  12. A good relationship with the Cambodian government would be a prerequisite for the resumption of negotiations on overlapping claims to natural gas resources in the Gulf of Thailand, experts said, but warned of a return to a cold conflict if there were mutual reservations. The dividends of a diplomatic bonhomie would be high, as together they could exploit an estimated 1 trillion baht worth of energy resources. Political turmoil and bruised nationalism, mostly in Thailand after the military coup in 2006, became a major impediment for progress in talks between the two countries on demarcating the disputed maritime boundaries as well as jointly developing petroleum reserves in the 26,000 square-kilometre area, they said. The issue was discussed at length during a seminar on the overlapping claims of the two countries in the Gulf of Thailand. The event was jointly hosted by Chulalongkorn University’s Faculty of Law and the Foreign Ministry’s Treaties and Legal Affairs Department on August 10, even as the Thai side is still waiting for new guidelines and instructions from the yet-to-be-formed government. 14. Cigarette smoking is super addictive and very bad for the health. Stopping, as any smoker will tell you, is challenging. To boost the success rate of quitting, smokers usually need help, whether from gum, patches, or inhalers. Certain foods and herbs are also used to help kick the habit but come with limitations such as cost, unwanted side effects and unsatisfactory outcomes. To this end, a team of researchers and academics at Naresuan University has created nicotine lozenges made from extract of little ironweed, also known asVernonia cinerea or ya dok khaw in Thai. Early results have shown that the lozenges offer a reasonable level of cigarette withdrawal treatment as well as hope for those who want to quit. The little ironweed lozenge product has been developed through research by a team of scientists and academics from Nareasun University, the Chaophraya Abhaibhubejhr Foundation and the private sector. It’s funded by National Research Council of Thailand. 15. Economic danger signals emerging as politicians wrangle over who will form the next government by Joseph O' Connor The President of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) Thanavath Phonvichai has revealed that consumer confidence in Thailand has fallen for the first time in 14 months as non-performing loans surged in the second quarter to reach ฿1 trillion as China’s economy stalls with US President Joe Biden describing it as a ‘ticking time bomb’ for the world. 16. The President of the University of the Thai Chamber of Commerce (UTCC) Thanavath Phonvichai has revealed that consumer confidence in Thailand has fallen for the first time in 14 months as non-performing loans surged in the second quarter to reach ฿1 trillion as China’s economy stalls with US President Joe Biden describing it as a ‘ticking time bomb’ for the world. A troubling external geo-political environment adds to the sense of danger with US President Joe Biden warning on Friday that China’s economy, on which Thailand has become very much dependent, is a ‘ticking time bomb’ much the same as the country’s private debt sector where non-performing loans are have spiralled out of control in the second quarter of 2023. As Thailand’s politicians wrangle over who will take power amid a well-conceived conservative plot to use the unelected Senate to control the formation of the next government, the country’s economy is manifesting danger signals with a prolonged export slump and a rising problem with private sector debt that may just become explosive. These have combined with political instability concerns to reduce consumer confidence for the first time in 14 months. It fell from 56.7 in June to a current figure of 55.6 and the University reported that three further indexes, including one monitoring confidence in the future and job opportunities, had also dropped in the same period. by Joseph O' Connor Full story: https://www.thaiexaminer.com/thai-news-foreigners/2023/08/12/economic-danger-signals-as-politicians-may-14th-wrangle-china-banking-debt-crisis/ -- © Copyright Thai Examiner 2023-08-14 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. 18. Could Thailand break world record time for forming new govt? Three months have passed since the May 14 general election, and Thailand’s next government is still nowhere in sight. Waiting much longer could very well earn Thailand a place among countries that have suffered the biggest delays in forming governments after elections. However, the kingdom is unlikely to match world record-holder Belgium, which waited almost two years (652 days) between 2019 and 2020 for a new government to be formed. Now though, Thailand is edging closer to Germany, which had been without a new government for about four months after a general election in September 2017. Thailand’s current record Thailand’s current record is 108 days, seen after the previous general election in March 2019. The Palang Pracharath Party, which had then-junta leader General Prayut Chan-o-cha as its sole prime ministerial candidate, managed to form a new government after securing majority support for Prayut in a parliamentary vote. 20. The Constitutional Court has agreed to give Move Forward and its leader Pita Limjaroenrat another 30 days to submit documents in defence of an allegation that their proposal to amend the lèse majesté law amounts to an attempt to overthrow the country’s democratic system with the King as head of state. Court president Worawit Kangsasitiam said today (Saturday) that the party had asked for an extension of the 15 days granted by the court, claiming that there are many documents which they need more time to collect. He explained that the court’s agreement to extend the period for the submission of documents is normal and it does not amount to a privilege.
