  3. Thaksin’s parole won’t alter Thailand’s politics, says Pheu Thai by Top Photo by Sakchai Lalit via AP Pheu Thai Party Deputy Leader Chusak Sirinil recently threw light on the potential impact of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra‘s impending parole, stating that it won’t significantly alter the political landscape of the nation. 4. Pheu Thai Party Deputy Leader Chusak Sirinil recently threw light on the potential impact of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra‘s impending parole, stating that it won’t significantly alter the political landscape of the nation. He expressed confidence in the current government’s performance and the prime minister’s full functionality, dismissing the speculations of major changes anticipated by many political observers. Chusak reinforced the party’s belief that criticism is welcomed but should be confined within the legal framework to prevent the emergence of division or discord. When asked about Thaksin’s return strengthening the Pheu Thai Party, Chusak put forth that the party’s strength should be built on the expertise and capabilities of its existing personnel, reported The Pattaya News. Yet, he acknowledged that the 74 year old Thaksin holds a unifying role for everyone associated with the Pheu Thai Party. Chusak also addressed queries about whether Thaksin’s parole could incite social conflicts. He redirected this concern to the ongoing judicial process stating that it should decide on the matter. Chusak’s statements come amid the speculations surrounding the political implications of the former PMr’s parole. Thaksin, who was ousted from power following a military coup in 2006, was living in self-imposed exile to avoid a corruption conviction he claims was politically motivated. His return to Thailand sparked a wide array of speculations, with analysts divided on its potential impact on the country’s political fabric. by Top Photo by Sakchai Lalit via AP Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 13. PM Would Dissolve House Rather Than Resign Over Possible Digital Wallet Fiasco By Thai Newsroom Reporters Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin. Photo: Thai Rath PRIME MINISTER SRETTHA Thavisin would ultimately choose to dissolve the House of Representatives and call a general election rather than resign if the Pheu Thai digital wallet campaign was eventually rejected at parliament, according to a partisan source. 14. PRIME MINISTER SRETTHA Thavisin would ultimately choose to dissolve the House of Representatives and call a general election rather than resign if the Pheu Thai digital wallet campaign was eventually rejected at parliament, according to a partisan source. Srettha has earlier confided to some of his personal associates that he would rather choose to dissolve the House instead of stepping down in face of possibility a legislation to find a sum of 500 billion baht in loan to finance the Pheu Thai populist handout campaign was eventually rejected by a majority of lawmakers, said the partisan source who only spoke on condition of anonymity. Given the purported magnitude of the populist project pledged by the core coalition partner to the people nationwide during last year’s electoral campaign, the planned legislation is ultimately supposed to sail through both the executive and legislative branches otherwise the Pheu Thai-backed prime minister would merely opt out by dissolving the House so that a nationwide election may be held in 60 days. Instead of resigning in the face of a possible fiasco over the contentious populist handout campaign, Srettha would rather return the power to the people, thus putting an end to the current Pheu Thai-led coalition government after less than a year in power following last year’s election. 16. MOVE FORWARD LEADER Chaithawat Tulathon said today (Feb.15) Thailand might probably be run simultaneously by two prime ministers after de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict Thaksin Shinawatra has been released on parole. Apart from Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin legally tasked with the running of the country, the de facto Pheu Thai boss-cum-convict might practically do the same, albeit in surreptitious, behind-the-scenes fashion, now that the “sickly” former prime minister has been granted parole and is expected to return home from Police Hospital on the upcoming Sunday, said the Move Forward leader, who concurrently performs as opposition leader at parliament. “There might probably be two prime ministers at the same time. (Thaksin) might suddenly look healthy and kicking after release on parole and go places to visit the people throughout the country,” Chaithawat said. 21. The Ministry of Public Health held a meeting today, February 15, to deliberate on the potential abolition of the time restriction for alcohol sales, currently set between 11am and 2pm. However, the meeting failed to reach a clear conclusion. The Public Health Minister, Chonlnan Srikaew, reported that the proposal to cancel the time limit for alcohol sales was submitted to the ministry and the Office of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Commission. Despite objections from various groups, a meeting must be held to explore the possibility of lifting the restrictions. Cholnan ensured that he and other relevant departments would listen to public opinions and prioritise public health and safety. The meeting to discuss the topic was held today, February 15, but there was no clear conclusion or direction launched from the authorities. The Director General of the Disease Control Department, Thongchai Kiratihattayakorn, stated that the ministry had not yet decided on the removal of the time limit. Thongchai said the ministry had only health data but did not have business and economic data, so they were unable to consider the matter thoroughly. by Petch Petpailin Photo by Sérgio Alves Santos via Unsplash Full story: The Thaiger 2024-02-16 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 23. A two-day ordeal of domestic abuse in Nonthaburi ended with police intervention after a 13 year old boy mistakenly dialled the emergency number while seeking medical help for his mother. The woman, a landlady, was found locked in a room and severely beaten by her younger, drug-addicted partner who was suspected of infidelity. In the quiet soi of Samakkhi 49, Nonthaburi province, a harrowing incident of domestic violence unfolded, leading to a much-needed police rescue. Yesterday at 7.30pm, officers from Rattanathibet Police Station were alerted to a case of a woman being physically assaulted and confined for two days. Rushing to the scene, they discovered the 49 year old landlady in a physically battered state, her face swollen from the violent attack. The woman, whose full name is withheld for privacy, revealed that her boyfriend, identified only as A, was the perpetrator. He had become increasingly paranoid while under the influence of drugs, convinced that she was secretly communicating with another man. 24. Is Thailand’s love-hate relationship with legal cannabis coming to an end? File photo Cannabis has soared in popularity among Thais since being removed from the narcotics list two years ago and launched into an almost unregulated market. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1320003-is-thailand’s-love-hate-relationship-with-legal-cannabis-coming-to-an-end/
  25. Cannabis has soared in popularity among Thais since being removed from the narcotics list two years ago and launched into an almost unregulated market. Estimates suggest the number of cannabis users in Thailand has rocketed 10 times to about 10 million – around one in seven people – since it became the first country in Asia to decriminalize the herb. However, the “ganja good times” could soon be over, with the Pheu Thai-led government pushing for a ban on recreational use. The dramatic U-turn comes amid complaints from non-users who want nothing to do with cannabis but say they are still being affected by its soaring popularity. “I was sitting high up in a stadium at a concert but the cannabis smoke still reached me,” one music fan lamented recently. “When I took a toilet break, I also found smokers there.” He wants authorities to do more to control marijuana use, pointing out that despite its well-publicized benefits, it is also associated with harmful effects. That’s why the plant was banned by law and placed on the narcotics list for decades before the Bhumjaithai Party fulfilled its key election policy to decriminalize the herb in 2022. The initial law change, back in 2019, allowed cannabis to be used for medical purposes only. However, a lack of regulation has paved the way for marijuana to be sold widely as a recreational drug and also used as an ingredient in food, beverages, cosmetics, and more. Cannabis was removed from the narcotics list in June 2022, but extracts containing more than 0.2% of its psychoactive component, THC, are still categorized as a Category 5 narcotic. However, the regulations do not cover ganja in its raw form, so stalls and shops selling “weed” and its paraphernalia have mushroomed across the country and online.
