been seen as refreshing the commitment to act in this regard. Thailand has been under international pressure for years to curb the trade in crime against children.
