Heavy rain, floods, and landslide dangers as monsoon air currents persist in Thailand
Thailand continues to experience heavy rainfall in various regions due to eastward-moving monsoon air currents and southwestern monsoon winds that still cover the Andaman Sea, Thailand, and the Gulf of Thailand. The adverse weather conditions have resulted in the need for vigilance against potential danger from intense and accumulated rainfall, which might lead to sudden floods and landslides, particularly in steep terrain near watercourses and low-lying areas. The passing waves from the eastern monsoon previously blanketed Thailand before heading towards the Andaman Sea. This pattern, coupled with a southwestern monsoon, causes isolated heavy rainfall in various regions, including the northern region, the central region, and the western side of the southern region. Inhabitants of these areas are therefore advised to stay alert for potential hazards caused by heavy rainfall and accumulated downpours, which may result in flash floods and wild water flow, especially in hillside areas near waterways and lowlands. Seafarers from the Andaman Sea and Gulf of Thailand are cautioned about calibrating their seafaring activities. The sea conditions are projected to present wave heights of about 1 metre. In areas subject to thunderstorms, the wave heights may peak at over 2 metres. Seafaring folks, particularly in the fluctuating monsoon regions, are advised to navigate their vessels with caution and avoid areas prone to thunderstorms, reported Sanook. As for weather forecasts for today and the next day, they break down as follows: The northern region has a 60% chance of thunderstorms, with certain areas experiencing heavy rainfall in provinces like Lampoon, Lampang, Chiang Rai, Takk, Sukhothai, and Kampangpetch. The lowest temperature is expected to hover between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius, while the highest temperature is forecasted between 34 and 38 degrees Celsius. A southwesterly wind speed 10 to 20 kilometres per hour is also expected. by Samantha Rose Picture courtesy of Christian Lue, Unsplash #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/hot-news/weather/heavy-rainfall-sweeps-thailand-flood-and-landslide-dangers-as-monsoon-air-currents-persist -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Though Thailand has made a lot of progress in the past ten years, especially in terms of policies, there is still room for improvement in accelerating the process and reaching the goal of zero stateless children in the near future. The Director of the Legal Status Network Foundation, Santiphong Moonfong, has been working with children for almost 30 years. He has seen the problems and challenges of stateless children firsthand and told Thai PBS World that Thailand has been trying to deal with the issue structurally, with laws and policies in place. The problem now is the practicality of the process. Simplification and flexibility “Stateless children are everywhere, in every registration office district, all over the country. The density, however, might vary. As of now, these children are standing on Thai soil. The challenge is how to provide these children with legal status,” said Santiphong. #news Full story: https://www.thaipbsworld.com/thailand-must-simplify-processes-to-solve-statelessness/ -- © Copyright Thai PBS 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Japanese tourism numbers in Thailand threatened by weak yen and slow Japan flight reintroduction
In light of Japan’s hesitant return to tourism and a faltering yen, Thailand’s Tourism Authority (TAT) has admitted there may be difficulty in meeting the year’s target of 850,000 Japanese arrivals. The figure reflects 50% of the Japanese tourism figures reported in 2019, considered an optimistic scenario by the Tokyo office director of TAT, Kajorndet Apichartrakul. As enclosed by Kajorndet, the sluggish revival of Japan’s outbound tourism industry has been attributed to their currency’s weakened position against the baht, currently averaging at 100 yen per 24 baht, a significant drop from a prior rate of 30 baht. The consequent financial strain on potential travellers is further exacerbated by Japan’s national encouragement for domestic travel as a more cost-effective means, impacting Japanese tourism in Thailand. Another key factor slowing down the recovery of Japan’s tourism rates is the lagging reintroduction of flights between Thailand and Japan, which is at present only 30 to 40% of the volume recorded in 2019. The director highlights that elevated flight costs remain an obstacle, yet expresses cautious optimism for improvement within the year as flight schedules are adjusted. by Alex Morgan Photo courtesy of Bangkok Post #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/business/thai-tourism-numbers-threatened-by-weak-yen-and-slow-japan-flight-reintroduction -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Thai submarine to be powered by Chinese engine following German withdrawal
In a recent development, an American naval source revealed that a panel is expected to recommend a Chinese-designed engine for the Thai submarine as a replacement for the original German one intended for the under-construction S26T Yuan-class submarine in China. This comes on the heels of a committee chaired by the navy’s chief-of-staff, Adm Chonlathis Navanugraha, unofficially proposing the use of the Chinese CHD620 engine as a possible stand-in for the German MTU 396 diesel engine. The panel believes the procurement of the Thai submarine aligns with the navy’s mission to fortify the country’s maritime interests. However, it’s worth noting that the panel’s anticipation of the Chinese-made engine is pending its certification by the Chinese Defence Ministry. Recently, said committee oversaw the testing of the Chinese-made power unit, clarifying that it wouldn’t be for the propulsion system of the Thai submarine. Instead, it’s meant for energy generation to recharge the batteries operating the submarine. The Thai submarine procurement project has encountered some setbacks due to the Covid-19 pandemic, which has resulted in construction hold and engine issues. As a result, the submarine’s delivery to Thailand has been pushed back. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Dorian Archus, Naval Post #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/chinese-engine-expected-to-power-thai-submarine-following-german-withdrawal-2 -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Dengue outbreak: Triple surge in cases challenge Thai healthcare system in first half year
A shocking surge in dengue patients has been recorded in the first half of this year, with numbers almost triple that of the same period last year, according to the Department of Disease Control (DDC). The dengue outbreak continues to challenge the healthcare system, as the number of infected individuals soars. From January 1 to June 28, 27,377 dengue cases were identified, marking a near tripling of the numbers from the corresponding period the previous year. Furthermore, the DDC reported that 33 patients have tragically lost their lives in these cases due to the severe dengue outbreak. Dengue fever spread through the bites of infected Aedes-species mosquitoes, continues to pose a significant public health issue. The DDC reported a notably steep rise in cases last month, with between 1,500 and 2,400 new patients diagnosed with dengue weekly. Shockingly, one to three deaths were reported weekly due to the viral infection. by Mitch Connor Photo courtesy of Freepik #news Full story: https://thethaiger.com/news/national/triple-surge-of-dengue-cases-challenge-thai-healthcare-system-in-first-half-year -- © Copyright Thaiger 2023-07-10 - Cigna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m.
