Phuket Gov Gives Press Conference Regarding Alleged Kicking Incident Involving Swiss Expat
Phuket—At 3:30 PM, on March 9th, 2024, Mr. Sophon Suwannarat, the Phuket Governor, held a press conference regarding the case progress of Mr. David, a Swiss expat who allegedly attacked a Thai female physician. Thai national media reported that previously Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul issued an urgent order to the Phuket Governor who reportedly was participating in a tourism event in Germany to return to Thailand. The David case caused significant controversy among Thai citizens and needed attentive monitoring, said Anutin. Sophon publicly revealed that after the incident, he had been following up on the David case closely with a direct call to the Deputy Governor from Germany. The case included encroaching on the public area, revoking David’s visa and registration of two firearms (As well as investigating officials who illegally approved issuing firearm registrations for a foreigner, which is against Thai gun regulations technically), and considering repealing his charity foundation as David was under investigation as to whether he used his elephant foundation to seek benefits and if they were actually rented and not animals in need of sanctuary. Bangkok bans parking under BTS stations to ease traffic
Bangkok’s traffic management authorities have implemented a new regulation prohibiting parking in the indented areas of central road islands beneath BTS Skytrain stations. The regulation, which took effect immediately, aims to alleviate traffic congestion and reduce accidents caused by illegal parking. The Royal Gazette announced a traffic regulation for Bangkok, effective today, which forbids parking in the indents of central road islands under BTS Skytrain stations. This directive comes after it was observed that the public was misusing these spaces designated for the maintenance vehicles of the BTS system, leading to operational disruptions and traffic issues. The new traffic regulation, issued by the head of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s traffic police, states that all vehicles are prohibited from parking in these specific areas unless they are BTS maintenance vehicles. This measure is in response to the misuse of these spaces by the general public, which has resulted in hindrances for maintenance vehicles and obstacles to traffic flow, potentially causing congestion and accidents. The regulation was established under the authority granted by Section 139 (2) of the Land Traffic Act of 1979, which, aligned with Sections 26 and 38 of the Constitution of the Kingdom of Thailand of 2017, allows for certain limitations on personal freedoms for the sake of state security and public order. Following the National Police Office’s Order No. 62/2566 dated January 25, 2023, the police commissioner of Bangkok or an appointed deputy is authorised to enforce this traffic regulation, which specifically states: 1. The regulation is officially titled Traffic Chief of Bangkok Metropolitan Administration’s Regulation on the Prohibition of Parking for All Types of Vehicles at All Times, Except for BTS Maintenance Vehicles in the Indented Areas of Central Road Islands Underneath the BTS Skytrain Stations, BE 2567 (2024). 2. The regulation is in effect from the day following its announcement in the Royal Gazette. 3. The prohibition applies to all vehicles, with the exception of BTS maintenance vehicles in the specified areas beneath the following BTS Skytrain stations: Lat Phrao Intersection, Phahon Yothin, Ratchayothin, Sena Nikhom, Kasetsart University, Forest Department, Bang Bua, 11th Infantry Regiment, Wat Phra Sri Mahathat, Phahon Yothin 59, Sai Yud, Saphan Mai, Bhumibol Adulyadej Hospital, Air Force Museum, Khu Khot, Bang Chak, Punnavithi, Bang Na, Bearing, Krung Thonburi, Wongwian Yai, Pho Nimit, Talat Phlu, Wutthakat, and Bang Wa. 4. Upon the enforcement of this regulation, any previous regulations, rules, or orders that conflict with this one are hereby revoked, reported KhaoSod. The announcement, dated February 29, was signed by Deputy Police Commissioner Thawatchai Wongsanga, acting in place of the Bangkok Police Commissioner and head of the city’s traffic police. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of pptvhd36 Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Water assault over 200,000 baht debt injures elderly in Nonthaburi
A high-pressure water assault on a wheelchair-bound woman and her 82 year old mother has led to a heated dispute over unpaid debt in Nonthaburi, Thailand. Yesterday, a 41 year old woman, Jittrathiwat, reported being attacked by Jeab, the sister of debtor Duangkamol, during a confrontation at a beauty salon the previous evening. Jittrathiwat recounted that she had been pushing her mother’s wheelchair when they stopped to discuss a debt settlement with 42 year old Duangkamol. The conversation turned sour when Jeab appeared and sprayed them with water, injuring the mother’s eye. The incident prompted Jittrathiwat to file a police report and seek medical attention for her mother. The dispute originated from a series of loans that Jittrathiwat provided to Duangkamol, starting with 5,000 baht (US$140) in November 2022 and escalating to a total of 200,720 baht (US$5,700) by September 2023. Duangkamol, who initially claimed the money was for farming and lending purposes, later confessed to using it for personal needs and promised to repay the amount. Duangkamol, defended herself, explaining that her business was affected by Covid-19 and customers defaulting on payments. A leg injury further complicated her ability to repay the debt. An agreement to make weekly payments of 1,000 baht (US$28) was reached but fell through due to continued disagreements. The police have taken statements from both parties, with Jittrathiwat and her mother accusing Duangkamol of assault, and Duangkamol filing a trespassing complaint. Both individuals have been examined by medical professionals, and legal proceedings are underway to resolve the conflict. In related news, a debtor, who had previously complained to the Crime Suppression Division about being attacked with a knife and having his teeth knocked out, has been informed that his case is not progressing. The police superintendent of Bang Bua Thong Police Station clarified that the incident was not related to illegal lending but was a case of assault stemming from a previous loan disagreement. Both parties are now preparing to face charges. by Samantha Rose Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Anthrax outbreak in Laos prompts raw meat warning in Thailand
Kenika Ounjit, a deputy government spokesperson, yesterday revealed a public health warning from the Department of Livestock Development. The warning urged the public to refrain from consuming raw meat. This follows a report of an anthrax outbreak in Laos, published on the World Forum Facebook page on Wednesday. According to the report, three cases of anthrax were identified on March 4 in the Soukhoumma district of the Lao province of Champasak. This province shares a border with Thailand’s eastern Ubon Ratchathani province, raising concerns for potential cross-border transmission, said Kenika, highlighting raw beef, buffalo, goat, and sheep meat as potential carriers of the bacterium. “The meat must be thoroughly cooked.” Kenika went on to describe anthrax as a deadly disease caused by Bacillus anthracis that contaminates soil or grass, which livestock may consume. Ingestion of the bacteria by livestock often results in the blood turning black, followed by death. The consumption of uncooked meat from these contaminated animals can then transmit the disease to humans. Kenika outlined the signs of infection, which can manifest within two months, ranging from minor skin blisters, headaches, and diarrhoea to severe shortness of breath. A delayed diagnosis of an anthrax infection can be fatal. She further revealed that the Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives instructed the Department of Livestock Development to ramp up surveillance measures to prevent the disease from entering Thailand. She added that stringent animal quarantine measures and checks for smuggled livestock along the Thai-Lao border have been ordered, reported Bangkok Post. Farmers have also been requested to report any sudden animal deaths. Kenika concluded by stating there is currently no such outbreak in Thailand, but vaccines have been prepared for cattle as a preventative measure. In related news, a Thai doctor issued a warning to both locals and foreigners after a Japanese man contracted a tapeworm from eating Thai-style raw meat dishes. by Mitch Connor Picture courtesy of Thairath Source: The Thaiger 2024-03-11 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Majority of 12,000 Thais in Dubai are working illegally – Thai consul general
Most of the 12,000 Thais employed in Dubai in the United Arab Emirates are illegal workers who were either lured with promises of high pay. There are only about 4,500 who are fully and correctly documented. Nipa Nirannoot, the Thai consul-general in Dubai, said many Thai women have been lured to work in massage parlours, but end up being forced into prostitution. Others work in online gambling or scam networks, lured with the promise of work in oil fields and abandoned once they arrive there, she said. She admitted, however, that the Thai embassy or consular office cannot directly help the Thai victims, unless they have sought help from the local police first. The Thai consul-general said Thais needing to help can either call 999, even on a cell phone without a SIM card, through the Dubai police application or Facebook.
