Warong Dechgitvigrom. Picture courtesy Facebook/Warong Dechgitvigrom Dr. Warong Dechgitvigrom, leader of the pro-monarchy Thai Pakdee party, has raised concerns over the legality of the formation of the new People’s party. In a Facebook post today, he announced his intention to ask the Election Commission (EC) to investigate the legal processes involved. Warong specifically questioned whether the name change from ‘Thin Ka Khao Chao Wilai’ party to ‘Prachachon’ (People’s) party complied with the law. According to Warong, referencing data from the EC’s website, the ‘Thin Ka Khao Chao Wilai’ party, originally established in 2012, only has three branch offices—two in the northern region and one in the central region. He pointed out that the party lacks branches in the southern and north-eastern regions, a requirement under the Political Parties Act to maintain its status. In light of these discrepancies, Warong urged the EC to undertake a thorough investigation to ensure the legitimacy of the People’s party's formation. Transparency, he explained, is crucial for maintaining public trust in the electoral process. On the other side, the newly formed People’s party has seen remarkable support from the public. Just today, they announced that donations have exceeded 20 million baht and membership has climbed to over 38,000 in just two days since its establishment. The People’s party reported on their website last night that donations totalling 20,353,671 baht by 8 PM on Saturday will fund their operations for the next three months. Detailed expenditure plans were also shared: 7.9 million baht will be allocated for head office operations, 1.6 million baht for election campaigning and an emergency fund, 6.6 million baht for party activities across the country, and 4.1 million baht for other essential activities. The unfolding events have already sparked considerable interest and debate among political observers, who eagerly await the EC’s findings and any potential impact on the People’s party’s future. -- 2024-08-12 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. In a recent survey conducted by Dusit Poll, over 1,140 Thai citizens revealed a growing interest in political affairs, albeit for troubling reasons. Conducted amidst the controversial dissolution of the Move Forward Party, the survey captures a country steeped in political pessimism and dissatisfaction with its current government. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin finds himself at the centre of discontent. A significant 64% of respondents expressed limited confidence in his administration. More than half (55%) even called for a Cabinet reshuffle, underscoring a pervasive sense of frustration. The survey also revealed that 43% of Thais are now following political news more closely, drawn primarily by the Move Forward Party's recent troubles. This heightened interest, however, does not translate to optimism: 67% of those polled believe the political landscape will deterioratem reported Thai PBS . The timing of the survey, aligning with the Constitutional Court's ruling on the Move Forward dissolution, likely amplified these sentiments. Pollsters noted that while such interest is understandable, it also highlights a deeper, more worrying trend of political pessimism among the Thai population. A significant contributing factor to this disillusionment is the current government’s poor public perception. Analysts from Dusit Poll suggest that a more popular administration might have been better positioned to buffer the negative impact of recent political events. The distressing findings come just a day before Move Forward's rebranding announcement. Now set to be called "People," the new name aims to reflect the party’s continued commitment to the public. Supporters argue that the essence of the party remains unchanged, despite this nominal shift. Critics, however, argue that governmental critiques and rebrands alone won't reverse creeping despair. Renaming schemes, particularly ones as generic as "People," are unlikely to reinvigorate public interest or trust without substantial policy shifts. Historical patterns in politics, including "People's Power" in Thailand and "People Power" in South Korea, reflect a universally exhausted nomenclature. With political names saturated in symbolism and historical usage, it remains to be seen whether a fresh name will bring about any tangible change in public sentiment. The current atmosphere remains precariously pessimistic, suggesting that deeper reforms may be needed to restore faith in Thailand's political future. Srettha giving an interview. A street brawl between two tuk tuk drivers erupted yesterday, drawing significant online attention and criticism. The incident saw the drivers engage in a heated physical altercation, ignoring the desperate pleas of bystanders to stop. A video of the confrontation quickly went viral on social media, showing one of the drivers wielding a stick as the argument escalated. Despite numerous attempts by locals to intervene and diffuse the situation, the conflict intensified, leading to a full-blown brawl. Witnesses were heard shouting in an effort to put an end to the fight. However, the drivers continued to clash, disregarding the calls for peace. The footage was shared by a popular Facebook page, which often highlights viral and controversial events. The page captioned the clip with a message urging the drivers to resolve their differences peacefully. “Tuk tuk drivers fighting, not sure of the reason, but you share the same profession. Please talk it out… Violence is illegal.” The incident took place in broad daylight, shocking many who witnessed it firsthand. The video shows the two drivers swinging punches and grappling with each other on the road. While the exact cause of the dispute remains unclear, the violent nature of the altercation has sparked widespread condemnation. Police were not immediately on the scene, and by the time the video was shared online, the fight had already concluded. Locals expressed their dismay at the situation, noting that such acts of violence tarnish the reputation of tuk tuk drivers. Many social media users echoed this sentiment, calling for stricter regulations and penalties for those who engage in public brawls. Comments flooded in. “This kind of behaviour is unacceptable and gives a bad name to all tuk-tuk drivers. They should be held accountable.” “We need more enforcement of laws against violence. It’s disturbing to see such aggression in our streets.” The viral nature of the video has prompted discussions about the pressures and challenges faced by drivers, especially in a post-pandemic economy where competition for passengers is fierce. Some users speculated that the altercation may have been sparked by a dispute over fares or territory. by Ryan Turner Image courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-10 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Police arrested a Thai man for brutally killing another man on a road in the northern province of Kamphaengphet by repeatedly slashing him and cutting off his penis. The murder stemmed from a land dispute. Officers from the Khlonglan Police Station on Thursday, August 8, were called to the scene in the Khlong Ngarn district at about 10pm. The crime took place on a dirt road, which was covered in mud due to recent rainfall. The body of the victim, 53 year old Niwat, was also covered in mud. His overturned motorcycle was found 3 metres away. Niwat was wearing a red T-shirt and long dark blue trousers. He had deep wounds on his head, exposing his skull, as well as other cut wounds on his right cheek and stomach. His trousers were off and his penis was severed. Niwat’s wife, who was the first person to discover the body, revealed to the police that her husband left home to visit a temple to collect leftover food for their pet dogs. When he did not return for a long time, she went out to search for him. The wife spotted the overturned motorcycle and rushed to check, only to be shocked by the lifeless body of her husband. She ran back home to report the matter to the community leader, who then informed the police. The wife stated that she had no idea what could have led to the murder but believed that the killer must be very angry at her husband, as there was no reason to cut off his penis. Mislead attempt Police investigated possible motives for the murder and discovered that the deceased often argued with his neighbour, 58 year old Apiphat, over a land boundary. Officers visited the neighbour’s home yesterday to question him. Apiphat initially denied any involvement in the murder and allowed the police to search his home. Officers found a knife, suspected to be used in the murder, hidden in a pond on Apiphat’s property, prompting him to confess. Apiphat admitted that he sold a part of his land to Niwat, but that Niwat often encroached beyond the boundary of what he purchased. Additionally, Niwat still owed 30,000 baht for the land. Their ongoing arguments over this issue led Apiphat to plan the murder. Apiphat revealed that he cut off Niwat’s private part to mislead the police into thinking the murder was related to adultery. Niwat’s wife suspected that Apiphat did not commit the crime alone and urged the police to extend their investigation based on her suspicions. The police have not yet announced the legal charges against Apiphat but took him to the scene of the crime for a re-enactment today. According to similar cases, Apiphat is likely to be charged under Section 288 of the Criminal Code: intentional murder. The penalty for this offence is either the death penalty, life imprisonment, or imprisonment for 15 to 20 years. by Petch Petpailin Photo via KhaoSod and ThaiRath Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-10 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Banglamung, August 9th, 2024– Mr. Wikit Manarojkij, Banglamung District Chief, recently chaired a monthly meeting with village headmen and kamnans at the Sala Prachakom meeting room, Bang Lamung District Office. The focus of the meeting was on the strict enforcement of policies against gambling and drugs. Mr. Manarojkij highlighted two critical policies that must be rigorously followed: the prohibition of gambling and the crackdown on drug-related activities. He expressed concern over reports of gambling in certain areas that had not been communicated by the responsible village headmen or kamnans. He emphasized that any failure to report such activities would result in severe disciplinary action without the possibility of appeal. The District Chief reiterated that gambling is strictly prohibited under the policy of the Chonburi Governor and Thai law. Frustrated by ongoing issues with foul odors and wastewater emissions, more than 100 villagers from Village 3, Nong Hiang Sub-district, and Village 10, Nong Prue Sub-district, gathered to protest in front of a plastic smelting factory in Chonburi Province. The villagers have been allegedly suffering from the factory’s emissions for many years. Despite a previous protest on July 24, 2024, which led to an inspection by officials from the Chonburi Provincial Industry Office, the Phanat Nikhom District Chief, and the Nong Hiang Sub-district Administrative Organization, the factory has allegedly continued its operations without resolving the issues. During the previous protest, officials concluded that the factory should close for renovations to address the problems. However, the factory remained open, and the issues persisted. In response, the villagers gathered once again to demand action. This stark reality poses significant concerns over the country’s economic stability and long-term viability of its tourism sector. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335140-rising-temperatures-threaten-thailands-economy-tourism-and-future/ -
Thailand emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases but ranks among the top 10 countries most severely impacted by climate change. This stark reality poses significant concerns over the country’s economic stability and long-term viability of its tourism sector. A 2021 study by Swiss Re Institute projected that Thailand's GDP could plummet by 43.6% by 2048 due to temperature increases of up to 3.2°C. This would have a profound impact on a country heavily reliant on agriculture, tourism, and fisheries. The tourism industry, a cornerstone of Thailand's economy, faces substantial disruption. In the Andaman coast, shorter rainy seasons are expected, potentially extending the tourist season but exacerbating water shortages. Conversely, the Gulf of Thailand faces increased rainfall, leading to extended rainy seasons and more intense coastal erosion. In northern provinces, a reduction in cool days could lessen the appeal to domestic tourists who seek cooler climates. The risk to natural attractions is also escalating. National parks and forests could see higher wildfire risks due to drier and hotter conditions. The eastern region is forecasted to experience the highest temperatures nationwide. Meanwhile, Bangkok and its surrounding areas face severe flooding risks due to increased rainfall and obstructed water flows, putting communities and infrastructure at considerable risk. Thailand has committed to ambitious climate goals: achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, as declared by then-PM Prayut Chan-o-cha at the 2021 UN Climate Conference in Glasgow. Yet, experts criticize the country’s approach, noting that plans remain vague and lack robust incentives for adaptation, reported Prof Mingsarn Kaosa-ard in The Nation. According to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), state policy clarity, continuity, and effective standard-setting are pivotal yet uncertain factors. Effective management requires serious enforcement, integration across sectors, and investment in environmental technology and infrastructure. Additionally, the unpredictability of climate effects varies by region, disproportionately affecting low-income groups who have fewer resources to relocate. Decentralised climate management, with local governments taking active roles, may offer more tailored and effective solutions. Ultimately, addressing global warming in Thailand calls for more than state policies; it demands significant shifts in consumer behaviour to drive market changes towards sustainability. Reducing energy consumption, proper waste disposal, and sustainable living practices are actionable steps that individuals can take immediately. With coordinated efforts from both governance and the public, Thailand can enhance its resilience to climate impacts and move closer to its environmental targets. Major Casino Firms Eye Investment in Thailand's New Complex Reference photo courtesy: Wikipedia At least five significant global casino companies have shown strong interest in investing in Thailand's upcoming entertainment complex project. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335138-major-casino-firms-eye-investment-in-thailands-new-complex/ -
At least five significant global casino companies have shown strong interest in investing in Thailand's upcoming entertainment complex project. This interest comes as Thailand's government pushes forward with the draft bill for the Entertainment Complex Act. If passed, the law will legalise casinos in the country. Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, MGM China Holdings Limited, and Hard Rock Cafe are the major players keen on entering the Thai market. They have already initiated discussions with various government agencies and aligned with major Thai firms to explore potential investment avenues. These investors appear willing to meet the conditions set by the proposed Act, which include requirements for operators to be publicly listed companies in Thailand with a minimum paid-up capital of 10 billion baht. The licenses, valid for 30 years and renewable for up to 10 more years, come at significant costs: an application fee of 100,000 baht, an initial license fee of 5 billion baht, and an annual fee of 1 billion baht. Interestingly, the rule mandating that only 10-20% of the complex's area be allocated to casino operations, while still expected to generate 80% of the total revenue, hasn't deterred these investors. They are also prepared to offer diverse entertainment options, meeting the requirement for at least four types of non-casino entertainment as listed in the Act's appendix. However, the government's plan to designate specific areas for these complexes through a royal decree has sparked some resistance. While the government suggests five locations across various regions, the investors prefer choosing their sites to align better with their business strategies. Las Vegas Sands, founded by Sheldon Adelson in 1988, is a global leader valued at over $30 billion. Wynn Resorts, established by Steve Wynn in 2002, is renowned for blending luxury with gambling. Caesars Entertainment, one of the world's largest entertainment firms, boasts over 55 properties worldwide. MGM China Holdings, formed in 2004, is a joint venture between MGM Resorts and Pansy Ho. Lastly, Hard Rock International, known for its cafes and casinos, was started in London in 1971. The approval of the Entertainment Complex Act will likely trigger a major transformation in Thailand's entertainment landscape, promising substantial economic growth and job creation. Thailand's Digital Wallet Scheme: The Future of Money Picture courtesy: NNT Thailand has launched a ground-breaking digital wallet stipend scheme for eligible citizens, offering a potential glimpse into the future of money management. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335137-thailands-digital-wallet-scheme-the-future-of-money/ -
Thailand has launched a ground-breaking digital wallet stipend scheme for eligible citizens, offering a potential glimpse into the future of money management. Chai Wacharonke, the Thai Government Spokesperson, highlighted how the program forms a pivotal part of a broader economic strategy aimed at boosting household consumption and GDP. This effort seeks to address short-term economic needs, albeit with critics pointing out that it doesn’t tackle deeper issues like low investment. The scheme caught international attention when the Financial Times published an in-depth analysis by Eswar Prasad. Prasad, an Indian-American economist and professor at Cornell University, drew comparisons between Thailand's initiative and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) under consideration in various countries. Thailand's program integrates digital wallets, already popular among its citizens, into a government transfer plan aimed at low-income individuals. The funds are designed to be spent quickly and locally, with a six-month usage period that prohibits saving or misallocation. This direct approach promises to bypass traditional corruption channels by minimising the opportunities for fraud within government agencies. The article outlines several compelling advantages. Firstly, targeting low-income citizens ensures that the money is spent immediately rather than saved, creating a direct boost to economic activity. Secondly, by reducing opportunities for corruption through direct transfers, the scheme brings a welcomed transparency to government aid. Furthermore, by restricting the funds to be spent at local businesses, the program not only ensures that the money remains within the community but also supports small enterprises. This spreads the economic benefits widely and helps strengthen local economies. Prasad suggests that Thailand’s Digital Wallet scheme could pave the way for future adoption of CBDCs, potentially revolutionising the financial landscape. Such programs could serve as preliminary steps toward establishing a comprehensive digital economy, aligning with the Thai government's vision of becoming a Digital Economy Hub in the region. The initiative, while not without its critics, showcases a forward-thinking approach to economic management and may set a precedent for other nations considering similar digital transitions. Visa-free entry for Chinese nationals has many consequences By Barry Kenyon Chinese tourism to Thailand has recovered completely from the covid era.
