  1. Coastal Thailand news for August 18th, 2020
    David Luekens, Thai Island Times

Welcome to Thailand, where heavy rain is still wreaking havoc and potential island “travel bubbles” are making headlines again. Those and many other stories are coming your way in this week’s edition of the Island Wrap.

After thinking of heading South for weeks but not setting any plans in stone, we made a last-minute decision to drive up to Northeast Thailand instead. I’m writing this at the M Grand, a hotel near the Mekong River in far-flung Bueng Kan province. Here we’ve done some upcountry “whale watching” and stepped gingerly alongside a cliff at Wat Phu Tok. I highly recommend Bueng Kan for adventure travel.

People rightfully think of me as an “island guy,” but the truth is that I love all five of Thailand’s primary regions. Almost every trip I’ve taken over the last two years has been to the islands and coastal areas, and I was longing to see those green rice paddies that extend as far as the eye can see in the Northeast, also known as Isaan.

I also suppose that, deep down, I was longing to visit places that feel normal. We’ve found that in Isaan, which draws few foreign tourists and was not hit hard by Covid-19. In the towns and villages, it’s as if the pandemic never happened. Compare that to economically devastated islands and beach towns, and perhaps you can understand why we steered upcountry. I’ll hit the islands again soon enough.

A lumpy Ko Kradan on the horizon. Come back on Friday to hear more about it.

  2. Ko Mook: The island that turned me into an island lover

    David Luekens, Thai Island Times

Right around dusk, the longtail ferry shoved off as the azure blue and indigo of the sky reflected on the Andaman Sea’s teal surface. It was one of the most calming scenes I’d ever been a part of — and we hadn’t even reached the island yet. After ten minutes or so, the engine began to sputter. We drifted to a stall.

For an hour, we sat in the boat and watched the driver wrestle with the engine. It chugged and cranked, but would not start. So a second boat came to tow us all the way to Ko Mook (or Muk), the “Pearl Island” of Trang province.

Seated on one of the benches that rim the wooden boat’s interior, I conversed with a young English teacher on a short getaway from Bangkok, and an elderly solo traveler from Germany taking her fifth visit to the island. Locals chatted, their sacks of onions and toys and rice piled among a few backpacks and suitcases.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984_s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_d78992ff-54f2-46ca-96a9-0d82a31b143f_4928x3264.jpeg.e6ebfb81ea7a08be89691d76464d6591.jpeg

Loading up the local ferry to Ko Mook at Kuan Thung Khu, the pier on mainland Trang province where my Thai island journey began nearly nine years ago.

I felt sorry for the boat driver, but thankful to be there. This was exactly the sort of open-ended slow travel that I’d spent the last several years working two bartending jobs to reach. I sat there on the orange bench, and soaked it in.

It was late October 2011. If you had asked me two months earlier, I would not have known about Ko Mook. I’d enjoyed a few days on Ko Samui during a previous trip, but most of my travels in Thailand up to that point had taken me upcountry. I was now heading to Ko Mook as part of my first-ever assignment for Travelfish. The first of many, as it would turn out.

I have been in Thailand a long time and it is not often that I am blown away by something, but in the Mahanakorn Sky walk in Bangkok I was. Big time.

You just have to visit this attraction. The moment you shoot 71 floors up in 50 seconds on the fastest lift in Thailand, to first laying your eyes on 360 degree views of Bangkok to the finale of stepping out onto a glass view point; you know this is something special.

Available for all nights before December. A charming summer house right in the village. A few minutes walk to Saikiew Beach. Three bedrooms, two baths and a spacious living room accommodates 8 people comfortably. Ideal for families or friends sharing.

    The space
We have put a lot of effort into making our accommodation beautiful yet affordable. Our intention is to make a new resort modeled on these first few houses. We also intend to spend more money on maintaining these properties to a very high standard. We can easily achieve this goal by asking the guests to pay for their own utilities. This also reflects favorably on our guests who would naturally conserve our precious resources. Without asking guests to pay this small additional cost we would be unable to sell at our current rates.

    Guest access
The guests have access to everything within the house and front patio area, there are no off limits in the house. There is also a barbecue grill on the patio.

    Other things to note
The guests will be responsible for paying for water and electricity as per usage. Electricity is charged at 5 baht per unit and water at 300 baht per 1000 litres (1 cubic meter). 8 people should expect to pay between three to five hundred baht per day.

Chiang Mai Highlands is one of Thailand’s top 10 championship courses providing high standards of excellence with a lovely Thai smile!

Chiang Mai Highlands is approximately 45 minutes drive East of the city. It’s a lovely drive through fertile farmland with mountain ranges ahead. When you arrive at the course, you immediately feel the quality and class as attentive staff and caddies jump to take your clubs from the car. The Clubhouse is grand but comfortable with impeccable Locker Rooms, an excellent restaurant and lovely terrace for 19th hole refreshments. Opened to high acclaim in 2005 the course has matured perfectly and is in superb condition. It’s a Lee Schmidt design with 27 holes and has won a swath of awards from both Domestic and International critics.

We joined a 4 ball and our new friends were on a special tariff that started at 14:00. A nice touch was that the starter then had the flights proceed to different holes in a form of shotgun start.

Black Mountain is for me one of those really memorable courses. It does not matter how well you played but the lingering memories of a superbly designed course in great condition, glorious weather and of course, excellent companions.

Black Mountain is a 27 hole course complex located in scenic foothills, close to Hua Hin (about 2 hours from Bangkok). The original 18 holes opened in 2007 and an additional 9 holes added in 2016.

The 12 km drive out to Hua Hin is a lovely journey in itself. One exits the sprawling suburbs of Hua Hin and enters into virtual scrubland in the foothills. I always as myself the question; What did these intrepid investors/developers think as they explored this rough, un-touched and un-populated terrain? Who could have such a vision to purchase the hundreds of acres and envisage an International golf course, village development, water park and more? My heartfelt admiration goes out to Stig Notlöv for his foresight and imagination! In 2005 with the land acquired, more than 1,000 construction workers descended on this barren landscape to create his dream in record time, opening in 2007.

Black Mountain very soon estalished itself as on of Thailand’s best and most interesting courses and from the moment that you arrive until the moment that you will depart you will be treated so well by the attentive staff. The Pro-Shop is well stocked and green fees and extras handled efficiently. Locker Rooms are bright, clean and offer full facilities. Take time to enjoy the Club House with it’s spectacular views over the course. The kitchen here is excellent and the prices most reasonable.

Whilst in Koh Chang recently I wanted to dig a bit more into the Lonely Beach area, I had found the party back packing scene by chance a few years back. It is not obvious to find from the main road and once discovered its like walking into the movie ‘The Beach’ just in terms of discovering a true backpacking hub located on a beautiful island.

Lonely Beach is no longer reserved just for backpackers

Lonely Beach is described on many online sites a cheap location for restaurants and places to stay. Well, yes and no. For it has started to attract tourists who are not traveling on a budget so you get this wonderful fusion of classic cheap back packing areas with a sprinkling of very nice restaurants and places to stay in among the area.

  18. The many shapes and sizes of Thailand's islands

By David Luekens, Thai Island Times

Picture yourself hand gliding high above coastal Thailand. What would you see? Or, as you sail on the country’s azure-blue and aquamarine waters, what would stand out about the islands that you’d come across?

Every island has an identity of its own. Yet many share similarities as well, from the natural landscapes to the ways that humans have altered them. Read on for a post that’s packed with trivia-worthy facts about the shapes and sizes of some of Thailand’s roughly 824 seawater islands. Indeed, this section of the newsletter is not called Island Nerd for nothing.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984_s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_cc13b3a6-af8d-4e15-b8ab-429333c84115_6000x4000.jpeg.8dbeeb8dfa27b64f5dbc60ae333f41df.jpeg

    From large islands to specks

When it comes to size, every Thai island fits into one of these five categories: large island, mid-size island, small island, islet, and speck. Keep in mind that my usage of these terms falls strictly within the context of Thailand. Ko Samui is not a large island when compared to Bali or Oahu, but among the Thai islands, it’s one of the big ones. With that in mind, here are all eight of the large islands:

    1. Phuket at 543 square km.
    2. Ko Samui at 229 square km.
    3. Ko Chang (Trat) at 213 square km.
    4. Ko Tarutao at 152 square km.
    5. Ko Phangan at 125 square km.
    6. Ko Kood at 105 square km.
    7. Ko Yao Yai at 92 square km.
    8. Ko Lanta Yai at 81 square km.

  19. A zero-sum approach to Covid-19 could have a lasting impact on foreign tourism in Thailand

By David Luekens, Thai Island Times

I've been thinking back on that week in mid March, when everything changed. Over the course of a week, the news of borders being shut down to contain the spread of Covid-19 hit like thunder off the Andaman Sea. It was stressful. On March 14th, only a few days before Thailand began to close itself to the world, I tweeted:

It's about time now for expats to choose whether they'll ride out the pandemic in Thailand or back in their home countries. An agonizing decision for many.

At the time, I was grappling with that very choice. The State Dept. soon instructed American citizens abroad to return immediately or prepare to “shelter in place” indefinitely. After talking with family back in Massachusetts, I opted to stay in Thailand, where I have a long-term visa and work permit.

Back then, many people thought the pandemic would hit Thailand harder than the United States. I had no idea what would happen. But I kept faith in Thailand’s public health system, and hoped for the best.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984_s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_913a33fb-7133-4a5c-a601-39b336b51f4e_6000x4000.jpeg.60fa302ff0b10c44114364437bb31d8e.jpeg

A lone passenger rides Bangkok’s BTS Skytrain during the lockdown on March 30th.

We hunkered down in a small seventh-floor apartment on Bangkok’s far western fringe. From there, I watched as Thailand went from being a high-risk country to a pandemic success story — a transformation that some saw as miraculous. Others still refuse to believe it’s true.

Now, after more than two months without a single known case of local transmission, it’s time to reflect on how the country suppressed Covid-19. Perhaps more importantly, now is also the time to start thinking about how the next chapter of Thailand’s pandemic story might play out. Tourism is at the center of it.

  24. mai.jpg.00f48077e7e297d2e34bfb51d0c28efc.jpg

Furthering my knowledge of Thailand, I have been spending some time in Chiang Mai learning about the area, trying it’s famed coffee, playing golf and generally acquainting myself with the region. During these visits I have stayed in a variety of hotels, all booked through www.Booking.com and below are my comments and observations:-

3Season Aparthotel – Not knowing where to stay in Chiang Mai on my first visit, I chose the very reasonably priced 3Season Aparthotel and was pleased with my choice. Whilst not centrally located it is easy to get anywhere from this location. It is a very recent addition to the Chiang Mai hotel scene and everything in the property does feel new. I opted for a DeLuxe studio which was just a few bath more and well worth the money. This studio was large with a lot of wardrobe space, sofa, large flat-screen TV, desk, refrigerator, microwave and kettle. There was a balcony and an excellent bathroom. Book this hotel

It is located very close to the Airport but, even with the windows open you are not disturbed by aircraft noise. It’s a good walk into the old town and there are many ’student’ style eateries located close by. I was with e rental car but on some occasions used Grab who were reasonable and quick to respond. Service was exceptionally friendly and efficient. Highly recommended if location is not your highest priority. Paid THB.1,035 per night.

My second hotel was the charming Oriental Siam Resort and you will find a detailed report on this highly recommended property at https://meanderingtales.com/good-fortune-brings-me-to-the-oriental-siam-resort-chiang-mai/

On my next visit I wanted to be in the centre and within walking distance of the famous Night Market. My choice based on location, price, parking and a large swimming pool was the Duangtawan Hotel on Loi Kroh Road. This is a massive hotel with an impressive entrance and a vast array of facilities. The hotel is a little past it’s prime but the infrastructure is generally good and the service excellent. Rooms are old but large with all the facilities that one would expect. Try to avoid rooms with 18,20 as these have connection doors and I could here almost everything that happened in the next room. The bathrooms also produce a lot of noise as the taps all seem to be high pressured!
