Picture courtesy: The Pattaya News A 68-year-old Chinese woman has tragically drowned in the swimming pool of her residence near Pattaya, Thailand. The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 14th, sending shockwaves through the local community. Emergency services quickly responded after being alerted by Pol. Lt. Siriyaporn Kongphetsak, Deputy Investigator of the Nongprue Police Station. Their arrival at the house, situated near Mapprachan Reservoir in Banglamung district, Chonburi province, confirmed the worst fears. Ms. Zhang Weijing, the victim, was found floating face down in the pool. Despite swift recovery efforts, she was pronounced dead at the scene. Early examinations revealed no signs of foul play or struggle, leaving authorities to consider other possible causes, such as an accidental slip or a medical condition. A neighbour, Mr. Yupha Jankeaw, reported that Ms. Zhang’s daughter discovered the body upon returning home at 7:30 PM from running errands. Distraught, she had left her mother alone earlier in the day. Police have since documented the scene and transported the body for an autopsy to determine the precise cause of death. The death of Ms. Zhang Weijing has indeed cast a sombre mood over the local community, with many waiting patiently for further details on the circumstances surrounding this heartbreaking event. -- 2024-05-16 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe -

Thai Man Claims Black Magic Curse Causes Insects to Emerge from Skin Picture courtesy: Facebook Khaosod In a scene that seems ripped from a horror film, a 43-year-old man named Ad from Udon Thani, Thailand, claims he has been tormented by insects crawling out of his skin for over two months. In a scene that seems ripped from a horror film, a 43-year-old man named Ad from Udon Thani, Thailand, claims he has been tormented by insects crawling out of his skin for over two months. The afflicted believes this bizarre condition is a result of black magic rather than any medical ailment. The peculiar story emerged on social media when Panumart Jitwasinkul, a local known for his prominent Facebook page, was approached by a traditional healer, Mor Pla. They aimed to assist Ad, who insisted his suffering was due to dark magic. Ad shared harrowing accounts of experiencing pain and discomfort as various insects, including ticks and lice, seemingly exited his skin, often forcing him to apply topical medicine for temporary relief. To validate these claims, reporters visited Ad’s home near Nong Ta Kai Pond in Udon Thani, where they witnessed his unsettling procedures to expel the insects. Ad recounted that the ordeal began with what appeared to be insect eggs on his head. Despite initially finding temporary relief using kaffir lime, the insects continued to emerge relentlessly. His distress has escalated to the point where he cannot work, eat properly, or wear clothes without further aggravating the creatures. Despite admitting to past drug use, Ad vehemently denies that his symptoms are drug-induced hallucinations, stating he has been clean for some time. However, his family, including his uncle Kamphiw and aunt Ratchanee, speculates that his suffering might be linked to mental health issues rather than a supernatural curse. Kamphiw noted that Ad's condition may have psychological roots, exacerbated by stress from family problems and job-related anxieties. Ad, once a hardworking construction worker and moneylender, spiralled into depression and substance abuse following his separation from his wife two years ago. While Ad’s claims have drawn a blend of concern and disbelief from locals and online followers, many urge him to seek medical attention, underscoring the critical importance of addressing mental health issues with professional help. This shocking incident took place in their shared home in the Bang Phli district of Samut Prakarn, near Bangkok. Phichate, consumed by rage after discovering incriminating messages and pictures on his 14-year-old girlfriend’s phone, confronted Phongsathorn in his sleep and shot him multiple times. The police found Phongsathorn dead on his bed, with several gunshot wounds to his neck, eye, and body, and drug paraphernalia scattered around the room. Immediately after the crime, Phichate turned himself in at Bang Phli Police Station, bringing the modified blank gun used in the shooting. During questioning, Phichate revealed his history of depression and physical altercations, which might shed light on his state of mind at the time. Phichate's girlfriend denied having an affair, stating their relationship was purely platonic. Despite this, Phichate now faces charges of intentional murder, with potential penalties ranging from 15 years of imprisonment to the death penalty. He is also charged with violating firearm regulations, though specific details were not disclosed by the authorities. -- 2024-05-16 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Thai FM Maris's Thaksin Ties Fuel Foreign Policy Debate Maris Sangiampongsa. File photo courtesy: Thai PBS Newly instated Thailand Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa’s connection to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra is shaping up to be a double-edged sword. Newly instated Thailand Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa’s connection to ex-premier Thaksin Shinawatra is shaping up to be a double-edged sword. While it might offer leverage on international platforms, it could also summon issues of independence and public trust in his policy execution. Maris found himself unexpectedly thrust into the foreign minister role following Parnpree Bahiddha-nukara’s resignation in late April. With pressing matters like the Myanmar crisis and Thai-Cambodian maritime disputes on his plate, Maris faces a challenging diplomatic landscape. Having garnered a strong background with a bachelor's from Ramkhamhaeng University and a master’s from Ohio University in international relations, Maris started his career at the Foreign Ministry in 1986. His international assignments began in Brussels, later encompassing various pivotal roles, such as the ambassador to Nepal, Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. Maris’s professional journey interlaced with Thaksin’s when he served under him in various capacities, experiences that strengthened their bond. This tight connection might facilitate smoother dealings with Cambodia over the overlapping claims area in the Gulf of Thailand, potentially rich in natural resources. However, these ties also bring risks. Public and political scrutiny may amplify concerns about potential conflicts of interest. Handling Thaksin’s influence presents another challenge, particularly with Myanmar’s political turmoil. Thaksin’s interactions with Myanmar’s dissident groups could undermine Thailand’s official peace initiatives. This muddy alignment might render Thailand’s efforts less credible to the involved stakeholders, creating additional hurdles for Maris. Without a deputy to share the burden, Maris’s path will undoubtedly be complex. He must balance leveraging his connections with maintaining an independent stance in his diplomatic endeavours. His strategy with Myanmar remains pivotal, with suggestions to align humanitarian initiatives for broader regional cooperation. Maris’s leadership will be closely monitored as he navigates these nuanced international waters, with the Thaksin factor continuing to loom large over his decisions. Maris Sangiampongsa. Picture courtesy: Khaosod Renowned action movie star Tony Jaa recently visited Wat Phai Lom in Nakhon Pathom province to seek blessings, inadvertently sparking a lottery craze among local villagers. On a brief break from his international film projects, Tony visited the historic temple to pay respects to the revered Luang Phor Phu statue and engage in discussions about cultural preservation with the abbot, Phra Khru Palad Sittiwat (Luang Pi Namfon). His visit, just before the national lottery draw scheduled for today, drew significant local attention. Tony's dedication to social good was evident as he planned to incorporate the temple’s cultural methods into his charitable work. However, it was his participation in an ancient Thai tradition—praying before the Kuman Thong statue—that truly captured the locals' imagination. The Kuman Thong statue, believed to grant good fortune, was recently moved to a more accessible location for worshippers. Tony’s prayer ritual lasted over five minutes, during which locals eagerly observed, hoping to divine some of his good luck. At their request, Tony drew two incense sticks, revealing the numbers 881 and 664 as they burned. These numbers prompted a rush among villagers to buy lottery tickets featuring the lucky digits, culminating in today's highly anticipated draw. The Kuman Thong statue is believed to bring prosperity, especially in real estate transactions, and recently contributed to a local land sale success story. Tomorrow evening at 7.01pm, a grand blessing ceremony will be held, allowing worshippers to bring their own Kuman Thong statues to participate. This event underscores the enduring cultural significance of traditional customs and the seamless blend of local beliefs with international influence brought by figures like Tony Jaa. -- 2024-05-16 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Midnight Mayhem: Tiger on the Prowl Alarms West Thailand Locals Picture courtesy: Khaosod A community in Thailand was thrown into a state of alarm after a tiger emerged in the dead of night, apparently attacking residents. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1327378-midnight-mayhem-tiger-on-the-prowl-alarms-thailand-locals/ -
A community in Thailand was thrown into a state of alarm after a tiger emerged in the dead of night, apparently attacking residents. The incident took place in the early hours of today, May 16, when a tiger cub was spotted within a residential area of Bang Pakong, Chachoengsao, causing chaos and prompting an urgent response from local authorities and rescue teams. The tiger sighting was reported to Deputy Inspector Pongphop Kudhom of the Bang Pakong Police Station at approximately 3.30am. Upon receiving the call, Pongphop and his patrol unit, along with the Chachoengsao rescue team, rushed to the scene located in Soi Bang Wua-Bang Jak 7 in Moo 11, Bang Wua Sub-district. What they found was a village rattled by an unexpected visitor, a medium-sized tiger, resting outside a home in the area. The house, numbered 12/2 in Moo 11, belonged to 23 year old Thanapol, whose last name has been withheld for privacy. Thanapol and his fellow residents were stunned to find the wild animal lying in front of his property. The rescue team, with the help of the locals, attempted to coax the tiger into the open so that it could be safely captured. However, the animal became aggressive, causing some villagers to flee in terror. While the initial assumption was that the animal was a stray dog, it became evident that it was a young tiger when it started biting people. The situation escalated as the tiger attacked a journalist’s leg, leading to a tense and frantic 10-minute attempt to lure the animal out of the residential area and into the street for capture. Rescue workers tried to subdue the tiger with a cloth but it grew increasingly agitated and began to bite more ferociously, injuring rescuers, police officers, and the journalist with its sharp teeth, leaving their pants torn and skin scraped. Eventually, the rescue team managed to apprehend the tiger and secure it in the back of a rescue vehicle. The police documented the incident and took custody of the tiger, which was then delivered to the Regional Wildlife Conservation Office No. 2 (Si Racha) for appropriate handling. Twenty-one-year-old Chayanan recounted the harrowing experience, revealing that he was driving Thanapol home on a motorcycle when they encountered the tiger in the middle of the street. Initially mistaking it for a dog, they realised their mistake as the animal approached, identifying it as a tiger. The two men quickly fled to Thanapol’s house, with the tiger in pursuit, leading to an emergency call for assistance. Foreigner with stab and gunshot wounds identified as Indian man Photo via Facebook/ หนังสือพิมพ์รายวัน.สยามประชา The identity of a foreign man found dead along Ban Na Road in Phang Nga, Thailand, was confirmed yesterday as a 53-year-old Indian national. The man sustained both a stab wound and a gunshot wound, raising concerns among locals initially suspecting he was a Bangladeshi cloth vendor. However, police questioning disproved this as no one from the group recognized him. Further police investigation revealed that the deceased had overstayed his tourist visa by more than five years. He was known to have lived in the Thai Mueang district since 2016, where he sold clothes door-to-door on a motorbike. Autsama Sareerat, a community leader, described the man as well-mannered and solely focused on selling clothes. She noted his sudden disappearance in 2017 and suggested robbery as a possible motive, citing his missing diamond ring. Authorities are now combing through security footage to identify and apprehend the perpetrator. The case remains under active investigation. -- 2024-05-16 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe -

Thailand’s Business Confidence Declines Amid Wage Hike Worries Picture courtesy: sawasdee Business confidence in Thailand has taken a notable dip as the latest Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) dropped in April, highlighting mounting concerns among entrepreneurs over economic pressures, notably a proposed increase in the daily minimum wage. Business confidence in Thailand has taken a notable dip as the latest Thai Industries Sentiment Index (TISI) dropped in April, highlighting mounting concerns among entrepreneurs over economic pressures, notably a proposed increase in the daily minimum wage. The TISI recorded 90.3 points in April, a drop from March's 92.4 points, according to the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI). Entrepreneurs are facing a barrage of challenges, including anticipated lower sales, production hurdles, and the financial ramifications of the government's policy shifts. Their anxieties chiefly stem from the proposed wage hike, rising domestic diesel prices, and increasing raw material costs. Kriengkrai Thiennukul, President of FTI, underscored the stress the proposed uniform daily minimum wage boost to 400 baht (£9) imposes, alongside concerns over higher diesel prices impacting operational and logistics costs. The retail diesel price experienced an increase from 30 baht per litre to 33 baht per litre from April 20 to July 31, following the expiration of the diesel excise tax cut. Furthermore, the Labour Ministry has proposed implementing the daily minimum wage hike by September or October, pending final approval from the tripartite wage committee. Earlier this year, the government raised the daily minimum wage to rates between 330 and 370 baht (£7.50 - £8.50), representing an increase of 2 to 16 baht. The tripartite wage committee later approved a rise to 400 baht for certain sectors, such as large hotels and tourism businesses in 10 provinces, effective from April 13. According to the FTI, current wage levels, paired with the surge in energy and raw material prices, are straining businesses. Labour-intensive industries have recorded a 20% increase in operating costs, with smaller companies experiencing a 5-7% rise. Industries like cement, steel, iron, and glass have been hit hardest, with costs skyrocketing by 30-40% after wage adjustments. Kriengkrai has called for the government to heed the tripartite wage committee's guidelines, advocating for nuanced wage policies that consider skills rather than a blanket increase across all provinces. The April TISI results were based on feedback from 1,268 entrepreneurs across 46 industries within the FTI's scope. The survey revealed that the global economy remains the top concern for 79.4% of respondents, followed by oil prices (56.6%), the domestic economy (56.4%), and domestic politics (40.2%). Picture courtesy: Thai Rath The Corrections Department has assured the public that it provided appropriate care to late political activist Netiporn Sanesangkhom during her time in custody. Netiporn, known for her strong stance against the government, began a hunger strike while detained at Bangkok's Central Women's Correctional Institution from January 26th. Dr. Somphob Sungkutkaew, the department’s inspector-general, stated that although the department adhered to human rights principles and its standards for inmate care, a fact-finding committee has been established to investigate her death fully to ensure transparency. Netiporn's health rapidly deteriorated due to her hunger strike. She was first treated at the department’s hospital for fatigue on February 29th and later transferred to Thammasat University Hospital from March 8th to April 4th. Despite receiving treatment to allow her to resume minimal eating, her condition remained precarious. On Tuesday morning, Netiporn fell unconscious. Immediate CPR was administered, and she was rushed back to Thammasat University Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 11.22 am. Dr. Pongpuk Areeyaphinan, hospital director, highlighted the challenges faced with Netiporn’s care. Hunger strikers like Netiporn receive slow dietary re-acclimatisation, which she struggled with. Despite medical advice, she refused essential vitamins and nutrients, further complicating her already fragile health. The exact cause of death will be determined by an autopsy, but officials stressed that her declining health was monitored rigorously, with efforts made to persuade her to alter her course. The department stands firm in its position that all necessary measures for her welfare were taken. -- 2024-05-16 Get our Daily Newsletter - Click HERE to subscribe

Aussie Woman Reveals Harrowing Tales from Infamous Thai Prison Picture courtesy of Holly Deane-Johns via Daily Star UK Holly Deane-Johns, an Australian woman who spent seven gruelling years in a Thai prison for heroin trafficking, has opened up about the appalling conditions she endured in the notorious Lardyao Women’s Correctional Institution, often dubbed the "Bangkok Hilton." Holly Deane-Johns, an Australian woman who spent seven gruelling years in a Thai prison for heroin trafficking, has opened up about the appalling conditions she endured in the notorious Lardyao Women’s Correctional Institution, often dubbed the "Bangkok Hilton." In 2000, Holly, then aged 29, was caught trying to mail a parcel of heroin to her family in Perth. She faced the death penalty but was instead sentenced to 31 years in the overcrowded and squalid prison. Speaking on the True Crime Australia podcast with Gary Jubelin, Holly recounted the horror she faced upon arrival. “More than 100 Thai women were sitting on blankets. I asked if anyone spoke English, and one woman raised her hand. She found me a spot to sleep, but there was literally no visible floor space,” she said. The woman instructed others to lie down, revealing a sliver of the floor about nine inches wide. “That was my bed for the next seven years.” Prisoners had to bring their own essentials. “Some couldn’t afford blankets. I bought a couple and folded them to sleep on,” Holly shared. Picture courtesy of Holly Deane-Johns via Daily Star UK She detailed the primitive conditions, “In my section, there were 2,000 women and only 10 toilets in the yard. Fights over sleeping spots and washing facilities were common. As soon as the cell doors opened, it was a stampede to the trough of cold water. You had to strip naked before the doors opened, or others would pull at your clothes to slow you down.” Her first shower was nearly violent. “A trustee looked like she’d hit me with a metal bar for being slow, but I made it clear I’d fight back. We later became friends, and she let me store my blankets safely.” Holly faced relentless stress and frequent fights. “My first fight was with a friend, and I don’t even know what it was about. It was that crazy.” Even using the toilets was traumatic. “There was no privacy. I didn’t use the toilet for a month because I was so embarrassed. Eventually, I realised I had to adapt. I decided to live like a Thai.” After a long campaign, Holly was transferred to an Australian prison in 2007, where she served another five years before her release in 2012. Since then, she has authored a book titled “Holly’s Hell,” detailing her harrowing experience in the Bangkok Hilton, shedding light on the brutal reality behind its walls. Thailand is gearing up for an unusual bout of extreme weather today, as the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) has issued warnings for both soaring temperatures and thunderstorms. The northern region is set to sizzle, potentially reaching a brutal 41 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, the southern provinces brace for rough seas with waves climbing over 2 metres. This meteoric event, influenced by southeast winds across Thailand and an easterly wave over the Gulf of Thailand and southern areas, could result in extremely hot conditions nationwide. Thunderstorms, gusty winds, and heavy rainfall are likely to accompany this scorching heat. In Bangkok and its surrounding areas, residents should prepare for an intensely hot day punctuated by a 40% chance of thunderstorms. Moreover, the eastern and southern parts, particularly, are urged to stay alert for potential hazards from strong winds and heavy rain. The Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea are likely to experience waves under 1 metre, except in thunderstorms where waves may peak above 2 metres. Maritime operators are advised to exercise caution, especially in storm-prone areas. Interestingly, the current air quality across Thailand has improved, crediting widespread rainfall and favourable air circulation, keeping dust and smoke levels low. Regional Forecasts: - **Northern Region:** Expect temperatures to range from a balmy 25-27 degrees Celsius at night to a scorching 34-41 degrees Celsius by day, with a 40% chance of thunderstorms and gusty winds. - **Northeast:** Hot conditions with temperatures falling to 23-27 degrees Celsius at night and peaking at 35-37 degrees Celsius by day. A 40% chance of thunderstorms with strong winds. - **Central Region:** Hot with a 40% chance of thunderstorms and temperature variations from 26-28 degrees Celsius at the lowest to 37-39 degrees Celsius at the highest. - **Eastern Provinces:** Thunderstorms predicted in 60% of the area, heavy rain possible, and sea waves could reach over 2 metres during storms. - **Southern (East Coast):** Expect thunderstorms and rain in many areas, particularly provinces like Surat Thani and Nakhon Si Thammarat, with temperatures ranging from 24-27 degrees Celsius to highs of 33-36 degrees Celsius. - **Southern (West Coast) & Bangkok Area:** Similar hot daytime weather with a 40% chance of storms, temperatures between 27-28 degrees Celsius at night, rising to 35-37 degrees Celsius by day. The TMD advises all residents to stay informed on weather updates and take necessary precautions, especially those living in high-risk areas.
