  2. REAL ESTATE TYCOON-TURNED-Pheu Thai prime-ministerial candidate Srettha Thavisin was again today (Aug.15) doubted he would ever run the country on basis of honesty and good governance, given allegations of his previous involvement in a suspected scam over a mega-million-baht property dealing. In a press conference at a Bangkok hotel, political activist Chuwit Kamolvisit alleged Srettha of involvement in the corruption-ridden, zigzagging property business with the pricey purchase of a parcel of land in a lush Thong Lor area where a luxury condominium was built several years ago. Political activist Chuwit Kamolvisit. Photo: Matichon In his capacity as president of Sansiri Plc., Srettha had approved one billion baht in funding funnelled through Arnawat Co., an affiliate of the giant property firm where he had concurrently performed as director, to a nominee, known by the name of N & N Asset Co. and run by a housewife and a security guard, for the purchase of the Thong Lor land in 2015. The nominee firm had bought the property for 565 million baht, leaving the balance of 435 million baht in payoff, all or part of which might allegedly have slipped into the pocket of the then-president of Sansiri Plc., according to Chuwit. 4. Thailand’s Deputy House Speaker Accused of Illegally Promoting Beer on Social Media By Tanakorn Panyadee Thailand has some of the strictest alcohol laws in the world, and one of them is a prohibition on advertising any alcoholic beverage. This law carries a fine of up to 500,000 baht and a possible one year in imprisonment. Now, Deputy House Speaker of the Thai Parliament Padipat Suntiphada from the Move Forward Party may be in trouble for violating this law after he shared a photo of himself holding a can of what he said was a craft beer from his home province Phitsanulok, north of Thailand. In his Facebook post, Padipat wrote: “Here we go! Phitsanulok now officially has its first craft beer. It’s a unique and high-quality product, which represents our province apart from sun-dried bananas and fried noodles.” The post has since been deleted, but it has not escaped criticism from the public, politicians, and petitioners. Some people are calling for Padipat to resign from his position, arguing that he should adhere to the law and be an exemplary figure for the public, given his esteemed political position. Rames Ratanachaweng, spokesman for the Democrat Party, has rebuked Padipat, calling for him to step down and be investigated for allegedly violating the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act. 10. Efforts to prevent a second power crisis in Thailand are underway as the nation’s primary gas producer, PTT Exploration and Production (PTTEP) Public Company Limited, looks to increase its output substantially. With plans to double gas production in the Erawan field, Thailand’s largest, Montri Rawanchaikul, the Chief Executive Officer, confirmed plans to scale up production to as high as 800 million cubic feet per day by early 2024. Additionally, production at Bongkok, the company’s second largest field, will see a boost of approximately 10% in 2023. These aggressive expansion plans are a response to the scrutiny the company endured in the aftermath of last year’s surge in domestic electricity bills. Produced gas from Erawan had declined drastically by roughly 64% in 2022. Subsequently, power producers were forced to source pricier LNG from international markets, placing undue pressure on citizens from an unexpected increase in electric costs. The incident prompted vocal critique of firms like PTTEP for their failure to step up domestic gas extraction. Emerging as Thailand’s largest source of power, natural gas accounts for over 60% of energy nationwide. However, unexpected surges in the European benchmark, notably the stunning 40% leap on Wednesday, once again stirred concerns over the management of politically sensitive electricity rates, especially in light of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. by Alex Morgan Picture courtesy of PTTEP. 16. Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat has questioned whether he had been a victim of political persecution by the Election Commission (EC). He wrote in his Facebook post today that he would like to know whether the investigative committee had concluded its findings before the EC asked the Constitutional Court to suspend him from performing duty as an MP, even though the EC claims that the investigation process and its petition to the Charter Court are separate issues. Pita referred to previous media shareholding cases, involving about 60 MPs, saying that the Constitutional Court had not ordered any of them to be suspended from performing their duties but, in this case, he was ordered so to do. “I would like to ask society to judge whether such an order is fair or not?” said Pita at the end of his post. He was responding to a report that the EC investigating committee has recommended the EC to drop the charge that he violated the election law for allegedly holding shares in a media firm while filing candidacy in the May-14 election. 21. BANGKOK (NNT) - Thai Airways (THAI) has reported 14.776 billion baht in profits for the first half of 2023, while revealing that delays in forming the new government have yet to impact the number of advance flight bookings. Thai Airways Chief Executive Officer Chai Eamsiri revealed that Thailand’s current political situation has yet to impact the number of advance bookings made with the airline. He further noted that foreigners have become more familiar with the country’s political activities. The CEO also discussed the Excise Department’s re-activation of its 4.72 baht per liter excise collection for jet fuel starting July 1, 2023. The move followed the department’s decision to lower the excise to 20 satang per liter at the beginning of the year. Chai said the excise returning to the previous level has resulted in domestic ticket prices rising by 10-100 baht per ticket, depending on each airline’s costs. For the first six months of 2023, Thai Airways International made 78.889 billion baht in revenue and 14.795 billion baht in net profit. The improved performance was attributed to more frequent flights operated on the airline’s popular routes, as well as those to China and Japan. The executive added that the number of destinations in China has been increased to five, namely Beijing, Shanghai, Kunming, Guangzhou, and Chengdu. The improved results are also believed to stem from debt restructuring and both domestic and international consumers maintaining confidence in the airline. According to Thai Airways executives, 37% of the airline’s passengers currently hail from Europe and 33% from East Asia. Additionally, 10% were from India and Bangladesh and 7% were from Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore. by Paul Rujopakarn Source: https://thainews.prd.go.th/en/news/detail/TCATG230815111205873 -- © Copyright NNT 2023-08-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. The Crossroads of Legacy and Power: A Plea to the Pheu Thai Party by Cod Satrusayang In the theater of politics, where alliances are always shifting, we find ourselves at a crossroad, a juncture where choices made will forever echo in the annals of Thai history. 25. In the theater of politics, where alliances are always shifting, we find ourselves at a crossroad, a juncture where choices made will forever echo in the annals of Thai history. As the Pheu Thai Party contemplates a strategic partnership with the Palang Pracharath Party and the pro-Prayut Chan-ocha Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party, it risks more than just its identity — it risks its soul. It would be both remiss and disingenuous not to remember the roots of the Ruam Thai Sang Chart Party. For in its ranks are those who once wore the mantle of the PDRC, the very individuals responsible for the ousting of Thaksin Shinawatra’s sister, Yingluck. As one casts their memory back, the theatrics of the PDRC protest stage still echo with the vitriol and contempt hurled at the Shinawatra family. The sting of words, once spoken, cannot be unsaid, nor their scars forgotten. At the helm of the Palang Pracharath sits Prawit Wongsuwan, a man whose narrative seems to be painted with a single brush: the tarnishing of the Shinawatra legacy. For two decades, his efforts have been in dismantling the efforts and policies that Thaksin has spent his life building. It’s a dance of vendettas that stretches back years, a tango of political maneuverings and counter-maneuverings. by Cod Satrusayang Full story: https://www.thaienquirer.com/50428/the-crossroads-of-legacy-and-power-a-plea-to-the-pheu-thai-party/ -- © Copyright Thai Enquirer 2023-08-15 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
