Banglamung, August 9th, 2024– Mr. Wikit Manarojkij, Banglamung District Chief, recently chaired a monthly meeting with village headmen and kamnans at the Sala Prachakom meeting room, Bang Lamung District Office. The focus of the meeting was on the strict enforcement of policies against gambling and drugs. Mr. Manarojkij highlighted two critical policies that must be rigorously followed: the prohibition of gambling and the crackdown on drug-related activities. He expressed concern over reports of gambling in certain areas that had not been communicated by the responsible village headmen or kamnans. He emphasized that any failure to report such activities would result in severe disciplinary action without the possibility of appeal. The District Chief reiterated that gambling is strictly prohibited under the policy of the Chonburi Governor and Thai law. Given the vast area of Banglamung District, he urged all village headmen and kamnans to be vigilant and proactive in monitoring and reporting any gambling activities. Frustrated by ongoing issues with foul odors and wastewater emissions, more than 100 villagers from Village 3, Nong Hiang Sub-district, and Village 10, Nong Prue Sub-district, gathered to protest in front of a plastic smelting factory in Chonburi Province. The villagers have been allegedly suffering from the factory’s emissions for many years. Despite a previous protest on July 24, 2024, which led to an inspection by officials from the Chonburi Provincial Industry Office, the Phanat Nikhom District Chief, and the Nong Hiang Sub-district Administrative Organization, the factory has allegedly continued its operations without resolving the issues. During the previous protest, officials concluded that the factory should close for renovations to address the problems. However, the factory remained open, and the issues persisted. In response, the villagers gathered once again to demand action. Rising Temperatures Threaten Thailand's Economy, Tourism, and Future A burnt field in Mae Fa Luang DIstrict and fire warning signs. Thailand emits less than 1% of global greenhouse gases but ranks among the top 10 countries most severely impacted by climate change. This stark reality poses significant concerns over the country’s economic stability and long-term viability of its tourism sector. A 2021 study by Swiss Re Institute projected that Thailand's GDP could plummet by 43.6% by 2048 due to temperature increases of up to 3.2°C. This would have a profound impact on a country heavily reliant on agriculture, tourism, and fisheries. The tourism industry, a cornerstone of Thailand's economy, faces substantial disruption. In the Andaman coast, shorter rainy seasons are expected, potentially extending the tourist season but exacerbating water shortages. Conversely, the Gulf of Thailand faces increased rainfall, leading to extended rainy seasons and more intense coastal erosion. In northern provinces, a reduction in cool days could lessen the appeal to domestic tourists who seek cooler climates. The risk to natural attractions is also escalating. National parks and forests could see higher wildfire risks due to drier and hotter conditions. The eastern region is forecasted to experience the highest temperatures nationwide. Meanwhile, Bangkok and its surrounding areas face severe flooding risks due to increased rainfall and obstructed water flows, putting communities and infrastructure at considerable risk. Thailand has committed to ambitious climate goals: achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 and net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065, as declared by then-PM Prayut Chan-o-cha at the 2021 UN Climate Conference in Glasgow. Yet, experts criticize the country’s approach, noting that plans remain vague and lack robust incentives for adaptation, reported Prof Mingsarn Kaosa-ard in The Nation. According to the Thailand Development Research Institute (TDRI), state policy clarity, continuity, and effective standard-setting are pivotal yet uncertain factors. Effective management requires serious enforcement, integration across sectors, and investment in environmental technology and infrastructure. Additionally, the unpredictability of climate effects varies by region, disproportionately affecting low-income groups who have fewer resources to relocate. Decentralised climate management, with local governments taking active roles, may offer more tailored and effective solutions. Ultimately, addressing global warming in Thailand calls for more than state policies; it demands significant shifts in consumer behaviour to drive market changes towards sustainability. Reducing energy consumption, proper waste disposal, and sustainable living practices are actionable steps that individuals can take immediately. With coordinated efforts from both governance and the public, Thailand can enhance its resilience to climate impacts and move closer to its environmental targets. Major Casino Firms Eye Investment in Thailand's New Complex Reference photo courtesy: Wikipedia At least five significant global casino companies have shown strong interest in investing in Thailand's upcoming entertainment complex project. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335138-major-casino-firms-eye-investment-in-thailands-new-complex/ -
At least five significant global casino companies have shown strong interest in investing in Thailand's upcoming entertainment complex project. This interest comes as Thailand's government pushes forward with the draft bill for the Entertainment Complex Act. If passed, the law will legalise casinos in the country. Las Vegas Sands Corporation, Wynn Resorts, Caesars Entertainment, MGM China Holdings Limited, and Hard Rock Cafe are the major players keen on entering the Thai market. They have already initiated discussions with various government agencies and aligned with major Thai firms to explore potential investment avenues. These investors appear willing to meet the conditions set by the proposed Act, which include requirements for operators to be publicly listed companies in Thailand with a minimum paid-up capital of 10 billion baht. The licenses, valid for 30 years and renewable for up to 10 more years, come at significant costs: an application fee of 100,000 baht, an initial license fee of 5 billion baht, and an annual fee of 1 billion baht. Interestingly, the rule mandating that only 10-20% of the complex's area be allocated to casino operations, while still expected to generate 80% of the total revenue, hasn't deterred these investors. They are also prepared to offer diverse entertainment options, meeting the requirement for at least four types of non-casino entertainment as listed in the Act's appendix. However, the government's plan to designate specific areas for these complexes through a royal decree has sparked some resistance. While the government suggests five locations across various regions, the investors prefer choosing their sites to align better with their business strategies. Las Vegas Sands, founded by Sheldon Adelson in 1988, is a global leader valued at over $30 billion. Wynn Resorts, established by Steve Wynn in 2002, is renowned for blending luxury with gambling. Caesars Entertainment, one of the world's largest entertainment firms, boasts over 55 properties worldwide. MGM China Holdings, formed in 2004, is a joint venture between MGM Resorts and Pansy Ho. Lastly, Hard Rock International, known for its cafes and casinos, was started in London in 1971. The approval of the Entertainment Complex Act will likely trigger a major transformation in Thailand's entertainment landscape, promising substantial economic growth and job creation. Thailand's Digital Wallet Scheme: The Future of Money Picture courtesy: NNT Thailand has launched a ground-breaking digital wallet stipend scheme for eligible citizens, offering a potential glimpse into the future of money management. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335137-thailands-digital-wallet-scheme-the-future-of-money/ -
Thailand has launched a ground-breaking digital wallet stipend scheme for eligible citizens, offering a potential glimpse into the future of money management. Chai Wacharonke, the Thai Government Spokesperson, highlighted how the program forms a pivotal part of a broader economic strategy aimed at boosting household consumption and GDP. This effort seeks to address short-term economic needs, albeit with critics pointing out that it doesn’t tackle deeper issues like low investment. The scheme caught international attention when the Financial Times published an in-depth analysis by Eswar Prasad. Prasad, an Indian-American economist and professor at Cornell University, drew comparisons between Thailand's initiative and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs) under consideration in various countries. Thailand's program integrates digital wallets, already popular among its citizens, into a government transfer plan aimed at low-income individuals. The funds are designed to be spent quickly and locally, with a six-month usage period that prohibits saving or misallocation. This direct approach promises to bypass traditional corruption channels by minimising the opportunities for fraud within government agencies. The article outlines several compelling advantages. Firstly, targeting low-income citizens ensures that the money is spent immediately rather than saved, creating a direct boost to economic activity. Secondly, by reducing opportunities for corruption through direct transfers, the scheme brings a welcomed transparency to government aid. Furthermore, by restricting the funds to be spent at local businesses, the program not only ensures that the money remains within the community but also supports small enterprises. This spreads the economic benefits widely and helps strengthen local economies. Prasad suggests that Thailand’s Digital Wallet scheme could pave the way for future adoption of CBDCs, potentially revolutionising the financial landscape. Such programs could serve as preliminary steps toward establishing a comprehensive digital economy, aligning with the Thai government's vision of becoming a Digital Economy Hub in the region. The initiative, while not without its critics, showcases a forward-thinking approach to economic management and may set a precedent for other nations considering similar digital transitions. The Thai government’s decision to encourage visa-free travel for Chinese nationals has certainly boosted their numbers. They are now estimated to be around 35,000 per day as flights increase from more cities in China. The overall volume is either back to pre-covid days or has even surpassed it. Although the boost to Thai tourism and to government coffers is obvious, there are other features about the move. Recent advertising hoardings in Bangkok and Rayong, written exclusively in the Chinese language, have been removed by Thai local authorities but clearly illustrate a new market trend. The Thai commerce ministry is complaining that Chinese-made domestic products are flooding Thai markets at a huge discount compared with Thai-made items. The popular Alibaba Group Holding e-commerce and retail technology company is basically run from China and offers knock-down prices. Meanwhile, there are frequent media tales in Thailand about Chinese citizens being abducted or forcibly repatriated, even as Thai immigration officers periodically swoop on Chinese illegal businesses and scam centers throughout the country. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) In a stunning show of support, members of the public have donated over 4.5 million baht to the People’s Party in a brief span of only four hours today. Around 7,700 individuals contributed toward the party, which is a revival of the recently court-dissolved Move Forward Party. All 143 MPs who were part of the Move Forward Party have registered themselves as active members of the new People’s Party to retain their legislative status. Today was the inaugural day for the People’s Party's appeal to the public for donations. They had initially set a target of 10 million baht to be reached over a month's time. Astonishingly, the record sum of 4.5 million baht was raised within just four hours, and there is optimism for further contributions as the day progresses. Hopes are high for reaching the 10 million baht target in a single day. Natthapong Ruengpanyawut, the leader of the People’s Party, mentioned that they aim to register a minimum of 100,000 members within a month. The People’s Party intends to uphold the political ideologies and flagship policies of the Move Forward Party. Their ultimate goal is ambitious: to become the largest elected party in the next general election, aiming for a majority with over 250 out of 500 MPs, in order to establish a one-party government. Today’s remarkable donation influx underscores the robust support and enthusiasm among the public for the People’s Party and its vision for Thailand's future. -- 2024-08-10 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Leader of People's Party, Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, left, with the party's members, talks to reporters during a press conference as they announce the formation of the new political party in Bangkok, Thailand, Friday, Aug. 9, 2024, two days after Thailand’s Move Forward party was dissolved by legal order. (AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit) Natthaphong Ruengpanyawut, elected leader of the newly reformed People’s Party, made a bold declaration today, stating the party’s aim to secure a majority in the 2027 general election and form a “government of changes." This announcement came following a meeting last night where Thailand's former Move Forward MPs and core members solidified the new party’s leadership and direction. Natthaphong, along with a five-member executive committee, was selected during this pivotal session. All 143 former Move Forward MPs have transitioned to the People’s Party, despite earlier speculations that one might not join. One of the People’s Party’s core aims under Natthaphong’s leadership is to continue the controversial attempts to amend the lèse majesté law. He asserted that the Constitutional Court does not preclude such amendments. However, he emphasized a more measured approach in the future. Amending this law is just one item from over 300 policies that were part of the Move Forward party’s agenda. Natthaphong pointed out that the previous efforts, spanning from the Future Forward to the Move Forward party, included introducing more than 60 draft bills to parliament. These drafts focused on decentralisation of powers, labour protection, and land rights—key issues the party believes are crucial for the country’s progress. In terms of alliances, Natthaphong stated that while the People’s Party is open to discussions with other parties regarding cabinet positions, any cooperation would not come at the expense of the party’s ideology or the public interest. The party’s immediate goal is to ramp up its membership base. Starting tomorrow, a membership and fund-raising campaign will commence, targeting an initial 100,000 members and, ultimately, aiming for 10 million. The party’s name, "People’s," was chosen to underscore their commitment to being a party for and by the people, rooted in democratic principles. The party’s logo, an inverted triangle, symbolises this vision. Alongside Natthaphong, the executive committee includes Sarayuth Jailak as secretary-general, Nutthawut Buaprathum as party registrar, Chutima Kotchapan as treasury official, and Phicharn Chaowapatanawong. -- 2024-08-10 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Pattaya — The iconic “secret beach” of Pattaya was recently seen covered in heaps of garbage, prompting nearby residents to call for immediate action from authorities. Residents complained to local media about trash washing up on a so-called hidden part of Pattaya beach, located near Soi Na Kluea 18. The beach was littered with plastic bags, beer bottles, and other debris. Residents said this mess is tarnishing the beach’s appeal, which was previously popular among both Thai and international visitors for its clear waters and proximity to nearby hotels and condos. British tourist missing after trip to Bangkok found safe in Finland by Petch Petpailin Photo via MyLocal Lincolnshire A British tourist who went missing after a trip to Bangkok has been found safe and well according to his older sister. The British man, Simon Robinson, is in Helsinki, Finland. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1335129-british-tourist-missing-after-trip-to-bangkok-found-safe-in-finland/ -
A British tourist who went missing after a trip to Bangkok has been found safe and well according to his older sister. The British man, Simon Robinson, is in Helsinki, Finland. The 27 year old British man was on holiday in Bangkok with friends and scheduled to return home to Boston in Lincolnshire on August 3. He had earlier informed his girlfriend of an early return, saying he would board a return flight on July 27. However, Robinson did not follow his schedule and lost contact with his family, girlfriend, and friends from July 26. He did not get in touch with his family, even on his 27th birthday at the end of July. Following the tracking of his phone signal, Robinson was found to be in Bangkok, near Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Robinson’s older sister, Sarah Robinson Dale, later reported to the British press that her brother had been on Finnair flight AY142, travelling from Bangkok to Finland. The sister told the media that she would contact the authorities about his destination country to locate her brother as soon as possible. Fortunately, Dale confirmed yesterday, August 8, that Robinson finally called her and apologised for the loss of contact. He also apologised for causing everyone concern. Dale also expressed her appreciation to everyone who helped by sharing the missing person’s post and supporting her in the search for her brother. “Simon has called me. He is okay and deeply sorry for worrying everyone. Thank you to everyone who has shared and supported us.” Dale and Robinson have not yet clarified the issue that prevented Robinson from contacting his loved ones but this latest announcement happily confirms that Robinson is safe. UPDATE 1: Missing Brit from Bangkok airport boarded flight to Finland The baffling disappearance of a British tourist hours before his flight from Bangkok has taken a twist: his sister insists he did board a plane. Sarah Robinson-Dale revealed that her brother, 27 year old Simon Robinson, boarded a flight to Helsinki, Finland. This revelation has shifted the search a staggering 5,000 miles from Southeast Asia to the Arctic Circle. Initially, Robinson was feared to have vanished in Bangkok, leaving his family distraught and believing he never boarded his July 26 flight home, despite his phone pinging near the airport minutes before departure. “We have received confirmation that Simon did board the flight on July 26. A massive thank you to everyone who shared and to the kind people who found this information, as police on both sides haven’t done anything. I am waiting for a call back from the police and embassy in Helsinki.” South Yorkshire Police confirmed Robinson’s case was reported to them but hadn’t issued their own missing person’s appeal. The missing Brit’s sister mentioned that the information about him leaving Thailand emerged despite UK police confirming he didn’t. The family’s new theory was prompted by a man claiming to be a Thai immigration officer, who informed them Robinson was on flight AY142 – Finnair’s Bangkok-Helsinki route. Dale confirmed her brother jetted off to Finland but did not reveal the source of her confirmation. Finnair declined to provide customer information when The Sun requested verification of Robinson’s flight details. Robinson, from Skegness, Lincolnshire, initially flew to Thailand on July 22 and was not due home until August 3. However, on July 26, he called his girlfriend to announce he was flying home early. He has not been heard from since. The UK Foreign Office stated it stands ready to assist any Brit abroad but refrained from commenting on Simon’s case. Interpol also declined to comment, citing the need for special circumstances or approval from the missing person’s country, reported The Sun UK. ORIGINAL STORY: Search for British tourist who disappeared at Bangkok airport A 27 year old British tourist embarked on a dream holiday to Thailand but has mysteriously vanished, leaving his loved ones in a state of despair. Simon Robinson jetted off to Thailand on July 22, planning to soak up the Sun until August 3. However, just days into his trip, he phoned his girlfriend on July 26, announcing his early return. That call was the last anyone heard from him. According to The Lincolnite, Robinson, who spends much of his time in Boston, Lincolnshire, UK, never boarded his flight despite his phone pinging near Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi International Airport. Since that fateful call, his phone has been switched off, and his whereabouts remain unknown. Friends and family are now frantically raising awareness to initiate a search effort. South Yorkshire police have confirmed that Simon’s case has been reported, though they have not launched a missing persons appeal. The Foreign Office has stated it is ready to assist any British national abroad. In a heartfelt Facebook post, the missing Brit’s sister, Sarah Robinson Dale, expressed her anguish. “I am going out of my mind here. I am receiving hundreds of messages and don’t have time to reply to them all. I am thankful for everyone’s support and sharing.” Dale urged anyone in Bangkok to contact the police if they see her brother and encouraged people in other countries to keep sharing his picture. “As soon as I have any information, I will update on here. Forever grateful, let’s get Simon home.” Dale was due to speak with the British embassy in Thailand yesterday. Robinson’s friend, Sam Champ, also took to social media to spread the word. “One of my dear friends has gone missing in Bangkok, he hasn’t been heard from since July 26. He was supposed to board a flight that day but he didn’t show up. It was his 27th birthday yesterday and everyone is growing very concerned. He has been reported as a missing person.” Champ attached a picture of his friend, urging people in Bangkok and other parts of Thailand to share the post to help locate his friend, reported The Sun UK. by Petch Petpailin Photo via MyLocal Lincolnshire Source: The Thaiger 2024-08-10 - Cigna offers a variety of health insurance plans designed to meet the minimum requirement for medical treatment coverage, with benefits reaching up to THB 3 million. Norwegian man falls to his death from 16th floor of Pattaya condo by Petch Petpailin Photo via Amarin TV A Norwegian man allegedly committed suicide by jumping from the 16th floor of his condominium in Pattaya yesterday, shocking his Thai wife, who was cooking in the kitchen. The wife contacted officers from Mueang Pattaya Police Station to report the death of her husband, 88 year old Jan Asbjorn Hauge, at their condominium in the Jomtien neighbourhood of Pattaya. The incident occurred at approximately 3.30pm yesterday, August 8. Police reported that Hauge allegedly jumped from the balcony of his room on the 16th floor. His body fell onto the roof of a bar on the third floor. Sawang Boriboon Dham Rescue team was called to retrieve the body from the roof. Rescuers faced difficulties during the operation and had to use a boom lift to access the third-floor roof. Police stated that there were no signs of physical altercation or struggle, either on Hauge’s body or in the room he shared with his wife. Hauge’s wife told the police that they had not argued and Hauge had never mentioned anything about suicide. According to her, Hauge had a kidney disease and was very quiet on the day of the incident. She believes he seized the opportunity while she was cooking to take his own life. The wife said she was shocked when she saw Hauge’s body on the roof of the bar. She had to take some time to compose herself before reporting the matter to the police. Leaping from a condo in Pattaya has become a thing over the past few years with locals insensitively calling it “The Pattaya Flying Club.” In a related report, a Thai mother and her daughter committed suicide in their home in Pattaya in July. The mother had been suffering from lung cancer, while her daughter had been battling autoimmune diseases. It is believed they ended their lives due to the distress caused by their illnesses. Multiple suicide cases have been reported in Pattaya recently, including the deaths of a Chinese man in February, a Czech man in March, a Thai-American man in April, and a British, Russian, and Thai man in June. If you or anyone you know is in emotional distress, please contact the Samaritans of Thailand 24-hour hotline: 02 713 6791 (English), 02 713 6793 (Thai), or the Thai Mental Health Hotline at 1323 (Thai).
