Thaksin Must Serve 1-Year Sentence, No More Sentence Reductions, says Wissanu
Deputy Prime Minister 'Wissanu Krua-ngam' has clarified the process following the announcement of sentence reduction in the royal decree. Former Prime Minister 'Thaksin Shinawatra' will be treated like an ordinary prisoner, with no further sentence reductions, signifying an uncompromising exercise of supreme royal authority. reported Daily News On September 1st, Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krua-ngam disclosed over the phone that following the publication of the royal pardon announcement on the official royal gazette website, which reduced Thaksin Shinawatra's sentence to 1 year, normal procedures would be adhered to. Thaksin will be treated like any other regular prisoner. In case of illness during his sentence, he will be transferred back to the prison infirmary. If his health doesn't improve, ongoing medical treatment will be provided. Once the announcement is issued in the royal gazette, it will be immediately enforceable, effective from the moment the decree is made public. Thaksin can no longer seek further royal clemency, having already received a royal pardon, and he must serve the remaining 1-year sentence without the possibility of sentence reduction. This solidifies the assertion of unassailable royal authority. Thapanee Kiatphaiboon began her role as new TAT Governor
Bangkok, 1 September 2023 – Ms. Thapanee Kiatphaiboon today began her role as the new Governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT). Having been with the TAT in 1999 after earning a master’s degree in science from the University of Surrey in the UK, Ms. Thapanee has held various positions within the organisation, including Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business, and most recently Deputy Governor for Domestic Marketing. In her most recent role as TAT Deputy Governor for Domestic Marketing, Ms. Thapanee initiated various tourism initiatives to help drive Thailand’s economy. Among them included the workation in Thailand, faith and religious tourism routes, and solo travels – which helped stimulate 151.45 million domestic trips in 2022 – about 88% of the record year in 2019 – and generated 641.5 billion Baht. In her role as Deputy Governor for Tourism Products and Business, Ms. Thapanee was recognised for her leadership in initiating the Amazing Thailand Safety and Health Administration (SHA) certification programme that enabled hotels and services to meet specific health and safety standards. The programme became a mandatory requirement for hotels seeking to register as quarantine facilities during the period of strict COVID-19 control measures and also received global recognition in alignment with the WTTC SafeTravels protocols. She also initiated the Special Tourist Visa (STV) scheme to promote the reopening of Thailand, which led to subsequent entry schemes, including Villa Quarantine, Yacht Quarantine and Golf Quarantine, as well as the Phuket Sandbox, which has been recognised internationally as the model for the country’s reopening. Recognised as a social media and technology savvy individual, Ms. Thapanee has played a key role in utilising technology and social media in the promotion and development of Thailand’s tourism. Some of her outstanding achievements in this area have included the Google Street View project in cooperation with Google Thailand, and the ‘Amazing Thailand’ social media platforms. As an advocate of Thailand’s tourism, Ms. Thapanee has been instrumental in the development of various special interest tourism products, including health and wellness tourism, yacht and cruise tourism, and community tourism, as well as the “King’s Wisdom for Sustainable Tourism” project, which won the PATA Grand Awards 2018 in the category of Education and Training. In her earlier years with the TAT, Ms. Thapanee was widely recognised for her contribution towards the promotion and development of intra-regional travel within the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS). Red shirts to scatter and take various forms
Thaksin Shinawatra’s leaning toward the establishment, the new governing coalition bringing together past ideological rivals, and the rise of the Move Forward Party with its own die-hard supporters all point to the high possibility that the red-shirt movement will become splintered with some of its elements more extreme than others. Will the red shirts remain a political force to be reckoned with? Possibly but tough. Possibly because Pheu Thai, which they support, is being forced to compromise, not exactly willing to do so. This means that there is always a chance the red shirts will return to their characteristic aggression. Tough because even if Pheu Thai wants to make another U-turn yet, such a move will be difficult for obvious reasons. If Pheu Thai finds it hard to manoeuvre, so will the red shirts. The movement will have many shades. Very likely, some red shirts will become benign, others will maintain the trademarked rebellious attitude, and some others still will turn “orange” completely after disavowing Pheu Thai. What happens to the Srettha coalition will determine which group is the biggest and then the long-term future of the movement. Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok: New income documentation requirements
The Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok and consulates in Pattaya and Phuket has been forced to change the document requirement for confirmation of annual income on a short notice. “Norwegian citizens in Thailand may need confirmation of their income/pension from Norway in connection with the extension of a one-year visa. In this connection, they ask the embassy to confirm annual income/pension. As it is the annual income that needs to be confirmed, we have required presentation of the latest annual statement from NAV or the latest tax return. The Embassy has changed its practice and will no longer calculate future income based on documentation of monthly payments,” they write in on their Facebook page. by Sofie Rønnelund Photo: Royal Norwegian Embassy in Bangkok Full story: https://scandasia.com/norwegian-embassy-in-bangkok-new-income-documentation-requirements/ -- ScandAsia 2023-09-02 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Each Time House Meeting Collapses Through Lack Of Quorum ‘8.2m Baht Is Wasted’
AFTER the House of Representatives meeting yesterday (Aug. 31) was adjourned through a lack of quorum, a Move Forward MP calculated that each time this occurs over 8.2 million baht is wasted, Sanook.com said today (Sept. 1). At yesterday’s meeting Palang Prachrath MP for Chachoensao Mr. Atthakorn Sirilatthayakon had tabled a motion on solving low shrimp prices. However Move Forward MP for Bangkok Mr. Piyarat Jongthep asked for counting of House quorum after noticing that very few MPs from parties in the coalition government were present. A check by pressing a button to certify presence at the meeting showed less than half of the 498 performing MPs were present, leading to House Speaker Wan Muhamad Noor Matha to adjourning it until next Thursday. by TNR Staff The House of Representatives meeting chamber.
