  1. Pita Limjaroenrat’s vow to go to Government House is either a cryptic comment or an off-the-cuff remark that did not mean much. What is certain is that if he was alluding to the chief executive post, it can be a long and winding journey. The first bump on the new road will be next week’s court ruling on whether Article 112 can be spoken of during an election campaign as imperfect and better off amended. While what the court says may not immediately affect Pita, future consequences can be highly volatile. This is why Move Forward has not celebrated too much and too early. Last Wednesday’s Constitutional Court verdict was clear-cut in saying that an election candidate’s illegal possession of shares is wrong, no matter how little and regardless of whether those shares concerns inheritance. Pita survived because iTV’s contractual right to operate TV business had been stopped by the rightful authorities. While there was big, documented evidence of the termination, there was no tangible evidence (such as licenses) of iTV operating other media businesses. 3. The Association of Thai Travel Agents (Atta) anticipates a surge in Chinese tourists during the Lunar New Year holiday, estimating daily arrivals of 20,000 to 25,000. Atta President, Sisdivachr Cheewarattanaporn, attributes this boost to enhanced charter and scheduled flights, alongside the visa-free scheme designed to spur Chinese demand. Chinese arrivals have shown a marked increase this year, averaging 15,000 to 19,000 visitors daily, a significant leap compared to the same period last year. The number is expected to spike to 25,000 per day during the Lunar New Year holiday next month, informed by strong tour bookings. The majority of Chinese tourists initially land in Bangkok, before venturing to nearby attractions such as Pattaya, with others considering a secondary destination like Chiang Mai or Phuket. China remains the top inbound market as of January 21, with 306,805 arrivals, outpacing Malaysia, which recorded 218,453 arrivals. “If the country can maintain the positive momentum until after the Lunar New Year, gaining 8 million Chinese tourists this year might be possible, assuming Thailand can earn tourism confidence from stringent safety measures,” Sisdivachr Sisdivachr stated. He also noted that safety concerns regarding Thailand have significantly subsided among Chinese tourists. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of iStock Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 9. A 31 year old man was apprehended in Kanchanaburi after stealing a Thailand Post delivery truck that was left running by the driver. Yesterday (January 25) at approximately 12.30pm, the man, identified only by his first name, Wiroj, seized the opportunity to hijack the vehicle in Ratchaburi province. The incident, captured on CCTV, occurred when the delivery driver stepped away from the idling truck to attend to a customer. The opportunistic thief, who had initially passed by on a bicycle, doubled back and drove off in the unattended truck. Surveillance footage from the area of Ban Pong district showed Wiroj cycling past the parked delivery truck. Moments later, he returned on foot, noticing the driver had left the engine running. In a swift move, he opened the door and took control of the vehicle, leaving the driver, who spotted the theft too late, helpless. 10. Thai baht could depreciate further against US dollar, says K-Research by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of iStock The Thai baht, already experiencing a downward trend, could further depreciate against the US dollar, potentially reaching 36 baht to a dollar, according to Kasikorn Research Centre (K-Research). 11. The Thai baht, already experiencing a downward trend, could further depreciate against the US dollar, potentially reaching 36 baht to a dollar, according to Kasikorn Research Centre (K-Research). This forecast is contingent upon robust US economic data, set to be released later this week, which could indicate a resilient US economy. Additionally, any delays in the Federal Reserve’s proposed trimming of interest rates could contribute to this scenario. K-Research has noted continued capital outflows due to Thailand’s weaker-than-expected economic results. The baht was trading between 35.76-78 against the US dollar on Thursday, a slight depreciation from Wednesday’s closing rate of 35.68, following the release of the US Manufacturing and Services Purchasing Managers’ Indices for January. Both indices recorded their highest levels in over half a year, causing the baht to tumble to a two-month low of 35.88 during Wednesday’s trading. Kanjana Chockpisansin, head of research at K-Research, suggested that these signs of resilience within the US manufacturing and service sectors could influence the Federal Reserve to maintain its high-interest rates for a longer period, given that inflation remains above the central bank’s target. She anticipates the earliest rate cuts to occur in the second quarter of this year. However, the Thai economy’s outlook remains precarious, lacking the fundamental factors required to stimulate growth. Kanjana revealed that as of January 24, the Thai stock market had seen fund outflows totalling 23.9 billion baht (US$668 million) year-to-date, with foreign investors also selling Thai bonds worth 5.9 billion baht (US$165 million). by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of iStock Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-26 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
