Former Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam has denied accusations of facilitating Thaksin Shinawatra’s extended stay in the Police General Hospital instead of incarceration. These claims emerged from Sonthi Limthongkul, a media mogul, suggesting Wissanu assisted in transferring Thaksin from the Corrections Hospital due to an alleged severe ailment. Thaksin, convicted on corruption charges, remained in the hospital until his parole, consequently not spending time in a prison cell. Sonthi's allegations imply preferential treatment was arranged, sparking public debate. Wissanu, who served under Prayut Chan-o-cha, firmly rejected these accusations. He described events leading to Thaksin's hospital transfer, recounting a late-night call from a Corrections Department official. "I was informed near midnight about Thaksin’s serious illness and his move to the Police General Hospital," Wissanu stated. "By then, the transfer was already completed." He explained that his immediate instruction was to monitor Thaksin's condition, expecting a brief hospitalisation. "I assumed his stay would be short since I had no detailed knowledge of his health status," Wissanu added. His tenure as deputy prime minister was notably brief following these events, and he asserts that any involvement on his part was minimal and reactive rather than proactive. This turn of events has stirred discussion about political influence and justice administration in Thailand. Wissanu insists his actions were confined to procedural adherence following Thaksin’s reported medical needs. The former PM's prolonged hospitalisation, under medical pretenses, aligns with varying views on privilege and penal reform. Wissanu's rebuttal seeks to clarify misconceptions, distilling his role to informational relay rather than strategic intervention. The situation underscores ongoing scrutiny of political dynamics intersecting with legal and healthcare protocols in Thailand, reported Thai PBS. Picture courtesy: Thai Rath -- 2024-10-12

Thai High-Risk Groups Urged to Get Covid-19 Boosters Picture courtesy: Freepik Medical experts in Thailand are advising high-risk groups to receive boosters for Covid-19, given a recent surge in cases and fatalities. Medical experts in Thailand are advising high-risk groups to receive boosters for Covid-19, given a recent surge in cases and fatalities. This push comes in light of new data revealing approximately 700,000 infections and 205 Covid-related deaths in 2023, positioning Thailand as having the highest infection and death rates for Covid-19 in Southeast Asia. Assoc Prof Dr Piroon Mootsikapun, President of the Infectious Diseases Association of Thailand, highlighted that the current wave of Covid-19 is hitting the nation harder than any other country in the region. Most concerning are the fatalities in the so-called 608 high-risk group, which includes those aged 60 and older, individuals with chronic health conditions, and pregnant women. Dr Piroon emphasised the severity of Covid-19 compared to influenza, pointing out that the infection rate and death toll are significantly higher. "Of the Covid-19 fatalities, 80-90% were in the 608 risk group," he noted. Prof Dr Sasisopin Kiertiburanakul, from the Royal College of Physicians of Thailand, echoed the call for vaccinations, stressing the importance of boosters in preventing severe illness. The current booster shots are reported to offer 60-70% effectiveness in reducing hospitalisations and deaths among the most vulnerable. Reports of Long Covid, which can affect other organs and significantly impact health post-recovery, were found in 15% of Covid-19 patients. Given this, the boosters gain added importance. Community advocates, like Tanapol Dokkaew from the Kidney Friends Association of Thailand, are urging the government to ensure a steady supply of vaccines, particularly for high-risk individuals. “Covid-19 is here to stay, so booster shots are crucial, especially for the 608 group,” he commented, urging continued vigilance amidst increasing complacency, reported Bangkok Post. Tik Shiro Car Crash Sparks Demand for Alcohol Test Inquiry Picture courtesy: Siam Rath BANGKOK - Surasit Silapngam, Manager of the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation, urged national police chief Pol. Gen. BANGKOK - Surasit Silapngam, Manager of the Don’t Drive Drunk Foundation, urged national police chief Pol. Gen. Kittirat Phanphat to initiate an investigation into the actions of Pol. Col. Narenthraeng Kluengsanook, chief of Khannayao Police Station. The call follows an incident where Narenthraeng declined to administer an alcohol test on Sirisak Nantasena, better known as singer Tik Shiro, after a crash that left two people dead and one injured. The accident took place in the Khannayao Police Station jurisdiction. Silapngam stated that he had formally requested the establishment of an investigative committee to review the police chief's decision, which he claims violated the National Police Office’s regulations on alcohol testing. These regulations, effective since October 7, 2022, mandate blood alcohol testing in accident cases involving fatalities or injuries. The foundation’s manager stressed the importance of adherence to these rules, warning that such negligence could set a dangerous precedent nationwide. He explained that any delay or failure to conduct alcohol tests could allow offenders to evade charges, as alcohol levels naturally decline over time. Silapngam dismissed common excuses like chest pain, which are often cited to avoid testing, as legally unfounded. He noted that even unconscious drivers could have their blood drawn for testing by hospital staff upon police request, without violating their rights. Silapngam also clarified that his request for an investigation is not motivated by personal animosity toward Narenthraeng. Instead, he hopes this case serves as a warning to police officers across the country. In fatal or injurious crashes, he said, alcohol testing must be conducted without exception. He further emphasized that suspects who refuse to cooperate with testing procedures should face charges under existing laws, which include up to two years in prison or fines ranging from 5,000 to 20,000 baht. Rain check: heavy downpours set to flood 43 provinces in Thailand by Bright Choomanee Picture courtesy of Marc Mintel, Unsplash The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another warning for continuous heavy rainfall impacting 43 provinces, including Bangkok and southern regions, with 70% of the areas affected, posing risks of flash floods. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1340401-rain-check-heavy-downpours-set-to-flood-43-provinces-in-thailand/ -
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued another warning for continuous heavy rainfall impacting 43 provinces, including Bangkok and southern regions, with 70% of the areas affected, posing risks of flash floods. Today, the TMD forecasted 24-hour weather conditions, noting that easterly winds are bringing moisture from the South China Sea and the Gulf of Thailand to cover the lower northeastern region, the central region, including Bangkok and surrounding areas, and the eastern region. This weather pattern is causing heavy rainfall in some areas of the lower central region, Bangkok, and its vicinity, as well as the eastern region. Additionally, a weak high-pressure system continues covering the upper northeastern region, resulting in cool morning temperatures. Residents in northern Thailand are advised to take care of their health due to these changing weather conditions, said a TMD spokesperson. “We urge the public in the northern part of Thailand to maintain their health amidst these fluctuating weather conditions.” The monsoon trough passing over the upper southern region is leading to very heavy rainfall in some areas. Residents in these regions should be on high alert for potential dangers from very heavy and accumulated rainfall, which could result in flash floods and forest runoff, especially in areas near slopes, watercourses, and low-lying regions. Meanwhile, the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are experiencing weak wind waves, with waves below 1 metre. However, in areas with thunderstorms, waves can exceed 2 metres. Mariners should avoid sailing in areas with thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall The northern region will experience thunderstorms in 30% of the area, mostly in Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lampang, Lamphun, Tak, and Kamphaeng Phet provinces. The minimum temperature will be between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, with a maximum temperature of 31 to 34 degrees Celsius. Easterly winds are blowing at speeds of 10 to 30 kilometres per hour. Waves in the sea will be below 1 metre, but in areas with thunderstorms, waves can exceed 2 metres. The southern region (east coast) will experience thunderstorms in 70% of the area, with very heavy rainfall expected in Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Surat Thani, Nakhon Si Thammarat, Phatthalung, Songkhla, Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat provinces. The minimum temperature will be between 23 and 25 degrees Celsius, with a maximum temperature of 29 and 34 degrees Celsius. Variable winds are blowing at speeds of 10 to 30 kilometres per hour. Bhumjaithai abstains from House vote on referendum bill by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The Bhumjaithai Party refrained from participating in a House vote rejecting the Senate’s decision to maintain the double-majority clause in the constitutional referendum bill, according to party leader Anutin Charnvirakul. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1340399-bhumjaithai-abstains-from-house-vote-on-referendum-bill/ -
The Bhumjaithai Party refrained from participating in a House vote rejecting the Senate’s decision to maintain the double-majority clause in the constitutional referendum bill, according to party leader Anutin Charnvirakul. The House of Representatives voted 348 to zero yesterday, October 10, to reject the Senate’s amendments to the referendum bill, with 65 abstentions. The original House-endorsed bill proposed a change to simplify the passing of referendums. It required only a simple majority—50% of those casting votes—to approve a result. However, the Senate reinstated the original double-majority requirement, stipulating that at least half of eligible voters must cast votes, and the result must be supported by at least half of the voter turnout. When the bill returned to the House, Bhumjaithai’s abstention led some to speculate that the party was opposing the government’s consensus to eliminate the double-majority requirement. Before yesterday’s vote, the ruling Pheu Thai Party and the main opposition People’s Party reaffirmed the Lower House’s decision to adopt the simple majority rule, citing concerns that the double-majority rule could delay a constitutional rewrite. Anutin, who also serves as deputy prime minister and interior minister, asserted that Bhumjaithai’s abstention was meant to ensure thorough consideration of the bill. “It all has to do with ensuring referendums are credible and worthy of voters’ trust.” He emphasised that Bhumjaithai was open to input from the Senate and other stakeholders but insisted that improvements to the referendum process should be approached with caution. “A referendum is a critical issue, and it is crucial for setting the country’s direction. It shouldn’t be rushed.” Joint committee Following yesterday’s House vote, a joint MP-Senator committee will be established to reconcile the differences in the bill. The 28-member panel will be evenly divided between the two Houses, and the Senate is expected to appoint its committee members by October 15. During the debate preceding the vote, People’s Party MP Parit Wacharasindhu expressed concern that the double-majority rule could mislead voters. He argued that voters seeking to defeat a referendum could abstain from voting, causing the double-majority requirement to fail. “This is not about increasing the ease of passing a referendum. But the rules should not permit one side to gain undue advantage by campaigning for a referendum no-show.” Conversely, Bhumjaithai MP Mallika Jirapan from Lopburi defended the double-majority rule approved by the Senate, noting its similarity to the version proposed by Bhumjaithai. The new Senate, largely composed of senators believed to have ties to Bhumjaithai, includes a record 14 senators from Buriram, the party’s stronghold, and numerous others from provinces where Bhumjaithai has a significant representation in the Lower House. The blue bloc, a term referring to Bhumjaithai, is said to include at least 150 of the 200 senators, reported Bangkok Post. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger -- 2024-10-11

He emphasized the city’s proactive measures to ensure tourist safety as the high season approaches. PATTAYA, Thailand – Mayor Poramet Ngampichet announced a significant increase in independent Chinese tourists visiting Pattaya during the recent Chinese National Holiday. However, the number of group tours from China has dropped by more than half. This decline is attributed to China’s recent policy encouraging domestic travel and the impact of recent flooding in Thailand, which has affected group bookings at various hotels. Despite the reduction in group tours, many independent Chinese travellers opted to visit Pattaya, contributing to the city’s vibrant tourism scene. As the city enters its high season, local authorities are taking proactive measures to ensure the safety of tourists, particularly in entertainment venues. Efforts are being made to enhance fire safety and overall emergency preparedness. By Pattaya Mail Full story: Pattaya Mail -- 2024-10-11
