Man dies after pickup veers off Samut Songkhram road
webfact posted a topic in Central Thailand News
A 34 year old man tragically lost his life after his pickup truck veered off the road and crashed into a barricade, ejecting him through the rear window. The accident happened at around 2.30am today, June 14, on Samut Songkhram-Bang Phae Road, heading towards Mae Klong. Police Lieutenant Pongporn Taowarod, Deputy Inspector at Amphawa Police Station, was alerted to the incident and arrived at the scene with a medical team from Amphawa Hospital and rescue workers from the Samutratchen Foundation. At the scene, a grey four-door pickup truck with Bangkok licence plates was found in a roadside ditch, with a metal barricade impaled through the front of the vehicle and out the rear window. The body of the driver, Nutchayapong, lay next to a nearby house. He had severe head injuries and broken limbs, with bone fragments scattered around. An eyewitness, 43 year old Phinyo Phumra, recounted that he was watching television when he heard a loud noise. Upon investigating, he discovered the pickup truck had lost control and crashed, with the driver ejected from the vehicle and landing outside his house. Phinyo was shocked and immediately called the authorities. Phinyo described the moment he heard the crash. “I was watching TV when I suddenly heard a loud noise. I rushed out and saw the pickup truck had veered off the road and crashed. The driver was thrown out and landed near my house. It was shocking.” Initial investigations suggest that Nutchayapong was driving on a dark road where streetlights were out over a long stretch. He may have been unfamiliar with the road or fell asleep at the wheel, causing him to lose control and crash. The Thai rescue services transferred the body to Somdet Phra Phutthaloetla Hospital for an autopsy and to facilitate the return of the body to his family. Further investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the accident, reported KhaoSod. Koh Samui’s tourism renaissance: An island reawakens by Bill Barnett Koh Samui, Thailand’s renowned resort island, is experiencing a remarkable revival in tourism. Koh Samui, Thailand’s renowned resort island, is experiencing a remarkable revival in tourism. The island has witnessed a 69% year-on-year increase in visitor numbers during the first four months of 2024, driven by an influx of domestic tourists, the opening of new international markets, and improved air connectivity. In 2023, Samui hosted 3,541,821 visitors, a balanced mix of domestic and international travellers. This is a notable shift from the pre-COVID era, which saw a higher number of overseas tourists. The island’s accessibility—via planes, ferries, and automobiles—played a significant role, as many visitors arrived by ferry from the mainland. The surge in domestic tourism has been crucial for the island’s recovery. The C9 Hotelworks Samui Hotel & Tourism Market Review documents that the number of registered hotel guests exceeded 2019 levels by 1.5 times. While airport arrivals reached 94% of pre-pandemic levels with 1,208,364 passengers, ferry arrivals made up the difference. International tourism dynamics have also evolved. Chinese tourists, once a major market, now account for less than 4% of visitors. This gap has been filled by travellers from Europe, the US, and a resurgent Israeli market, resulting in longer stays on the island. Koh Samui’s tourism was historically influenced by its limited access, primarily through Bangkok Airways, which led to higher travel costs. However, this exclusivity attracted affluent tourists, maintaining the island’s status as a premium beach destination. Looking forward, Koh Samui’s tourism infrastructure is set to expand. Plans to upgrade Samui International Airport and develop a cruise terminal aim to increase visitor numbers. New flight routes, including those by Scoot Airlines from Singapore, are expected to attract more upscale regional travellers. Since 2017, the island’s hotel supply has grown steadily, reaching 630 establishments with 24,107 keys by 2023. Most new properties are boutique-scale, concentrated in the northern region, particularly Bophut. Branded hotels account for 69% of the development pipeline. Tourism peaks in Koh Samui during the high season, with visitor numbers 1.5 to 2 times higher than in the low season. International travellers typically visit during winter and summer holidays, while the domestic market peaks in August, with additional rises in February and April for the Lunar New Year and Songkran festivals. The Thai government is positioning Samui as a luxury destination, with plans to build a cruise terminal through a public-private partnership. This initiative aims to attract high-end tourists and further differentiate the island from other resort areas in Thailand. As 2024 progresses, Koh Samui is set to solidify its reputation as a premier luxury destination. This resurgence signals an exciting new chapter for the island, promising growth and a dynamic future in the global tourism landscape. The Thai government issued a warning for heavy rain and potential flash floods from June 15 to June 19, due to monsoons and increased weather activity. The Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are expected to experience high waves, urging fishermen to avoid navigating stormy areas. Deputy Spokesperson for the Prime Minister’s Office, Karom Polpornklang, alerted the public to the dangers associated with the upcoming weather conditions. A monsoon trough is forecasted to pass over the upper northern and northeastern regions of Thailand, extending into a low-pressure area in northern Vietnam and the Gulf of Tonkin. Combined with a moderate southwest monsoon covering the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand, the country’s rainfall is expected to increase significantly. Heavy rainfall is anticipated in certain areas, particularly in the eastern region. The upper Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand are expected to experience moderate wind and waves, with the upper Andaman Sea seeing waves up to two metres high. The Gulf of Thailand and the lower Andaman Sea will have waves between one to two metres. In areas with thunderstorms, waves could exceed 2 metres. Fishermen in the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea have been urged to navigate carefully, especially avoiding regions with thunderstorms. Residents in these areas should remain vigilant for heavy rainfall and accumulated precipitation, which could lead to sudden flooding, flash floods and landslides. People living near hill slopes, watercourses, and low-lying areas in the northern and eastern regions are advised to be particularly cautious. Increased caution is also recommended for those travelling through stormy areas. The government’s warning serves as a crucial reminder for both residents and fishermen to prepare and exercise caution during this period of severe weather. By staying informed and taking appropriate precautions, the potential risks associated with these weather conditions can be mitigated, reported KhaoSod. by Ryan Turner Image: Freepik Source: The Thaiger 2024-06-14 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Picture courtesy: Thai Rath In a tragic incident in Samut Prakan, Thailand, a young firefighter, overwhelmed by job stress, fatally stabbed one of his drinking companions and seriously injured three others after what began as a social gathering. At approximately 4:30 pm on June 13, 2024, Pol. Col. Wiroj Tasso, superintendent of the Samrong Nuea Police Station, was alerted to a violent altercation at house number 982, Soi Dan Samrong 45/1, Srinakarin Road. He quickly responded with his team and emergency medical staff from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation. The scene was chaotic. Outside a single-story house, near a marble table in the parking lot, they found Mr. Thitipan Jaturanon, 42, lying lifeless with a critical knife wound near his left ear. Despite efforts to save him, Thitipan succumbed to his injuries. Alongside him, three others were severely injured: Mr. Panuwat Puthakul, 25, with three stomach stab wounds; Mr. Narubet Puthakul, 30, with a chest wound; and Mr. Warawut Bangpra, 25, who suffered a cut to his left arm. The attacker, Mr. Worachit On-uan, a 26-year-old firefighter, was found at the scene with the weapon, a kitchen knife. Worachit, deeply agitated and tearful, did not resist arrest. Witnesses reported that the incident erupted during a drinking session at Worachit's house. The atmosphere grew tense as the group began taunting Worachit about his work. Under immense pressure from his firefighting job of just one month, Worachit lost control. He initially stabbed Thitipan before turning on the others. Afterward, he retreated to his home, where he awaited police arrival. Pol. Col. Wiroj Tasso mentioned that Worachit's motive remains under investigation, as he is too distressed to provide a comprehensive account. Nevertheless, it is evident that workplace stress played a significant role. Neighbors described Worachit as typically mild-mannered and well-liked, making this violent outburst particularly shocking. This tragic event underscores the importance of addressing mental health concerns, especially in high-pressure jobs like firefighting. Authorities are determined to investigate the incident thoroughly. -- 2024-06-14 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Monk Leads Project to Build Elephant Shelter in Chiang Mai
webfact posted a topic in Chiang Mai News
Renowned monk Phra Kru Odd is spearheading a vital initiative to construct a shelter for the elephants of the Saen family in Chiang Mai. This project, aimed at protecting the elephants from harsh weather, is expected to cost 1 million baht and take one year to complete. Phra Kru Odd, affiliated with Wat Chedi Luang in Mueang District, Chiang Mai, recently visited Mae Taeng District to prepare the site for the construction of a standard elephant shelter. The planned structure will be 13 meters wide and 60 meters long, providing a haven for over 10 elephants. This initiative seeks to offer the elephants a comfortable environment, shielding them from the sun and rain. The Saen family includes notable elephants like Plai Saen Luang, Plai Saen Rak, Plai Saen Phrai, Plai Saen Krai, and Phang Saen Duean. These elephants have found refuge in Mae Taeng and will greatly benefit from the new shelter. “This project is crucial as it ensures the well-being of these magnificent creatures by providing them with a protective shelter,” emphasised Phra Kru Odd. The construction of the elephant shelter, anticipated to take about a year, will need a budget of approximately 1 million baht. The community and elephant enthusiasts are encouraged to contribute to this noble cause, ensuring these rescued elephants live in comfort and safety. “We need all the support we can get to make this project a reality. It’s not just about building a shelter; it’s about giving these elephants a better quality of life,” Phra Kru Odd added. The shelter will offer much-needed protection from the elements, improving the elephants' overall health and well-being, as reported by KhaoSod. In related news, as Thailand marks the country’s National Elephant Day, authorities are rolling out ambitious plans to safeguard the majestic creatures and mitigate human-elephant conflicts. With a combination of innovation, community involvement, and legislative actions, the nation aims to secure the future of both wild and domesticated elephants. Bangkok’s local authority the BMA will raid unauthorised pet markets throughout the city to prevent similar incidents following Tuesday's blaze at Chatuchak market that killed an estimated 5000 animals. Bangkok’s governor met with an animal protection network yesterday and vowed to investigate other pet markets, adding that every pet store is now required to have 2 permits, one from the BMA and another from the department of livestock. The minister for transport announced that a 20-baht cap on train fares will be rolled out across Bangkok's rail network by March 2026. The minister said the 20 baht fare will be introduced to ensure the city's rail network is accessible to all residents. Consumer protection officers seized 18 million baht worth of counterfeit powdered milk products smuggled from Vietnam and arrested six workers from Myanmar and Laos during a raid on a warehouse in Samut Prakan. They were arrested and charged with selling unregistered products and working without work permits. Around 20,000 cans of powdered milk and other food supplements were seized. A Thai Army army colonel has been transferred and placed under an investigation after he allegedly charged each new conscript, 500 baht per month to clean and empty septic tanks. The Army issued a statement claiming that no army units demand utility fees from conscripts. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin condemned the deductions as unacceptable and emphasized the need to encourage voluntary military service. Around the region. Army Lags in Deploying Drones Along Thai-Myanmar Border Picture source: RTA via Defense Studies The Thai army is noticeably lagging in its deployment of drones along the Thai-Myanmar border, House Armed Services Committee Chair and Move Forward MP, Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, announced yesterday. The Thai army is noticeably lagging in its deployment of drones along the Thai-Myanmar border, House Armed Services Committee Chair and Move Forward MP, Wiroj Lakkhanaadisorn, announced yesterday. During a critical briefing on June 13th, Wiroj expressed concerns that the army's drone capability is falling behind in confronting modern-day threats in Thailand’s western border areas. Highlighting the urgency, he noted that while the army plans to procure an additional fleet of 10 drones for fiscal 2025, this number is insufficient to counteract current security threats. Wiroj pointed out that both Myanmar’s Tatmadaw troops and various armed ethnic groups operating in the region already employ advanced drone technology. These include attack drones armed with missiles and surveillance drones, posing significant challenges to Thai security forces, who currently rely solely on surveillance drones. Expressing frustration, Wiroj stated, "The Thai army does not possess any attack drones and faces immense difficulties due to the variety of drones it uses from different countries, such as Israel, Turkey, and China, which complicates tactical coordination during field missions." Moreover, Wiroj revealed that drug and human traffickers in the border areas are increasingly using drones to locate authorities, further complicating the security situation. Equally troubling is the lack of anti-drone weapons within the army’s current arsenal. This shortage leaves gaps in the army's capability to neutralize hostile drones, hence increasing their vulnerability. In addition, Wiroj mentioned funding concerns, noting that the 40 million baht allocated for repairing the army's wheeled personnel carriers in fiscal 2025 is grossly inadequate. These rough-terrain combat vehicles are crucial for maintaining security along the expansive 2,400-kilometre Thai-Myanmar border. Wiroj's revelations paint a troubling picture of the Thai army’s preparedness and highlight the growing need for technological enhancement and funding to address evolving security challenges in the region. Sattahip — A cannabis shop in Sattahip district, Chonburi province, was vandalized twice by masked youths, with the second incident involving possible gunfire, according to the shop owner. On June 12th, 2024, a local reporter was notified by Mr. Sakda Niempai, a 29-year-old owner of a cannabis shop in Sattahip, that a group of teenagers had vandalized his shop located in front of the Bang Saray Night Market twice. The CCTV cameras clearly captured the incidents, and Mr. Sakda had already filed a report with Sattahip police. According to Mr. Sakda, the first incident occurred about three days ago, when a group of teenagers arrived at his shop in a sedan and got out with a baseball bat. The group then threatened the shop owner in the middle of the street and challenged him to come out to face them. The CCTV cameras clearly captured the suspects’ faces, but they left without causing any damage, so Mr. Sakda did not file a police report at that time. Election Shocker: Personal Data of 23,000 Candidates Exposed
webfact posted a topic in Thailand News
In an alarming incident, the Election Commission (EC) inadvertently revealed the national ID numbers of over 23,000 candidates who advanced to district-level senatorial elections. The Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC)’s Eagle Eye Centre highlighted the breach, pointing out a clear violation of personal data protection laws. The breach surfaced when the names of 23,645 candidates were published via the Line app, accompanied by Microsoft Excel files containing sensitive personal details. Kengkart Kup-akkarapinyo and Wanna Horkanya, two candidates affected by the leak, promptly lodged a formal petition demanding a transparent investigation. They addressed their concerns directly to EC Chairman Ittiporn Boonpracong, urging immediate measures to mitigate potential damages and provide clarity on how such a breach occurred. The PDPC, operating under the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry, is tasked with enforcing the PDPC Act that aims to protect sensitive personal data. This incident has prompted the PDPC to call on social media users not to circulate the leaked information further, warning about the risk of scams and identity theft. Despite diligent monitoring between November and May, where they surveilled 26,301 government agencies and achieved a significant reduction in accidental data breaches from 31.40% to 1.21%, this recent event underscores the persistent vulnerabilities in data security frameworks. The EC’s predicament is compounded by a ruling from the Constitutional Court, compelling them to present their list of witnesses and evidence in a consequential case against the Move Forward Party (MFP) by June 18. Today, the nine-judge bench of the Constitutional Court commenced deliberations over the EC’s petition to dissolve MFP, already met with a robust written defence by the party on June 4. Further unsettling the political landscape, Thailand's Constitutional Court decided in an 8-1 vote to review petitions challenging key elements of the law overseeing the election of the nation’s 200 new senators. This decision raises significant queries regarding the integrity and forthcoming procedures of the senatorial elections. PALANG PRACHARATH SECRETARY-GENERAL Thammanat Prompao today (June 13) downplayed criticism that the relationship between the core coalition partner Pheu Thai and his own party has been strained lately. Following comments earlier made by de facto Pheu Thai boss Thaksin Shinawatra which had apparently taken Palang Pracharath leader Prawit Wongsawat to task, Thammanat said he simply viewed it as an “unintended” remark. Whilst responding to reporters’ questions, Thaksin had accused Prawit of standing behind a hush-hush move of 40 senators who had earlier filed an impeachment lawsuit against Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to the Constitutional Court. Most of those senior lawmakers were viewed as personally loyal to former prime minister/de facto Ruam Thai Sang Chart boss Prayut Chan-o-cha and the Palang Pracharath leader.
