  1. I don't really understand how they could have convinced her that transferring all of her money into someone elses account is part of the 'winning' process.

    Ben,

That's why its called GULLIBLE!!!! It is normal Thai mentality from my experience when one is called by a recorded message followed by pressing 9 and getting to speak to a human being that tells you you have won some money. His excuse was that you are entering a code to receive the prize funds. When the ATM screen is almost illegible through sunshine being reflected off it and when teh guys is telling you to rush or you'll lose the prize. Well............

If hindsight were forsight we'd all be geniuses

    Cheers

  2. I have always been of the opinon that my nearest and dearest was one of the less gullible of the ladies we call wives, faincees, girlfriends and other endearments. READ ON IT'S IMPORTANT

The other half) has been receiving phone calls (unbeknownst to me) to ask her to enter her cell-phone number into a draw and win cash prizes and or a car even. Chancing her luck she has happily provided details of her phone number to be entered into the draw.

Today, this is Saturday by the way, she received a phone call to say she had won second prize in the cash sum of THB 80,000. "How quickly can you get to an ATM machine?" they asked. Well....in latter years the old eyes are not what they were and the sun was shining on the ATM screen and being of such good faith she asks the guy what she had to do. push this, enter that, push the first button again and again and again and again and again and again (is that eight times...it should be!!!)

She has (i'll be kind here) been duped out of a large sum of money. What's the "she" BS it's "we"!!!

PLEASE, PLEASE BEWARE OF PHONE CALLS COMING IN SHOWING A "PRIVATE" NUMBER CALLING. IT IS A SCAM, THE BANKS CAN'T HELP COZ YOU PRESSED THE CONFIRMATION OK BUTTON AGAIN, AGAIN AGAIN (ENOUGH ALREADY). THEY CANT STOP IT COZ IT WAS AN ATM TRANSACTION ON A NON-WORKING DAY. THE POLICE CANT DO ANYTHING COZ THEY NEVER DO. NO, THAT'S A BIT UNKIND, THEY HAVE BEEN AS HELPFUL AS THEY CAN BE WHEN TALKING TO THE IDIOT THAT FELL FOR THE SCAM WHILST TRYING HARD NOT TO SNIGGER. AIS, THE PHONE SERVICE PROVIDER ARE (bit late to tell us now) AWARE THAT THE PROBLEM EXISTS BUT COZ THE BANDITS ARE USING TTT P.C.S. TELEPHONES THEY ARE ABLE TO HIDE THEIR NUMBER. AIS ARE UNABLE TO DO ANYTHING.

JUST BE CAREFUL IS MY EXPENSIVE ADVICE

    Ajarn P :o

p.s. feel free to pass this on to your friends if you like

  3. Today the daytime temperature is definitely the coldest I have ever experienced here in Chiangrai.....the high was 14 deg C....maybe it got up to 15 when I wasn't looking but I doubt it and certainly no higher. Its been overcast all day with a cold north wind blowing. If it clears up tonight (I'm thinking it probably won't) it will get really cold since there was no sun today to warm up the earth or water.....so button up your overcoat and take good care of yourself......got to love that global warming!!

    Chownah

Chow, I'm 20kms from you in an upward direction and it's bitter. Took the dog out this afternoon and the villagers were dressed up like Eskimos.

    Hi Sceadugenga/Chownah

here it is again!!! I'm ****** frozen. Where is all this global warming they kepe telling us about!!!!

    Yours chillily :o

  4. Hi all,

I am going to start on a new endevour in making a ham.

I do however need a few ingredients before doing so.

The one which I believe is the hardest is the "cure" for curing the pork first.

I also have a smoker for smoking meats on a low heat (just a BBQ with a very deep base) . It can also just be used a slow cooker without smoking.

Does anyone know where "cure" can be found in Chiang Rai?

Does anyone know where wood chips can be found in Chiang Rai?

Any help would be greatly appreciated or any advice from anyone who has done it before would be great.

    ITR :D

    Hi ITR

I just finished one and it was great.........didn;t manage to smoke it but roasted it in the oven with a little "liquid smoke" (ex Villa in BKK) having been put into the brine mix during the cure.

Like you, I tried and tried in CR with no success other than normal non-iodized salt. In the end I went and found the stuff in BKK but that was easy as I'm going quite often these days.

Will try to get you some if you like..Drop me a PM or an e-mail and I;ll see what can be done

    Cheers, AjarnP :o

  5. Oh, it seems that there are alot of gangs in Chiang Rai. In that case I'll start my own and compete for some serious REP! It's going to be called "Goski's Motosay Bonanza" and there will be a 110 CC limit and you have to weigh more than 220 pounds (motorbike excluded).

    :o:D

I think this is a sterling idea. I fit the poundage aswell. I will just have to sell my 125cc and buy a new 100cc. I have a tough guy helmut aswell.

    :D

OK all the 'bikers' avec mota-sickle at C1 n the Thoeng Road 3KM (?) east (sorry John) from Mae Korn Junction on the Thoeng Road, Monday 15th 14:00 (two-o-clock in old money)

I'll be there if you will

  6. Does anyone know of any motorbike clubs in chiang rai, touring or off road.

Yes, the 'Black Rabbits' is one of them. But you have to be invited to wear their colors.

As far as I know only one foreigner had this honor bestowed upon him.

Furthermore there is a club which seems to be affiliated with the 'Rotors' of Chiang Mai.

It's more an easy going club. One of the members is working behind the counters of the Postoffice in town. If you see his bike parked behind the Postoffice (a Virago or a Steed), you could ask at the counter who he is. You might be actually be talking to him in person.

I didn't hear for a long time about the foreigners dominated bikers club the 'Chiang Rai Rangers'. Maybe the owner of CR49 in the Yedyod Road knows more about this. Ask him to bring you in contact with Dutch Ruud.

    Good luck!

    Limbo :o

The guys name at the Post Office is Ball (pronounced Bon) he sits at desk number 1. He used to be part of Rotor but it is a very clicky club and somehow didn't fit.

I tried a while ago to get the club which I am a member of Phayanak started but there was never much interest.

It would be great to have a club here with regular organised weekend rides and would love to hear from anyone like minded. There really are some great rides along country lanes but I'm not oen for off-roading

Drop me a line if you feel like a beer to chast over what we could do

    Cheers

  7. Happy new year CRG!

That sounds like a really nice plan and with that kind of start it will without a doubt get some attention as well. So it is going to be a general library for the community and not a special focus on students?

Yes, it will be a library for the public and students alike. Although my faith in getting the Thai student population to read remains weak at best. So it will be a public library and yes, AUA is a non-profit org. I would surely have been fired by now if it were for profit. For the students, we plan to make a computer room and self-access center where students can come and do extra studies, tests, listening, etc. on their own time. Regardless of what you decide to do AjarnP, and whatever you decide is great, we will be going forward with the plan and just hope people are interested and hope to get some donations here and there.

    CRG

I stand corrected. Happy New Year

When I get back from BKK I'll come in and CU

    Cheers

    AjarnP :o

  8. Hi all

It's been awhile and am still healing. It will be a long one and in no way enjoyable, but that's life. On this topic, AUA is currently under new ownership, of the land, that is. We will still function as we normally have, however the new owner is planning to do a major revamp of the place sometime, I hope, this year. Along with this new building we are going to include a space for a library for the community. I am very excited about this as it has been something I've been working on for awhile. We already have a donation of over 800 books from a generous member of the community. Included in the donation are a number of novels and reference books about Thailand and SE asia. It's truly an amazing collection that will soon become available to you. We haven't yet worked out membership yet, but should be similar to Chiang Mai AUA library and pretty minimal cost, which we will need for operating and staffing the place.

I am urging anyone interested in donating books to please come by the AUA. We would tremendously appreciate any donations to get a good collection going. We can currently store any books that are donated and would be happy to put a name or plaque of some sort with the name of people who donate large volumes.

I really hope we can get an active community of readers going here in Chiang Rai. It is needed and I hope to provide it for you.

In terms of timelines, be patient. It's a work in progress, but we have a good start and have talked with the CR Chamber of Commerce to help with donations for bookshelves, tables, etc. and there is active interest.

I hope this helps and we can start something great for the CR community!

    CRG :D

Honestly speaking guys. My thoughts were of less of a commercial type arrangement. Say managed by a couple of expats with time on their hands and a will to assist the/our community in general.

I have a lot of time for AUA and all it has done for both farang and thai peoples. I might think twice though I about donating my collection in part or in full to such an operation. I could be persuaded otherwise, but is AUA genuinely a non-profit organisation??? (sorry about the 's' in that AUA but old habits die hard)

Keep it going guys, I'm sure we can collectively iron out the wrinkles and get started

    Happy reading

  9. Hi y'all

I was just reading the thread on bookshops in CR and was just wondering.....

I have no less than three hundred paperbacks all in a 'once read' state. I'm pretty sure that many others amongst us are in the same situation.

It would be great to get some ideas on how we could share (not buy/rent as in pay for) our very own private libraries. Whilst I have no wish to see Orn's Bookshop or Gar Garon go out of business it seems to be such a waste to see these 'perfect' books just sitting around and using up valuable shelf space.

What would we need? space? a database? someone or sometwos or threes with a will to share and share alike the way I see it we could all be happy on the throne each morning for 'free'. One in one out with a deposit or an annual library fee to cover small administrative costs might work, no?

Lets see a few ideas coming and see what can't be put together.

Anyway, I've nearly finished my last book and in the absence of the Bangkok Post in my ceramic reading room; I'm getting desperate.

  10. The TAT map is reasonable but rather 'limited'.

Much better is the B&B road map (Berndtson & Berndtson) of Thailand North (including city maps of Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai and Mae Hong Son). Even dirt roads are on it.

150 Baht in the 'better' bookshops.

A very nice map to frame and to hang on the wall in your study was (still is?) for sale at Duang Kamon. It is based on an old military map. It is however so extremely detailed that it is almost impossible for normal use. But it's a beauty!

    Limbo :o

Not only Chiang Rai but the whole country is covered on this CD map available at DK books near the clock tower MapMagic [Thailand 2005-2006 ET]. It comes with a pretty useless paper map too. The CD is great and allows you to zoom in to a scale of 1:20,000 even showing dirt track roads. try it!!! Even the Search function works well in either English or Thai

Alternatively in the same shop there is a map (sorry its in the car and the wife's out) that I bought in the same shop which is very detailed

Try not to get lost. In Thailand it is said that the map is on your tongue.....just ask....someone will know especially the postman.

    Cheers, AjarnP :D

  11. Hi guys.

I hope everyone is in good health in chiang rai.

Just wondering if anyone knows or can get me the phone number of the post office at Mae lao.

It is the post office near the white temple. If not maybe the phone number of the main post office in chiang rai and we will take it from there. The wife has a bit of busineess to do.

    Thanks everyone for your help.

Wishing everyone up there a merry xmas and a safe and happy new year.

Wish i was there even just for the xmas dinner at the dusit!

  12. with in the rai there.

    macro.

they also have legs of lamp?

    lamp chops?

and a variety of exotic food in there frozen goods section.

think i've seen goat something there as well.

    Hi,

Yes, Legs of lamb in Makro, very good but a bit expensive. I also think I've seen them in Northern Farm's freezer. There is a sheep farm about 4km east of teh Mae Korn jucntion on the right headed for Thoeng. Heven't tried it but it may be worth a shot.

As for the Goat's meat in Makro also very good but beware, the forzen packs don't let you 'see' the bone content so don't be disappointed when after defrosting you have half bone and half meat that looks like one of the extras from the Texas Chain Saw Massacre. Still great eating in a stew though.

    Happy munching

  13. An elderly couple had dinner at another couple's house, and after eating,

the wives left the table and went into the kitchen. The two

gentlemen were talking, and one said, "Last night we went out to a new

restaurant and it was really great. I would recommend it very highly.

The other man said, "What is the name of the restaurant?"

The first man thought and thought and finally said, "What is the name of

that flower you give to someone you love? You know... the one

    that's red and has thorns."

    "Do you mean a rose?"

"Yes, that's the one," replied the man. He then turned towards the kitchen

and yelled, "Rose, what's the name of that restaurant we went

    to last night?

  14. I'm surprised that if you're building in Hua Hin that you want tiles from up here in CR. There are numerous tile manufacturers in and around Ratchaburi where you will find what you want.

You're right they can be quite fragile and may not survive the journey from the north.

    Cheers!

  15. I am looking forward to read Chang35bath's report from his trip Chiang Rai - England. He left CR 28 and were going to leave Suvarnaphumi Oct 29 02.30.

    Hi Marsh,

From what I could tell the whole affair (don't tell the wife) takes place under one roof so moving between Domestic and International shouldn't even get you wet.

Whether or not your bags make it is in the hands of a higher power than even NBIA

    Happy landings

  16. Had the misfortune to pass through our new and mighty International Airport twice over the last two days. A truly wondrous feat of construction I must say.

    Just a few comments though...

Its a bit difficult to find your way around as the signage is conspicuous by its absence.

Gents toilets are WAY too insufficient. Alright if you need to sit but for a stand-up job there's nowhere near enough. The one I did find had an 'orrible pool of the stuff to stand in too. Nice touch I thought, you know, for a new building and all that.

By the way......and this is important. At this time there is only one place open in the domestic departures area where one can find a bottle of water, not Perrier mark you, not even 'mineral' water just Crystal FILTERED drinking water. It sells in this establishment which shall remain nameless (for fera of embarassing the owner) for THB 60 for a 600ml bottle. Ok I concede that it had been chilled to a perfect temperature for your Chateau Neuf Du Pape but as water goes it was warm. I suggested that they might want to sell 95 octane gasoline instead (which sells for a quarter of this price per litre) but that seemed to fall on deaf ears.

Oh yes, nearly forgot. Make sure if you're taking a taxi into town that you make sure he goes via the Motorway and not via Bang Na Trad Road and the old Expressway. Cost for the motorway route comes out at around Baht 200-220 in medium traffic and via Bang Na around 350. I was told that they are not yet charging the "Call-Up" fee of THB 50 as per the old Don Muang system but my driver insisted on it anyway. Beware!!!

Conclusion: It might be good when its finished and when they take on a cleaning crew.

    Happy flying chaps and chapesses:(

  17. Hi, me again!!

I think in hindsight what would have been a better solution to heat exclusion would have been to use two 75 mm skins with (say) a 50 mm cavity as in old fashioned UK specs, rather than the 200 mm single skin that I used.

Make sure ceiling heights are good enough to keep the heat above head height too.

Most difficult element I found out here in the stix was finding a good MEP contractor who understood the necessity of lightning protection, good earthing and the like.

Yes my house in Chiang Rai. I have been building various large project in Thailand for the last twenty years would be happy to provide more detailed hints about where to go and who to speak to. Send me an e-mail and I'll send you my telephone number.

We don't have any AC units as, so far at least, we haven't found it necessary. We also use a solar panel for hot water which is plumbed throughout, two bathrooms, utility room and kitchen. We do quite a bit of cooking in an electric oven and "she who shall be obeyed" is always usiing the washing machine. With all this we decided on a 3 phase elec supply which makes the unit rate slightly higher than single phase. Our normal monthly elec bill is usually 1800 to 2100 baht.

    Cheers

  18. I am interested in setting up a Book Club in Chiang Rai where people who enjoy reading can meet regularly to discuss books. These groups usually agree on a book people will try to read between meetings, and then exchange views about the book over a few beers. (See http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/arts/bookclub/running1.shtml for some ideas of how a club can work.)

This isn't intended to be a very highbrow activity, just an excuse to get together with like-kinded people and broaden your reading interests in a very laid-back way. Read on if you are interested in attending a get-together on 19th Sep in the CR49 Bar on Jed Yot St (close to the old Clock Tower end) at 8pm.

For more details, see a summary I've put on my website at http://www.angelfire.com/space/pmchancock/bookclub.htm

    Blast!!!

Now have to go down to the 'KOK so will miss out on your meeting.

Look forward to hearing how it goes though.

    Cheers

    Paul,

I don't know about a club. WOuldn't we all have to read the same book?

I have literally hundreds of once read novels that I would be delighted to swap around for the same even a few at a time.

Meeting for a few beers though always sounds good.....where and what time on 19th???

  19. Hi,

What local buidlers/designers still fail to take into account is that C Rai actually falls (pun intended) in an earthquake zone. None to date have done any serious damage they say but it depends on how long you want to stay. It's only a matter of time.

As for cost for properly designed, structurally sound house with european standard MEP works proper septic tansk and the like will cost you around 10-12K per Sq. M. Unfurnished!

If your long haired boss is anything like mine that's where the expense really starts!!!!

    Cheers,

    happy building.

p.s. I built my house with superblock. Very, very easy no waste to speak of greta product but even this can act as a storage heater if your eaves overhang doesn't provide enough shade.

  20. Hi Y'all,

I'm looking for a videographer in or near C. Rai to film, edit and copy to DVD a tour planned by a group from Bangkok. Will need to follow group for three days in November for filming and then produce DVD after editing by Xmas. Anyone know anyone?

    Be grateful for any advice

  23. What's the situation as far as internet speed, reliability, and cost in and around CR?

    CHEERS!

(Note: Mumbojumbo....I've been searching like a crazyman for "gym chiang rai", "gym chiangrai", gym cr".....but I don't see much. I'm guessing there's a reason for that.... :D

The thread i referred to was on page 2 called Sauna/Steam w/ map. :D Search engine only serches topic titles is think. :o

There's a pretty good gym with personal trainers upstairs in the Spa behind Wat Sri Gert. Give them a try.
