Pheu Thai and Bhumjaithai Convene for Meeting of Core Party Members
Bhumjaithai Might Take Turn To Form Majority Govt: Chonlanan Pheu Thai leader Chonlanan Srikaew. Credit: Matichon A DESPERATE PHEU THAI LEADER Chonlanan Srikaew said today (July 24) the Bhumjaithai could possibly be given a pivotal role of setting up a majority government now that the Pheu Thai may have failed to find enough support for a partisan candidate for prime minister. Given the task of mustering endorsement from parties and senators for the planned naming of Pheu Thai contestant Srettha Thavisin for prime minister, the second largest elected party might probably come to the conclusion that it has already failed to make it, thus prompting the possibility of leaving the business of forming a majority government to the Bhumjaithai as the third largest one under de facto party boss Newin Chidchob, according to the Pheu Thai leader. The Move Forward, the No.1 largest elected party, has earlier failed to have Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat voted for prime minister in recent joint House/Senate meetings and then passed on the roles of the core of eight coalition partners to the Pheu Thai under de facto party boss/deposed prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra. PM selection sitting this Thursday now in limbo
Ombudsman’s Office To Ask Court To Postpone Next Meeting On Voting For PM by TNR Staff Secretary-General of the Office of the Ombudsman Pol. Col. Keirov Kritteeranon. Photo: Thai Rath THE Ombudsman’s Office has decided to ask the Constitutional Court to postpone the next House/senate meeting scheduled for Thursday (July 27) until it rules on constitutionality of the last meeting’s vote to deny Move Forward leader Pita Limjaroenrat a second chance to be named and voted prime minister on grounds it violated Article 41 of the House regulations, TV Channel 7 said. This article of House regulations states that a motion dropped cannot be resubmitted in the same parliamentary session except for vote not having taken place but in Pita’s case there was voting at the first session on July 13. At 2.30 p.m. Pol. Col. Keirov Kritteeranon, secretary-general of the Office of the Ombudsman, said some lawmakers and the general public had petitioned the agency to forward a case to the Constitutional Court to rule whether the vote in favour of applying this regulation by 395 MPs and senators on July 19 is contrary or inconsistent with Section 213 of the Constitution. Rejection of Pita’s renomination as PM ‘unconstitutional’ : Ombudsman
Ombudsman Seeks Thai Charter Court’s Ruling on Parliament’s Decision to Block Pita’s PM Renomination By Goongnang Suksawat National — The Office of the Ombudsman on Monday, July 24th, decided to ask the Constitutional Court whether Parliament’s decision to block Pita Limjaroenrat, leader and PM candidate for the Move Forward Party, from being re-nominated for the PM role is constitutional or not. At a press conference today, the Ombudsman revealed to the press that it will submit a request to the charter court to determine the constitutionality of the Parliament’s decision on July 19th that barred Pita from being re-nominated for the leadership position. Those who voted to block Pita cited that his renomination violated the parliamentary regulations which stipulate that once a proposal is rejected by the Parliament, it cannot be re-proposed. Mint-chocolate drinks banned in some cafés over Pheu Thai’s political move
Several cafés in Thailand have stopped selling mint-chocolate drinks, after the Pheu Thai party met with Bhumjaithai, the United Thai Nation, Chart Pattana Kla and Chartthaipattana parties over the past weekend, to woo them into supporting its prime ministerial candidate and forming a government. Mint-chocolate drinks became widely popular after one of Pheu Thai’s prime ministerial candidates, Paetongtarn Shinawatra, stated that it is her favourite drink. Since then, the drink became symbolic of the party and is often served to welcome members of other political parties whenever they visit its headquarters. One of the cafes which stopped selling the drink called it a “betray-your-friend-menu”. Some of them also announced that customers’ orders for the drink will be automatically cancelled on delivery apps, while some cafes went as far as announcing that they will only sell iced Americano and orange juice, a drink symbolic of the Move Forward party and Pita Limjaroenrat’s favourite drink. A Thai doctor is urging her fellow citizens to get out in the sun, saying blood tests show most are deficient in Vitamin D. In a report by Nation Thailand, Dr Rojanaree Thitisuwan from Vejthani Hospital says 99% of people who had their vitamin levels tested were found to be lacking in Vitamin D. The doctor says most of them are people working indoors or people who choose to stay out of the sun because they don’t want their skin getting darker (a common cultural preference in parts of Asia). The latest findings back up a recent article from the Faculty of Medicine at Mahidol University. The article states that Vitamin D levels in city residents in Thailand have been found to be much lower than farmers in the northeast of the country. Flour protest: Activist group targets Palang Pracharath members at Pheu Thai office
Political chaos erupted outside the Pheu Thai Party head office in Bangkok yesterday, as the Thalu Wang activist group staged a disruptive protest, demanding the party cease negotiations with Thailand’s military-backed factions. The protest, which saw flour being poured on Palang Pracharath Party (PPP) members, resulted in the cancellation of a press conference. The roots of this turmoil can be traced back to the General Election, where the Move Forward Party (MFP) emerged victorious. However, unable to secure enough votes to form a government, MFP leader Pita Limjaroenrat decided to step aside, allowing the Pheu Thai Party to take centre stage. Subsequently, the Pheu Thai Party engaged in talks with various parties from the previous government, aiming to gain more support and form a Parliamentary majority. The meeting, scheduled for July 27, sparked suspicions that they were attempting to forge a government without MFP. On July 22, representatives from the Bhumjaithai Party visited the Pheu Thai headquarters to explore potential solutions for effective governance. After the meeting, Bhumjaithai leader Anutin Charnvirakul expressed a willingness to work with Pheu Thai but not with MFP, citing differences in ideologies and approaches. Anutin said… “If we are to be involved, we will be unable to work with the Pheu Thai Party if the MFP remains part of the coalition government. It is not about the conflict, but rather the differences in our thoughts and working processes.” by Petch Petpailin Photo by Thanit Sudto (ฐานิส สุดโต) via The Standard Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/flour-protest-activist-group-targets-palang-pracharath-members-at-pheu-thai-office -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Ford Thailand showcases Ranger Raptor’s potential in thrilling off-road media event
In a recent initiative called the Ford Ranger Raptor Unbeatable Experience, Ford Thailand championed the capabilities of its leading 1-tonne pickup truck, the Ford Ranger Raptor. The experiential event allowed the Thai media to get a first-hand taste of the vehicle’s off-road and cross-country prowess. An impressive fleet composed of the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel and 3.0-litre V6 twin-turbo petrol models were commandeered through a series of off-road and cross-country stations. These were set up at the Ford Ranger Off-Road Track in Phanat Nikhom district in the eastern Chon Buri province. Earlier in the year, a review of the Raptor V6 left no doubts about its performance calibre, though the substantial price tag was also evident. In contrast, the Raptor 2.0-litre, a more economically and environmentally friendly variant, was driven for the first time, albeit briefly, preventing a comprehensive review. Both Ranger Raptor variants come well-equipped, with numerous advanced digital drive systems that enhance the off-road driving experience. The 2.0-litre engine boasts a powerful 210 horsepower and a remarkable 500 nanometres of torque, while the 3.0-litre V6 engine stacks up 397 horsepower and 583 nanometres of torque. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/ford-thailand-showcases-ranger-raptors-potential-in-thrilling-off-road-media-trial -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-24 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Unyielding monsoon rains trigger flood and landslide alerts in 44 Thailand provinces
According to the Thai Meteorological Department (TMD), an unbroken spread of rainfall is affecting 44 provinces across Thailand, with a heavy downfall of 80% covering areas including Bangkok. The relentless rain is forecasted to continue into the next 24 hours. The TMD warns of potential dangers with flash floods and landslides being a significant concern, particularly in low-lying areas, and nearby hillside areas. While the continued rainfall remains concentrated in the regions of lower northern, northeastern, central, and western provinces, including Bangkok, several areas of the east and southern regions are also being impacted. Heavy rains are predicted to fall mainly over the east, prompting locals to prepare for the rising dangers of heavy to intense rain, and accumulating downpours which could lead to sudden flash floods and landslides. This rainfall is a result of a moderate monsoon trough passing through the lower north-central, east, and lower northeastern regions to the low-pressure area along the coast of southern Vietnam. Coupled with the fairly active southwest monsoon, it tends to cover the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand. The waves are expected to churn at 2 to 3 metres high in the upper areas of the Andaman Sea and the upper Gulf of Thailand, places where thunderstorms blow, resulting in waves rising above three metres. In the lower portions of the Andaman Sea and the Gulf of Thailand, the sea is expected to have waves of 1 to 2 metres, while farther from the shore, waves will rise above 2 metres. Upon this observation, boat operators are warned to navigate with caution and avoid the areas where thunderstorms occur. Small boats are recommended to remain ashore during this period, reported KhaoSod. This weather forecast for Thailand was predicted for 6am today to 6am tomorrow. Regions including northern, northeastern, central, eastern and western provinces are forecasted to experience thunderstorms, with certain provinces likely to experience heavy rainfall. Seafarers in these areas are urged to proceed with caution and abstain from setting sail during thunderstorms. by Nattapong Westwood Picture courtesy of vecstock, Freepik.
