  1. Opinions vary on Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha’s declaration last night (Monday) about Thailand’s gradual reopening plans with the next phase to start on November 1st, as many are skeptical of the country’s readiness and whether the plans will revive the dying tourism industry as hoped, as new COVID-19 infections and fatalities remain high, while vaccination rates remain low. With the Thai-language hashtags #Prayut and #ReopeningTheCountry top trending on Twitter, Thai netizens are debating fiercely on the plans. One user, @khunzakame, tweeted in English “To everyone who wants to come to Thailand, come here if you dare…” together with a graph showing an upward trend in COVID-19 cases since April 2021. Another netizen, with the handler @@PI3CHECK, heeded the same warning in their tweet, “Okay Listen… If you want to travel in Thailand this last year! You should beware Thai people spread you some Covid-19! Because we didn’t get any vaccines yet! Be careful!” Discover Cigna’s range of health insurance solutions created for expats and local nationals living in Thailand - click to view Full story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/many-doubt-thailands-readiness-in-gradual-reopening/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2021-10-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

  3. By Goong Nang(GN) Pattaya – Several Pattaya residents discovered a surprise when they called police after hearing disturbing crying from an abandoned shophouse near their business and residence yesterday, October 11th, during the early hours of the morning. Based on witness statements, those who first heard the crying believed that the abandoned apartment and home were haunted by a ghost. In Thailand, belief in spirits and ghosts is fairly widespread. Due to fear of the “ghost” they called the Pattaya police to assist and investigate the crying and howling noises. The Pattaya City Police were notified of the “ghost” at 2:00 A.M. at an unoccupied and abandoned shophouse in Nongrue. Pattaya Police and The Pattaya News reporters arrived at the scene at the abandoned shophouse to find not a ghost but a homeless man whose name and nationality was not been identified. 17. Picture: Daily News It has emerged that several drug mules transporting 35 kilos of heroin through the backroads of Chiang Mai were paid just 5,000 baht each for the job. They would face a lifetime in prison - possibly even a death sentence - for what amounts to less than US $200. New Region 5 chief Pol Lt-Gen Piya Tawichai said that the case was the biggest in Chiang Mai in three years with the drugs seized woth 20 million baht, reported Daily News. Police had received information about a delivery from across the Thai border of a large lot from a factory. Instead of using the main roads that might have checkpoints the Toyota was driven along country lanes from Fang to Chiang Dao. But the cops were following and after a chase ensued they shot out the tires and moved in. Arrested were Arthit, 26, Eua, 36, and a 15 year old boy. Akhari managed to flee into the night. Arthit was hit in the leg by a bullet fragment and injured. Piya promised that the inquiry would be expanded - but once again it appears that just hapless, poor mules were arrested while the big guys remain at large to try again, notes ASEAN NOW. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

  19. Picture: Daily News Daily News reported that a video of an incident at a T-junction was being widely commented upon online. The video showed a traffic cop in the middle of a main road as traffic pours out of a side road. Two people on a motorcycle could barely avoid colliding with the officer who waves for them to stop. They all tumble to the tarmac. Netizens blamed both the cop and the motorcyclists in the 47 second clip that was posted to "Kwai Lut Thaonon" - buffaloes let loose on the roads. The cop should have picked a better place to try and stop them and the motorcyclists should have been wearing helmets in the first place, said people online. -- © Copyright ASEAN NOW 2021-10-12 - Whatever you're going through, the Samaritans are here for you - Follow ASEAN NOW on LINE for breaking COVID-19 updates

(Photo by Lillian SUWANRUMPHA / AFP) Legalized ride-hailing taxi services, which start next month, will offer more choices, but both consumer satisfaction and drivers’ welfare are dependent on many variable factors in the post-COVID-19 scenario. Technology disruption, consumer complaints about taxi services, and some confrontations between unregulated private taxi drivers and public taxi drivers have forced the Transport Ministry to come up with regulations. The new rules are in line with the Cabinet resolution adopted in May allowing the use of personal cars for ride-hailing taxi services via apps, with seating limited to seven.
