  4. Mastercard's latest "Travel Trends 2024: Breaking Boundaries" report has positioned Bangkok in the prestigious list of top 10 summer vacation destinations globally. This accolade is based on an extensive analysis of Mastercard transaction data from 74 markets, highlighting Bangkok's growing appeal to international travellers over the coming months. During a recent online press conference, David Mann, Mastercard's Chief Economist for Asia Pacific, shared optimistic insights about Thailand's tourism sector. "Thailand's tourism is nearly back to full strength, with visitor numbers just 7% shy of pre-pandemic levels. Given its popularity in the Asia Pacific region, we anticipate that Thailand will see a full recovery by 2024," said Mann. The report underscores Bangkok's role as a frontrunner in tourism, especially within the South Asia and Middle East regions. The city sees a significant influx of tourists from China and Malaysia. Since 2019, inbound flight traffic from South Asia and the ASEAN region has surged by almost 20%, reflecting a robust rebound in travel demand. Adding to Bangkok's allure is its reputation as a favourite for extended stays. This trend is driven by the city's affordability and favourable exchange rates, attracting visitors eager to immerse themselves in the local culture. Extended stays often translate to increased spending, providing a boost to the local economy. Thailand's position in the global travel landscape looks promising, with compelling reasons for tourists to visit. As the country edges closer to a full recovery, Bangkok stands out as a beacon, drawing travellers to its dynamic blend of traditional charm and modern attractions. 6. The Thai government has unveiled an ambitious plan to generate 7.5 billion baht this year by positioning Thailand as a leading destination for international film productions. This initiative was prominently promoted at the Cannes Film Festival in France, where the country’s achievements in attracting foreign film projects were showcased. Permanent Secretary for Tourism and Sports, Arrun Boonchai, explained that various government departments have been working diligently to enhance Thailand’s film industry. This sector is seen as a strategic tool to bolster the tourism industry. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has also emphasised the role of cinema in cultural diplomacy and economic development. Thailand's draw for filmmakers lies largely in its picturesque tourist spots, which have featured in numerous international films and TV series in recent years. To make the country even more appealing, Thailand offers financial incentives, including a cashback scheme on production costs that has recently increased from 15% to 20%. These incentives have proven effective, with the economic value of the film industry in Thailand rising from approximately 3.1 billion baht in 2017 to about 6.7 billion baht last year. Arrun highlighted that beyond direct financial gains, the film industry brings broader economic benefits. These include job creation in related sectors and increased tourism in lesser-known locations. Noteworthy productions filmed in Thailand include “The Meg 2,” “The Creator,” and the hit TV series “The White Lotus,” which stars Thai K-pop sensation Lalisa Manoban. The government aims that these successful productions will further elevate Thailand’s status as a premier film production hub, ultimately achieving the target of 7.5 billion baht. By establishing itself as a top choice for international filmmakers, Thailand hopes to see continued growth in both the cultural and economic landscapes. 8. Pattaya Suspends Electric Scooter Rentals Amid Legal Concerns Picture courtesy: The Pattaya News An electric scooter rental company in Pattaya has been instructed by city officials and police to temporarily halt operations amid concerns about compliance with Thai traffic laws. On October 10th, Pattaya authorities visited Gogo Transtech Co., Ltd., following complaints from residents questioning the legality of the rental electric scooters on public roads. The scooters, blue in colour, have sparked worries about safety and legal requirements. During the inspection, officials found numerous scooters parked at the firm’s headquarters. Ms. Nee, an administrative officer for Gogo Transtech, stated that the scooters are electric bicycles with a max speed of 25 kilometres per hour. She noted their eco-friendliness and safety features, such as shutting down if taken outside designated areas. Ms. Nee also elaborated on the rental model: 3 baht for the first 5 kilometres, then 5 baht per additional kilometre, accessed via a mobile app. The scooters have been popular in Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Concerns primarily focus on whether the scooters meet legal standards for operation on public roads. Pattaya officials, along with tourist and immigration police, convened a meeting to discuss these issues. Representatives from various agencies, including Banglamung District and Pattaya City, participated. The meeting centred on the legalities of the business registration and rental operations. Authorities reached out to the Banglamung District Transportation Office for clarity on licensing, although the classification of these vehicles under Thai law remains uncertain. Gogo Transtech’s owner, Mr. Chan Pusam, acknowledged the potential legal challenges and expressed a willingness to adapt to regulations. He emphasised that the company has been operating legally for two years in Thailand and provides accident insurance up to 500,000 baht for riders. Pattaya officials decided to suspend Gogo Transtech’s services pending further clarification. A subsequent meeting is scheduled for October 13th to address the outstanding legal concerns. -- 2024-05-20 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

  14. Late last week in Patong, local residents reported a disruptive foreigner causing a significant public disturbance, prompting an immediate police response. The incident took place in front of a restaurant along Taweewong Road, close to the well-known Dolphin Roundabout. On arriving at the scene, Patong Police found the man, described as a Caucasian foreigner, highly intoxicated and disruptive. According to reports, he was disturbing both locals and tourists, displaying aggressive and erratic behaviour. Attempts to calm him down proved futile as he resisted arrest and even tried to physically fight the officers. Despite his resistance, the officers managed to subdue him and transported him to Patong Police Station. He is currently facing charges related to public intoxication and causing a public disturbance. The police have yet to release the suspect's name, age, or nationality, which has heightened interest in the incident. Local authorities noted that the man was too intoxicated to communicate properly. Furthermore, he had no form of identification on him and was described as extremely uncooperative, which complicates the investigation. The incident has raised concerns about the behaviour of some tourists and the impact on local communities. It underscores the ongoing challenge of maintaining public order in popular tourist destinations like Patong. As the police continue their investigations, local residents and business owners hope that such disturbances can be minimised to maintain the area’s reputation as a safe and enjoyable place for both tourists and locals alike. Updates on the foreigner's identity and any further legal action will be awaited with keen interest. For now, the incident serves as a stark reminder of the responsibilities that come with enjoying nightlife and public spaces, especially in foreign lands. 16. A woman in Korat experienced a year-long ordeal with strange phone calls after purchasing a SIM card from a shopping mall, leading her to ultimately cancel the number. The calls were traced back to a number written on a school desk. A story shared by the Facebook fan page ผู้บริโภค recounts the troubles faced by a woman who received numerous nuisance calls from unknown numbers over the course of a year. After buying a SIM card from a mobile service provider’s outlet within a shopping mall, she began to experience these disturbances. “This is what is known as a recycled number. This case became unbearable for the owner, who eventually had to cancel it.” The woman posted a photo of the phone number written on a school desk and shared her frustration: “Hello, this post isn’t about food, but I need help finding an answer to my problem. I bought a SIM card from a certain mobile operator’s centre in a mall. I have used it for a very long time, over a year. Throughout this period, I have received many strange calls. Some callers said they were trying to reach their mothers but somehow connected to my number. Others were looking for friends who had given them this number a long time ago. Some said they were trying to contact relatives but were redirected to my number. “Recently, a student prank-called me, and when I asked where they got my number, they said it was written on a desk. This is very puzzling. I must emphasise that I bought the SIM card along with the phone from a mall and have never shared my number with anyone except delivery services when ordering through apps.” The woman, based in Korat, was particularly perplexed as the student who prank-called her saw the number written on a desk in Saraburi, a different province altogether. The incident has highlighted potential privacy and logistical issues associated with recycled numbers, urging providers to consider stricter policies for reissuing used numbers. 18. A recent National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA) poll reveals that most Thais support plans to reclassify marijuana as an illegal drug, though opinions on its benefits vary. Conducted from May 14 to May 15, the NIDA poll surveyed 1,310 individuals aged 15 and over from various backgrounds. The results were somewhat mixed on how respondents view cannabis. Over half, 53.74%, acknowledge marijuana as an illicit narcotic but believe it has medical benefits. Another 33.59% see it as a narcotic with no benefits at all, while 11.60% do not consider it illegal, and 1.07% were unsure. When asked about the government's intention to reclassify marijuana as illegal, 60.38% completely agreed, and 15.27% moderately agreed. Conversely, 14.50% strongly disagreed, 8.93% moderately disagreed, and 0.92% were uncertain or uninterested. On the broader cannabis policy, 74.58% believed it is aimed at medical purposes and treating illnesses. Meanwhile, 19.39% argued the government should not back any cannabis-related policies. About 10.53% felt the policy encourages legal cannabis product development, and 7.40% viewed it as a means to boost incomes. A smaller portion, 3.21%, saw it promoting recreational use, and 0.99% were unsure or indifferent. This poll comes in light of Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul's recent remarks on the cannabis debate. He expressed support for regulated use, aligning with the government's existing policy allowing cannabis for medical, economic, and research purposes. Thailand's Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin echoed a more cautious approach in a France 24 interview, suggesting reclassification due to perceived harmful effects on Thai society, despite any economic benefits. The differing opinions reflect the complexity of the cannabis issue in Thailand, as the nation grapples with balancing public health and economic opportunities. 20. Visakha Bucha Day, also called Vesak, will be celebrated on May 22 in Thailand, marking a significant public holiday. On this highly revered Buddhist day, Thai law mandates a ban on selling all types of alcoholic beverages in convenience stores and entertainment venues. Vesak Day holds immense spiritual importance in Thailand as it commemorates three major events in the Buddha’s life: his birth, enlightenment, and passing away. These events all occurred on the same day, which is the full moon of the sixth lunar month. On this day, Buddhists engage in various religious activities like making merit, listening to sermons, and worshipping to promote peace and happiness. In light of the day's sacred nature, the Prime Minister’s Office has strict mandates against alcohol sales. According to the Designation of Prohibited Days for Alcohol Sales 2015, the regulation clearly states: "No one is allowed to sell alcoholic beverages on Makha Bucha Day, Visakha Bucha Day, Asalha Bucha Day, the Beginning of Buddhist Lent Day, and the End of Buddhist Lent Day, except for duty-free shops within international airport terminals." Additionally, the Alcohol Control Act of 2008, Section 32, supports these restrictions, prohibiting the advertisement or display of alcoholic beverage names or trademarks in any manner that promotes drinking, directly or indirectly. On Vesak Day, the alcohol sale ban is enforced from midnight to midnight. Due to this restriction, consuming alcohol on Vesak Day is viewed as inappropriate, and selling it is illegal, except in specified areas like duty-free shops at international airports. Aside from the alcohol ban, several institutions, including banks, government offices, and some private businesses will be closed for the day. This observance underscores the day's significance, inviting everyone to respect its sanctity by adhering to these laws.
