  2. Stylish rooftop bars are famous, must see attractions in Bangkok for good reason – they are awesome. Now, however, Hua Hin is muscling in on the action with their own state-of-the-art sky bar at the Holiday Inn resort.

Not only are the views breathtaking, especially at sunset, but the glass sky walk adds to the experience.

Mangroves are probably not the first thing you associate with Thailand, in fact, I am very sure if the question was asked on the old TV show ‘Family Fortunes’ that it would not even register a single vote for association!

However, I must admit I was very pleasantly surprised by the beauty of the mangroves in the Pranburi National Park just 20 minutes south of Hua Hin.

My vlog starts with an exploration of Pranburi National Park along the beachside and campsite, and only in the later stages do I then discover the small entrance to the mangrove area. I was truly amazed by the beauty.

  4. Coastal Thailand news for September 29th, 2020
    David Luekens

Welcome to another Island Wrap, your weekly window to coastal Thailand. This stacked edition covers an American expat who was arrested over a negative review on Ko Chang (Trat); an order to protect Thai marine environments; the first tourists to be allowed into Thailand since March — and a whole lot more.

Last week I published a post on Ko Kradat, a small island where dozens of deer are free to roam and munch on coconuts as they please. The Island Wrap will be my only post this week. Yup, still not finished with all of that freelance work.

Over on Couchfish, Stuart stayed on a virtual path through Cambodia with “a love letter to Phnom Penh” and a visit to a notorious prison where thousands died during the genocide committed by the Khmer Rouge in the 1970s and early ‘80s. He also penned a story on the value of street food tours that includes, among others, a quote by my partner Chin, owner of Chili Paste Tour in Bangkok.

  5. Ko Kradat: Where the deer roam free
    By David Luekens

I kept laughing out loud while rumbling down a dirt track on a motorbike that a farmer let me borrow for free. Deer pranced off into the brush. Sea eagles soared in search of fish offshore. Lizards scampered into holes. Apart from the animals and three coconut farmers, I did not spot another soul.

This was the scene when I visited Ko Kradat, which reminded me that Thai islands are far from predictable. If you like deer and empty beaches, this small island near Ko Mak in the Ko Chang archipelago is well worth a trip.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_e684061e-9c8d-4343-bfcb-d09ad2fac81c_6000x4000.jpeg

    Welcome to Deerland.

    Launching from Ko Mak

Having finished a day of accommodation research for the Travelfish guide to Ko Mak, I rode a scooter past thick rubber groves and a couple of villages before the concrete lane turned to sand in the island’s sparsely developed northeast. There stretches Hat Laem Son, an ocher-sand beach with a lone seafood eatery shaded by pine-like son trees. From the shore, Ko Kradat looked like a pancake afloat on the sea.

There is one thing living abroad in a country like Thailand but there is also another aspect of making sure you are getting the most from the experience.

As much as I possibly can I like to get away and do something different with my family, even if it is just booking a weekend away in a resort.

This time we checked in at the excellent Cea Villas in Hua Hin.

As I review some of the video footage I have accumulated over the last few years it acts as a reminder of just how beautiful Thailand can be.  There is just so much to discover and even now after over a decade of living here, I find new things each week for the first time.

Here is just a small montage of various locations I have been over the years.

I had to think a few times before settling on this vlog title as I didn’t want to be misleading in any way, but I don’t think this title does. Pattaya is a great place for a short break, no question about that. Pattaya is also no longer reserved for the single retirees, far from it in fact; so much so that some would argue it barely caters for them now.

Pattaya has rebranded and is family friendly and hugely popular with Chinese and Indian holidaymakers. As many of you know, I used to live in Pattaya for over a decade and still have fond memories but I could see the writing was on the wall for most businesses targeting Expats. Modern Pattaya is aligned to the holidaymaker and has something for everyone wanting to enjoy themselves.

At little over one hour drive from Hua Hin, I was amazed by the stunning nature on display that begun very early on in the drive towards the pa la-u waterfall.

Signs of wild life was evident from the signs saying ‘don’t feed the elephants’ and barriers in the the road slowing traffic at certain points.

Although a two tier National park pricing exists between foreign and Thais, I was not prepared to let this get in the way of my families enjoyment of this visit.  I am not supportive of two tier pricing it is wrong, but I am also not going to lose any sleep over it either.

I run out of words to describe my experience at the King Power Mahanakhon sky walk in Bangkok, and this stunning experience starts the moment you set foot in the lift – From the ground to 74th floor in 15 seconds!

To walk out on a glass sky walk 310 metres above ground is as terrifying as it is amazing.

  13. Coastal Thailand news for September 22nd, 2020

    By David Luekens

Greetings from coastal Thailand, where many communities are cleaning up after Tropical Storm Nuol blew through over the weekend. That story and others — including a destructive industrial project and the end of Thailand’s pandemic-related visa amnesty — are on the way in this edition of the Island Wrap.

Later this week I’ll take you on a trip to a small island in the Eastern Gulf with nothing but a coconut farm, a few beaches and a herd of deer.

Over on Couchfish, Stuart spent a day with the Mekong River dolphins and met a fortune teller in Cambodia. He also waxed about remote Kepa Island, home to one of his favorite places to stay in Indonesia.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984.s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_1bfb59f7-c0da-495e-92a8-6b9ae2a6812c_6000x4000.jpeg

The name Laem Tukkata is used for both the cape that forms the southwest corner of Ko Mak, and the laid-back beach pictured above.

    Pick of the week: BEACH

One of my favorite spots for down time in the Ko Chang archipelago is Hat Laem Tukkata, a compact beach hidden away in the southwest corner of Ko Mak. A wooded hill backs the pinkish sand and hosts a few “resorts” with bare-bones huts that fetch as little as 300 baht per night. Baan Ing Kao is the largest, but all three are made for backpackers and it’s easy to show up and look for the ideal bungalow in person. A bit of coral is worth a snorkel offshore, and even if you don’t stay here, do stop by and rent a kayak to check out the nearby twin islets of Ko Rayang.

  14. Screenshot_2020-09-25 Phuket to Koh Lanta Roadtrip including amazing hot springs and delightful Ferry crossing .png

My family and I flew into Phuket from Bangkok airport for a crazy low fare of 2,200 baht for all four of us, and decided to do a road trip South to Koh Lanta.

Phuket was, like every tourist destination at the moment, a ghost town and very sad to see. The only positive is purely selfish in that we got to enjoy paradise beaches to ourselves. I hope that the opportunity to explore Thailand with a lack of crowds is a one off moment and that International tourism finds a way to come back soon. Whilst I have this moment though, I want to make the most of it.

But what is clear in tourist centric destinations in Thailand is that every day the borders remain closed, another business will close for good.

The Royal Project in Hua Hin set up by the Late King Bhumibol. Many foreigners are unaware of this beautiful Hua Chan Project that is part of this larger Royal Project.

The Chang Hua Man Royal Project is in Phetchaburi, a short drive from the seaside resort of Cha-Am and encapsulates everything the Royal Projects are all about.

Initiated in 2009 on 250 rai (99 acres) of land, the Chang Hua Man Royal Project is an experimental farm where a range of experimental crops are being tested, not only to help the local people of the Phetchaburi area, but farmers around the nation.

Now I am either going to come across like an odd-ball or for a few of you I may just hit a chord, and i am going to make a huge assumption by suggesting the two camps can be split by virtue of your working status here in Thailand. In fact I reckon you can also split by family status too.

There may be some clever ones though that can relax irrespective of their life status

I am a working, family man expat in Thailand and in both my work and family time I never stop. Ever. Recently my wife and two kids flew to Russia for a holiday and left me home alone in Hua Hin, and in just a couple of days I made some startling learning’s. Well, they were certainly startling for me.

I never relax or have a time out. When I work I push it to the limit and as far as my ability will take me. If I am not working then more often or not I am thinking about work. How can I grow web traffic, lock in more subscribers, how do I best monetise all of my media and then there is the staffing side to ensure everyone is doing their bit. The list goes on. I am deeply competitive and know for my media to grow it needs momentum and it needs to continually evolve and be relevant. Any way park this, as this is not my motive for this blog. My motive was to share my recent experience in appreciating the value of relaxation. The word that works for me in parallel to relaxation is contentment – something I thought only existed by excelling in work and against other such aspirations one may have.

Is it possible to get the balance wrong?

I am so conditioned to working hard that perhaps I am forgetting what life is all about.

Man spends all his life climbing the ladder only to realise he has climbed the wrong ladder

    Buddhist Monk Quote

Now I don’t want to not achieve in work and against my ambition. I still think it provides stimulating goals that keep your zest for life. It is in many ways all just a big game, but I do think many of us can forget the basics and that is pure relaxation, free of any draining thoughts is a good thing. A very good thing in fact.

As I said earlier, my family are in Russia on vacation and that has given me time and space I have not had in a long time. I love my family, this is not in question, but what I forgot about was giving myself my own space. Over the last few days, I have found the peace and quiet quite enchanting. I could feel my body unwind and relax.

It is Sunday morning and I was in the gym at 7 am and then went to Coffee Club cafe at 9 am for breakfast. Somehow I managed to spend an hour and a half there just completely chilled out. I never do that, it is always in and out and on to my next job.

I had not been to Nong Nooch Gardens in Pattaya for many years but once I heard about the new Dinosaur attraction I just had to take my kids. Frank, my youngest, is an avid fan of dinosaurs and he was in for a treat.

If you have not visited the gardens before then it really needs to be ticked off your list as things to do when in Pattaya. It has become a monster tourist attraction and the entrance seems more like an airport than a tropical gardens nowadays, but look past this and once into the park you can lose yourself very quickly.

I never get bored of living in Thailand and my boat trip off the coast of Koh Chang further reinforced the fact that I am living the dream. Surrounded by such beautiful islands and a glorious climate make living in this country a pleasure.

In truth I don’t do enough boat excursions, and this such trip would have probably only been my fourth or fifth in over 15 years.

My trip was with the Paragon Properties team who are based in Pattaya and I must say they are a great team to spend time with. Wonderful day and another memory that I will long cherish.

Evasion Camp Special Discount for ThaiVisa & Expat Explore readers

    Copy-of-20200712_133105-scaled.jpg

Evasion Camp is brought to you by Odasie and Safarine Tours, two local travel agencies established in Thailand for 12 and 25 years respectively.

Odasie was founded by Nicolas and his wife in 2008.

With a unique travel experience in mind, Odasie is offering private and tailor-made trips around Thailand for all kinds of travelers, from couples to families.

Safarine Tours was founded in 1995 by David who felt in love with the Kingdom, especially Kanchanaburi province. As a specialist of Western Thailand, he has for more than 20 years put his expertise, knowledge and hospitality at the service of travelers.

Both agencies are actively engaged in responsible and respectful tourism, respect for human beings, ecosystems and biodiversity.

With the Covid19 this year and the closure of Thailand’s borders, Odasie and Safarine have teamed up and created Kids Evasion Camp, a new kind of kids camp with a travel agency vibe to it !

Unlike other camps, we do not spend the full time at one and unique location. We split the week between 2 atmospheres : 3 nights in a jungle environment (such as Kanchanaburi or Khao Yai) and 3 nights in a private beachfront environment (such as Hua Hin or Chonburi).

With activities specially designed for kids, private accommodation (twin rooms) and with a trained and professional team of instructors (at least 1 instructor for 2 kids) committed to the their well being, Kids Evasion Camp is the perfect place for your kids to have fun, make new friends and learn new things, in a safe and secure environment !

    Upcoming events:

2 sessions in Kanchanaburi and Hua Hin:
    11 to 17 October
