UK Foreign Secretary Cameron elevates trade links in Thailand
United Kingdom Foreign Secretary David Cameron arrives in Bangkok today in a bid to strengthen trade and economic ties between the politically beleaguered UK and the burgeoning Thailand. The former British prime minister intends to sign a UK-Thai strategic partnership roadmap on his inaugural visit to the Indo-Pacific region. This roadmap is designed to enhance collaboration on defence, healthcare, and climate initiatives between the two nations. The 57 year old Lord Cameron expressed his belief that collaboration with Bangkok would yield “jobs and growth back here” in Britain as he embarked on this journey. Following his engagements in Thailand, Cameron is scheduled to proceed to Australia for the annual Australia-UK ministerial consultations (AUKMIN). Thailand holds significant importance as a key partner for the UK in the Indo-Pacific region, which the UK has prioritised in its foreign policy agenda. Cameron emphasised Thailand’s crucial role in advancing peace and reconciliation in Myanmar, as well as in upholding international law and promoting regional cooperation. “South East Asia is a commercial powerhouse and Thailand is one of the biggest economies of the lot. Working with countries in this region means jobs and growth back here in the UK. “Thailand is a founding member of ASEAN and an influential player across the Indo-Pacific region. We will continue to work with them to address shared global challenges that affect us all – including the impacts of climate change, rapid technological development, and threats to global health.” The former UK Prime Minister, who controversially introduced a referendum to leave the EU during his tenure from 2010 to 2016, and earned the nickname “Dodgy Dave” from Labour MP Dennis Skinner due to his handling of the Panama Papers scandal, is set to highlight UK-Thailand defence cooperation during his visit to a military airbase. Here, he will inspect fighter jets assembled with British components, contributing over £300 million (13.7 billion baht) to the UK economy through exports. Additionally, Cameron will unveil the launch of a fund worth up to £6 million (275 million baht) aimed at promoting green growth in Thailand, focusing on sustainable transport and carbon pricing initiatives. The former Tory leader will collaborate with Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin to establish a UK-Thailand strategic partnership roadmap, as announced by the Foreign Office. This roadmap aims to enhance bilateral relations in defence, climate and energy, trade and investment, agriculture, digital technology, health, and education, particularly in anticipation of next year’s 170th anniversary of UK-Thai diplomatic ties. Following his engagements in Thailand, Cameron will proceed to Australia for the Aukmin summit, reported The Evening Standard. by Bob Scott TOP Picture of David Cameron with Benjamin Netanyahu courtesy of The Prime Minister of Israel Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-20 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. British Man Arrested for Allegedly Selling Cocaine in Phuket
UPDATE: Thai cops uncover British man’s drug stash in Phuket by Bob Scott Picture courtesy of Karon Police A British man is facing a lifetime behind bars after Thai cops swooped on his hotel room and reportedly found a significant stash of illegal drugs. The British man, Stephen Mullady, was arrested on the spot for suspected cocaine dealing. The father of one, who had been socialising with friends, was arrested by Thai police who allegedly uncovered various illegal substances and drug paraphernalia within his accommodation. Officers reportedly seized 2.4 grammes of cocaine, along with three weighing scales and 104 small plastic bags typically used for packaging the drug. Additionally, small quantities of methamphetamine and crystal meth were allegedly confiscated. The 45 year old suspect allegedly tested positive for methamphetamine, further complicating his legal situation. In Thailand, a conviction for cocaine dealing carries a minimum sentence of 20 years and a maximum of life imprisonment, while possession of other illicit substances could result in a 10-year term behind bars. Mullady’s arrest adds to a series of police operations targeting badly behaving foreigners involved in drug-related crimes and violence. Picture courtesy of Karon Police Immigration officials have pledged to intensify scrutiny in response to these incidents, said Police Lieutenant Colonel Kornphon Liangboonjinda, Deputy Superintendent of the Karon District Police Station. “Officers received an anonymous complaint that there was a group of foreigners causing a disturbance by regularly partying in a room at the hotel called Just a Puff. “Police went to check the room and Stephen was shocked and behaving suspiciously. When we entered we found cocaine and methamphetamine in a black bag, along with three digital weighing apparatus and his passport in a grey bag. “Plus, there were 104 little bags for separating drugs on his table. Mullady faced charges for the sale of cocaine, classified as a Category 2 prohibited substance, with minimum prison sentences of 20 years and a maximum of life imprisonment. Additionally, authorities charged Mullady with the possession of Category 1 methamphetamine, which carries a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison. However, law enforcement officers determined that the quantities discovered were insufficient to warrant a trafficking charge. “Foreigners think it’s easy to sell drugs. But it’s also easy for us to catch them. “They should enjoy their holiday without breaking the law.’ Police chiefs announced today that foreigners will face increased scrutiny following a series of arrests. Roy Ingpairoj, Deputy Chief of the Royal Thai Police, stated that he had instructed the Commissioner of Immigration to conduct additional checks on foreigners who seemed to have suspicious intentions for visiting the country, reported the Daily Mail. Mullady, awaiting a court appearance, becomes the fourth Briton arrested in recent weeks for suspected drug dealing. Andrew John Brett, aged 36, was apprehended on the island of Koh Tao on February 29, accused of selling ecstasy and LSD to fellow tourists. Peter Hull, aged 44, was allegedly found with cocaine and ecstasy in his accommodation on the island of Koh Samui on March 3. Briton Charly Garcia, aged 48, from London, was arrested on March 12 for purportedly distributing cocaine, ecstasy, and other narcotics to tourists via the Telegram app in Chiang Mai. Employees engaged in violent brawl in Patong
A violent clash erupted among employees of the same company in Patong, Phuket, after work hours, drawing attention and concern toward the tourist city’s image. The brawl, which took place in the middle of a busy roundabout, was captured in a 1-minute 28-second video and shared on social media, sparking a mix of comments ranging from calls for calm to nostalgia for the quieter days of the Covid-19 pandemic. The incident occurred at the Dolphin Circle in Patong Beach, Kathu District, where a group of men engaged in a fierce street fight using weapons, as tourists driving by witnessed the altercation. One individual suffered a serious head injury and was taken to Patong Hospital. Officers from Patong Police Station intervened, detaining about ten people for further investigation to determine the cause of the dispute before proceeding with legal action. Upon examination, it was found that the two parties involved in the social media video were employees of the same company, which had internal conflicts during work. After finishing work, while driving behind each other, an exchange of abusive words led to a rear-end collision near Kalim Circle. The confrontation escalated as both parties got out of their vehicles and physically attacked each other with weapons. When police arrived at the scene, they found one injured person sitting at the location with a severe head injury, reported KhaoSod. The Kusoldharm Foundation was summoned to transport the injured to Patong Hospital and took both parties to Patong Police Station for investigation and legal proceedings. In related news, a violent clash between motorbike taxi riders and a taxi driver near North Pattaya’s bus station was caught on camera on Sunday, March 10. In a dramatic video obtained by reporters, the chaos unfolded as motorbike taxi riders, donning their signature orange vests, unleash a barrage of blows on the hapless taxi driver, with his terrified passengers looking on. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-20 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Thailand anticipates American tourism influx due to Songkran
The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is anticipating a robust tourism influx from North and South America this year, with a projection of at least 1.5 million tourists – a figure that mirrors the 2019 statistics. This surge is attributed to the confluence of the Songkran celebrations and the Easter holiday in April. Deputy Governor for Europe, Africa, the Middle East, and the Americas at TAT, Siripakorn Cheawsamoot, noted the sturdy travel demand from the Americas. He revealed that the trend is likely to persist into April, coinciding with the Easter holiday, a time when travelling is popular in the US. “The Songkran celebration this year begins early, from April 1, potentially enticing foreign tourists to extend their stay during the Easter holiday to participate in the water festival or other cultural activities.” From the start of this year, Thailand has seen approximately 100,000 tourists each month from the US. In response to this trend, the TAT has suggested the government extend the eligibility period of stay beyond the current 30 days for US nationals, as long-haul tourists tend to have lengthier stays post-pandemic, thereby increasing expenditure in Thailand. This affirmative perspective for the market is in line with flight bookings from Delta Air Lines and Korean Air. These airlines operate seven daily flights from South Korea to Bangkok, Phuket, and Chiang Mai during the hot season under a joint venture operation, aiming to connect passengers from the US. Andrew Kim, Director of Sales for Korea and Southeast Asia at Delta Air Lines, anticipates an improvement in carrier performance within the next three months, driven by strong demand from both Thailand and the US. Tourist influx “Thailand has been attracting numerous leisure tourists as well as participants for meetings, incentives, conventions and exhibitions.” The TAT predicts that this year will see arrivals of 1 million visitors from the US, 300,000 from Canada, and 200,000 from Latin America. Average spending in Thailand last year was recorded at 80,000 baht (US$ 2,200) for a 15-day trip. Despite the Olympic Games slated for Paris from July 26 to August 11, Siripakorn expects that many long-haul tourists may choose to visit Thailand to avoid the congestion. He also mentioned that long-haul flights during the hot season, running from late March through October, are witnessing a steady recovery, resuming to 85% of the levels recorded in 2019. In association with Delta Air Lines and US-based non-profit organisation Tourism Cares, TAT conducted a travel familiarisation trip last week to encourage sustainable tourism in Thailand. TAT also plans to invite representatives from 15 airlines to assess the potential of provincial airports, such as Krabi Airport, Chiang Mai Airport and U-tapao Airport, from April 2 to April 5, reported Bangkok Post. Additionally, TAT will host a tourism roadshow in the US in the third week of April, marking the soft opening of its new Chicago office. by Alex Morgan Picture courtesy of Somchai Poomlard Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-20 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Move Forward MP demands probe into death of a conscript
Move Forward MP for Bangkok Tisana Choonhavan has called on the army to investigate the suspected suicide of a conscript, who used to be her assistant, to disclose the autopsy results and to scrap conscription. In her “X” post yesterday, the MP wrote that she had received a message from a close friend of her former assistant, informing her that he had hanged himself in the toilet of an army barracks. She claimed that she had received messages from the former assistant, complaining of stress and having to perform household chores for his commander, such as sweeping the floors in his house, mowing the lawns and, during the night, his fellow conscripts smoked grass, making it hard for him to sleep. Health riders revolutionise medication delivery
To transform healthcare accessibility, volunteers dubbed “health riders” are poised to bring medicines directly to patients’ doorsteps, following a successful trial period. Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew, unveiling the service on Monday, March 18, announced its rollout to cater initially to 30-baht plus universal healthcare beneficiaries across 32 provinces. This innovative initiative, part of the 30-baht plus healthcare scheme, ensures prompt medication delivery to patients, eliminating the need for them to queue at hospitals or pharmacies. Speaking at the Day of Village Public Health Volunteers ceremony at Pua School in Nan’s Pua district, Cholnan highlighted the significant impact of the health riders, lauding their role in reducing hospital queues by 14% daily. Under this scheme, bedridden patients or those facing difficulty in accessing medical facilities will receive prescribed medicines directly at their homes, enhancing convenience and efficiency in healthcare delivery. Since December, a pilot programme has been underway, with 2,796 orders fulfilled in Nan province alone, showcasing a resounding success in improving patient satisfaction and access to medication. Encouraging health volunteers and hospital personnel to participate as health riders, Cholnan announced the opportunity for them to register for a provider ID, offering an avenue for additional income, reported The Nation. Furthermore, plans are underway to collaborate with private logistics firms, including Global Jet Express, GRAB, and Thailand Post, to further streamline and expand the delivery services nationwide. ORIGINAL STORY: PM Srettha inspects ’30-Baht Plus’ healthcare policy Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin spearheaded the inspection of the Phra Ajarn Mun Bhuridatto Hospital’s construction progress and closely monitored the implementation of the 30-baht Plus healthcare policy in Sakon Nakhon Province. The Phra Ajarn Mun Bhuridatto Hospital stands as a beacon of hope, catering to a vast population, including residents from neighbouring provinces. The relentless pursuit of excellence has driven ongoing enhancements within the hospital to deliver optimised services efficiently. PM Srettha’s vigilant oversight extends to the rollout of the pioneering healthcare initiative, where citizens can access treatment for a mere 30-baht Plus or with just their ID card. This policy, orchestrated by the Ministry of Public Health, is poised to extend its reach to Sakon Nakhon Province imminently, following successful trials in Phrae, Roi Et, Phetchaburi, and Narathiwat. Furthermore, as March approaches, the government gears up for the project’s ambitious second phase, which will encompass eight additional provinces. Phetchabun, Nakhon Sawan, Sing Buri, Sa Kaeo, Nong Bua Lamphu, Nakhon Ratchasima, Amnat Charoen, and Phang Nga are all slated to benefit from the expansion, promising enhanced healthcare accessibility for millions across Thailand, reported Pattaya Mail. by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Nation Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-20 - Discover how Cigna Insurance can protect you with a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment. Drunk American flees horror crash leaving British family shattered in Thailand
A drunk American man is on the run after a horror smash left a British family of three hospitalized in Thailand. The British man fears unless the fugitive is brought to justice he will continue to drink and drive and cause mayhem after showing no remorse after the crash. Thai police are actively pursuing the American, who is accused of crashing into a British family, allegedly under the influence of alcohol, while riding a motorcycle in Koh Chang, Thailand. Gregory Yamada, the American involved, collided with the British couple and their four year old daughter during what was supposed to be a dream family holiday, leaving them with critical injuries. According to the British father, the driver appeared to be still heavily intoxicated and displayed no remorse following the collision. His 40 year old wife was rendered unconscious in the harrowing crash, sustaining severe injuries to her head and body. Their daughter suffered injuries to her eyes, face, and body upon being flung into the air, along with a sinus fracture from the impact on her face. The family, who were enjoying a holiday in Thailand, were walking along a footpath on the island of Koh Chang when they were struck by the 39 year old American, from San Jose, California. It is alleged that Yamada was four times over the legal alcohol limit at the time of the incident. Yamada was driving a potent Honda motorcycle and has been charged with “driving while intoxicated, causing a collision resulting in injuries to others.” The Thai authorities have since issued an arrest warrant for him, suspecting that he has fled across the border to Cambodia. The 36 year old British father disclosed that they have since returned to the UK following the January crash but are still undergoing medical treatment. “The injuries my partner and daughter suffered were horrific. From what I witnessed, they are lucky to still be alive. “At the hospital on the night of the crash, he was evidently still very drunk and denied any involvement. Summer storm alert for 45 Thai provinces including Bangkok
The Thai Meteorological Department (TMD) issued a severe summer storm warning for 45 provinces, including Bangkok, as strong winds, thunderstorms, hail, and occasional lightning struck at 5am today, March 20. It is the seventh summer storm warning issued by the TMD this year. A moderate high-pressure system from China extended its reach over northern Thailand and the South China Sea, coupled with easterly and southeasterly winds bringing moisture to the area, leading to the early stages of the summer storm season in Thailand. This weather pattern resulted in thunderstorms, strong winds, and hail in some parts, with the potential for lightning strikes. Following this, temperatures are expected to drop. The Department had previously announced a summer storm warning affecting 62 provinces, with strong winds and hail expected from yesterday to today. Residents in the affected areas are advised to exercise caution and avoid open spaces, large trees, unstable structures, and billboards due to the potential dangers of summer storms. They should also take care of their health as the weather changes. Farmers are advised to prepare for the protection of their crops and livestock from possible damage. The provinces expected to be impacted today, include Mae Hong Son, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Lamphun, Lampang, Phayao, Nan, Phrae, Sukhothai, Uttaradit, Tak, Kamphaeng Phet, Phitsanulok, Phichit, and Phetchabun in the north. In the northeast, the provinces of Loei, Nong Khai, Bueng Kan, Nong Bua Lamphu, Udon Thani, Chaiyaphum, Khon Kaen, Kalasin, Maha Sarakham, Roi Et, Yasothon, Nakhon Ratchasima, Buri Ram, and Surin are listed. For the central region, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Lopburi, Saraburi, Sing Buri, Ang Thong, Ayutthaya, Suphan Buri, Kanchanaburi, Ratchaburi, Nakhon Pathom, Samut Sakhon, and Samut Songkhram, including Bangkok and its vicinity, are mentioned. In the south, Phetchaburi and Prachuap Khiri Khan are noted, reported KhaoSod. Citizens are urged to stay informed through announcements from the Meteorological Department, which can be accessed online at the department’s website or through their hotline, available 24 hours at 0-2399-4012-13 and 1182.
