This was my first ever visit to Koh Lanta and it certainly took on a very different appearance to other Thai islands I have visited. For starters it was a longer and thinner island and much flatter than, say, Koh Samui or Koh Chang.

It took me around 50 minutes to drive from North to South, yet the East to West was around 20 minutes.

Exploring this region of Koh Lanta on the East coast, and especially the Old Town, really complimented the world class beaches found on the East. Lovely way to spend a couple of hours and a nice place to grab some food and drink too.

  7. Remembering Wally Sanger of Ko Kradan, Hawaii and the open seas

    By David Luekens

Last week I wrote about Ko Mook, the first island that I visited on my very first assignment for Travelfish back in October 2011. It started a three-week swing through nine islands in the Lower Thai Andaman — and that whole trip turned me into an island lover.

My second island on that swing was Ko Kradan. There I met Wally Sanger, the co-owner of Paradise Lost Resort, and I was able to interview him for my first-ever paid piece of writing. Originally published on the old Travelfish blog in early November of that year, I now present it to you largely unchanged save an update at the end.

Ever notice how avid world travelers — and especially sailors — seem to see the world a little differently than most? They don’t lock up their homes and go on vacation; they part with their possessions and set forth on a journey. They don’t see the world as a big, scary, insurmountable planet, but a perfectly accessible playground. They don’t have a plan and an itinerary. Instead, they have a thirst and a vision.

At Paradise Lost on the island of Ko Kradan off Thailand’s southwest coast, I spent a few hours chatting with one such world traveler: 71-year-old Wally Sanger.

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984_s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_8b321218-ad50-44b9-9458-57a40fcb73b7_2978x1927.jpeg.143623dadf102a76f1347bde4868236d.jpeg

Wally in his element at Paradise Lost.

Originally from Hawaii, Wally grew up sailing from island to island while encountering diverse people, so he felt at home when he first came to Southeast Asia in the 1960s. In 1980, at the age of 40, he set out to sail the world for good. More than 30 years later, he’s yet to return to Hawaii or anywhere else in his native country.

“I’ve been to just about every state, country, territory and island in the Pacific,” he recalls.

  8. Coastal Thailand news for August 25th, 2020

    David Luekens

Greetings from coastal Thailand, where we’ve gone a whole week without a serious shipwreck and some tourists from abroad *might* be allowed to visit a couple of Thai islands before the year is done. Those stories join your weekly dose of sea turtles, whale sharks and king cobras in this edition of the Island Wrap.

Last week I published an updated version of my first ever paid piece of writing, based on a 2011 interview with Wally Sanger of Paradise Lost on Ko Kradan. Thanks to those who got in touch to share their memories of Wally. I miss him too.

For this Friday I’m working on a story about Ko Wiang, the largest in a group of karst islands in a remote corner of Chumphon. The group also includes an islet with something (or someone) that makes it unique among Thai islands.

Over on Couchfish, Stuart chose some memorable moments from 100 days of virtual travel before outing a few travelers who behave badly (some wacky <deleted> in that one). True to Travelfish form, he also shared “the benefits of slowing down.”

    https___bucketeer-e05bbc84-baa3-437e-9518-adb32be77984_s3.amazonaws.com_public_images_43d8efa0-49a8-47b1-93fb-ed0b5405392d_6000x4000.jpeg.81aebb7503fc03bccef3f6f89080c8f2.jpeg

Hat Bang Berd (or Boet) / Tham Thong is only a few km away from the Ko Wiang group of islands.

Welcome to Koh Lanta and Lanta Diver!

    unnamed.png

Lanta Diver is an Eco friendly, family run 5* PADI Career Development Center (CDC) located on the beautiful island Koh Lanta.

Lanta Diver has been operating since 1999 and we were one of the first dive centers to open on Koh Lanta!  We offer Dive trips, snorkel trips, full range of PADI Courses (from beginner to Pro) and private charter. We are passionate about diving and customer service and we really love our jobs!

Koh Lanta is situated in the Andaman Sea off the west coast of Thailand, between the Phi Phi Islands and the mainland. Koh Lanta is 30km from top to bottom, with a sandy fringe all along the west coast, a jungly spine down its middle and dramatic rockery to the east. The sunsets on the island are breathtaking and the beaches are amazing, all with different character.

Lanta Diver run Dive-and snorkeling trips on daily basis and we will take you to some of most beautiful locations around the Koh Lanta area. The Marine life is abundant with healthy reefs and the occasional sightings of Whale sharks & Manta Rays. Topography above and below the surface offer you the best diving and snorkeling in Thailand.

The dive sites are suitable for both beginners and more advanced divers.  If you are an advanced diver we will take you to world famous Hin Daeng/Hin Muang for some really exceptional diving! To ensure your diving experience is personal, we always dive in small groups so there will never be more than four divers to each Dive master or Instructor.

Furthermore, our primary aim is to match divers in groups of equal experience levels which will ensure your whole diving experience with Lanta Diver is first class. If you choose to go snorkeling we provide a Dive Master as a snorkel guide to make sure you feel safe and get the most out of your day at sea. Most of our Dive trips offers two dives with an optional third dive (same for snorkelers).

We offer Divers and Snorkelers to either go with our big boat or our speedboat. The Speedboat takes you to the sites faster, and with one of the big boats the journey is a little bit more comfortable and calmer. Diving and Snorkeling Koh Lanta is also perfect for families! If only some of you are diving, the rest of the family can snorkel. Do you want to bring smaller kids on the boat we can even arrange a babysitter!

Lanta Diver Thailand provides a complete service for you from when you first speak to us right through to the end of the day when we drop you off at your hotel. Included in all our trips are

    • Pick up and drop off from your hotel (West Coast only)
    • Breakfast, fresh fruit, lunch and soft drinks
    • Full briefings in small groups
    • Equipment
    • Free Nitrox
    • Dedicated Instructors  and Dive Masters to show you round the underwater sights.
    • Comfortable and relaxing boats

During Low season(May 15 - October 14) we will take you to the Bida islands and Phi Phi Marine park. In high season (October 15 - May 14) our dive sites are Koh Haa, Koh Rok, Bida islands and Hin Daeng/Hin Muang.

  15. road.jpg.4300cf9fb368390b62865b6148aa124f.jpg

Taking a Road Trip in Thailand is a great way to see this diverse and ever changing country. Distances are quite large but there are always so many interesting sites to see whether they be Temples, Museums, Waterfalls, Hot Springs and animal/elephant sanctuaries and much, much more.

As Thailand now offers a vast array of domestic flights to all provincial cities you can either choose to fly the longer leg and rent a car at your destination or to start from Bangkok! A majority of the highways and main roads are wide and in excellent condition, the further you go into the countryside however, some rural roads are not at their best and some are not even are not paved. The majority however are excellent to drive and you can enjoy the ever changing scenery. There are several peculiarities to driving in Thailand and we will come to these later!

The standards and quality of Rental Cars in Thailand has increase greatly. When you rent from one of the major companies in Bangkok, you will receive a relatively new car, perfectly clean and ready for the road. Our current preference is Europcar as there have highly competitive rates and their location at the Sofitel on Sukhumvit is most convenient.

I do suggest planning your trip in advance rather than just jumping into a car and then deciding where to go. There are some major distances to cover (Bangkok to Chiang Mai 8-9 hours) and most of the major road radiate from the capital.

Driving in Bangkok is relatively challenging with a lot of traffic especially motorcycles, however head to one of the Expressways/Highways(many are elevated) and you will quickly be away from local traffic. Tolls are to be paid so it is always good to have small change, though change can always be given. Set your GPS, get on the Expressway and within an hour you will be leaving the sprawling suburbs of Bangkok.

Thailand drives on the ‘Left’! For some not a problem but even if you are not used to this a slow and steady start will make you more comfortable. Thai drivers are generally courteous but they do tend to hide behind their tinted screens and the method of staring them in the eye to pull out, generally does not work. Indicate in good time and slowly muscle your way into another lane.

The roads are essential to the rural communities in Thailand and even around BKK every second car is a pick-up truck. Many will be laden with pineapples, durian, watermelons and other fruit and vegetables. In fact there is a sort of challenge in Thailand to spot the most overloaded pick-up truck! Some younger drivers have taken to ‘tuning’ their pick-ups, this generally just results in lots of black exhaust but generally the tuned pick-ups are the most obnoxious and dangerous of your fellow road users. Take care.

Trucks of every shape and size are found on the roads bringing raw materials from the ports and manufacturing centres around Bangkok and the finished products back for sale or export. Whilst the quality of trucks on the main routes has improved greatly you will also find a range of older, fume belching vehicles that are adorned with hundreds of mirrors, multiple rows of Michelin men and exhausts the size of dustbins! All adding to the charm and excitement of driving in Thailand!

The general speed limit is 90 km/hr for cars. You rarely see traffic cops but there are many stationary radar controls and still quite regular police controls. Drive within the limits and drive sensibly and you will normally be saluted through these checks with a smile!

We all know the feeling! Two or three weeks of vacation seems like such a long time, we relax, enjoy ourselves, have fun and re-charge our batteries. Suddenly and all to quickly departure day raises it’s dreaded head and the panic starts for souvenirs for the folks back home. OMG, what should we buy, can we still afford it and where can we find it!!!

Have no fear for a visit to the vast MBK Centre with its warren of little shops and stores will enable you to resolve your souvenir shopping in a few hours! Very easily located next to the BTS (Skytrain) you can either exit at Siam and walk about four minutes or change trains and go one stop to National Stadium and you are at the doors of an Aladdin’s cave.

MBK Center has more than 1000 stalls and shops on it’s 6 floors where you can buy almost everything. As you enter from the SkyTrain the shops are larger generally selling higher quality products, however keep walking towards the rear of the mall and you will find tiny shops packed with everything that you need. Souvenirs are everywhere from cute elephant key rings, Thai silk, refrigerator magnets, soaps, scents, carvings and so much more. All are reasonably priced and haggling for better prices is expected!

I am a big fan of Hua Hin. It seems to edge every other region by getting everything just about right, the local expats coin the phrase ‘The Goldilocks Effect’- not too much and not too little of everything. This, to me, is what makes it so appealing.

For starters, the air is clean, the beaches are clean and the water is clean. Perfect for my kids to enjoy themselves on the beaches here. There is a huge coastline to enjoy too.

One of my favourites is Khoa Takiab beach. Perhaps not the quite the traditional yellow sands but still absolutely wonderful. During the day you get the beach pretty much to yourself, yet in the evening the beach welcomes both local Thais and expats as they enjoy the beach without the strength of the day time sun beating down on them.
