  1. Bangkok’s Mo Chit 2 bus terminal enhances safety with arrival area closure by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Tourist Bangkok Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), or Mo Chit 2 as it is commonly referred to, has announced the closure of its arrival area from March 1. 2. Bangkok Bus Terminal (Chatuchak), or Mo Chit 2 as it is commonly referred to, has announced the closure of its arrival area from March 1. The decision is part of a broader initiative to enhance passenger safety and curb the activities of illegal motorcycle taxis targeting travellers. The government and the Transport Ministry had previously instructed Transport Co, the operator of the terminal, to upgrade Mo Chit 2’s services before the Songkran holidays in April. This information came from Atthawit Rakchamroon, the managing director of Transport Co, yesterday. As part of the response, the terminal’s arrival zone was shut between 8pm and 4am earlier this month, reported Bangkok Post. Currently, vehicles are obligated to collect and discharge their passengers at the terminal’s departure area. According to the company, this new regulation has led to a decrease in illegal motorcycle taxis and other safety concerns at the terminal. Transport Co has further plans to increase efficiency and elevate service and safety standards at Mo Chit 2. Starting from March 1, buses will be required to collect passengers at platform one. The arrival area will henceforth be allocated for motorcycle taxis. In collaboration with various agencies, including the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) and multiple public transport operators, Transport Co has begun improving traveller facilities at the terminal’s southern end. Taxi ranks and queues for other public transport services are now located on the first floor of the terminal’s parking lot. The government’s Quick Win policy feeder services will also utilise this area for passenger pick-up and drop-off. All Transport Co buses will now offload passengers at Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal before proceeding to Mo Chit 2. The move is designed to create a connection between the terminal and the city’s train networks, including SRT’s Red Line and the MRT Blue Line. In addition to these reforms, Transport Co is planning improvements to the terminal’s stores, food vendors, restrooms, elevators, rest areas, and lighting, as stated by Atthawit. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Tourist Bangkok Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 3. Thailand battles highest bile duct cancer rate in Southeast Asia by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has revealed that Thailand has the highest rate of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) among the Asean nations. 4. Public Health Minister Cholnan Srikaew has revealed that Thailand has the highest rate of cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) among the Asean nations. The minister announced this worrying statistic at an event commemorating World CCA Day in Maha Sarakham. The primary cause of this cancer is identified as liver fluke. Thailand, being the Southeast Asia nation with the highest prevalence of CCA, is focusing on efforts to eliminate and treat existing CCA cases across 30 high-risk provinces. To achieve this, the health ministry is collaborating with several agencies, launching a comprehensive screening program for liver flukes in individuals aged over 15. Moreover, early detection systems for cholangiocarcinoma will be implemented for those aged over 40, to decrease the infection rate to less than 1% of the population by 2025, reported Bangkok Post. In support of this initiative, a liver fluke screening kit developed by Khon Kaen University will be used to identify high-risk individuals who are likely to develop CCA. In addition, some Royal Covid Testing Vehicles have been repurposed to facilitate ultrasound screenings. In related news, Thailand grappled with a surge in cancer cases, witnessing over 140,000 new diagnoses annually, claiming some 84,000 lives. Despite strides in medical science, formidable cancers like liver, lung, breast, colon, and cervical persisted as significant threats. A complex interplay of genetics, diet, toxins, stress, and environmental hazards fueled this epidemic, with lung cancer particularly exacerbated by Thailand’s polluted skies and PM2.5 fine dust. Amid these challenges, promising innovations in precision treatments and immunotherapies offered glimmers of hope. Collaborations between hospitals, government bodies, and international partners aimed to bridge gaps in access to quality care, yet hurdles like treatment complexities, soaring costs, and strained healthcare facilities persisted. Early detection initiatives, such as mammograms, brought rays of hope, but raising awareness and ensuring equitable access to care, especially in remote areas, remained critical imperatives in the ongoing battle against cancer. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 5. Thailand’s DNP refutes Khao Yai National Park farmland claims by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Claims to farmland within Khao Yai National Park were strongly refuted by Thailand’s Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) on Sunday. 6. Claims to farmland within Khao Yai National Park were strongly refuted by Thailand’s Department of Natural Resources, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP) on Sunday. This came in response to a recent announcement by the Agricultural Land Reform Office (Alro) that approximately 2,933 rai of land within Pak Chong district, a Unesco World Heritage site area, have been designated as agricultural land for farmers. DNP’s director-general, Athapol Charoenshunsa, stressed that Sor Por Kor land entitlements cannot be granted to land identified as a national park area. His comments followed an on-site visit to the disputed area, alongside a team from the DNP. The team revealed that park authorities reclaimed a plot of land in the eighth National Park Management Area in July last year, previously occupied by a private party. Further instances of wrongful occupancy within the national park’s land were reported in August. On January 9, it was discovered that seven Sor Por Kor documents had been issued for over seven rai of land within the park, reported Bangkok Post. The head of Khao Yai National Park, Chaiya Huayhongthong, has written to Alro to protest against the landmarking and has demanded the removal of boundary markers from the park. Chaiya has also requested information regarding the issuance of Sor Por Kor rights documents but is yet to receive a response. A joint investigation by the national park office chief and the Phaya Sue task force is currently ongoing. Chaiya highlighted that the decree on agricultural land reform mandates a thorough review of the status of the land in question before any redesignation. He went on to mention that the authorities must also verify that the land’s occupants are indeed farmers. However, in this case, the individuals who received Sor Por Kor rights within the park do not appear to be farmers. The National Park Office Director, Chaiwat Limlikit-aksorn, has reported the issue to the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Natural Resources and Environment, Gen Phatcharavat Wongsuwan. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 7. Thailand’s private ownership of lions raises safety concerns by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post The private ownership of wild animals, notably lions, has come under scrutiny in Thailand following several incidents where these creatures were observed in public areas. The issue has sparked widespread concern among the public regarding safety and animal welfare. 8. The private ownership of wild animals, notably lions, has come under scrutiny in Thailand following several incidents where these creatures were observed in public areas. The issue has sparked widespread concern among the public regarding safety and animal welfare. The first case surfaced in January when a lion cub was noticed in the backseat of a fancy convertible in Pattaya. Simultaneously, another cub was spotted wandering in a residential area in Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri. An investigation into the latter incident revealed that two 10-month-old lion cubs were being kept in a home. Days later, two more cubs, aged nine months and two months respectively, were found in distressing conditions in a café on Sukhumvit Soi 4. Another cub was confiscated from a Phuket hotel room on February 14. The authorities, on learning about these incidents, swiftly seized the animals and pressed charges against the owners, which included illegal possession of wild animals, keeping protected wildlife without permission, and moving wild animals without appropriate documentation. The Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation has 67 wild animals on its controlled list under the Preserved and Protected Wildlife Law. Lions are one of the ten deemed dangerous, along with animals like the Bornean orangutan, green anaconda, chimpanzee, Sumatran orangutan, jaguar, cheetah, gorilla, mountain gorilla, and dwarf chimpanzee. Trade of these animals is permitted only by licensed farms. The law does allow private individuals and zoos to import or possess dangerous animals, but they must adhere to specific rules and regulations. Any individual holding a controlled animal must inform the authorities and secure permission. Permits are granted only after ensuring the holders can provide good living conditions for the animals, by animal welfare norms, and guarantee public safety. Prasert Sornsathapornkul, the director of the Wild Fauna and Flora Protection Division, stated that many wild animal owners lack a proper understanding of the law. He emphasised that while the law permits possession of such animals, it is crucial to maintain a safe habitat that doesn’t jeopardise or disrupt the community. The extent of lion ownership The department’s records show that 223 lions are owned by 37 individuals across the country. The inspection process is expected to conclude by March, which may provide a clearer perspective on dealing with this issue. Prasert also noted that owning lions has become a status symbol among the wealthy due to the animals’ high value, with prices exceeding 100,000 baht (US$2,783), reported Bangkok Post. However, concerns have been raised about the possibility of wildlife crimes, such as the sale of lion skin, sex organs, and teeth. Edwin Wiek, founder of Wildlife Friends Foundation Thailand (WFFT), has urged the department to reject individual ownership of lions. He warned of potential issues in the future where owners, unable to care for the animals, may abandon them with the department, leading to a misuse of taxpayers’ money. He also discovered a pig farm in Chachoengsao province that kept more than ten lions, raising suspicions about their intended trade. In related news, Thai police and wildlife officers launched a manhunt for a lion cub used for tourism in Phuket. Legal proceedings ensued as authorities investigated the cub’s ownership and transportation. 10. Thailand’s political landscape has long been dominated by the saga of Thaksin Shinawatra, a figure who polarizes opinion like few others in the nation’s recent history. With his recent release on parole and return to his mansion in Bangkok, after serving a commuted one-year sentence for corruption and abuse of power, a chapter that has captivated, divided, and at times, paralyzed Thai politics, might finally be drawing to a close. Thaksin’s journey from a telecoms magnate to Thailand’s most successful elected leader, and then to a convict in self-imposed exile, encapsulates the struggles of a nation caught between the old guard and the push for a more inclusive, democratic system. His populist policies endeared him to the rural poor, even as they alarmed the conservative elites and royalists, leading to his ousting by a military coup in 2006 and subsequent legal battles. The circumstances of Thaksin’s incarceration and release—his avoidance of jail time due to health issues and the commutation of his sentence —have sparked debate. Critics argue that it exemplifies the double standards in Thai justice, where the wealthy and powerful receive leniency not afforded to ordinary citizens. This perception of privilege has reignited calls for a more equitable legal system, a sentiment echoed by the Move Forward Party, which has criticized the entrenched disparities. 12. A Chinese woman, allegedly lured and assaulted in a remote area near Pattaya, survived an attempt on her life after the assailant reportedly set the surrounding grassland on fire. The incident took place on February 18, and police are now investigating the mystery, examining all available evidence, including CCTV footage from the day of the crime. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod The harrowing ordeal began when the woman and her younger brother were reportedly seeking a ride near Thai Garden on Highway 331, about 10 kilometres from the crime scene. Two Thai men on motorcycles offered them a lift, which they accepted, each riding pillion on separate bikes. However, the journey took a terrifying turn when the men diverted into the woods, about 400 meters from Rural Road 2801, and the assault took place. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod At the scene, a desolate grassland next to a cassava plantation, the authorities found the Chinese national, referred to as Mei Lin (a pseudonym), aged 29, and her 19 year old brother, Chen (a pseudonym). The woman appeared disheveled, with her wrists showing signs of being bound and a state of panic evident in her demeanor. According to her account, after failing to complete the assault, the perpetrator smeared lotion on her body, possibly to obscure fingerprints, and doused the area with fuel before igniting a fire, intending to eliminate her as a witness, reported KhaoSod. Photo courtesy of KhaoSod In a desperate bid for survival, Mei Lin managed to burn through the ropes binding her wrists and sought help from her brother, eventually alerting the police. The police, led by Lieutenant Colonel Jeerasak Aebfaeng from Nong Prue Police Station and Lieutenant Colonel Piyapong Ensarn from the Pattaya Tourist Police, conducted an extensive interview with the victim and initiated a thorough investigation, noting several inconsistencies in her account. Despite the lack of visible struggle marks on her clothes, the police are awaiting detailed medical examination results and DNA evidence to verify the claims. The authorities are determined to bring justice to the victim, delving into the minutiae of the case, including potential motives and the exact timeline of events. The case remains shrouded in mystery, with ongoing efforts to cross-reference the victim’s statements with in-depth analyses and CCTV footage from the area. by Nattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Source: The Thaiger 2024-02-19 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 16. Last week, the Thai government announced something that seemed to go under the radar of many of our readers and the media, perhaps drowned out a bit by the parole of Thaksin Shinawatra or neverending U-turns on the status of the Cannabis Draft Law. That something is medical coverage for foreign tourists, with some conditions. Get a recap of the official press release from the Thai Government PR department here before reading further if you aren’t sure what we are referring to. This is decent news but as always with programs like this, there are a lot of fine print and regulations. Quality personal health insurance from a reputable company would always be preferable to an official government plan, of course. However, the fact the government is even implementing this program at all is certainly a positive thing. So, we covered the basics of the plan in another article as stated above, this article will mainly focus on what it won’t cover. It won’t cover illegal or reckless behaviour. So despite being one of the most reported incidents in which foreigners need health insurance, if you were driving a motorbike without a proper license, helmet, vehicle insurance, registration, or under the influence while driving, or driving recklessly/speeding, you won’t be covered.
