Today, "Tiao Hui Huat", a Malaysian billionaire and owner of the MBI Group empire, was extradited to China to face money laundering charges. Tiao’s arrest follows an Interpol red notice and marks a significant development in a long-standing legal dispute. In July 2022, Tiao was apprehended at the Thai-Malaysian border by authorities acting on an Interpol red notice. He was wanted in both Malaysia and China for allegedly orchestrating a Ponzi scheme that duped investors out of substantial funds. To escape prosecution, Tiao had relocated to Thailand, where he operated for nearly a decade, contributing significantly to local tourism and public projects, especially around the Thai-Malaysian border. On 20th August, the Foreign Affairs Division accepted the request from Chinese authorities to extradite Tiao. He is accused of running a pyramid scheme in China that involved recruiting participants to invest in direct sales products falsely pitched as legitimate business services. The recruitment process required new members to pay for services or products to gain membership, creating a complex web of deceptive financial transactions. Tiao’s extradition was initially scheduled within 90 days from the court’s final judgment on 21st May. The Chinese Embassy in Thailand coordinated closely with local authorities to ensure his smooth transfer. On the day of the extradition, Tiao was moved from Bangkok Special Prison to Suvarnabhumi Airport, where he boarded a Shanghai Airlines Flight FM 834 to Shanghai under heavy security, reported Thai Rath. Interpol's involvement dates back to November 2020 when Chinese authorities identified Tiao’s involvement in running a fundraising network disguised under the façade of multi-level marketing. The scheme prompted numerous Chinese citizens to invest under false pretenses. Similarly, Malaysia had issued an arrest warrant for Tiao over related charges of running fraudulent investment schemes. Throughout his time in Thailand, Tiao became a well-known figure, investing in various sectors including hospitality, real estate, and tourism. His contributions to the local economy included constructing luxury hotels, entertainment venues, and notable landmarks such as Thailand's tallest Ganesha statue, valued at 50 million baht. Despite claims of earlier involvement in a drug trafficking ring—later proven unsubstantiated—Tiao has now been returned to China, where he faces prosecution for his financial crimes. Phongsayam Mee-khanthong and others, leading to a breakthrough in a major scam involving fake bookings for Sala Khaoyai, a popular tourist destination. On September 10, 2023, a victim booked two pool villas via a fake Sala Khaoyai Facebook page, transferring a total of 8,200 baht as accommodation fees and an additional 3,000 baht for a room deposit to account number 70-1360837-1 at CIMB Bank, under the name Ms. Mew. However, when the victim attempted to postpone the booking, she discovered that no reservation was made in her name and realised she had been duped. She promptly filed a complaint, reported Daily News. Investigations conducted by the Tourist Police's Investigation Division 1 led to the issuance of an arrest warrant by the Nakhon Ratchasima Provincial Court on April 26, 2024, against Ms. Mew. She was charged with "jointly defrauding the public and opening an account for crime-related purposes." On August 19, 2024, police officers traced Ms. Mew to Bang Rakam, Phitsanulok Province. She was promptly arrested and taken to Mueang Nakhon Ratchasima Police Station for further questioning. Ms. Mew confessed to being hired for 500 baht per bank account by an employer she was introduced to via Facebook. She had opened the fraudulent account online approximately 10 months prior. The Tourist Police's swift and effective action highlights their commitment to protecting tourists and maintaining the integrity of the country's tourism industry. An Indian man, Mr. Tarun Jain, 39, was found dead at a shop in Pathum Thani, Thailand, after disappearing following an argument with his Thai partner. Tarun Jain, an electrical wiring business owner from India, had been renting a flat in Pathum Thani for over a year, and he frequently stayed there during his visits to Thailand. He arrived in Thailand on August 12th, and two days later, he phoned his wife to inform her of a heated dispute with his business partner. After that, he vanished, and his wife lost contact with him. His distressed wife flew to Thailand and, unable to locate her husband, reported his disappearance to the local police. The mystery deepened when the apartment building manager discovered Jain's body on August 20th. He had fallen through the roof of the shop in front of the apartment building. Pol. Lt. Gen. Anusorn Wiangsima, deputy inspector at Khlong Luang police station, promptly arrived at the scene with crime scene officers, a doctor from Thammasat University Hospital, and Ruam Katanyu Foundation rescuers. They discovered no sign of struggle in Jain's third-floor flat but did find disturbing evidence on the building's rooftop, which the police collected, reported Thai Newsroom. Adding to the mystery is the fact that approximately 300,000 baht, in both US dollars and Thai currency, is missing. Jain's mobile phone was found on him, and police are now scrutinising surveillance camera footage from his apartment to identify anyone who may have entered his flat from the day of his arrival until his death. The incident involved an intoxicated foreigner who allegedly assaulted a German man, Mr. Ral Peter Mallon, 60, and his Thai wife, Ms. Pornwin Ramakul, 27. Authorities rushed to the scene after receiving reports of the disturbance at approximately 12:10 AM. Upon arrival, they discovered Mr. Mallon suffering from a significant head injury and Ms. Ramakul with a loose tooth. Both individuals received first aid before being transported to Bangkok Pattaya Hospital for further treatment, reported The Pattaya News. Eyewitness Ms. Kanyarat Wansena, 28, recounted that the foreigner began harassing her and her friends while they were at the bar. The assailant accused them of causing distress to one of his friends, but Ms. Kanyarat denied the accusation and attempted to de-escalate the situation. Despite their efforts, the foreigner became increasingly aggressive. Mr. Mallon intervened in an effort to protect his wife and friends but was allegedly punched by the drunken man, causing him to fall and hit his head on the floor. The fall resulted in a serious head injury that required over nine stitches. Doctors have advised that he remain under observation due to potential brain trauma. The suspect also struck Ms. Ramakul, leading to her dental injury. The suspect, who gave his name as “Michael,” 44, refused to provide further identification details to the authorities. He made offensive gestures at the media and police, raising his middle finger while being photographed. Later, it was revealed that he attempted to settle the matter personally by offering compensation to the victims. However, the police have stated that further legal actions will be considered once the victims have recovered sufficiently.
