I first visited Phuket 48 years ago, needless to say it was very undeveloped and quite idealic. I came back about 15 years later and it was starting to get developed but still very nice. As recently as 2010 it was far more developed but at least it had good night life. Now? Overcrowded, overpriced, chock full of obnoxious Russians and low end tourists, and some of the worst nightlife I've seen anywhere. Yikes. I never need to return.
Young lads seem to like it. Maybe night didn't get worse but someone just got old and has different views.

Thais being Thais. They don't care. We can't change it. Accept or move out.

When asking for directions
Don't ask in Thai unless you can understand the response
Ask precisely where something is or how to get there. Do not point or offer anything like is it this way or that way left or right. This is indeed because if the person doesn't know they will just agree with you. This is the Asian way and not necessarily particular to Thailand
Yes, I just don't ask, easier than navigating all those assumptions.
Why would I ask in language I can't understand?

What I learned?
Yes can mean "I don't know". They never acknowledge if they don't know something so asking locals for directions is a waste of time.

I do it for fun. Love thinking, do it for a living and can't get enough

My middle class friend did it and she said it was 200k. She said it's major surgery so better to get the best quality.
I agree

For me it means only having a medical every two years, and as I am scared witless of needles, it is one less needle. 🙂
I never got any medical for my WP.
Obviously I dont file the paperwork but company does. They schedule appointment. I come, wait 5 mins, sign, take pic. Go home. Yes commuting is a waste of time but on the other hand company gives me a day off. So I guess it's a win.

I got 4 years. Previously 2. But why does it matter? It's valid as long as you work anyway.

in this thread you explain, why Thais don't lime geezer farangs.
Ignorant and angry

It's amazing that Booking can be so good while Agoda can be so bad. Booking gives you the total price when you search. Agoda doesn't include taxes and fees in their quoted price. Agoda is useless if you have a complaint. A couple of Indians in a call center who just parrot the company line. Booking isn't much better with the customer service but at least you know what you're paying.
You can change price setting to include tax on Agoda too. They target Asians and they fall for those tricks, fake discounts, popups, hidden taxes.
Even I went to buy mattress and asked lady how come there's 75% discount. Seller said it's for Thais, they like big discounts but it's not real. Original price is random.

I booked a hotel on Agoda that clearly stated that breakfast was included. When I got to the hotel, they told me no breakfast . I showed them the Agoda confirmation and they told me that they never use Agoda due to problems in the past and always use Booking.com. In fact, I had made the booking over Agoda but the hotel had received the booking from Booking.com. I told them it was basically the same company but they insisted that Agoda always makes mistakes.
As it turned out, the breakfast was terrible so I didn't really care but I still had to wonder who was at fault.
Hotel was lying.

My eldest daughter says their frozen Spaghetti Carbonara is better than every restaurant we go to (we eat out a lot).
I disagree with her btw.
What restaurant you go to? Carbonara shouldn't be sweet.
I recommend almond cheescake. It's superb compared to most 'home' bakes here at a fraction of the price.

That is untrue. The employer can cancel it.
When I left my last job we agreed a date for me to finish, then on that day they went to immigration to cancel my visa for me - I just gave them my passport and didn't have to go with them, I went and got it back once it was done. Easy.Oo, guy is asking if they can cancel without his consent. You asked for it and gave them passport. You can have anything done for you if you sign power of attorney..

Boi work permits can be canceled online with a single click in a second.
Visa is yours to cancel. They can't cancel it.

My company uses them.
I participate to enjoy 15% tax exemption but nothing more that that. They don't know how to invest money. They are actually loosing them for most of my coworkers.
I hope we will change company soon.

Your daughter will surely do better back home, but she's still pretty young so you have time. I'm going to bring my own daughter back to the states before she is 10, so she will fit in with the current curriculum in the school there. She's pretty good speaking English now, and I've been teaching her words, along with what she gets in school, which isn't much. For now, you can get a dependent visa, and stay until you can convince your wife to let your daughter go home with you. You are in the same kind of situation many here find themselves in. trusting you know your wife until things go wrong, and you feel stuck here. Once trust is lost, the relationship is gone, especially in a country where counseling isn't so prevalent, and women are less likely to go along with it to help the marriage. You're lucky you still have a house back home. I'll have to get a rent to own for a couple years, and then a mortgage again, all when I'm around 70. Not impossible by any means, but it will be a pain. Like you mentioned, her own family has told you how her parents were, and cheating is often learned at home, watching parents be disloyal. Kids know. You were never in any way responsible for any of her family debts, and can cut that off immediately. They will pressure you, and threaten, but since you're on the way out now, that doesn't matter anymore. If you divorce, you will get visitation, as fathers never get custody here unless it's given by the mom, or she's a drug dealer. They haven't a clue that dads are sometimes the better parent where a child is concerned. They see how most locals here are, and think foreigners are the same. This way, you can see your daughter (find a rental close by), see her every week (ask for more than they want to give, at least you can get weekends), and if your wife gets bored with raising your daughter, as happens quite a lot here, you can make a deal then.
Why have a kid whe you are so old? You probably won't be there for 18 birthday, this is genuine question l, I am curious what drives people like you

Maybe they've lived here long enough to know what goes on? Maybe they want better for their daughter than becoming a farmer's wife? Living here all their lives, knowing most jobs are dead end and won't give you a secure future. Of course some weirdos manipulate their daughters to go looking for a cash cow, who will let funds go downstream to them, or talk their daughters to sell the bodies for the same reason.
So they know she's not smart enough to make it on her own.

In general, Thai men's view of an 'attractive' woman is different to the typical Western males preference. So Thai men feel that we've gone for the women they rejected.
Often, when visiting a shopping mall, when I see a woman I perceive as beautiful - 9 times out of 10, their partner is Western.
We tend not to fancy the white-skinned, petite, curve-free, flat-cheekboned, Chinese-Thai girls that Thai men perceive as ideal wives - which is lucky, as they don't fancy us either.
I'm not referring exclusively to the dark skinned, long legged Isaan girls as meeting Western tastes .... as many girls from other regions have very attractive features to Western eyes. The classic Thai look of large, exotic eyes, high cheekbones, luscious lips, high forehead and long dark hair plus 'dusky maiden' skin tones, ticks all the boxes for us.
My wife is from Samut Prakarn, a Bangkok 'commuter belt', and her friends and family told her she should go to Bangkok to find a good falang husband, as she had the looks we like. To my eyes she's perfection .... slim and leggy but with curves where needed, cappuccino colored skin, large expressive eyes and a stunning smile. But to Thai men she's not wife material, as she's too sexy looking. To them she'd be an ideal 'Gik'.
Just look at the Lakorn TV serials, the white skinned Chinese-Thai wife being wronged by the overtly sexy Mia Noi.
If family encorouges a woman to go to the city look for a foreigner, there is something very wrong with them.

Thai are immature and dangerous. Many don't show any brain activity. I usually avoid. I honked once at a truck that tried to kill me with dangerous manouvrr and guy caught up to me at an intersection to fight, but he gave up after he saw I was white.

I dropped my passport to a local law firm 10 mins from my place on a day when I was travelling close to their office.
90 day report done and ready to be picked up the next day, I picked it up a few of days later.Didn't have to go near immigration. Nothing to pay. Couldn't have been easier.
I logged in to a website. Input dates and sent the form. Approved in 3 hours for free without going out.
Why not do it yourself?
