Thailand’s Land Bridge project eyed for boosting economy amid local concerns
Thailand’s Land Bridge project, a major infrastructure initiative resembling a proposed shortcut through Southeast Asia, dominated the recent mobile Cabinet meeting in Ranong. Residents expressed apprehensions to Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, highlighting potential environmental damage and disruptions to their lifestyle. In the face of forecasted stagnant GDP growth, the government views the Land Bridge project as a promising solution for attracting large-scale foreign investment. The funding for this initiative is anticipated to come from the private sector through a public-private partnership (PPP). This proposed logistics shortcut, featuring deep-sea ports, railways, and a new economic zone, is not a novel idea for Southeast Asia. The Dawei economic zone in Myanmar, which remains suspended, aimed to establish a new logistics route connecting inland freight within Southeast Asia to a Dawei port, effectively bypassing the Malacca Strait. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of iStock Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Buffalo calf rescued after horn entanglement in Buriram
A peculiar incident occurred yesterday, January 27, when a buffalo calf, entangled in the curved horns of its grandmother, was rescued in Buriram. Despite numerous attempts, the rescue team failed to free the calf, ultimately requiring a veterinarian to safely remove part of the horns using a saw. This is reported to be the first case of its kind, though horn trimming in buffaloes with excessively curved and long horns is quite common. The incident took place at the residence of Wichit Sarapanya, known as Uncle Piak, where the calf, named Phet, roughly one year old, found itself ensnared in the horns of five year old Dam, the grandmother buffalo of the calf. Wichit speculated that the calf had been trapped since the afternoon after he tied the two buffaloes under a tree near his home. Rescue workers tried to pry the horns apart to release the calf, but the buffalo’s squirming and the extreme curvature of the horns complicated their efforts. After nearly an hour, they called for the district veterinary officer for assistance, reported Sanook. by Samantha Rose Picture courtesy of Sanook Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai Airways: A Downward Spiral of Service, Accountability, and National Pride
Five years ago, in 2018, Thai Airways proudly ranked the 10th best airline in the world, according to Skytrax. Fast forward to today, the airline has fallen to 40th. Amidst plumetting rankings and the precarious financial situation it’s in, customers are suffering the ramifications and repercussions of its declining policies and services. The Deterioration of Thai Airways’ Miles Program Thai Airways filed for bankruptcy protection in 2020 during Covid and are currently completing their restructuring. But even before Covid, the airline underwent a restructuring of their mileage program, devaluing their miles immensely. In October 2019, miles needed for certain reward seats more than doubled. The airline also doesn’t allow “pooling” of miles, so if you have miles spread across different family members, you can’t transfer them to each other to be utilized. This contrasts with other airlines in the region, such as Korean Air, whose “Family Plan” allows you to pool miles from up to five different family members. Transferring miles to other accounts is also possible on Hong Kong’s Cathay Pacific. by Tessa Charupatanapongse Full story: THAI ENQUIRER 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Delivery truck with parcels sinks in Chao Phraya River, goods lost
A delivery truck plunged into the Chao Phraya River near Wat Klang Kred pier, carrying a full load of parcels destined for customers. The incident, which caused significant damage and required several hours for vehicle recovery, has highlighted the vulnerability of goods in transit despite the increasingly common practice of insuring them against loss or damage. The rise of online shopping has led to a boom in the logistics sector, with a plethora of companies, both state-owned and private, offering delivery services. These services often include insurance for goods to protect against loss or damage, with terms and conditions set by the respective companies. However, it is uncertain whether each delivery will reach its destination without incident, reported KhaoSod. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Red sea conflicts could disrupt global trade, Thai economy at risk
The business world is on high alert as the ongoing conflicts in the Red Sea and the Israel-Hamas war pose potential risks to the global economy. The strategic planning unit of the Commerce Ministry is urging stakeholders to keep a close watch on the situation and its potential implications. The conflicts could bring both direct and indirect negative impacts on the Thai economy, warns Poonpong Naiyanapakorn, the director-general of the Trade Policy and Strategy Office (TPSO). The Red Sea, a vital global trade route, has become a bottleneck since Yemen-based Houthi rebels started seizing cargo vessels associated with Israel on November 19 last year. The rebels’ actions, a response to Israel’s actions in Gaza, have complicated the passage through the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait. Poonpong notes that continued attacks could disrupt various supply chains and the transportation of global crude oil. Connecting Asia to Europe, the Red Sea via the Suez Canal in Egypt accommodates 12% of the world’s maritime trade. However, the attacks on cargo ships have led many global shipping companies to suspend their operations in the Red Sea, opting for alternative, longer routes. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of iStock Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Young woman brutally murdered in Si Sa Ket
In a chilling incident, a merciless assailant used a firearm to fatally shoot a 25-year-old woman in front of her residence in the town of Si Sa Ket. The victim, identified as Jiraphan Linson, was found lifeless on a Honda Wave parked outside, initially discovered dancing on a morlam stage before her tragic demise. On January 29, Captain Kamonlak Samsaidee, deputy head of the Si Sa Ket Police Investigation Unit, received a report of a shooting at house number 114 in Sam Subdistrict, Mueang District, Si Sa Ket. Immediately, officials, including Lieutenant Colonel Sarawut Khamnoi, deputy commander of the Si Sa Ket Provincial Police, and Captain Pradit Ob-oon, superintendent of the Si Sa Ket Provincial Police Station, rushed to the scene, reported Daily News. The lifeless body of Jiraphan Linson was discovered with a large gunshot wound penetrating her forehead, causing a horrifying exit wound on her face. The incident is suspected to be a result of a shooting from behind. Witnesses recounted that during the incident, a loud gunshot was heard, prompting bystanders to investigate. The assailant fled the scene before onlookers could identify the victim. The homeowner, 63-year-old Thong Samut, revealed that no one was home during the incident due to a village event, and they were unaware of the tragedy until later. Investigations suggest that the victim, originally from Surin province, might have been involved in a romantic dispute or faced animosity within the community. Prior to the incident, she was seen dancing on the morlam stage, possibly becoming the target due to personal issues. Authorities are actively pursuing leads to apprehend the perpetrator in accordance with the law. -- ASEAN NOW 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai agencies promote youth political participation amid rising issues
A rise in youth problems related to drugs, violence, mental health deterioration, and financial woes has spurred Thai government agencies to promote greater youth political participation and heed the voices of the young. An event titled Learn Len Hen Local, showcasing the initiatives of the Children and Youth Council of Thailand (CYCT), was recently conducted by the Department of Local Administration (DLA) under the Ministry of Interior, along with the Thai Health Promotion Foundation (ThaiHealth) and Social Innovation and Youth (SIY). The event took place at the TK Palace Hotel & Convention in Bangkok. Deputy Director of the DLA, Surabhon Jarernmee, highlighted the rights of the young generation to voice their opinions, as stated in the United Nations Children’s Fund’s Convention on the Rights of the Child. The government’s efforts to uphold this right were emphasised, along with the DLA’s role in propelling CYCT initiatives that encourage the youth’s involvement in local policy formation. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Chanat Katanyu Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Update: British teacher arrested for sexual assault in Thailand
More details have emerged on the international school teacher in Thailand who sexually abused four young students aged seven to eight. David Brown, a 49 year old teacher from Tynemouth, Tyne and Wear, stands accused of luring children into his office during dinner breaks for purported extra English lessons. The horrifying revelations claim that Brown engaged in sex acts with at least four different girls over an undisclosed period at the £6,600-a-year (approximately 300,000 baht) institution on the outskirts of the Thai capital. The sinister acts came to light when a vigilant teacher, overhearing unsettling conversations among the girls, blew the lid off Brown’s alleged misdeeds. The arrest took place on January 24 at 6am, leaving Brown’s wife, present at the scene, horrified. He collapsed, received medical attention, and was subsequently questioned at the police station. Police Colonel Jirawat Piampinseth, leading the investigation issued a statement. “Parents of four children have filed complaints claiming that Brown took the children to his office to teach them English and then sexually abused them.” The police are now delving into the duration of the purported abuse and the possibility of more victims. Having been employed at the Siam International School since at least September 2017, Brown is now under intense scrutiny. David’s wife acted as an interpreter. “He has been detained in a cell at the station while the investigation continues.” by Puntid Tantivangphaisal Photo courtesy of The Mirror UK Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Suphanburi crackdown nets 20 for illegal racing and noise complaints
Suphanburi police have arrested over 20 motorcyclists following complaints from locals about frequent late-night disturbances. The operation, led by Police Lieutenant Colonel Peerapoj Rawangban, the Superintendent of Muang Suphanburi Police Station, and his deputy, Police Lieutenant Tawan Vatanarangsan, took place at the Ban Pho intersection in Muang district, Suphanburi province. The crackdown on illegal racing came after residents reported being fed up with the noise and nuisance caused by teenagers gathering to race their motorcycles during the night. Officers from Muang Suphanburi Police Station, numbering more than 20, planned and executed the operation after gathering intelligence on the group’s activities. They apprehended 20 individuals, confiscating their motorcycles and bringing them in for processing. For those under 18, the police called their parents to retrieve them and guide every case. The authorities have recorded all 20 cases, with most involving young individuals, and have kept the motorcycles for further legal action. The police station has warned the youth not to engage in activities that disturb the public, emphasizing the legal consequences of fines, imprisonment, and vehicle confiscation. byNattapong Westwood Photo courtesy of KhaoSod Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-29 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
