A determined British mother has relocated her family to Thailand to escape the worsening cost of living crisis in Britain. Jessica Ward, originally from Congleton in Cheshire, took the bold step with her partner and young daughter, Cece, seeking a more affordable and stress-free life abroad. Jessica, her partner, and Cece moved to Thailand in January 2024, captivated by the country's warm climate and lower living costs. The move was driven by a combination of soaring energy bills, heightened inflation, and a surge in mental health issues linked to the UK government's controversial 'net-zero' climate policies. These policies, amidst the backdrop of geopolitical instability and supply chain disruptions, contributed significantly to the financial strain felt by many UK households. The family quickly adapted to their new life in Thailand, where Cece is now enrolled in preschool, and they reside comfortably in a sun-drenched villa. Jessica has applied for a visa with the Thai Immigration Bureau, signalling their intent to make this a long-term move. Jessica told GB News that the decision to relocate was spurred by the alarming cost of living back home. She noted that their energy bills had become untenable, driven up by stringent government policies aimed at reducing carbon emissions. Despite widespread public backlash, these measures had been pushed through by the UK's two-party political system, leaving many families like Jessica's grappling with financial hardship. The move to Thailand has provided the Ward family with a fresh start, free from the economic pressures weighing heavily on many Britons. Jessica mentioned that other UK families are also considering similar relocations, as the appeal of a more affordable and relaxed lifestyle becomes increasingly attractive in light of ongoing financial challenges at home. In summary, Jessica Ward's relocation to Thailand - amidst Britain's economic turmoil - exemplifies a growing trend among UK families seeking refuge from the harsh realities of the current cost of living crisis. -- 2024-05-20 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Prime Minister of Thailand, Srettha Thavisin, left, shaking hands with Red Bull team principal Christian Horner before the Italy's Emilia Romagna Formula One Grand Prix race at the Dino and Enzo Ferrari racetrack in Imola, Italy, Sunday, May 19, 2024. (AP Photo/Luca Bruno, Pool) In a dramatic turn of events, the Constitutional Court is set to rule on a petition seeking the impeachment of Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin and Prime Minister's Office Minister Pichit Chuenban this Thursday. The move follows accusations of constitutional violations and breaches of political ethics. The petition, filed by 40 senators, claims Srettha violated the constitution by appointing Pichit, previously jailed for contempt of court, as a minister. If the court accepts the petition, both Srettha and Pichit will be suspended from their duties until the court reaches a final verdict. Pichit maintains that his prior imprisonment was due to a court order—not a verdict—and should not disqualify him from holding a ministerial position. He argues that the legal distinction between a court order and a verdict remains crucial for his eligibility. The senators initiating the impeachment effort argue that appointing Pichit, who has a controversial history of attempted bribery, is ethically inappropriate. Pichit was previously accused of trying to bribe Supreme Court officials with two million baht, hidden in food bags, in 2008 while defending high-profile figures like Thaksin Shinawatra and Yingluck Shinawatra. This impeachment bid takes place against a backdrop of political intrigue. Thaksin, a deposed prime minister and significant figure within the Pheu Thai Party, allegedly supported Pichit's ministerial appointment as a favour after helping form a Pheu Thai-led cabinet following last year's elections. The current prime minister of Thailand, Srettha, reportedly received a mandate through backing from senators allied with former army chief Prayut Chan-o-cha. As the nation waits for the court's decision, the political landscape remains tense. Additionally, the Office of the Attorney-General is set to decide on May 29 whether to prosecute Thaksin for lese majeste, adding further complexity to the situation. Whether or not the court moves forward with the impeachment, this decision will undoubtedly have significant implications for the country's political future. The nation watches as Thursday approaches, anticipating a landmark ruling. -- 2024-05-20 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

E-cigarette drug ring busted in Bangkok: Meth-infused vapes by Top Photo courtesy of Pattaya News Thai authorities announced the capture of an international drug ring after a dramatic raid on several Bangkok condominiums on Thursday. Thai authorities announced the capture of an international drug ring after a dramatic raid on several Bangkok condominiums on Thursday. The Thai Special Service Division (SSD) and other agencies revealed their findings in a high-profile press conference. According to the SSD, the operation targeted a criminal network distributing modified e-cigarettes laced with methamphetamine and other dangerous substances. The investigation began after reports emerged of Pod K e-cigarettes being sold at entertainment venues across Bangkok. These e-cigarettes, marketed on online platforms for 4,000 baht each, contained methamphetamine, heroin, happy water, and other illicit drugs. The SSD, in collaboration with multiple agencies, traced the distribution source to a condominium in the upscale Thonglor area. SSD officers swooped in on Wednesday, arresting two suspects: Jayden, a Singaporean national, and Ketdao, a Thai national. The pair was found in possession of a substantial stash of drug-infused e-cigarettes. Following this breakthrough, the investigation led officers to another condominium in the Rama 9 area, where they apprehended two additional suspects: Maria, a Philippine national, and Joel, a Singaporean national, reported Pattaya News. All four suspects were swiftly escorted to Makkasan police station for further legal proceedings. In related news, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya authorities cracked down on the sale of vapes near schools, seizing 1.6 million baht worth of products. Led by the Consumer Protection Committee, the operation aims to protect public health, particularly children, from the dangers of nicotine addiction. The Secretary-General of the Consumer Protection Committee Thosarat Thanitiphan assigned a special operation centre led by the Director of the Consumer Protection Board (CPB) Lertsak Raktham, to act as the Deputy Director of the Special Operations Center, targeting the unregulated sales of electronic cigarettes. In other news, the Customs Department of Thailand imposed a hefty fine on e-cigarette importers, now demanding double the item’s value plus tax in an attempt to curb the increasing sales among the public, particularly the youth. by Top Photo courtesy of Pattaya News Full story: The Thaiger 2024-05-18 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Southern Thailand: Locals unite to halt Land Bridge project by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of Thai PBS World People’s networks from Ranong and Chumphon provinces rallied yesterday in front of the Lang Suan district office, vehemently opposing the controversial multi-billion baht Land Bridge project planned for their region. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1327570-southern-thailand-locals-unite-to-halt-land-bridge-project/ -
People’s networks from Ranong and Chumphon provinces rallied yesterday in front of the Lang Suan district office, vehemently opposing the controversial multi-billion baht Land Bridge project planned for their region. Protesters issued a powerful statement demanding the immediate cancellation of the project, arguing it would deplete vital resources better preserved for future generations. “Our children and grandchildren deserve a sustainable future, not a devastated landscape.” The colossal land bridge initiative, which includes several sub-projects worth billions of baht, proposes deep-sea ports on both the Andaman and Gulf of Thailand coasts, a motorway, a dual-track railway connecting the ports, an expansive industrial estate, container yards, a power plant, and a reservoir for industrial water needs. According to studies cited by the protesters, the project would require approximately 1,120 hectares of coastal land and sea in Ranong for the deep-sea port and another 928 hectares in Chumphon. Additionally, significant land expropriation would be necessary for the motorway, railway, and reservoir construction. The estimated total cost for the Land Bridge project stands at a staggering 1 trillion baht. Investors are set to receive 99-year concessions to operate the ports and other facilities, raising concerns about long-term local control and benefits. Promoted as a flagship policy by the Pheu Thai party, the Land Bridge aims to shorten shipping times between the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, bypassing the Straits of Malacca. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has been actively courting international investors for the project during his numerous overseas trips, reported Thai PBS World. However, local communities remain resolute in their opposition, prioritising environmental preservation and sustainable development over short-term economic gains. ORIGINAL STORY: Trillion-baht gamble: Deputy minister defends Land Bridge project In a heated defence yesterday, Deputy Transport Minister Manaporn Charoensri championed the government’s ambitious 1-trillion-baht Land Bridge project, which she claims has sparked considerable interest from foreign investors. Her statement came in response to sharp criticisms from former Democrat leader Samart Ratchapolsitte, who cast doubt on the project’s cost-effectiveness and feasibility. Despite his scepticism, Manaporn insists the initiative is attracting serious international attention. “Over 30 companies, including the Chinese giant China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), have shown interest during Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit’s recent visit to China. “Japanese investors are also keen, sending representatives to assess the project’s potential.” These investors are expected to commit formally once the Southern Economic Corridor (SEC) law is finalised. Manaporn assured that the Transport Ministry aims to complete the SEC law by the fourth quarter of this year, with investment invitations slated for the end of 2025. The Land Bridge project, designed to connect the Pacific and Indian Oceans via deep-sea ports in Chumphon and Ranong, is just one of several grand investment schemes the government is promoting. However, critics have raised concerns about the environmental impact, financial burden, and lengthy timeline, with the first phase not expected to finish until 2030. Kritchanon Aiyapanya, assistant minister attached to the Transport Ministry, countered Samart’s criticisms, arguing they misrepresent the project’s viability and could mislead both investors and the public, reported Bangkok Post. “The project has undergone extensive studies. Multiple agencies have confirmed that it will significantly reduce travel time and costs, providing a strategic alternative to the congested Strait of Malacca.” Kritchanon added that interest isn’t limited to Asia. Potential investors from the United States, Europe, and the Middle East are also eyeing the project, signalling global confidence in its prospects. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of Thai PBS World Source: The Thaiger 2024-05-18 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Phuket Monorail Plan Unveiled to Boost Tourism and Transport File photo courtesy: Eikipedia The Thai government has announced an ambitious plan to boost Phuket’s transportation infrastructure, including the introduction of a new monorail system that will connect the airport with Phuket Town. File photo courtesy: Eikipedia The Thai government has announced an ambitious plan to boost Phuket’s transportation infrastructure, including the introduction of a new monorail system that will connect the airport with Phuket Town. This comes as part of efforts to support the island’s growing economic and tourism sectors, which saw over 300 billion baht in circulation last year. Speaking at a press conference yesterday, government spokesman Chai Wacharonke revealed that Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has prioritised Phuket in the broader national strategy focused on tourism, transportation, and aviation development along the Andaman coast. Chai explained that the Transport Ministry has been tasked with developing immediate, medium-term, and long-term plans to transform Phuket’s transportation landscape, reinforcing its position as a top tourist destination and a vital gateway in Thailand’s southern region. To tackle urgent issues, the Department of Highways will upgrade traffic signals on Highway 402, enforce no-parking zones, and eliminate U-turn points on busy routes. A medium-term plan aims to address congestion on Highway 402 and expand Highway 4027 to four lanes, with the project expected to be completed by 2026. Long-term efforts include the construction of an expressway connecting Patong Beach with Phuket Airport, integrated into the intercity expressway system. This project is scheduled to finish by 2030. The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA) will carry out a feasibility study for a 41.7-kilometre light rail system, linking Phuket International Airport with Ha Yeak Chalong intersection. This assessment will also consider how to minimise traffic disruptions during construction, with the tram expected to be operational by 2031. Furthermore, a study on developing Phuket’s deep-sea port is underway to accommodate large cruise ships and support Andaman Sea tourism. According to Chai, this development could significantly increase revenue from high-spending tourists. The study is expected to conclude by year-end. Airports of Thailand (AoT) has been instructed to expand Phuket Airport’s capacity to handle up to 18 million passengers annually by 2031. Additionally, new plans include introducing seaplane services to enhance travel links between Phuket and surrounding islands, further solidifying the island's status as a premier tourist hub. -- 2024-05-18 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Flash flood warning issued for 26 provinces due to heavy rain by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Nation Residents in 26 provinces have been alerted to the risk of flash floods starting today until May 25 as heavy rainfall is anticipated across various regions, prompting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to intensify efforts to clear the city’s drainage system and install water pumps. Residents in 26 provinces have been alerted to the risk of flash floods starting today until May 25 as heavy rainfall is anticipated across various regions, prompting the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) to intensify efforts to clear the city’s drainage system and install water pumps. Deputy government spokesman Karom Phonphonklang announced that heavy rain is forecasted for 26 provinces, including 11 in the North, 11 in the South, and four in the Central Region over the next seven days, potentially resulting in runoff and flash floods. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation has mobilised emergency response teams and equipment in flood-prone areas to offer assistance. Residents in these areas are urged to stay informed through weather forecasts and heed the advice of authorities to ensure their safety. The Meteorological Department’s latest forecast predicts an increase in rain and thunderstorms nationwide starting today, due to a shift in wind patterns. A low-pressure ridge forming in the Andaman Sea between May 20 and 26 is expected to bring heavy rainfall, particularly to provinces along the Andaman coast, which could lead to flooding. Narong Rueangsri, BMA deputy permanent secretary, stated that City Hall has ramped up preparations for the rainy season. Measures include unclogging the city’s drains and canals and monitoring identified flood-prone areas. A work report from May 14 shows that 62.9% of the city’s drains and canals, spanning 2,664.7 kilometres out of a total of 4,234.7 kilometres, have been cleared. Additionally, 1,120 out of a planned 1,134 water pumps have been installed. In preparation, all four irrigation tunnels, 241 water gates, and 188 pumping stations have been inspected and cleared, reported Bangkok Post. The BMA has also pinpointed five major roads with flood-prone sections: Ratchayothin Road, Chaeng Watthana Road, Phaya Thai Road, Sri Ayutthaya Road, and Moo Ban Setthakit Road. “We ask residents to stay vigilant and follow official updates to minimise risks.” Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely, ensuring that resources are ready to be deployed where needed. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Nation Source: The Thaiger 2024-05-18 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin claimed today that he was not aware of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra’s recent meetings with representatives of Myanmar’s opposition groups and insisted Thailand is open to talks with all sides in the conflict-torn country. Speaking to reporters at the Government House, Srettha said that as an immediate neighbour of Myanmar, Thailand has the legitimacy to initiate talks within the framework of ASEAN’s “five-point consensus”. “I don’t know whether there were such talks. But I believe that everybody harbours good intentions for the country,” he said when asked about reports that Thaksin had held talks with representatives from armed groups fighting against the military government in Myanmar. Srettha insisted that Thailand’s Foreign Ministry and security agencies have been talking to all groups in Myanmar. “But it is supposed to be confidential,” he added. The prime minister said Thailand is strictly following ASEAN’s consensus to help resolve the crisis in Myanmar. Newly-appointed Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa said earlier today that he is not worried about reports that Thaksin has met with representatives of Myanmar’s opposition groups. Thaksin acted in his own capacity when he held discussions with Myanmar rebel groups fighting the military junta, he said. In a TikTok video posted by @basnobu23 on May 16th, the rider, Bas, shared a phone call that started innocuously but quickly derailed. The customer's boyfriend confronted Bas, mistaken, believing he was a secret lover due to the frequent calls. As they conversed, it became clear that the boyfriend was massively mistaken. "Are you her lover?" the boyfriend demanded. Bas replied, "No, no, I'm not," leading to more confusion and tension. Despite Bas's attempts to explain he was merely a Grab rider delivering food, the boyfriend remained sceptical. It wasn't until the customer clarified that the heated exchange simmered down, leaving the boyfriend red-faced. Customer’s boyfriend: Why are you calling? Are you her lover? Rider: No, no, I’m not. Customer’s boyfriend: F*ck you! Rider: Hey, it’s not what you’re thinking! I’m not her lover. Customer’s boyfriend: Are you not? You call her often, and you say you’re not her lover. Then who are you? Rider: You’re misunderstanding me. I’m not her lover. Customer’s boyfriend: It’s too often. Stop calling her! Rider: I’m so confused now. Bro, listen to me! I’m not her lover! I’m a Grab rider, coming to deliver her food. Customer’s boyfriend: Huh, Grab rider? (Darling, are you ordering food from Grab?) You are waiting to deliver food, right? Rider: Yes. Thailand's reversal on cannabis serves as a warning AP Photo/Sakchai Lalit Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, has called for a dramatic shift in the country's cannabis policy, directing that the plant be classified once more as a narcotic, restricting its use to medical and health purposes. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1327558-thailands-reversal-on-cannabis-serves-as-a-warning/ -
Thailand’s prime minister, Srettha Thavisin, has called for a dramatic shift in the country's cannabis policy, directing that the plant be classified once more as a narcotic, restricting its use to medical and health purposes. This marks a turning point after just two years of legal cannabis, initially introduced by former premier Prayut Chan-Ocha to rejuvenate tourism, boost the medical marijuana industry, and support struggling farmers. The decision, while not unexpected, highlights the complexities faced by Thailand in navigating its weed policy. Despite the plethora of cannabis dispensaries in Bangkok and the significant relaxation of previous strict drug laws, the reality hasn't matched expectations. It was a bold idea; however, the surge in cannabis use, particularly among the youth, combined with concerns over social harmony, has necessitated reconsideration. The decriminalization had its merits, notably reducing the burden on Thai courts and prisons, currently overwhelmed with drug-related cases. However, the challenges of managing this newfound freedom have been considerable. Young people’s cannabis usage rates have soared, and reports of health issues related to consumption are on the rise. Comparatively, while the West, including parts of the U.S., has generally seen a smoother transition to marijuana decriminalization, cultural and regional differences mean those models aren't easily replicated in Thailand. The kingdom, more conservative in its social outlook and surrounded by neighbours with stringent anti-drug stances, finds itself in a unique and challenging position. Additionally, Thailand's foray into legal cannabis spurred a rapid expansion of dispensaries and businesses, with nearly 8,000 outlets and numerous agro-firms emerging. The economic potential appeared vast, with forecasts predicting the industry could be worth $1.2 billion by 2025. However, regulatory gaps allowed foreign entities to flood the market, diluting benefits that were meant to support local communities and farmers. Public health data since decriminalization show a sharp increase in usage across demographics. The governor’s plans to reclassify cannabis would bring strict penalties back into play, with possession potentially leading to significant fines and long jail sentences. A carefully moderated middle-ground approach, focusing on medicinal use and proper regulation, may balance the urgent need to address health concerns while also preserving some economic benefits. Taxation of marijuana sales could provide government revenue, and enforcing stricter controls on the market could ensure local stakeholders reap the intended rewards. Ultimately, Thailand’s cannabis journey underscores the broader implications and lessons of swift policy shifts in contentious areas. Thoughtful recalibration, rather than outright bans, may offer the most sustainable path forward as the country seeks to navigate its complex cannabis narrative. THAILAND’S status as a film-making hub has taken a major leap forward with the release of “Mother of the Bride”, a mushy 90-minute Netflix production that was panned by critics but hit 27 million views in the first four days. Mr. Bill Heinecke, chairman of Minor Hotels group, operator of the Anantara Layan Phuket Resort and the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas, where the film was shot in its entirety, knows exactly why. “When you are watching two wars around the world, (this film) certainly has a good feeling.” Featuring for the first time Heinecke himself in a five-second scene with the lead actress Brooke Shields, the film saw both hotels being half taken over by the stars and the top crew during the filming in April 2023. Heinecke said it didn’t cost him a cent. In fact, the film-makers paid for their board and lodge. The film was eligible for subsidy from the Ministry of Tourism and Sport’s film unit which reimburses 20% of the costs of movies made in Thailand upon presentation of supporting VATable receipts and payments. “When you see how this benefits Thailand, it’s well worth it,” Heinecke says. In addition to the jobs created for hundreds of Thai supporting staff, and the experience they gained, the film has attracted a viewership that could cross 100 million. “This is a 90-minute commercial for Thailand. You don’t get many other opportunities like this. It shows the benefit of the ‘Soft Power’ strategy. It is a double-win for Thailand and Phuket.” TOP image released by Netflix shows Chad Michael Murray and Brooke Shields in a scene from “Mother of the Bride.” Photo: Sasidis Sasisakulporn/Netflix via AP and published by Yahoo!News Full story: THAI NEWSROOM 2024-05-18 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe
