Thai police intensify crackdown on juvenile delinquency following brutal murder
In response to a recent brutal murder committed by five teenagers in Sa Kaeo’s Aranyaprathet district, Thai police are intensifying efforts to combat juvenile delinquency across the country. The murder of a middle-aged woman earlier this month has sparked a nationwide crackdown on criminal acts perpetrated by young offenders, an operation ordered by National police chief Torsak Sukvimol. Torsak has given the Sa Kaeo police chief a mandate to maintain records on all juvenile delinquents in the province. He has also directed local law enforcement to pay particular attention to teens between the ages of 10 and 15 who stay outdoors after 10pm. If these teens are found unaccompanied after this hour, their details will be recorded, and their parents brought in for questioning. In provinces like Nonthaburi and Samut Prakan, which frequently record incidents involving unruly youths but are lacking sufficient police officers to address the issue, the Provincial Special Operation Sub-Division will offer support in the crackdown, reported Bangkok Post. Additionally, Torsak announced that the results of an investigation into the alleged misconduct of two police officers from the Aranyaprathet district police station have been forwarded to the National Anti-Corruption Commission. The officers stand accused of coercing Panya Khongsaenkham into a false confession of the brutal murder of his mentally unstable wife, Buaphan Tansu, known locally as Pa Kob. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai government officials inspect 1-trillion-baht Land Bridge megaproject amid environmental concerns
by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Government House On January 21, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin, Interior Minister Anutin Charnvirakul and Transport Minister Suriya Jungrungreangkit embarked on an official visit to the Andaman region, with Ranong, the site of the 1-trillion-baht Land Bridge megaproject, as their first stop. The project, expected to generate significant benefits across the southern region, is facing criticism due to its potential environmental impact. The officials inspected a construction site at Laem Son National Park in the Kapoe district before heading to Laem Ao Ang in the Muang district. Here, they received a comprehensive report from the project committee focusing on areas requiring reclamation and a spatial plan for bridge piers to support the local fishery industry. The Land Bridge megaproject, which aims to connect Ranong province with Chumphon province, comprises deep-water ports in both provinces, an interconnecting motorway, and a railway system. The project, costing 1 trillion baht (US$28 billion), also aims to alleviate congestion on the Strait of Malacca, through which 60% of the world’s oil supply passes, reported Bangkok Post. “Constructing a megaproject that links the Gulf of Thailand and the Andaman Sea to the world is important to lessen congestion,” stated Prime Minister Srettha. “It will also bring development to the country, as it can influence more foreign investors.” Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Protesters intensify demonstrations over Thaksin Shinawatra’s preferential treatment
The Students and People’s Network for Thailand Reform (STR) are intensifying their demonstrations over the alleged preferential treatment of Thaksin Shinawatra, the convicted former prime minister. The protesters are set to stage a sit-in outside the Government House starting February 2. According to Pichit Chaimongkol, the STR leader, there are plans to protest indefinitely alongside other groups that are targeting agencies where the STR had previously submitted petitions concerning the issue. Earlier, between January 12 and 14, the STR had organised demonstrations at the Government House. They demanded the government uphold judicial standards about Thaksin, who has overstayed his 120-day limit for inpatient treatment at the Police General Hospital without being imprisoned. His inpatient care was scheduled to end on December 22. Pichit disclosed that the demonstrators will send a petition to the president of the Supreme Court. The petition requests the court to establish a panel to scrutinize the National Anti-Corruption Commission’s handling of the case. The petition, which requires 20,000 signatures, reportedly enjoys widespread support across the country. Pichit is confident they will gather the necessary signatures before Thaksin qualifies for parole on February 22. Pichit also raised doubts about Deputy Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai’s assertion that Thaksin’s treatment outside of prison is lawful. He noted that no other prisoner had been given the same treatment as Thaksin. 74 year old Thaksin was admitted to the Police General Hospital soon after his return to Thailand on August 22. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of The Irrawaddy Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Is cannabis legal for foreigners in Thailand? Know the rules
Thailand’s stance on cannabis has undergone a significant transformation, making it a hot topic among entrepreneurs and tourists alike. With the plant’s removal from the Category 5 narcotics list on June 9th, 2022, the gates have seemingly opened for a burgeoning cannabis industry. But what does this mean for foreigners looking to partake in or start a cannabis business in this vibrant country? The new regulations have sparked interest worldwide, promising opportunities in a market that’s ripe for innovation. However, it’s not a free-for-all; the Thai government has put in place specific measures to ensure the industry thrives responsibly. Foreigners eyeing this green rush must navigate the legalities, from possession limits to cultivation rules. For those considering a cannabis venture in Thailand, understanding the legal landscape is crucial. While the country shows a progressive approach, it’s essential to grasp the nuances of the law to ensure compliance. After all, starting a business in a foreign land comes with its set of challenges, and the cannabis sector is no exception. What are the current cannabis laws? Photo by Matteo Paganelli on Unsplash Thailand made a significant policy shift on June 9th, 2022, as the government decriminalized cannabis by removing it from the Category 5 narcotics list. This landmark decision permits Thai citizens to cultivate and vend cannabis, exclusively for medical purposes, transforming the industry’s dynamics overnight. Regulatory efforts followed swiftly to ensure controlled growth. Personal use of cannabis is now permissible; however, it’s confined to private spaces. Public consumption remains strictly illegal, reflecting the government’s caution in balancing new freedoms with social responsibility. This decision has spurred the growth of a cannabis market that’s dynamic yet currently operates in a regulatory gray area. Tourists and foreign nationals should note that while the market is in flux, awareness of the existing framework is paramount. The current state of the law is critical to understand: Eligibility for Cannabis Use: Foreigners must adhere to eligibility requirements, including restraint from public consumption and compliance with medical-use regulations. Who can consume cannabis? As Thailand emerges as a pioneer in Asia by decriminalizing certain aspects of cannabis, the country has seen a rise in intrigue among locals and foreigners alike. However, it’s crucial to understand that there are specific rules that dictate who can legally consume cannabis in this Southeast Asian nation. Where Can You Consume It? The freedom to consume cannabis in Thailand doesn’t mean it’s permissible everywhere. Private properties are often deemed acceptable for consumption, provided the property owner allows it. Nevertheless, there are places where cannabis enthusiasts must tread carefully. Designated smoking areas in some establishments may permit cannabis use, but consuming cannabis in public spaces is a major taboo, enforced with the risk of fines or imprisonment. It’s also worth noting that cannabis edibles are restricted to consumption within authorized restaurants that align with regulated guidelines. by mahatee niramitrsathit Photo by Erik Mclean on Pexels Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Boys aged 14 apprehended for throwing stones at vehicles in Phatthalung
A group of four boys, all aged 14 years old, were apprehended today, for causing mischief by throwing stones at passing vehicles, causing damage and distress. The main victim was a 27 year old motorist called Natthaphong, who was transporting young boxers from Trang province for a competition. The incident occurred on the Manohra bypass road, heading towards the city centre in Phatthalung province. The boys were said to be lurking near the entrance of a housing estate as the vehicles passed by. They then proceeded to hurl stones at the vehicles causing the windshield of Natthaphong’s Toyota Vigo to shatter. The boys then fled into the housing estate. When asked why they had committed such an act, the boys simply claimed they had “nothing to do.” Natthaphong, along with his team of boxers, immediately reported the incident to the police and, together with residents, they initiated a search within the housing estate. After nearly an hour, two of the boys were found hiding in one of the rental houses and another was found in a nearby forest. However, the fourth boy remains at large. by Sugandhi Batra PHOTO via: Kenan Reed FROM:unsplash.com Full story: The Thaiger 2024-01-23 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai Immigration updates online system for 90-day reporting
Online Reporting for Foreigners Staying Over 90 Days in Thailand BANGKOK (TNA) – The Immigration Bureau (IB) has introduced an online reporting system for foreigners staying in Thailand for more than 90 days, marking the first-ever implementation of this service. The initiative, initially targeting investors under the promotion of the Board of Investment (BOI), is expected to stimulate the economy and boost tourism in Thailand. Pol Lt Gen Itthipol Itthisarnronnachai, Commissioner of the Immigration Bureau, along with relevant authorities, announced the commencement of the “90 days online notification” service. This allows foreigners to report their residence status when staying in the kingdom for more than 90 days through an online platform. The system aims to provide convenience to international tourists, enabling them to submit advance notifications 15 days prior to the expiration of their 90-day stay. Notifications can be made at any time through the online portal at www.immigration.go.th. Thai Immigration updates online system for 90-day reporting
The Immigration Bureau announced on Monday a major upgrade to its online system for 90-day reporting. This development is expected to alleviate the chronic overcrowding at Immigration offices across the country. Immigration say the new system will help to streamline the process for foreigners residing in Thailand. Pol Lt Gen Ittipol Ittisaranachai, the chief of Immigration Police, highlighted this expansion plan, emphasizing the Bureau’s commitment to facilitating the stay of international residents in Thailand. Under Thai law, all foreigners residing in the country on various long-term visas, or rather extension of stays, are mandated to report their address to the Immigration Bureau every 90 days. Despite the existence of an online system for several years, its unreliability had forced many to continue visiting the Immigration offices in person, leading to excessive crowding. Responding to the need for a more efficient and user-friendly system, the Bureau has revamped the online service. This upgrade is anticipated to encourage more foreigners to opt for online reporting, thereby reducing the physical footfall at the offices. Bhumjaithai Likely To Be Dissolved Like Future Forward: Academic
THE BHUMJAITHAI UNDER DE FACTO party boss Newin Chidchob would likely be dissolved by court primarily due to questionable donations in cash just like an earlier case of the dissolved Future Forward, according to a noted academic. The National Institute of Development Administration’s Political & Strategic Development Project director Pichai Ratanadilok na Phuket commented the Bhumjaithai would likely be dissolved by the Constitutional Court in foreseeable future if no double standards were otherwise applied in support of Newin’s camp pertaining to some 13 million baht in donation earlier handed to the party from the politically-connected Buri Charoen Construction Ltd. Part., shares of which were ruled by court to have been practically held by his brother/former transport minister Saksayam Chidchob. Buri Charoen Construction is largely known as the Chidchob family’s business based in their home province of Buriram with corporate shares having been zigzagged to be in possession of one of Saksayam’s nominees under whose name the contentious 13 million baht donation had been granted to the coalition party over the past several years. Given the Constitutional Court’s retroactive order to deprive Saksayam of his ministerial seat assumed in the time of a previous government due to his illicitly holding shares in the construction firm, Newin’s brother has recently resigned as Bhumjaithai secretary-general and a party-listed MP.
