Picture courtesy: Wikipedia In an effort to buoy the faltering rice prices within Thailand, the Commerce Ministry is rolling out a series of initiatives designed to stabilise and improve market conditions. As the nation grapples with external challenges influencing local rice rates, the ministry is proactive, unveiling seven targeted measures aimed at revitalising the rice market. At the heart of the issue lies the international landscape, where India's return to the rice export scene and decreased purchases from major importers like Indonesia and the Philippines have contributed to downward price pressure. As of recent reports, prices for Thailand's famous Hom Mali paddy have seen a modest rise to 15,500-16,500 Thai Baht per tonne, reflecting a yearly increase. In contrast, other varieties such as Pathum Thani and non-glutinous rice have faced significant declines, with prices dropping by 16% and 30% respectively. To counter these trends, Commerce Minister Pichai Naripthaphan has set urgent measures in motion. An imminent meeting of the National Rice Policy and Management Subcommittee on Marketing will strategise support mechanisms for farmers hit by these pricing challenges. This plan will then be refined and proposed to the National Rice Policy and Management Committee for final approval. Central to the ministry’s strategy is the organisation of paddy market fairs across 20 provinces, particularly in the Chao Phraya River basin. These gatherings provide a direct platform for farmers to negotiate better rates, potentially increasing paddy prices by 100-200 Thai Baht per tonne. The inaugural fair is already underway in Ayutthaya, with subsequent events scheduled through April. Additionally, expanding Thailand’s export market remains a priority. Mr Pichai's upcoming visit to South Africa aims to finalise a deal to export 300,000 tonnes of Thai rice, valued at more than 5.25 billion Thai Baht. Negotiations are also in progress with China for a similar arrangement, aiming to alleviate domestic surpluses. To further ease market pressures, the ministry has partnered with the Export-Import Bank of Thailand, offering financial support to rice enterprises. This initiative includes facilitating loans to businesses and export operators to boost purchasing and storage capabilities, thereby increasing demand. Looking ahead, the ministry intends to enhance the global profile of Thai rice, featuring it prominently at the Thailand Rice Convention and exploring new markets like the US and Europe. Participation in international trade fairs will further bolster confidence in the quality of Thai rice. "The path to recovery in rice prices is challenging, but with these strategies, we are confident in our ability to support our farmers effectively," assured Mr Pichai, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-02-19

Prasat Ta Muean Thom temple. Picture courtesy: Wikipedia An incident at Prasat Ta Muean Thom temple in Surin has rekindled historical tensions between Thailand and Cambodia, sparking concern among locals and officials alike. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has sought to downplay the situation, urging calm and emphasising diplomatic relations. The incident unfolded when a group of 25 Cambodian women, dressed in traditional garb, visited the temple in Phanom Dong Rak, Surin province, on February 13th. As they began to sing the Cambodian national anthem, Thai soldiers intervened, prompting a heated exchange with a Cambodian military officer. The brief standoff at the 11th-century temple highlighted the sensitive nature of the border area, long contested by both nations. Prime Minister Paetongtarn responded to the incident, stating, "It’s nothing," and reassuring the public of her intent to visit Cambodia soon to smooth over any misunderstandings. "There is no problem," she reiterated, expressing her commitment to maintaining cordial relations. Defence Minister Phumtham Wechayachai elaborated on the situation, underscoring the temple's location on Thai soil despite historical disputes. He noted that while Thailand permits Cambodian visits to the temple, overt symbolic gestures, like singing a national anthem, are discouraged as they can reignite dormant tensions. The historical backdrop of this incident involves the Preah Vihear temple, another flashpoint in Thai-Cambodian relations. Disagreements over the temple's ownership escalated into a military clash in 2008. A subsequent ruling in 2013 by the International Court of Justice delineated the land, attributing areas around the temple to Cambodia, while specifying northern territories as Thai. In the wake of the Surin incident, the Suranaree Task Force submitted a formal request to Cambodia's 4th Military Region, expressing discomfort with the anthem singing. Maj Gen Somphob Pharawet, commander of the task force, has since instructed his troops to prevent the recurrence of such incidents, aiming to keep the peace along the delicate border. As diplomatic efforts continue, both nations are reminded of the delicate balance required to manage their shared history and geography. The Thai government's measured response and commitment to dialogue signal a desire to manage tensions constructively, ensuring stability and cooperation in the region. The overarching goal remains maintaining harmony and goodwill, allowing both nations to focus on mutual growth and development beyond territorial debates, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-02-19

Anutin Dismisses Israeli Pai Takeover Rumours Picture courtesy: Naewna Deputy Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul has addressed the swirling rumours concerning an alleged Israeli control over Pai district, citing them as unfounded and implausible. This pressing issue has drawn significant attention following social media claims of Israelis erecting barriers at a hotel-turned-synagogue, purportedly restricting entry to Thais in Mae Hong Son province. Anutin stressed that legally, foreigners cannot exclude Thai citizens from accessible properties, like hotels or shops, unless they own the land privately. "If any signs have been put up forbidding Thais, they will be promptly removed," Anutin assured, echoing a sentiment of national sovereignty and public access rights. Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has thus slated a visit to Pai next week to personally address and resolve the brewing tensions. When queried about a possible link between these incidents and visa exemptions, Anutin dismissed any correlation, asserting that each policy carries specific timelines and conditions unrelated to such disputes. The matter has not just raised local grievances but has also prompted action from higher authorities. National Police Chief Pol. Gen. Kitrat Phanphet has commanded local law enforcement to sort out these allegations within a week. Pol. Lt. Col. Suwit Bunyaphen, the Tourist Police inspector at Mae Hong Son, elaborated on how social media exaggerations have amplified the situation. Reports of 30,000 Israelis overwhelming the local populace are grossly misleading. Actual figures show these numbers reflect annual visits, with only about 83-84 Israeli tourists staying in Pai daily. Importantly, the cultural vibrancy of Pai draws tourists worldwide, with UK nationals topping the list, succeeded by visitors from Israel, the US, and Germany. The synagogue in question hosts religious ceremonies primarily on Fridays and Saturdays, featuring a dining area accommodating 200 people. Thailand, with seven synagogues dispersed from Bangkok to Phuket, hosts diverse religious practices. While these sanctuaries support cultural and spiritual gatherings, they are part and parcel of Thailand's multicultural fabric, standing by the laws and customs of the land. As authorities swiftly investigate and clarify the situation, the focus remains on dispelling misinformation while fostering international community understanding within Thai borders. With these actions, Anutin and other officials hope to restore peace and mutual respect in this picturesque corner of northern Thailand, reported Thai Newsroom. -- 2025-02-19 -

Picture courtesy: Naewna via Thai Newsroom Thailand's political landscape faces turmoil as reports emerge that up to 138 senators might be implicated in alleged electoral manipulation during last year's senatorial elections. Of the 200 serving senators, those suspected are believed to have engaged in practices compromising the integrity of a complex three-tier voting system. Anonymous sources from within political circles reveal that a sweeping investigation might soon be on the horizon. The Department of Special Investigation (DSI) is preparing to scrutinise potential instances of election rigging. This follow-up investigation will likely focus on allegations of bloc-voting and money-laundering schemes that may have played significant roles in swaying election outcomes. The DSI, operating under the Justice Ministry led by Thavi Sodsong, who is seen as an ally of de facto Pheu Thai leader Thaksin Shinawatra, appears poised to launch a formal inquiry. Prominent in this scandal is the former assistant police chief Khamrop Panyakaew, who previously lodged a complaint with the Election Commission. Despite his allegations being dismissed for a purported lack of evidence, Khamrop's complaints have brought renewed scrutiny and pressure for transparent investigations into the senatorial elections. Senate Speaker Mongkol Surasajja, whose position within the upper house represents a broad cross-section of the 200 senators, stands at the heart of this unfolding crisis. A considerable portion of these senators are believed to be covert loyalists of Bhumjaithai Party leader Newin Chidchob. This political affiliation has become evident through the consistent alignment of the senate's voting behaviour with the MPs from Bhumjaithai, the second-largest partner in the ruling coalition. While the specifics of any potential wrongdoing remain under wraps, the investigation is expected to delve into numerous facets of the electoral process. This includes analysing voting patterns and financial transactions among those implicated in the scandal. The gravity of the situation reflects growing concerns over the effectiveness and fairness of Thailand's political system, potentially impacting future legislation and governance. As the DSI proceeds with its investigation, the Thai public watches with anticipation for revelations that could reshape the nation's political narrative. The outcome of this high-stakes inquiry will likely test the resilience of Thailand’s democratic institutions and the public’s trust in its elected representatives, reported Thai Newsroom. -- 2025-02-18

Thailand Unveils Salt Tax Plans to Curb Sodium Consumption File photo In a bid to tackle high sodium consumption and its associated health risks, Thailand's Excise Department is crafting a roadmap to introduce a salt tax, starting with snack foods. File photo In a bid to tackle high sodium consumption and its associated health risks, Thailand's Excise Department is crafting a roadmap to introduce a salt tax, starting with snack foods. This initiative mirrors previous steps taken with the sugar tax, aiming to improve public health through economic incentives. Kulaya Tantitemit, head of the Excise Department, shared that the discussions are ongoing with industry stakeholders. The aim is to gather input from the private sector as part of a collaborative effort to understand the potential impacts and refine the proposed tax structure. Significantly, this salt tax would be enforced initially on snack foods, which often lack nutritional value and contribute heavily to sodium intake. Acknowledging the challenge such a tax poses to businesses, the department plans to offer a transition period, mirroring the gradual implementation observed with the sugar tax launched in 2017. The sugar tax implementation, which increased over three phases, allowed businesses time to adapt to the increasing tax rates. Under the proposed tax, products would be taxed based on their sodium content, thereby encouraging manufacturers to reduce salt levels. Initially, the focus will be on snacks, leaving items like seasonings and instant noodles outside of this preliminary tax wave. Moreover, the department's tax restructuring plan also sees an environmental angle with changes proposed for battery taxes. Primary, single-use batteries would face higher taxes than secondary, rechargeable ones, encouraging more sustainable practices. Lighter and more efficient batteries will attract a lower tax rate, further promoting environmentally friendly options. The discussions align with broader government policies aimed at boosting tourism and increasing excise tax collection through other avenues, like the potential easing of alcohol sale restrictions. Such regulatory changes are intended to ramp up consumption, subsequently increasing government revenue through excise duties. For the fiscal year 2025, the Excise Department has set an ambitious revenue collection target of 609 billion Thai Baht. It’s a challenging goal, but the department and its director-general, Ms. Kulaya, are determined to meet it through strategic tax restructuring and broader regulatory policies. This tax initiative represents a broader commitment from the Thai government to enhance public health while stimulating economic gains through nuanced fiscal reforms, illustrating a progressive step towards sustainable development. These developments are crucial in the context of a global push towards healthier lifestyles and environmental sustainability, positioning Thailand among forward-thinking nations making strides in public health and economic reform, reported Bangkok Post. -- 2025-02-18

Picture courtesy: The Phuket News In a shocking incident last Saturday, a Myanmar national has been apprehended in Phuket for the attempted rape of a 57-year-old woman. The attack, which took place in the Wichit area, was thwarted by the timely arrival of the victim's son. The distressing events unfolded around 1pm on 15 February when the victim, known as Kai, was attacked in her home. The perpetrator, identified as Soe Aung, allegedly forced his way in, restrained her, and began undressing her. According to the police, Soe Aung, a migrant worker in the area, had been drinking near the victim's home before spotting the opportunity to assault. Seizing the moment, he intruded into Kai's house and carried out the attack. Fortunately, Kai’s son, Phonlawat, had sensed that something was amiss. His instinct led him to rush back home, where he encountered the suspect exiting hurriedly, shirtless and breathless. This unusual scene immediately raised his alarm. Initially too shaken to speak, Kai later mustered the strength to report the incident to Wichit Police Station at 8.43pm. Following the report, she was taken to Vachira Phuket Hospital. Medical professionals there confirmed injuries aligning with those of an attempted assault. Reacting to the gravity of the situation, Wichit Police Chief Police Colonel Chatree Chueakaew launched a swift investigation. A pursuit team under Pol. Lt. Col. Atthawat Suwannarat and Pol. Lt. Col. Anurak Klangnarong was promptly dispatched to locate Soe Aung. The suspect was quickly apprehended and underwent a urine test, which revealed drug use. During interrogation, he confessed to the attempted assault, attributing his actions to intoxication at the time of the crime, as reported by The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Phuket's Plan for Water Taxis: A New Way to Beat Traffic Picture courtesy: The Nation Phuket is charting a new course to address its infamous traffic jams by embracing a water transport system. Picture courtesy: The Nation Phuket is charting a new course to address its infamous traffic jams by embracing a water transport system. This innovative initiative seeks to alleviate road congestion on the bustling island, aiming to offer a more seamless and scenic travel alternative. On February 17, key figures gathered at the Phuket Provincial Hall's Smart Operations Center to discuss this ambitious plan, especially the proposed 'Boat Taxi' service. The meeting, spearheaded by Doctor Somkid Chokhong, an advisor to the Governor of Phuket, sought to forge a path towards integrating maritime transport into the island’s transportation strategy. Participants examined the current infrastructure challenges, chiefly the ongoing road construction and its impact on traffic. The Phuket Marine Office is at the forefront, exploring how waterways can serve as a practical substitute for land travel. A notable proposal included establishing new mooring buoy locations across Phuket. Suggested sites encompassed areas from Sirinat National Park through to Karon, highlighting potential hotspots for water taxi services. These locations could revolutionize daily commutes and offer tourists a unique way to experience the island. Efforts also focused on navigating the regulatory terrain needed to implement such an innovative system—a task requiring input from multiple stakeholders to ensure all legal requirements are met. This plan aligns with a directive issued by the Prime Minister and a Cabinet resolution from January 13, prioritizing water transport as a booster for Phuket’s economy and tourism, as highlighted by Phuket News. The water taxi initiative not only aims to ease traffic but presents an eco-friendly alternative that supports Phuket’s sustainable growth and economic development. In tandem with the water transport plan, another significant proposal on the horizon is the introduction of a monorail system. Governor Sophon Suwannarat recently suggested this as a strategic response to the island’s increasing traffic difficulties. The monorail would complement efforts to improve Phuket's infrastructure, offering residents and visitors an elevated travel experience free of road congestion. These dual transport innovations reflect Phuket’s commitment to modern solutions addressing the twin challenges of urban expansion and environmental sustainability. As plans progress, the initiative could turn the tide for traffic management on the island, making commuting a more pleasant and efficient experience for all, reported The Thaiger. -- 2025-02-18

Picture courtesy Pattaya Mail A tumultuous scene unfolded in Pattaya, as a 27-year-old Thai woman found herself at the center of a public altercation. She was violently attacked after accusing her Indian boyfriend of infidelity, turning a bustling nightspot into a battleground. The drama erupted at the end of Soi Diamond, just off Pattaya Second Road, in the thriving nightlife area. The victim, known as Ms. Parichat, had been in a relationship with the man for seven months. On this particular night, he was supposedly enjoying himself at a renowned nightclub on Walking Street. Trusting his words, she attended the venue with a friend, only to stumble upon a scene she hadn’t anticipated. Upon arrival, Parichat discovered her boyfriend in the company of a group of women. Tensions quickly flared as she confronted the group, leading to a clash with one woman who insisted the boyfriend was equally hers. Security personnel intervened, diffusing the situation momentarily by escorting the parties outside. However, the issue was far from resolved. As Parichat and her friend made their way back, they were ambushed. A group composed of four Thai women and one foreign woman attacked her. In an alarming display of violence, one woman in black unabashedly continued the assault, kicking and beating Parichat in full view of foreign tourists. Shockingly, many onlookers merely recorded the incident, while those who attempted to help were told to back off by the aggressors. A determined passerby, undaunted by the verbal assaults from the attackers, eventually assisted Parichat in reaching the Pattaya City Police Station to report the crime. The Indian boyfriend and the attacking group lingered at the scene, engaged in an ongoing dispute, but vanished before police could take them into custody. Police are now fully engaged in the investigation, reviewing CCTV footage to identify and apprehend those involved. The incident underscores the challenges local law enforcement faces in maintaining order amidst the vibrant, and occasionally volatile, nightlife that draws visitors from around the world. Authorities have urged anyone with further information or eyewitness accounts to step forward, as efforts continue to bring the perpetrators to justice and support the victim in the aftermath of this distressing event, reported Pattaya Mail. -- 2025-02-18

Picture courtesy: Khaosod A German chemical engineer in Krabi has sparked alarm after his experimental cannabis concoction led to unmanageable hallucinations, prompting his Thai wife to call the police for help. On 17th February, police and a local rescue team were dispatched to a disturbance in Krabi's Sai Thai area. They found 37-year-old German national, Mr Claus (not his real name), in a heightened state outside his home, with his 33-year-old Thai wife anxiously waiting for assistance. Mr Claus emerged disoriented, shouting about his wealth, and initially resisted interventions. Police prepared to manage the situation carefully to prevent any harm to his wife, fearing escalation. Eventually, Mr Claus agreed to seek medical treatment after initial negotiations. His wife revealed that her husband, a chemical engineer, had been experimenting with Dimethyltryptamine (DMT), a potent hallucinogen. When combined with cannabis, it induced severe delusions, including visions of Buddha and paranoia. His wife's intervention was necessary as his behaviour had become unpredictable after using the mixture less than 10 times over two weeks. His creations, involving sensitive ingredients, mirrored synthetic drugs and prompted erratic, unrecognisable behaviour, reported Khaosod. -- 2025-02-18

South Pattaya Enforces Strict Parking Rules as Clampdown Begins Picture courtesy: Pattaya Mail Amid escalating concerns over traffic congestion in South Pattaya, authorities are taking decisive action, implementing strict regulations to address the ongoing chaos. Full story: https://aseannow.com/topic/1352099-south-pattaya-enforces-strict-parking-rules-as-clampdown-begins/ -
Picture courtesy: Pattaya Mail Amid escalating concerns over traffic congestion in South Pattaya, authorities are taking decisive action, implementing strict regulations to address the ongoing chaos. Tourists visiting the bustling seaside city have unintentionally found themselves at the centre of this clampdown, with many left puzzled by the local parking system. Officials have recently intensified their focus on enforcing alternate-day parking rules, an initiative designed to ease the heavy traffic burden. The enforcement includes a meticulous system where vehicles must adhere to odd and even day parking designations, depending on the calendar date. Non-compliance not only disrupts traffic flow but also attracts fines and penalties. This regulation is crucial to managing the city's limited parking infrastructure, especially in areas heavily trafficked by visitors. To tackle the problem of illegal parking, traffic officers are actively monitoring the streets, employing methods such as clamping unauthorised vehicles. Motorists caught on the wrong side of these regulations face fines that can mount to substantial amounts, often averaging around 2,000 Thai Baht (approximately £45). This penalty serves as a deterrent, reminding all drivers of the importance of abiding by local laws. The push towards stringent enforcement aims to instil long-term behavioural changes among drivers. It’s part of a broader government strategy to transform Pattaya into a more organised and tourist-friendly destination. By reducing congestion, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists alike can enjoy a safer and more pleasant urban environment. Local businesses have occasionally expressed mixed feelings about the vigorous enforcement, worried it might deter tourists unfamiliar with the intricacies of the local parking codes. However, community leaders emphasise that these measures are essential for the benefit of all, ensuring both safety and accessibility. Tourists and locals alike are encouraged to acquaint themselves with the rules before venturing into the city by car. Authorities have also made efforts to distribute leaflets, ensuring the information on parking regulations is readily accessible. Additionally, signage in multiple languages has been erected, aiming to bridge the communication gap and guide visitors proficiently. Ultimately, adhering to these regulations not only avoids hefty fines but also contributes to the city’s collective goal of cultivating a more navigable and enjoyable experience for everyone. As Pattaya continues to welcome tourists from around the world, the hope is that these measures will foster a more harmonious relationship between visitors and the vibrant cityscape, reported Pattaya Mail. -- 2025-02-18
