  2. The district of Kantharalak in Si Sa Ket, Thailand, is buzzing with anticipation as it prepares to reopen access to the Preah Vihear temple after 16 years. The decision to establish a temporary checkpoint for entry into the Cambodian temple followed Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul’s recent visit to the province. The move has sparked excitement among the locals, who view it as a significant step towards boosting tourism and trade between Thailand and Cambodia. Anupong Suksomnit, Governor of Si Sa Ket, confirmed that the checkpoint would provide passage for tourists and locals from both countries. This move comes after a 16-year closure due to a territorial dispute between the two countries in 2008, which revolved around the area surrounding the ancient site. To display their readiness for this development, local authorities arranged a media tour across different sectors in Si Sa Ket. The enthusiasm was palpable as everyone is eager to get things moving. Authorities in Si Sa Ket have rallied a task force to gear up for the border’s reopening, said Jit Ardsanjorn, the chief of the Khao Phra Viharn National Park. All sectors are ready and simply waiting for the government’s go-ahead. She further revealed that the region’s tourist attractions are prepared to receive visitors. New hotels and resorts have sprung up in Kantharalak to host incoming tourists, while local shops and facilities have undergone renovation. Jit is optimistic that the checkpoint’s opening will significantly increase tourism numbers. She predicted a surge from the current 170,000 tourists per year to approximately 700,000, mirroring past figures, reported Bangkok Post. The push for the checkpoint’s opening has been a focal point for the Interior Ministry under Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin’s government, aiming to stimulate the tourism sector. This move was further solidified by a meeting between Prime Minister Srettha and Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet on February 7 to discuss the matter. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Wassana Nanuam Full story: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Suspected insurgents attack coffee shop in Pattani with pipe bombs Two police officers and the mayor of a tambon administrative organisation (TAO) narrowly escaped injury when two improvised explosive devices, believed to have been pipe bombs, were thrown into a coffee shop at a petrol station in Thung Yang Daeng district of Thailand’s southernmost province of Pattani on Sunday. 4. Two police officers and the mayor of a tambon administrative organisation (TAO) narrowly escaped injury when two improvised explosive devices, believed to have been pipe bombs, were thrown into a coffee shop at a petrol station in Thung Yang Daeng district of Thailand’s southernmost province of Pattani on Sunday. District police suspect that southern rebels are responsible for the attack, intending to harm the two officers, Pol Lt-Col Veerawat Darongkoon, the suppression inspector, and Sobri Pohsu, mayor of the Nam Dam TAO. Thung Yan Daeng police say that one of the rebels entered the coffee shop through the back door and lobbed the two pipe bombs into the shop. One of them exploded without hurting anybody. The intended targets fled in different directions. The other device failed to detonate, as police believe that it was timed to explode later, when more policemen would arrive to investigate the first explosion. 5. 'A perfect mess': Thailand's proposed cannabis crackdown steeped in political games and business owner anger Thailand’s cannabis buyers might soon need a doctor’s note. But business operators say a draft bill’s clampdown on recreational weed could derail a fast-growing industry and hinder health advancements. by Jack Board The cannabis industry has flourished in Thailand since laws about the drug's cultivation and sale were changed. 6. Thailand’s cannabis buyers might soon need a doctor’s note. But business operators say a draft bill’s clampdown on recreational weed could derail a fast-growing industry and hinder health advancements. BANGKOK: On a weekday afternoon, more and more people start slowly filing into a subterranean plaza off Bangkok’s iconic Khaosan Road - for decades a tourist hub in the Thai capital. The underground space, formerly home to a supermarket, is lined with small shops and tables and chairs and is cool and breezy. It has to be. Air filtration systems are required to be installed here to keep the mostly international tourist crowd comfortable, and more pertinently, clear the haze of thick marijuana smoke. This is Plantopia, also known as Weed City. Multiple stores exclusively sell cannabis and related paraphernalia - and customers can smoke it on the spot. For nearly two years, Thailand has witnessed the runaway expansion of the cannabis industry. It is estimated that some 20,000 registered dispensaries have opened since 2022, when the country became the first in Southeast Asia to decriminalise the recreational use of marijuana. Its medicinal use was legalised since 2018. But the days of such unfettered, unrestricted cannabis use in Thailand could be numbered, as the government debates how to place stricter guardrails on the rampant industry. The country’s health minister is central to a push to ban the recreational use of cannabis by the end of the year. According to Dr Cholnan Srikaew, changes to the law are currently being negotiated before being presented to Cabinet this month. A Bill is expected to be presented to parliament before the current session ends in October. by Jack Board TOP: The cannabis industry has flourished in Thailand since laws about the drug's cultivation and sale were changed. 7. Thai govt enhances medical accessibility for HIV/Aids patients by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of MGR Online The Thai government, represented by the Public Health Ministry, has green-lit a plan to enhance medical accessibility for individuals living with HIV/Aids. 8. The Thai government, represented by the Public Health Ministry, has green-lit a plan to enhance medical accessibility for individuals living with HIV/Aids. This decision follows a multi-agency meeting headed by Minister Cholnan Srikaew. The dialogue, held on Friday, included representation from the Thai Network of People Living with HIV/Aids (TNP+), the Aids Access Foundation, the Institute of HIV Research and Innovation, the Foundation for Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity and several state departments. The primary topic was HIV/Aids control in Thailand, with special emphasis on three proposals that focused on improving medical access to those affected by HIV/Aids. Speaking yesterday, Cholnan highlighted that the advocacy groups voiced demands for individuals with HIV/Aids to be permitted access to antiretroviral drugs under the gold card universal healthcare scheme, the Social Security Fund and the civil servant medical welfare scheme. Moreover, they insisted on the availability of antiretroviral drugs at all public health agencies, inclusive of Tambon Health Promoting Hospitals, public health service centres in Bangkok, pharmacies, and civil society service units. This is in a bid to expand patient access, he detailed. The civil sector also appealed to the ministry to enhance health service access for HIV/Aids patients. They requested the ministry to simplify the process for civil society organisations to register as service providers for HIV/Aids patients. This would enable them to supply HIV self-testing kits, backed by full financial support from the ministry. The civil sector members additionally called upon the ministry to develop mechanisms to halt any discrimination against individuals living with HIV/Aids. This aligns with the government’s commitment to eliminate HIV/Aids infections by the year 2030, added Cholnan. He further suggested that a national public relations campaign would bolster people’s understanding, raise awareness, and minimise both stigma and discrimination against HIV/Aids patients. Post-meeting, the ministry commissioned state agencies and the civil sector to devise a plan to combat the disease, stated Cholnan, reported Bangkok Post. “Our objective is to eradicate Aids by the year 2030 through the provision of health services,” he asserted. “We have been in close collaboration with civil groups and will sustain this joint effort to eradicate Aids.” by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of MGR Online Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. Phuket authorities given 3-day deadline to investigate beach access blockage by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of PR Phuket The Phuket authorities face a three-day deadline to probe the ownership of a land plot belonging to a private company in Phuket that obstructs public access to Laem Nga Beach. 10. The Phuket authorities face a three-day deadline to probe the ownership of a land plot belonging to a private company in Phuket that obstructs public access to Laem Nga Beach. This directive was given by Vice Governor Sattha Thongkham on Friday following a demonstration by approximately 500 individuals at the blocked beachfront property the previous day. The protesters demanded that the owner open up access to the beach, which has been barricaded for more than 10 years. In response, the Vice Governor has asked the Rural Roads Office, Mueang Phuket District Office, and Phuket Land Office to urgently look into the matter, which involves the suspected illegal blockage of a public road in Tambon Ratsada of Mueang district. The Mueang Phuket district office is coordinating with Tambon Ratsada Municipality in discussions with the property owner to dismantle the fence and restore beach access. Following this, the municipality office will be responsible for enhancing the road conditions and installing streetlights. Additionally, the construction permit of the road and land ownership document will be scrutinised by all relevant agencies, with progress updates expected within three days, as directed by the Deputy Governor. Tambon Ratsada Mayor Nakarin Yosaengrat disclosed that he had conversed about the fence removal with the property developer, who in turn asked for 15 days to construct new fences to deter trespassing, reported The Phuket News. This rural road, spanning 1,290 metres, was constructed by the now-defunct Accelerated Rural Development Department in 1994, before being handed over to Tambon Ratsada Municipality in 1997. However, only the initial 800 metres of the road is accessible to the public at present, after the property developer put up fences across a 64-rai land plot. The title deeds for the property were acquired back in 1982. In related news, following the assault scandal of Swiss national Urs Fehr, aka David, Phuket Peninsula Estate Co., owner of beachfront villa No. 23, took a startling step today, sending a backhoe to erase the encroaching structures, including the contentious stairway. by Mitch Connor Top Picture courtesy of PR Phuket Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. The Government of Thailand is set to welcome the prestigious Formula E electric-car racing championship in the coming year. This revelation was made by Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on his X account yesterday, following an engaging conversation with a senior executive of Formula E. Formula E, also known as the ABB FIA Formula E World Championship, has earned global recognition for organising thrilling electric vehicle races since its inception in Beijing in 2014. The championship later received the status of an FIA world championship. The prime minister disclosed that Thailand has been progressively embracing electric vehicles (EVs) with a significant 40% of all car orders since last year being for EVs. “Therefore, I think it is good to bring the Formula E racing competition to Thailand to stimulate the economy and development of the country’s infrastructure while reinforcing the policy of reducing carbon emissions.” According to PM Srettha, executives of Formula E will be scouting locations in Chiang Mai next week to ascertain the feasibility of holding the championship in Thailand. He believes that hosting such a global event will boost Thailand’s reputation as a regional tourism hotspot. Joining the Bangkok-born prime minister for the discussions was Paetongtarn Shinawatra, head of the ruling Pheu Thai Party and deputy chair of the National Soft Power Strategy Committee. Electric-car racing In a separate conversation, the prime minister revealed that a dozen French enterprises have expressed interest in expanding their businesses in Thailand, targeting industries such as hospitality, fashion, and automobiles. After a meeting with French business leaders in Paris, he shared that Accor, a French multinational hospitality company, is eager to collaborate with the Thai government on tourism initiatives and invest in local funds like the pension fund to grow their business. The company also plans to construct hotels in Thailand’s three southern border provinces. PM Srettha also met executives from Michelin, the French tyre manufacturer that uses Thai rubber. Michelin (Thailand), established in 1987, operates five factories in the country, employs over 8,000 workers, and has invested over 40 billion baht (US$ 1.13 billion). The company consumes over 700 billion tonnes of natural rubber annually for tyre production. The 62 year old Thai PM revealed that Michelin plans to increase its production capacity and investment in Thailand over the next three years. The company has also expressed intentions to transition to clean energy soon, a move that the government fully supports, reported Bangkok Post. Apart from its tyre manufacturing business, Michelin is also renowned for its Michelin Guide, which reviews and rates global dining establishments. The company sees Thailand’s potential in the food industry and is ready to assist in promoting this sector to attract tourists, Srettha added. by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 18. Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin made waves in Paris as he orchestrated a series of high-stakes meetings with France’s business elite. From fashion to automotive technology, the 62 year old Thai PM’s mission was clear: to solidify Thailand’s status as a regional powerhouse for trade and innovation. Kicking off his jam-packed schedule yesterday morning, PM Srettha delved into talks with Sébastien Bazin, AccorHotels CEO, exploring synergies to turbocharge tourism across Thailand and the ASEAN region. Next on the agenda was a tête-à-tête with Pascal Morand, the visionary driving France’s haute couture scene, as they schemed to position Thailand as Southeast Asia’s epicentre for fashion and design excellence. Next, the Bangkok-born PM was in deep discussion with Gwendal Poullennec, Michelin Guide director, strategising ways to showcase Thailand’s gastronomic prowess to the world. The meeting continued with Bénédicte Épinay of Comité Colbert, where the Thai premier extended a warm invitation for French luxury brands to explore Thailand’s cultural richness and collaborate on elevating Thai products onto the global stage. In the afternoon, the prime minister engaged in talks with executives from Valeo, charting a path towards carbon neutrality in the automotive industry, a crucial step in Thailand’s environmental agenda. Later, the Thai PM turned his attention to Airbus Group, ensuring the seamless operation and future growth of its Thai branch, vital for helicopter MRO services in Southeast Asia. Closing the day with flair, PM Srettha huddled with EssilorLuxottica’s top brass, addressing logistical challenges to bolster Thailand’s position as an export hub for optical goods, reported The Nation. The last engagement saw the Thai PM-cum-finance minister broker deals with Forvia Group, affirming Thailand’s appeal for automotive investment and pledging to streamline bureaucratic processes for smoother business operations. In related news, earlier this week, PM Srettha highlighted the nation’s infrastructure advancements, particularly the Land Bridge and Eastern Economic Corridor (EEC) projects, at the 2024 ASEAN-Australia Special Summit, according to an official government representative. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of The Nation Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 19. Thai Health Ministry under scrutiny for drug user-dealer regulation by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Thairath The Public Health Ministry faces a 30-day deadline to substantiate its regulation that categorises individuals holding five methamphetamine pills or 10mg of crystal meth or less as mere drug users, not dealers. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1322031-thai-health-ministry-under-scrutiny-for-drug-user-dealer-regulation/
  20. The Public Health Ministry faces a 30-day deadline to substantiate its regulation that categorises individuals holding five methamphetamine pills or 10mg of crystal meth or less as mere drug users, not dealers. This demand comes from the Office of the Ombudsman, which is considering cancelling the ministry regulation. The secretary-general of the Office of the Ombudsman, Police Lieutenant Colonel Keirov Krittateeranon, expressed a keen interest in understanding how the regulation is going to tackle social disobedience, as previously claimed. Police Major General Vichai Sangprapai, the former deputy commander of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, initiated this review. He filed a petition against the regulation with the Office of the Ombudsman, arguing that it contravenes Thailand’s constitution and could cause more harm than good. According to Pol. Maj. Gen. Vichai, this regulation could potentially enable addicts to become dealers, leading to increased social harm, including crime and disorder. He fears that corrupt police may exploit the regulation, accepting bribes to ignore the quantity of drugs in possession, leading to dealers being classified as users in need of rehabilitation rather than imprisonment. Furthermore, he argues that the regulation may not assist in drug suppression and does not reduce the prisoner population, as it could increase crime rates by allowing drug users to go free. Emphasising the need for more effective anti-drug regulations, he noted that meth pills induce hallucinations and aggression, regardless of the quantity consumed. He pointed out that, on average, each police station in the country deals with five meth-related violence cases daily. He questioned the effectiveness of treating drug users as patients, considering the ongoing violence. He also critiqued the absence of government data on drug relapse post-rehabilitation, reported Bangkok Post. “The health ministry regulation is dangerous, and I will fight it with all my might.” Pol. Lt. Col. Keirov indicated that if the Ombudsman agrees with Pol. Maj. Gen. Vichai’s petition, which calls for the regulation’s cancellation on the grounds of its opposition to the constitution or other laws, the case will be referred to the Administrative Court for a decision. He confirmed that the Office of the Ombudsman will notify the Ministry of Public Health about this matter within the 30-day timeframe. by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Thairath Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
