THAI plans summer flights including Milan and Oslo
Thai Airways International (THAI) unveiled an ambitious summer schedule set to cover 61 global destinations, including Milan and Oslo. From March 31 to October 26, the airline is not just expanding its wings with a special focus on two brand-new destinations: the fashion capital of Milan and the scenic splendour of Oslo. This strategic expansion includes a significant increase in direct flights to Europe and a robust recovery of routes to China, marking a milestone in THAI’s post-Covid-19 resurgence. Among the highlights, THAI’s intercontinental offerings now boast daily journeys to Munich, Istanbul, Stockholm, Copenhagen, Zurich, Paris, and Perth. Notably, flights to Frankfurt and London will take off twice daily, a testament to the high demand on these routes. The airline is also doubling down on its commitment to Australia with twice-daily flights to Melbourne and Sydney, and a daily service to Perth, ensuring travellers have ample choice for their Down Under adventures. Starting July 1, the daily flights to the newly introduced Oslo and Milan will take off, opening up new avenues for travellers and cementing THAI’s presence in Europe. On the regional front, THAI isn’t holding back either. With triple daily flights to Tokyo (Narita) and Seoul, twice daily to Tokyo (Haneda), Osaka, and Manila, and an increase in flights to Beijing and Shanghai starting July 2, Asia has never been more accessible, reported TTR Weekly. Moreover, the airline will maintain a strong presence in Southeast Asia, with multiple daily and weekly flights to key cities including Singapore, Jakarta, Ho Chi Minh City, and Bangkok’s domestic network, boasting nine daily flights to Phuket alone. Authorities find makeshift home under Huay Yai flyover
During a routine inspection on Tuesday, officials from the rural highway department and the Huay Yai municipality stumbled upon a makeshift home beneath the Ban Bueng-Map Ta Phut flyover in Huay Yai subdistrict. What started as a simple check quickly escalated into a showdown between 57 year old Saiyut Sithlert and his wife against local authorities, who demanded the immediate evacuation of their makeshift dwelling under the bridge. Delving deeper into the situation, the couple revealed the unconventional origins of their living arrangements, citing familial discord as the catalyst. Strained relationships with their daughter and her spouse left them with nowhere else to turn. Saiyut lamented their inability to find refuge in their daughter’s cramped quarters across the road, thus resorting to the bridge for shelter. Despite Saiyut’s assurances that their stay was temporary, authorities remained resolute in their decision, leaving the family in a state of despair. The looming threat of an impending inspection by the Department of Rural Roads added to their woes, casting uncertainty over their humble abode furnished with necessities and household appliances. However, amidst the chaos, a glimmer of hope emerged as officials and local leaders granted the family an extension until the end of March, offering a brief respite from imminent eviction, reported Pattaya Mail. Grateful for this compassionate gesture, Saiyut pledged to honour their agreement and vacate the premises, acknowledging the complexity of their predicament. In related news, in a heart-stopping moment near Pattaya City School 7, a dessert vendor witnessed a young woman teetering perilously close to the edge of a footbridge along Sukhumvit Road on February 27. The vendor approached the distressed woman, urging her away from the brink of danger while calling for assistance from the Pattaya City Police. In other news, an unconventional rescue mission took place in Pattaya, where authorities came to the aid of a homeless man drifting in the sea on a self-constructed raft made of plastic bottles. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of Pattaya Mail Full story: The Thaiger 2024-03-22 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Appeals Court confirms 2 years jail sentence to Danish resort manager
The Appeals Court on Koh Samui convicted yesterday 21 March 2024 the Danish former resort manager Stig Wulff and his wife to two years and five months in prison for fraud in connection with the transfer of shares in the resort, in which the Dane was previously a managing director, from himself and his British partner to his wife. The sentence was a confirmation of the sentence which the Criminal Court on Koh Samui first metered out to the Danish-Thai couple. In Thailand, when the lower court and the appeals court reach the same verdict, the case can under normal circumstances not be appealed once again. The court permitted, however, the lawyer of the Dane, Suwatchai Sawasdi, to post bail for his release during the time until the second case against the Dane will be finished in court next month. While the first case was a criminal case, this second case is a civil lawsuit in which the former partner of the Danish man demands compensation from the Dane and his wife for losing the ownership of their Koh PhangAn property to a local loan shark after they had transferred all the shares to the wife. by Gregers Møller Full story: ScandAsia 2024-03-22 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Visa-free access to the UK in new roadmap pact signed in Bangkok on flying visit by Cameron
VISA WAIVER FOR THAIS GOING TO THE UK | One of the goals of the UK-Thai Strategic Partnership agreement signed with UK Foreign Secretary Lord Cameron on Wednesday is to allow Thai passport holders visa-free access to the United Kingdom on short-term visits for tourism or business. On Wednesday, Thailand signed a roadmap agreement with the United Kingdom elevating the Western country as a strategic partner. The deal was inked on a flying visit to Bangkok by newly appointed UK Foreign Secretary and former Prime Minister, David Cameron. A key upshot of this agreement is that active talks will now focus on granting visa-free access to Thai passport holders in the United Kingdom. It comes with a mounting number of Thais living in the United Kingdom and Brits in Thailand. At the same time, the agreement is coming with rising geopolitical tension in the Indo-Pacific. Part of this week’s agreement was enhanced security cooperation between the two kingdoms. In a significant diplomatic move, Thailand and the United Kingdom have elevated their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership. This has been described as a roadmap for closer ties between the countries. In Bangkok, on Wednesday, top Foreign Ministry officials were certainly upbeat. by Carla Boonkong & Pranee O' Connor TOP: Lord Cameron of Chipping Norton (left), the UK Foreign Secretary exchanged signed agreements at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Bangkok with Deputy Prime Minister Parnpree Bahiddha-Nu-Kara (right) on his visit this Wednesday. Tinder ad slammed as an insult to Isaan women and Korat cuisine
Dating app billboard criticised by Korat women’s right group The leader of a women’s rights protection group in Thailand’s Nakhon Ratchasima province has described a dating app’s advertisement as being disrespectful to women. “The word ‘delicious’ should only be used about food, but the ad used it about women. That is not appropriate. I personally think that the ad disrespects women,” said Chanyanut Surachat. Several billboards promoting the Tinder dating app have popped up in the Muang district of Nakhon Ratchasima, known locally as Korat. On the billboards, a question is asked: ‘What is delicious in Korat?’ There were two choices: ‘Fried Korat Noodles’ or ‘Korat ladies’. There was a checkmark next to ‘Korat Ladies’ and a cross next to ‘Fried Korat Noodles’. Missing Canadian found dead at central Thailand railway station
Police today discovered the dead body of a Canadian man under the platform of Chet Samian Railway Station in the central province of Ratchaburi. This discovery followed a missing person report filed yesterday, March 20. A group of foreigners lodged a missing persons report at Banpong Police Station yesterday, saying that their Canadian friend, 26 year old Ralph Joseph Ryan, disappeared while they were on train No. 168, travelling from Bangkok to the southern provinces of Chumphon and Trang. According to the friends, Ryan separated from them to smoke cigarettes outside the train carriage when they reached Ratchaburi province. It was his habit to stand at the train door while smoking. However, Ryan did not return after 30 minutes. The friends decided to stop at Baan Kluay Station to seek help from the police when he did not return. Police officers and railway authorities set out a search party for Ryan but could not locate him. The friends tracked his last known location near Klong Bang Tarn Station in the Banpong district of Ratchaburi province using his phone signal. Despite conducting searches from Klong Bang Tarn Station and other stations, officers could not find the missing man. Photaram Police Station later received a report from the leader of a platform construction team that one of his workers stumbled upon the Canadian man beneath the platform of Chet Samian Station in Ratchaburi province. Falling off train The worker informed the police that he usually napped in the gap beneath the platform every afternoon. He went there today and was shocked to see a dead body. Ryan was found shirtless, wearing dark blue shorts, with his wallet and ID card in his trouser pocket. Nearby were his flip-flops and headphones. He had a major wound on his left leg, and blood strains were presented on the platform. Police suspect that Ryan might have accidentally fallen off the train, with his leg striking the platform causing severe injury and blood loss. They believed ongoing construction at the station might have contributed to his fall. A concrete structure projecting from the platform potentially hit his leg while he was smoking at the train door, causing his fall and injury. Officers also believed that Ryan might have sought refuge in the gap beneath the platform to avoid being hit by the train. However, due to his severe injury, he could not get out of the gap. His body has been transferred to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for an autopsy. The State Railway of Thailand prohibits smoking on trains and at train stations. There are no designated smoking areas on trains, leading many passengers to smoke at train doors or open windows, violating the rules. Tinder ad slammed as an insult to Isaan women and Korat cuisine
The leader of a women’s rights protection organisation in the Isaan province of Nakhon Ratchasima condemned an advertisement by the Tinder dating application for insulting women in the province and depreciating Korat’s signature dish. Tinder, one of the world’s most popular dating applications, recently launched a new advertising campaign across various provinces in Thailand. The campaign encourages visitors of each province to use Tinder to not only explore the unique features of the provinces but also to connect with attractive people in the area. The advertising project comes with huge billboards placed in city centres and along main roads in each province. A Thai netizen on social media shared one such billboard from the southern province of Songkhla. “Come to Songkhla to try… Signature Had Yai fried chicken (emoji indicates no). Had Yai guys (emoji indicates yes).” A lot of Thai netizens flooded the comment section with fun comments and likes on the post. However, a group of women in Nakhon Ratchasima, also known as Korat, did not agree with them. Similar billboards appeared along the Friendship Highway in the Pak Chong district of Korat. One billboard on a building on the Pho Klang Road in the city centre of the province. The message on these billboards read… “Delicious item in Nakhon Ratchasima… Korat stir-fried noodles (emoji indicates no). Korat girls (emoji indicates yes).” Call for removal Chanyanut Surachat, the leader of women’s rights protection in Korat, expressed her concerns to Channel 7 regarding an advertisement she had seen multiple times on social media but failed to understand. Upon careful examination, she found the advertisement to be disrespectful towards Korat women. Chanyanut highlighted the inappropriate use of the term “delicious,” typically reserved for describing food, to refer to women. She deemed this usage disrespectful and offensive to the honour and dignity of Korat women. Alongside others, she felt offended by the message conveyed in the advertisement and advocated for the removal of the billboard. Chanyanut complained to Tinder’s advertising team, stating that individuals with creativity should also exhibit respect towards others. She emphasised that her call to action extended beyond the local community in Korat to encompass other provinces as well. Chanyanut argued that the advertisement not only insulted female residents of the province but also devalued their signature dish, Korat stir-fried noodles, also known as Pad Mee Korat. According to Chanyanut, the dish holds significant importance to the region and is even featured in the province’s slogan. She expressed that the dish is delicious and highly recommended for anyone visiting the province to try. Chayanut said she hoped the billboard would be removed before March 23, especially the one on Pho Klang Road. This billboard was located only 500 meters away from the Statue of Thao Suranari, where one of the province’s major events would take place between March 23 and April 3. by Petch Petpailin Photo via MGR Online Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-21 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment.
