You can't have your name in a blue TB.

As requirements vary from one office to another it's best to visit your local amphur (or khet if in Bangkok) to get a list of what they need.

We needed originals and copies of my passport, wife's TB and ID card, residency cert from immigration, marriage certificate and translation, document Kor Rohr 22 (Kor Rohr 2 if married in Thailand) and a couple of witnesses / referees, one of whom had to be our pooyai bahn and the other a teacher.

Once you have a yellow TB it is simple to obtain a pink ID card at the same office.

It was basically the same requirements in Doi Saket.  I decided it wasn't worth the effort.  Same for Pink ID.  The only thing I see coming up where I would use it is a drivers license renewal every 5 years and I can use a residency certificate.  Vehicles are in my name now and if I buy new it will be in wife's name or use a residency certificate. Friends who do have a yellow book have said they never used it.  Other's experience may differ.  Obtaining a Usufruct and having my name placed on the house papers, Chanote, for the home we purchased was easy and more important.

This is in addition to checking that before flying passengers must have obtained a ‘Fit to Fly’ health certificate certifying that passengers pose no risk of being infected by COVID 19 virus and this to be issued no more than 72 hours prior to date of travel.

I don't see anyone mentioning the 'Fit to Fly' certificate.  Last I heard this was not available in most countries.  Updates welcome.

  5. I didn't think is was too bad.  Put some biases aside and remember it is a Spike Lee movie and what is to be expected.  I enjoyed finding spots that I recognized. Some outcomes were predictable, especially when the (spoiler) explosive ordinance disposal team was inserted.  How long did it take them to shoot the Pun Pun scenes?

  6. I just received two packages from the UK.  One was a large (11x9 inch) and fairly heavy hardcover book.  It was shipped Royal Mail, Air Mail, and it took 23 days to arrive.  The second, a standard sized paperback book, was sent Royal Mail International Priority and arrived in 10 days.  Interesting they were delivered at the same time.

  7. OK, Just received email from U.S. State Department.   All Americans should register online with the consulate and you will get regular updates sent to you..................

    Frequently Asked Questions

    Q. When will the American Citizen Services (ACS) unit reopen for non-emergency passport, Consular Report of Birth Abroad, and notarial services?

    A. The ACS units in Bangkok and Chiang Mai have suspended routine services until further notice. We are available to assist with emergency requests. The Embassy and Consulate General are adhering to guidance from the Department of State and the Royal Thai Government regarding the resumption of operations. When routine services are re-established, there will be limitations on the number of appointments available as we try to ensure our customers practice social distancing in our waiting rooms..........

I believe this is the link to register for travel and living abroad updates:

I have 2 renewed  credit cards at my home in the states! I want to have my family send them to me(the institutions would only send to a  US mailing address on file).

I could be wrong,as it stands I believe that Thailand is only excepting mail  from international surface transport.

Any suggestions ! Should I wait for the lock down to lift and wait for normal air transportation for mail or use  this surface transportation with  skepticism !

Personally, I would wait.  Credit cards are too valuable to chance getting routed to who knows where.  That said; I have U.S. VISA cards but I have my Thailand address on the accounts and they are sent directly here (in normal times).  If you wish to use your cards online, which is the only time I use them, you really don't need the card in your possession.  Just get the updated information on the card from your family.

  9. Chainsaw licensing changed a few times over the years I have been here.  I bought one in 2016.  They had to be no more than 11" and limited in horsepower.  I forget now the limit, but the store immediately took out the exhaust restrictor which put it back to where it was meant to be by the manufacturer.  I used it many times and now my gardener borrows it and takes care for me.  They are now sold in the major shops here in Chiang Mai such as Global House and Homepro, so they are legal. Mine came with a certificate of compliance.  I am 70 years old and still use it sparingly, but you need to respect it and be careful.  Chainsaw Compliance.pdf

    Thailand

Thailand Post advises that the government-imposed state of emergency through April 30 may have a severe impact on service quality for international inbound and outbound services, and service delivery standards can no longer be guaranteed. The post is treating this situation as a case of force majeure. Moreover, owing to suspension of flights from and to Thailand, and the resulting lack of transport capacity, Thailand Post is currently unable to send mail  to a growing number of countries. Visit www.thailandpost.co.th/un/article_detail/article/11/17151 for up-to-date information on these countries. Processing of inbound mail items is proceeding, however customers should expect delays for all types of inbound mail. Signature on delivery for international services that would ordinarily require the recipient’s signature is still provided wherever possible. In cases where the recipient refuses to sign, the delivery office will sign on the recipient’s behalf."

  11. I received 9 books through Thai Post during the month of March.  Each ordered separately, primarily from the UK and Australia.  I just emailed a store and received a response yesterday from the UK which said "No problem shipping to Thailand".  Also, the wife has received her Lazada orders from China.  Just our experience, yours may differ.  ????

EDIT; I thought this may be true, but I just searched to confirm.  Cargo flights are being allowed into Thailand.

    "
The ban does not apply to state or military aircraft, emergency landing, technical landing without disembarkation, humanitarian, medical or relief flights, cargo flights and any flights arriving in Thailand to repatriate nationals back to their home countries."

You should clarify what you mean by 'immigrants' because there are tiers of 'immigrants' such as illegal aliens, legal immigrants, and citizens.

The rules are meant for Americans who contribute legally to the economy and the country. If you married a foreigner and filed as such you have been getting a tax discount without paying anything into the system.

I have lived in Thailand for 19 years. For those years I paid the same U.S. Income Tax as anyone living in the U.S. and without any of the deductions that most Americans could claim for one reason or another. I receive no direct benefits from this U.S. Tax. I do receive Social Security which is money I paid in, and I pay taxes on that also. I pay into Medicare which I cannot use outside the U.S.    I pay tax on any withdrawals from investments, and tax on my pension.  Fairly recently I qualified, as discussed already, to file as Married.  I am still paying every penny of tax that I would pay if living in the U.S.   So how can you say "you have been getting a tax discount without paying anything into the system."?

It certainly explains it if you make enough money for the ITIN to shave your tax, not much sense for those of us who get no tax break for getting a spouse an ITIN just because they thought it might be useful and who have no taxable income. Nor is there any applicable inheritance tax unless it amounts to many times more money than most of us have ever dreamed of. For blokes like you, it still seems outright unfair and racist. You are being punished for having a non citizen wife, but why? What the hell.

Thanks for your thoughts.  I am by no means what would be considered wealthy. I am not referring to inheritance tax.  For a simple IRA or Mutual fund, a percentage will be deducted and paid to the IRS before your beneficiary can receive the funds. She will probably be able to have that tax refunded, but it won't happen without an ITIN. If she is a beneficiary on U.S. bank account, they will require a ITIN also.  I suggest, if your other half is to be a beneficiary of any funds from the U.S. (doesn't have to be married) get an ITIN before your death.  There are hoops to go through, and I wouldn't want my wife having to hire a lawyer and do it on her own.

As for being unfair or racist, I don't agree. The stimulus checks are intended to help the U.S. economy and get people (in country) back on their feet who need it.  I don't live there anymore.  That was my choice.  If we lived in the U.S. I wouldn't expect Thailand to be sending her checks.  Overall, the U.S. is quite accommodating for expats compared to many other countries. I wish all the best to those in the U.S. going through hard times as I do for those in Thailand.

Did several comments disappear? Is it just me, or does it not compute that a Thai wife who has never been to the USA is NOT an immigrant? To get a jump on it, I filed a 1040X (amended return) as filing separately without my Thai wife's info. Then I took it to the Post Office and found that Thai Post does NOT ship to the USA anymore. That could be a serious problem in five weeks when we're supposed to mail in our Proof of Life forms or face termination of SS payments. So, it's looking like those of us with Thai wives may not get our $1200 payment, even if they're in no way immigrants.

I wouldn't worry about the Proof of Life. You receive a number of warning notices, and quite a few months to submit it. I once made an error  on my first, my second they said was never received, and the third went through.  I am sure the mail situation will be sorted before you have to worry.
