Hi all,

I've been thinking of what we could do to push the upper-intermediate/advanced Thai students a bit more. We get lots of single-word and single-sentence queries and I wonder if anyone would like to undertake something a bit more substantial?

The vague idea I have in mind is to take a modern Thai short story (say 2-20 pages), split it into paragraphs or sections of another sort, allocate each section to an interested person to translate, help each other out with sticking points, then put the translated sections together to create a joint work.

As I type this, I have all sorts of hesistant thoughts - how could it work? would it need one thread or many? would it be impossible to finish anything with too many cooks and no chef? how would we know when we were finished? would people get discouraged with re- edits and criticisms? what about stylistic continuity? would there be enough interested people? are there copyright problems with posting a whole short story here?

So this post is not the challenge itself, but an invitation for ideas. Is anyone interested? Has anyone seen a good approach to this kind of joint project in use anywhere else? Will look forward to hearing your ideas.

What a great idea!!!

Would it be best to recruit say ten people to do the translations into english but open them all up for comment by the forum in general.

I would suggest that it will also be important for all translators to be using the same reference library otherwise there will be incessant argument as to which version is correct.

So long as we stay away from Politics, The Royal House and Religion (also taboo after-dinner subjects for my household) then I think it will be fine and would not upset anyone's sensitivities

I suggest taking a trip to the Thai Buddhist Temple at Wimbledon (Can't recall its name at the minute but all the taxi drivers know it) if they don't do it themselves I'm pretty sure they will put you on to a native speaker resident in the Smoke.

Is กรวดทราย a good term to use for "sharp sand" ?

The term we use in the Construction industry is Sai Yarb ทรายหยาบ for "sharp sand" กรวด we use for small roundish stones (gravel) sometimes used in a washed gravel effect for footpaths and the like.

Hi, yu might try at Bang Po. plenty of small shops selling all the moldings you could dream of. If not there's another street called Maen See just off from the bridge going onto Rattanakosin Island at the (city end of Ratchadamnoern Avenue) iwth a smaller selection but just as good. Most molidngs here are done in teak which may be difficult to paint but look good lacquered or varnished.

Hi, I'll second that. I have owned many big bikes in Thailand and have always used/bought from Red Baron. Excuse the correction though...it is on Sukhaphiban 3 Road about 3-4 Km outbound from Lam Salee Junction on the right. Speak to Khun Somporn, little guy with a great knowledge of everything on 2 wheels. Their after sales is good too and they give a guarantee on the bikes they sell.

may need to move to Patts/Jomtien in the not too distant future.

What's the story there in Serviced Apartments. Which are the good ones?, which are the rip-offs? etc etc. What's about the current going rate for a one bedroom serviced apartment? I don't want a studio with the bed in the kitchen thanks.

Would also prefer somewhere not too moisy (moisy??? make that noisy) no need to be near the beach either. Anything within say ten kliks would be great

Budget rent a car also has maps, this one is in pdf but you can get them in a book.

For me the best one by far is the "Map Magic" CD map of the whole of Thailand. It has a great zoom function that gets you in to 1:20000 even shows the dirt trails. I comes with a paper fold-out map too that's pretty useless. the CD version though is fantastic in either Thai or English. You can get it at DK books just down from the CLock Tower. They are often out of stock though and you may need to order.

There was a thread about this before, I think I might have started it.

More recently I asked my Thai teacher about it and she explained that basically โกรธ was a little stronger and kept inside whilst โมโห was more clearly visible.

I've always considered that โกรธ was nearer to 'annoyed' whilst โมโห was angry. The display explained by withnail seems to agree with this methinks.

I have been taught that it did not in fact enter the language until the 1940's. Is this correct?

In a similar vein. Why, oh why does transliterated thai continue to use the syllable which is, in fact, silent. (Just for Khun Somsakdee who is, in truth, Khun Somsak)

Not sure of the taxi fare but the distance is around 100 Km. I guess that THB 1,000 should do it. Plenty of air-conditioned buses leave the central bus station and the journy is comfortable on good hi-ways taking maximum 1 hr 30 mins ways. Fare depends on Type of bus taken but would not exceed THB 150. Phayao is due south on Route 1

Assuming the money was transferred to a third party account, the bank would have a record of who that recipient was. Even if your wife pressed the confirmation button a hundred times, it was still a swindle/extortion and you should have legal rights, both within the Thai banking industry and the law. You need to take matters into your hands and be very proactive (and quick) about this. I believe there's a possibility for a resolution to this. (If not getting your money back, at least to catch the culprit).

• Did your wife get the printed ATM receipt? That would be half the battle, methinks. If not, the bank should still have a record of who the recipient was.
  

• At the least, YOU could go to your bank, and follow up on it first thing Monday morning. Take your ATM receipt with you. If not, provide them with the details of your account, time of transaction, location of ATM, amount, etc.
  

• From there, you should press the bank to follow up with the authorities immediately. My guess is that a bank pressing the authorities would get more results than an individual making the complaint.
  

• Furthermore, see if they will also give you the recipient's bank, account #, and name (if not shown on your ATM receipt).
  

• I would then follow up with the recipient's bank as well. If it's a different city/district, press that bank to go to the authorities immediately as well. Ask them what additional recourse you have with them, if one of their customers swindles money out of you, using their banking services. Some banks may attempt to settle with you and then find recourse with their insurance, rather than allow this to become a public relations nightmare by it going public.
  

• If all else seems to fail, and the banks don't seem too concerned, tell your bank and/or the recipient's bank that you will take this story to the media. If this doesn't move them, then go to the Bangkok Post or Nation, and ask to speak to a reporter on the crime beat. Take with you all the details you have, ESPECIALLY the names of the banks involved. The Nation also has a Thai language newspaper so you may get more coverage. If it boils down to this last step, act quickly, because the media doesn't like old news.
  

Transferring to a third account is the only way I can think of for your wife to have lost money to someone else through an ATM (unless, of course the recipient was standing behind her with knife to her throat). If she made an ATM "payment" the details captured (name, bank, account number) should be essentially the same.

If money wasn't somehow transferred to another real account, there seems to be a hole in the story here, somehow...

Heres' where we are now.....

yesterday (Saturday) she was still speaking to the idiot when we pulled up in front of the Police Station which was only 5 minutes away in Mae Chan. Constable Plod heard the end of the conversation through the cell phones speaker. Believe it or not I was in the car as this was going on gggrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

An immediate call was placed to the bank in question and as I said earlier they were unable to 'stop' the transfer. Our stay at COnst. Plod's place took 8 yes, eight hours. during which we had all the receipts laid out and were constantly calling the banks. The banks though, were unable to help.

As it stands now. 'Er indoors has been given a PoA from Plod and is flying to BKK to visit the receiving bank at opening time on Monday. We have found out though that the receiving account has no money in it. What this appears to mean is that the money was transferred out before it got cold. It was too large a sum to have been withdrawn so it had to have been a transfer methinks.

Fortunately, in the days of computers (bless their socks) at least a trail must have been left somewhere. All we have to do is try to follow the footprints so to speak.

Your advice about going to the press is one that hadn't occurred to us. It is good advice and I will tell "she who used to be obeyed" to get onto it PDQ
